We came in on a Thursday evening and highly impressed to have a restaurant of this caliber here in Jacksonville. My husband and I are well traveled. And just recently returned from Tulum, Mexico. We felt that energy walking into Cataluna. From the front of the house we were greeted kindly by the host. Our waitress Briana was kind, knowledgeable, and made great recommendations. For a night out, Cataluna is such a fun spot. While yes - the pricing is a bit up there. You are paying for ambiance and an experience. Food wise, I did really enjoy the Wagyu sliders. I wish it had just a little more meat or fillings but nonetheless the flavor was delicious! And you can't go wrong with truffle fries. I think the star of the show was the drinks. The Mediterranean sunset was my favorite, it wasn't overly sweet and it was so refreshing. The interior decor on the inside is no doubt stunning. The service was also so lovely. We went with another couple and we had two * Salmon tartars - pretty good but presentation was off. *Lamb chops were breaded and lacked a lot of flavor. *Flatbread was pretty good as well but you cant really mess up flatbread. * Grilled veggies nothing to write home about and the fries were the same. In my 57 years, I have never had a worse dining experience than I had last evening at Cataluna in Jacksonville. When reading a story about this venue in What Now Jacksonville, the owner, Mr. Pepaj told the Florida Times Union, "When you go to a restaurant, you should feel like it's home with people who are giving you high-end service. People who really care about you...and are looking out for you. It's about keeping everything old school when it comes to customer service but with a new energy and atmosphere". Our experience last evening was anything but that - the restaurant failed miserably and unapologetically on numerous fronts. We were a party of 12. When we made the reservation, we were told that the restaurant could accommodate a party of 12. One would think that meant we would be seated together. Reasonable assumption? I think so. Instead, we were seated at two separate tables, one seating eight and the other seating four separated by a planter. The table of eight was inaccessible for the server to serve everyone so we were left passing glasses and dishes back and forth throughout the meal. Hearing there was a dress code, I called the restaurant earlier in the week to inquire if my attire would be acceptable. I told the staff member I planned to wear white linen pants, a black button-down shirt, and black sandals. I was told that would be acceptable so that is what I wore. I was also told that shorts were unacceptable. When I arrived with my group of six people, a very tall, somewhat arrogant man at the front door looked at me and told me that I could not get in with "flip flops" on. I told him that I called ahead and described my outfit and was told it was acceptable. He told me that I could go to the mall three miles away and buy shoes or eat elsewhere. I was furious. My group was stunned and attempted to reason with him on my behalf by asking to speak with the manager. He responded, "it does not matter who you speak to; that is the policy. I see this every day and they will not let you in". My friends wanted to leave with me, but we were meeting six other people. I told them to go in and I would just come back to pick them up. My family pleaded with me to go to the mall and buy shoes and come back. Reluctantly, I did and returned where the tall door guard smugly grinned at me and allowed me to enter. Upon entering, what did I see? Men in shorts and ladies in flip flops and sandals! Apparently, the dress code is at the discretion of the arrogant man at the front door. There are different policies for different people enforced by the smug man at the door. Now seated and passing appetizers, plates, and glasses down to the rest of our friends, we asked the waiter if we could have separate checks and identified the groups of us for him. We were seated in our groups, as we do in other restaurants routinely and without issue, to make it easier for staff. We were told that would be no problem. When we asked for the check, we received a single check for over $1,100.00 including a 20% gratuity of course. The waiter who told us separate checks would be no problem sent a young lady to deliver it to us. When we questioned her and asked her if they could fix it, she nervously smiled and said she would ask. We sat there for another 15 minutes, and no one came. The waiter who told us this could be done seemingly went into hiding. So, there we were, 12 people at the table with calculators figuring out what everyone owed. We chose this placed because it looked exciting and was described on their website as being in the Italian and Spanish tradition served tapas style. The prices were high, but we decided to go anyway. First, this is not a tapas restaurant. I have been to several Spanish style restaurants, and I know what tapas style is. This restaurant is not that. Most of the food was bland. I ordered lamb chops. They were breaded and deep fried. They were dry and tasteless. The only good thing I can say positive about the dining experience was the Nebbiolo was exceptional. The ribeye and octopus were the only two things that people found consistently good. The other dishes fell flat. I will end this review the way I began it. In my 57 years, I have been to hundreds of restaurants in the US and around the world. This restaurant ranks solidly at the bottom of that list. Clearly, Mr. Pepaj invested heavily in the beautiful décor. It is beautiful. However, that investment is completely wasted when your policies are inconsistent and enforced at the sole discretion of the person at the door; when the communication between staff and guests as well as with the serving staff themselves is lacking, misleading, flawed and inconsistent; when the food is average at best and when management clearly has no interest in addressing unhappy guests in person and instead hide behind