The guy who runs this place and cooks in the kitchen is um kind of special. He has no tact and I witnessed him being outright rude and oddly confrontational to customers. The waitstaff is friendly and accommodating and the food is pretty good (except for the chicken fried steak which is a complete dud), but the creepy owner keeps me from going back. read more

On Sunday there was a Cruise event on Main Street in Bozeman so we couldn't get to the restaurant where we had eaten on Saturday morning. We looked on Yelp and this place had good reviews so we thought we would give it a try. There was a fairly long line as the place is small and cozy but after a reasonable amount of time we were in our seats. It is a very laid back place, cute hippie vibe with fun decor and inventive menu. I had the Cowboy breakfast which I enjoyed. The coffee was hot and good but the orange juice was pretty low in quality. The patio looked really cute and we have a very friendly and efficient server. I probably would have given them four stars but boy oh boy, does this place need a good cleaning. There were dead flies on the window sill next to our table and junk all around. What really gave me pause was when the table next to ours sent the pancakes back because there was a dead fly cooked into the cake. Gulp! Glad I had sausage, potatoes and French toast! Lots of energy put into the menu but some elbow grease needs to be applied to cleaning the restaurant. read more

The Cateye Cafe is the cat's meow. The banana bread French toast is delicious. It's not a terribly large portion either, so you won't feel too guilty about having the catnip and whipped cream on top. For $6.75, it's a winner. My boyfriend has one of the scrambles and he liked it, but he was really jealous he didn't order what I did. Our service was fine, although the BF found the list of rules offsetting. If you haven't been to the Cateye before, it is esoteric with it's rules and customs and I can see where someone may get rubbed the wrong way. If you want an OK breakfast, go here! But who in the world wants OK (and bad service) when you can go to many other restaurants in Bozeman and get 4 or 5 star meals? I felt the same... I have come to the Cateye a few times and would agree with many other points folks have made. The food is alright, nothing too special. Yes, they have Banana Bread French toast, but if that is the only truly unique thing on the menu then they need a helping hand here. The food often comes out as a total mess on the plate and the Chicken Fried Steak was questionable- I gota say it looked like they pattied out the canned cat food and fried it up... it's all starting to make sense now. As for the service, this is the worst part. I have NEVER experienced good service at the Cateye and only once, when I was with someone who knew the server, did we receive good service. I'm just going to bullet-point this: * I'm not even sure how to describe this...the egg scramble was hard/solid - and the cheese (which was only on the top) was solid as well, as in not melty (follow?) However, the eggs were really hot - how exactly does this happen? Personally I like my eggs light and fluffy, and the cheese mixed in...maybe it's just me. * They serve their jam in a jar that sits on the table with a spoon in it. Maybe I'm fussy, but...who KNOWS what other people have done? (Used their own spoon, put it in their mouth, used it in the jam jar again?) * They put CARROTS in their vegetable scramble? What? Yuk. I have this sneaking suspicion that the veggies might have been previously frozen as well, they might not have been...but they had no flavor. * Served on a smallish plate (8-10") - I like to at least see the edges of the plate - it makes it awkward to try to eat without pushing it off the sides. (I'm not saying there was a large serving, just that it was a small plate). * Coffee was weak, and no alternative sweeteners on the table. That said, it wasn't awful, but a Denny's is better (truly). I won't be going back, but if you go - get there before 8am (we had no wait) we tried several times prior and found long lines after 9am. read more

This is my favorite breakfast joint in Bozeman! I'm here at least once a week and whether it's a busy weekend morning or a slow Tuesday afternoon the food and the service is always consistently good. I usually get the Catastrophe (getting it with light chz is the ticket) & my Husband gets the breakfast sandwich, The Felix. Both meals are always delicious and made with love. They have pint glass mimosas (manmosa lol) and red beers that are only $5! Fairest prices for breakfast booze in town. I laugh at the reviews on here that complain about the niche atmosphere and the funny list of laminated rules at every table. This place is unique! It's a local treasure owned by LOCAL people. Go to Starbucks if you want a caramel latte and corporate consistency. read more

