I moved to Fresno in 1999 and one of the first steak houses I was told I "have to try" was Cattlemen's. Almost 25 years later I finally tried it. I'll never go back. To celebrate my Father in Law's birthday, we went to the restaurant. I was told it being my first time there was a bigger occasion than the birthday itself. Boy were they wrong. The food was cold and the steak was shoe leather (I ordered it medium.) I also ordered a steak topper, sage butter, and halfway through trying to cut my steak I realized it wasn't on the steak. When I mentioned my steak cooked to the wrong temp, the response I got from the server was "well it's a smaller cut (I ordered the sirloin and shrimp) and cooking to medium is very hard to do. Umm, no, no it's not. I've been to plenty of high end steakhouses and theirs are cooked perfectly. I wanted to give the server the benefit of the doubt, but it was just so hard. He did end up taking the steak portion of my dinner off, I think that was fair though I know that most places would have simply removed the entire meal off bill, but had to be reminded that the sage butter should be removed as well. Weird that wasn't an obvious thought on his part (I served for almost 15 years in a couple high end restaurants, so that's why I'm thinking the way I am.) The atmosphere of the place is very old, though I'm told that adds to the prestige of its longevity. My wife and her family apologized so many times that after waiting so long this was the experience I had. I do find it interesting that not one time did my server utter the words "I'm sorry" about my experience. To clarify, there were six of us and only three thoroughly enjoyed their meals. The other 2 also had problem with their steaks, but come from a different generation where they don't complain. And here's where the disconnect is- that meal was $196 before tax. The cost of the three of us who didn't enjoy our meals was almost $90 and I'm not sure when times changed but to pay $90 for three terrible meals at a restaurant that has such a strong standing in the community didn't sit right with me. Now, if I was alone, or even just with my family, I would have asked to speak with a manager, but since there were other people who were giving me a hard time about it I decided to just pay and be done. Sadly this steakhouse has been very good in the past, but now is a solid NO! Server brought out one appetizer with our main courses, the other one was 5-10 minutes later. Who does that? My ribeye was tough and flavorless, not at all what I've experienced in the past. I get better ribeyes at Save-mart, like way better. Also the mains and sides were not seasoned, very bland. Both appetizers were good, too bad we didn't have the opportunity to enjoy them as such. This was my first time at Cattlemens. I have lived in the Central Valley for 8 years and have tried a variety of restaurants. This was a top contender for the best dining experience. Every bite made me excited for the next. We started with the bread and salad with blue cheese dressing. I was blown away with the flavor. Most blue cheese dressings taste like ranch with the crumbles added. This was homemade and fresh. The salad greens were high quality and crisp. Warm sourdough bread with butter was served with the salad. It elevated our first course. For an appetizer, we ordered the bacon wrapped shrimp. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and the chipotle lime butter sauce was a welcomed addition to my palate. The entree was the 8oz. sirloin cooked rare with a loaded baked potato on the side. The flavor of the steak was exceptional. It was one of the most delicious cuts of meat I have ever had. I was happy my favorite beer, Cali Squeeze , was available on tap. It was garnished with orange slices and was a great accompaniment to our meal. To top off our experience, our sever Justin went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. (During Covid) I really liked this place. Drove a little to get here, but it was well worth it. Had to wait a little for our table. There is a person in front of the restaurant taking down guests' names. Stuck with the time they gave us which was good. Endless salad and bread was a plus. We did the 3 lb and the prime rib. The only thing was they overcooked my meat a little. Other than that, wait staff and hostess were both nice. Waitress was very attentive. read more

My husband and I had reservations for 6pm on Saturday night (Dec 14). We were seated pretty quickly on a very busy night. It had been a little over a year since our last visit, which didn't go well, and I was nervous about trying it again. Turns out, I had nothing to worry about. Everything was great! From being seated quickly, to our server and the food. I wish I could remember our servers name, he was very nice and attentive. Anyway, I didn't leave a glowing review last year, but I feel if I'm going to tell them when they do something wrong, it's equally important to tell them when they do something right. This is a great steakhouse to bring the family to, they have delicious baked beans, steaks and lobster tails! The dining area is a nice take on the rustic design, it's like dining in a large cabin. You can watch sports in the bar section that includes tables for dining as well. The staff is great we are always greeted right away, and are sorted and checked on frequently. read more