young adult servers. Went here for my birthday celebration, and it was a wonderful night! The ambiance is beautiful, modern, and elegant. Perfect for a date night, girls night or special occasion. I got the mushroom risotto balls and the lobster and shrimp pasta and they were amazing! I tasted my friends' food also (truffle fries, rigatoni, octopus) and it was all delicious! Let me tell you- The service here is amazing. We've been here multiple times for the soft opening and everything- from the Doorman/Bouncer, Luis, to the hosts, waiters, bartenders, and owner, have been top-notch. Over the past week and a half, we've tried almost everything on the menu. The servers describe the food as inspired by Italian, Spanish, and Mediterranean cuisine, so you'll see a lot of that concept get brought together on the menu. The servers recommend to get multiple dishes to share, from tapas to bigger dishes. Our favorites after trying everything are as follows, in no particular order: 1: Tomahawk for our table (we're usually anywhere from 2-4 people) with a Cataluna/Edmund Salad to share, but the truffle house fries are to die for as a side! 2: Ribeye, when I go with just my wife, we usually start with some tapas and share a ribeye and an option from the Sea (fish) category. The temperature is perfect every time on the Steaks. 3: Wagyu Sliders, a perfect starter with premium A5 beef. It's came out very tender and the meat melts in your mouth every time. 4: Hamachi Crudo, our server told us it's very underrated so we gave it a shot, and I'm glad we did. It's a sashimi-style dish made from Hamachi, which is Pacific Yellowtail. We like to start with that before ordering our bigger plates, along with: 5. Tuna Carpaccio. If you enjoy raw fish and olives, this dish is perfect. The tuna tastes very fresh and the capers on the dish are VERY strong. If they were put in dirty martinis, I'd be a very happy man. 6. Arancini Mushrooms. A very solid choice, they are risotto balls with Mushroom inside, with strong notes of truffle. A very worthy starter for Tapas. 7. Stuffed Branzino, the fish is amazing and very similar to sea bass and halibut. It's a whole fish, so I'd recommend cutting it in half, butterflying it, and eating it like that. It tastes like it would at home, and nothings better than fish at home. 8. Wild Salmon, the chef recommends it to be cooked at medium temperature. I've had it done that way, well done, and medium well, but medium is perfect. The chef has done a beautiful job with this salmon and I wish I could recreate it at home. Their Signature Cocktails are all extremely well balanced. I was skeptical about the Amor in Capri because bourbon and pineapple sounds doesn't sound like a great combination, but the mixologists have really done some fantastic work with every single one of the cocktails. If you enjoy bourbon, or don't drink much bourbon and would like to try, the Amor in Capri is such a wonderful drink to explore. The Musa, Burano, and Bendicion Guyana are great for the ladies in my opinion, but the ladies have liked all of our drinks too. I'm more of a spirit-forward kind of drinker, so for people with similar tastes, you have to try the Essence Vintage. The atmosphere is the definition of luxurious. The furniture, the walls, the bar mirrors, I haven't seen anything like this place in Jacksonville at all. Sitting in this restaurant with the ambiance and service feels nothjng like sitting in any other restaurant in the city. They treat you very well here and you can tell the owner put a lot of thought into the place. After talking with him, seeing the vision and the concept of this place is really what brings it together, because you can tell he's passionate about it. I'll be returning many more times, with many more of my friends. The list is endless, everything, especially the desserts (namely the Crema Cataluna, saffron infused crème brûlée, and Baked Alaska) is amazing and if i had the energy after the great food and drinks, the list would go much longer. You will get the best service on weekdays when the servers and bartenders are less busy, as with any other place, and you can tell they're attentive and cater to your needs with spot on recommendations. The food is absolutely orgasmic, i completely fell in love with the place. I'm a pretty picky person and refuse to eat certain things, but this place has opened me up to trying new things. One thing that stood out to me the most was the service. The service was absolutely impeccable! The wait staff was very attentive, kind, and made sure to give me the best experience possible! The bartenders go out of their way to not only give me the best drink possible, but get to know what kind of drinks I like. The servers are also absolutely rockstars! They have terrific skills and customer service, which is a huge factor on me when it comes to liking a place. But the ambiance?! Unlike no other. Soon as you walk in m, the place will take your breath away. As someone that used to go to the place that was before Cataluna, you can notice every detail of the place down to the bathrooms. Where do I start? Walking into the restaurant we had high hopes due to the vibe and decor being on point! The music, our waitress, and ambiance were 10/10, but as soon as we started ordering it went downhill. Some items on the menu were not bad, like the short rib ravioli, but the Sea section was absolutely trash. The "stuffed" Branzino tasted like it was caught last week, had no stuffing, and NO flavor to it. Also, the tuna carpaccio also had no flavor whatsoever and was prepared more like sashimi. We also ordered a 18$ Brie and roasted pepper flat bread for the table and tasted like it came on CARDBOARD with ABSOLUTLEY NO CHEESE, loose peppers, and arugula. We asked to get it comped, but the owner refused due to us all having a bite even though we were a table of 6 all trying it. Again, our waitress was very understanding, but Cataluna has to revamp the food menu. Having an expensive menu with trash food is not a good look.