I have been here a couple times and I like the food, but prefer to go to other breakfast places in the area. I recommend this place for the food only. The service leaves something to be desired. A list of rules for the customer behavior is on each table labeled "The way of the Cateye". I hope they are aware that this will bring more attention to the service they provide. It would have been nice if they would have told us that there were certain things on the menu that were unavailable before we attempted to order, and if they would have checked the cream container to make sure it actually had cream in it before bringing it to the table. Great food, but the overbearing attempts at cleverness in the rules and decor drive me away to other restaurants. read more

This is a breakfast town! Every place had a wait (20-30 minutes), but our wait at the Cateye was really just ten minutes basking in the sun! Our waitress, Hopalong (yes, that was what it read on her nametag), quickly took our order and came around frequently to refill our coffee (as did other servers).My banana bread french toast was delicious and only required a smidgen of syrup. Everyone LOVED their thick sliced bacon but were a little disappointed with their potatoes - I guess the bf and our friends enjoy their potatoes crisper (a bit more grease or fat, please!). Ummmm, yum! This place really impressed me. We came for dinner (this is only an option on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday). The waitress was super friendly, even with my crabby toddler and actually showed him where there are toys at the ends of the tables. Huh? Yes, toys...thank God! When I want to go to breakfast in Bozeman, I am overwhelmed with all the choices. I've been making the rounds of restaurants, and one morning I met a friend at Cateye. It's a cute place in a little, narrow old building (outside patio looked amazing, but all tables were full). Food was good, not the best thing ever though. I got the Wavy Gravy I think it was called. Portion a tad small, and I have a small appetite- so if I finish my whole plate it usually means the plate's too small for the average person (I usually only eat half my meal). Otherwise would be 4-star. Got a mimosa, that was delish. They have so many kinds! Huckleberry is a must. And the service was great. My friend and I were still catching up past closing, but they never made us feel like we wore out our welcome (even when we were the only ones left). And they had nothing but genuine smiles and "no problems" when we apologized and skedaddled. read more

This is the best breakfast I've had in a long time! I ordered the Elmer Sandwich, with a side of Kitty Cake (cat shaped pancake- of course), and it was soooooo yummy! Husband ordered the special - Strawberry Croissant French Toast. He didn't like his as much, and said he kept eyeing our friends Eggs Benedict. The best part about this place is the cat theme (there's cat paraphernalia all over the place), and the drawer full of toys at the table! We just got back from our vacation, but I'm already dreaming of our next trip to MT, so I can go back to the Cateye Cafe. Oh, service was amazing, really friendly and really fast. A great funky little spot to stop off for breakfast or lunch off Main St. in Bozeman. They serve up some hearty portions of your most favorite comfort foods. Think pot pies, meatloaf sandwiches, and chunky delicious soups. Walk up to this cozy joint decorated with all sorts of crazy old cat decor and you will immediately feel at home. I primarily frequent this spot for lunch, but their breakfast is great too- and it's served all day long which is a bonus! The soup specials are always Delicious, I love the spinach salad, and the salmon sandwich is one of my favorites- and the cornbread is fresh baked and not to be missed. Be sure to save room for dessert too- they have at least 6 or 7 pies or cakes baked daily and they are all amazing!! read more

This was the first of many breakfast stops on my road trip across America. I had stopped in Bozeman in search of a "large red ox" and decided to get some breakfast while I was in town. I chose this place because it was sounded good from Yelp reviews. It was really easy to find and pretty cute. We chose to sit outside in the patio which was perfectly shaded from the street. Everything on the menu sounded fantastic and there was a good variety to choose from. I chose "Gravy Love" which was cat-head biscuits with sausage gravy , two eggs and potatoes. It was a good sized portion of food but not too much where I couldn't finish it. The biscuits were good, nice crumb texture. The gravy was fantastic! The sausage had such a good flavor and spice, nice chunks of it were to be found in the gravy. The potatoes were okay. I thought they could have used a little bit more seasoning but ketchup did the job. Overall, it was a good breakfast to start the first day of my road trip. read more

Went here two times while visitin Bozeman. They have an awesome assortment of mimosos. It's a good hair of the dog if need be. So often the cause is the cure!!! I could easily give this place 5 stars, but there wasn't anything that blew my hair back...other than the smoking hot brunette working there. Best breakfast in Bozeman (that is why there is sometimes a wait outside)! However, I love the casual dining atmosphere, and the waitresses have great personality. Best things on the menu (in my opinion): Cream Cheese Stuffed Croissant, comes with bacon or sausage, country potatoes, and is a special on Saturdays/Sundays (so get it why its there!) and Gravy Love (biscuits and gravy, gravy is KILLER, comes with country potatoes, and bacon or sausage. There are also Mimosas! I really love this place and it really fits Bozeman. Patio dining in the warmer months is also a plus. They also do dinner now some nights a week with reservations only. I am a many times returned customer, and will continue to be. I love this place! read more

