Ugh. Worst service we've ever experienced. Server came us to us and said "What do you want?" Did not introduce herself, did not welcome us to the restaurant. There was a set menu which she did not tell us about. It was byob and she did not offer ice, extra glasses or mixers. Just very abrupt and aggressive to us. It was very off putting from the start. I don't have much of a point of reference when it comes to how a crepe should taste considering the number of times I've had them fits on one hand. In all but my most recent experience at Whipped, I had opted for a Nutella crepe. Simple and plain, it highlighted the Nutella more than the crepe itself. Today at Whipped, everything changed when I took the dive into a breakfast crepe filled with scrambled egg whites, spinach, mushrooms, and goat cheese. It was the best risk I've taken this year.... granted its only January 17th. After an Espresso Macchiato and reading the Whipped story on my placemat, I sat for a solid 20-30 minutes after ordering, a bit longer than I'm usually comfortable waiting for a meal of this nature. Considering I didn't know much about the foray of crepe cuisine, I just chalked up the wait to the nailing the art form that would soon hit my palate. We noticed one of the owners was our server, an important touch to a successful restaurant, especially in a saturated food scene like Red Bank. I was satisfied with my dish but they had forgotten the side of fruit which would have helped balance it nicely. I will likely take a jump into something more dessert driven on my next visit. As you can tell, I'm not much of a review guy. That is, unless the experience is amazing or God Awful. This brunch spot in Red Bank is God awful. The 11AM reservation time was meaningless, unless of course 11AM also means whenever. Our waitress was attentive but sadly she was dealing with a kitchen whose on-time performance was worse than NJ Transit. After being seated, our order was finally taken at 11:35. Eggs of some type were ordered by all six. After awhile, the "came-after-us-served-before-us" tables were eating. Hello? Waitress? "Yours is being prepared now", she said at 12:20. Finally the plates came to the table at 12:30 and frankly confetti should have dropped from the ceiling and champagne corks should have popped. The provisions for the long abondoned shipwrecked diners has finally arrived! One of our party gently mentioned to the owner, during the soccer game-long wait, that our wait was insufferable. He replied, "We cook to order". Dude, invest in an instantpot. Now onto the deliverables. It's tough to screw up huevos Rancheros and they were good, not amazing and thank God they serve it in a cast-iron skillet because they stayed hot. That's the only thing that came out of the kitchen other than habanero sauce with any degree of heat. A plate of fried eggs and potatoes were fresh from the refrigerator, as were a couple of healthy fresh omelets. The coffee though was delish. Food looked super pretty and lots of great variety to pick from. There's definitely something for everyone. They had a DJ when we went who was blasting great music that had people dancing and singing. Our waitress was super sweet and knowledgeable. I would recommend the savory dishes over the crepes. Although the filling and presentation was nice on the crepes, the actual crepe part was a bit chewy. The truffle fries are amazing and the avocado toast and salad were delicious. Great food, great service, management has horrible customer service skills. If my food takes over a half hour to serve and another table is cleared and served before my lunch, all I want to hear is: "I'm so sorry, this lunch is on us." Things happen, no big deal. Instead, I was told "it is only 33 minutes by the computer." Like that's acceptable. Followed by how mistaken I must be and an argument about how I was wrong. Then you give me $7.00 off a $25 lunch that I don't get to eat because I have to go back to work? AND you're arguing with me about my experience and how this couldn't possibly happen? Get a grip. After tracking our server down for to go containers then tracking her down for the check, multiple people were charged more for their food than the menu reflected. When we inquired with our server she checked with the manager who said the system has higher prices than the menu and the menu is outdated. IT IS ILLEGAL TO DO THIS. I've always considered this a small coffee and dessert shop, as I believe it took the place of a creperie, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that Ce La Vi is actually a full service, French style restaurant. Perfect for breakfast and lunch, and also serviceable for dinner, my wife and I decided to give it a go for a Saturday breakfast. Due to the COVID-19 situation, dining is still offered outdoors, but Ce La Vi has made outdoor dining as comfortable as possible, blocking several street parking spots with cement barricades and putting up tents and umbrellas to offer shade to customers. Honestly, it's al fresco by necessity, but it is a good setup. Now onto the food: I chose the chicken and waffles with an extra side of corned beef hash. The chicken was lightly breaded and fried, not overly heavy, which is perfect, especially for a breakfast. The waffles were light and buttery, just like you'd want them. Served on a skewer, you received four pieces of chicken and four quarters of a waffle (so yes, one waffle). Staple maple syrup and a very delicious white sausage gravy accompanied. The corned beef hash was one of the best I ever had. I usually expect the cheap, ground version of corned beef, like that which you'd get at a diner. But, this hash had small cubes of tender corned beef brisket mixed in with potatoes and veggies. I could've eaten that alone for my meal. My wife opted for the juevos rancheros with an additional side of waffle hash browns. The eggs were perfectly cooked, and the added heat and heartiness from the chorizo and veggies was spot on. The hash browns were well seasoned with herbs and lightly fried. I'm not embarrassed to say that I ate both my meal and some of my wife's leftovers. Service was just the right amount of attentiveness and tact. I like being checked in on every so often, but not overwhelmingly. The service at Ce La Vi was just so. Overall, a very pleasant surprise. I'd venture to say that Ce La Vi is one of, if not the, best breakfast restaurant in Red Bank. I'm curious to try it for lunch or dinner as well. I'll definitely be back. read more