T-bone steak was good, sirloin was good as well, but I've got to say, the prime rib was the one! So much flavor and comes with au jus. Cattlemens is my go-to when I am craving meat. The portions are huge and always satisfy. The only issue I have is with consistency in how its cooked. Somtimes medium well is still a little red with blood. I usually need salt and pepper nearby as well. It's worth it though. The shrimp scampi is probably my favorite dish. The first time I tried it was due to a mistake but now I order it everytime I go. Service can vary depending on how busy it is. There have been a few times where I've waited nearly thirty minutes or more for food to arrive. Despite this, I keep coming back. Part of the reason is the manager, who is 5-stars awesome. I just had the worse service that I have had at a resturant. We went in and sat at a bar table. A gentelman named Johnny came over to serve us and had an attitude from the beginning. He was no help and out right rude. When we stated that we decided not to order food and just wanted to pay for the soda. He said fine snd went and got the bill. When he came back with the $3.80 bill he was asked for a to go cup. He brings back a child's cup and was still a little defensive. Asked for the manager, Manager came over and immediately took up for his employee. He stated that he was his best employee and what happened ? When I stated the service was horrible. Cattlemens for my belated birthday dinner. My dinner guest and I had the Original Steak Dinner for Two. We had salad without onions and croutons. We also had the artichoke cheese dip. Which is always amazing. Definitely on my top 5 list for favorite dips. Even though it came out after our dinners did. We both had the 14oz rib eye with broccoli. It was cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. And for dessert we had cheesecake and they brought me a scoop of ice cream for my bday. Needless to say.... cheesecake had to go in a togo box. I'm only docking stars for the price.... My salmon dish was about half the size of most places where I buy salmon, and probably 20% more expensive. Most of my friends got the fillet and it was really pricey for the size also ... Made reservations for 6:30 p.m. for a group of 4. We arrived and were seated within 10 minutes. Our server came promptly and took our order. We got our salads and bread in a timely manner. We waited for over an hour for our food, and when our food finally came the potatoes were cold and our steaks were room temperature. I understand they were busy but there is no excuse for our food taking that long without an explanation. I asked to speak with the manager and he said there was no excuse. The sourdough bread and salad was pretty good. The prime rib and sirloin were pretty good. But the Ribeye was chewy and not great. The sourdough bread is consistently fresh and flavorful (pretty much a must for a steak house-got to have fresh bread). The service is friendly. Good food and fresh and taste like farm to table. I drive three hours from Los Angeles to get to this place and it's worth it. We decided to try Cattlesman, it was recommended and we thought let's try something new. Employees were nice took little long and restaurant just opened not busy yet. We received the appetizer along with our meal. I ordered exclusive prime rib with mash and grilled string beans. I asked for medium well and It came medium rare. My husband respectfully pointed it out the waiter m. Instead of saying sorry let me take it back and get a medium well. All he said was trust and believe it may look real pink but it's medium well and preceded to walk away. I'm 56 years ago I do know medium well when I taste it. After just 15 after eating less than half I got sick at restaurant and on way back home. Really disappointed and will never go to eat there again. read more

The last time we went we felt like we weren't really payed attention to and just rushed out of the door. Even my wife's steak wasn't cooked the way she asked and was had to be sent back. Went out on Saturday night arrived at 7:30 pm, sat in the bar. A waitress approached our table which had salad and bread plates set up. The salad bowls were not clean, they had carrots in them. We asked her to replace the tableware with clean and she dumped the carrots on the floor and returned the plates to the table. Next she brought water and our bottle of wine and we didn't hear from her again, even though she worked the bar area. A young man brought our meal to the table some time later. We ordered our rib eye steak medium well and it was bleeding when we got it. We ordered mixed veggies, it was a squash medley and it was cold and onion was not cooked. The dinner was awful and our bill was $140.00. Hideous. The ambiance was less than attentive-it was someone's last night working and the workers were more interested in her than serving.