This fresh and feline-adorned establishment is certainly a fascinating Bozeman icon. The remarkably conspicuous establishment with a massive kitty hanging over N. Tracy is difficult to miss and certainly one that should be given a try. Upon entering, you are greeted by an astoundingly steep and cramped stair (is that ADA compliant?) and an overwhelming number of cat decorations. On most days at most times, you will find yourself waiting in the stairwell for a little while. Now, I've only been to the Cateye for breakfast/brunch and I apologize for the limitation that puts on my review. However, the cafe is best known for that. Their service has always been very friendly. But on busy mornings (every morning, that is), you will find yourself waiting for a little while between ordering and getting your food. This is not the fault of the restaurant's staff who clearly do their best. However, you may find your wait dominated by a bewildered studying of the walls and their varied, though dominantly cat-centric decorations. The food is really quite great. I won't tell you "it's to die for!" Two reasons: first, the phrase is as common on Yelp as "fiscal" is in politics and equally annoying. Second, it honestly is not to die for. The eggs are eggs, the potatoes are potatoes and the toast is heated bread. The banana bread french toast, however, is pretty unique and very tasty - a must have. However, all of this is contingent upon not succumbing to the paranoia of about 150 cats watching you eat your food. This is not a place for those of you with the rare ailurophobia. Altogether, Cateye is a very different experience and one that can certainly be called "distinctly Bozeman." Try it once and either leave with a partial cat allergy or return for more banana bread french toast. read more

This place is packed everytime we drive by in the early to late morning hours. We waited for about 15 minutes and were able to look at the decor, which is just awesome. Very small town feel to it and lets you know you're in the right place for a good breakfast. The owner or manager was running around like a crazy person. I mean that in a good way. She was seating people, refilling coffee, taking food out. All the things you want to see from a top dog in a small restaurant. They have something called the 'Gravy Love' and I was sold at Gravy. The Biscuit was delicious as was the Gravy. When I first saw my plate come out I thought it was tiny and didn't look like much food at all. However, it was the perfect amount. It was delicious and not too filling. The price was right as well! Service was fast and great. They have Trivial Pursuit cards for you to enjoy while you're waiting along with a list of rules for the restaurant (which they either got from The Stockyard Cafe or vice versa) which are always a fun read. I LOVE Cateye Cafe. I went to school at MSU for 3 years and this was a definite weekend breakfast spot. Every time I had family in town, we went here and everyone loved it. It's in an older house which makes for a cute and intimate atmosphere. It's cat-themed too! I love cats, so this was always a favorite place of mine. Quirky, personal, and fabulous food. You must try the banana bread french toast! Food is always served hot, fresh, and in a timely matter. The coffee is always refilled faster than you can drink it, and the wait staff is friendly. Sometimes there is a wait on weekends....so get there early and sign up on the wait-sheet. I always go for the biscuits and gravy at a new brunch place. The gravy here was very thin, not quite watery though, but definitely underwhelming. The stuffed croissant was very good. Asked for the breakfast potatoes to be crispy but sadly they were mushy and undercooked like others have commented. Ultimately for the price (about $35 with a tip for two meals) there are too many other better places in town. Don't think we will ever be back. read more

Went here for breakfast on a winter weekday. The Cateye was good to go, but nothing special. Service was good and the food just fine, but I found the prices above average. Overall, just fine but I'm not sure it's worth the 2+ bucks premium you pay over the Western Cafe. You get kitsch and "rules" -- which were promptly ignored by the artsy woman at the table to my right -- but not much else for the extra money. Still, A-O.K. You get $0.50 off your bill for wearing your own cat-eye glasses, and $0.50 off if you wear a cowboy hat through your meal. Take advantage! read more

After only about a ten minute wait, we were seated at a lovely patio table on this beautiful Sunday morning. The waitresses needed roller skates to zip even faster from indoor to out ... they were really busy! But they did an admirable job serving a full house.
