Let's start off with the elephant in the room, pricing. While the food is good, it is definitely not quite what you would expect for $26+ per plate. My dish came out barely warm while my partners was piping hot. Portion sizes were decent, but presentation could have been improved. Went to the Cedar Falls Brown bottle. Two of the meals were inedible. Manager never came over. We only mentioned one to the server as the chicken was not cooked enough. The prime rib was obviously rare, but the server never came back to check and we gave her the chicken at that time. It took so long to get a replacement pasta that we just decided to take the raw prime rib home and cook it the next day. When we got there, many hosts/servers?standing around the host stand. Went here for my daughters high school graduation. The service was amazing and the food was great. The prices are a tad higher but the quality is worth it. There is alot of seating and big windows to see out the back, to the wildlife. This is not an everyday restaurant but for a special occasion it is great. I will definitely be going back. read more

Lovely place with a balcony at the back which is good in warm weather. Also inside seemed very homely and cozy. View out back is of a parking lot but you are elevated amongst some trees which helps. Server was super friendly and attentive. I had a really tasty Merlot wine by the glass. And had the salmon with twice baked potatoes. When it arrived I wasn't sure but it tasted much better than it looked. Was really delicious. Highly recommend. Only 4 stars cause it was just slightly overpriced. I do not think there were measures to prevent cross contamination at all. My friend and I both have gluten and dairy allergies. We went to the cf location. We have been wanting to try this placw especially because we saw they had glutn free option. We both ordered lemonicious drinks, had the sauteed mushrooms without cheese and cooked in oil. We had there house salad with italian dressing because we were told it was the only dressing that was gluten free and dairy free. We also both got the chicken parm with sweet potatoes without cheese on both and made sure to note that nothing could be cooked in butter. We both got sick. My friend started not feeling good halfway through the meal. We are both still really new to our food allergies so did not realize the reaction was due to the food. But we both had leftovers. Just tried eating the leftovers both of us are sick again. If you are going to offer gluten free food you need to have a dedicated space. I will not be going back here again. I refuse to feel like this eve again. And if someone states they have a food allergy you need to take more measures to make sure there is no cross-contamination. read more

Have tried it twice, both times for a special occasion-- billed as fine dining, but didn't meet our expectations along those lines either with food or service. The side salad is just lettuce ("iceberg or mixed") with a ton of dressing on it (ask for dressing on the side if you can). Here's a picture of the fettuccine Alfredo. For $18 one might imagine a little presentation? The famous brownie pie was a meh brownie cut in a wedge topped with whipped cream. I was in town this past weekend for a wrestling tournament and decided to eat here on Friday night. Fantastic little place. I ordered the prime rib and sweet potatoes. Everything was wonderful. Prime rib cooked to perfection. Had a side of horseradish. The food of the people I was sitting with looked really good as well and everyone raved about what they all had individually ordered. Party of 5, came for dinner. Nice establishment, people were very nice. However, what we ordered left a lot to be desired. Drink: I ordered a dirty martini. It came out brown because it had too much olive juice. Food: I ordered the chicken parm and another guest ordered the chicken Marsala. Neither looked appealing and frankly, should be taken off the menu until the company learns how to prepare/present it right. In addition, the company is wasting 3 plates vs using one to deliver the entree and side and the current presentation just doesn't make it look appealing to eat. Specifically, the Marsala came out (because of the sugars in the wine) looking completely burned and didn't even have mushrooms?! Another guest ordered pasta that came with chicken. He's vegetarian so asked for no chicken but, accidentally chicken came on his plate. Overall, I don't think I would come back. read more

Best sautéed mushrooms I've ever had, but it went all downhill from there. They gave me the wrong food and said they can box it up and add the other one to my bill. This is a great Italian restaurant a few minutes from downtown. The place was very busy on a week night. We did not have a reservation but were seated right away. Good variety of items on the menu. We decided to go with chicken Parmesan and Parmesan salmon. Both were excellent along with a great wine pairing. Do not miss the red velvet cheesecake!! Service was very attentive. Restaurant General Manager even stopped by to make sure that we were enjoying our visit. I will definitely go back again. I'll take a larger group with me next time. read more

I hadn't been to the Brown Bottle in years. Why? I've just never been that impressed. And this visit was no exception. My husband and I went because we had received dinner as a gift. We went early to beat the Friday night rush. We arrived shortly after 5pm and there wasn't many others there. We were greeted right away and taken through a maze of different rooms, down hallways, up a flight of stairs, through another hallway and room before we were finally seated upstairs by a window. We were the only ones in the room. What I noticed on our long travel through the restaurant to our table is you would expect to be greeted with pleasant aromas of Italian food cooking. But the odor that assaulted my nose was that of musty almost urine scented carpeting. Yuck. Yes the building is older, it has been flooded several times, I'm not sure if this is where the odor comes from. But it was not pleasant. Our server was excellent. Knowledgeable, attentive, polite. Couldn't have asked for better. I wish I remembered his name. Nice younger gentleman. We ordered and our drinks came quickly. It took quite awhile for our meals to arrive. But we were patient. I ordered the prosciutto mushroom pasta. It was excellent! For $18 it should be. My husband ordered fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. He said it was good. The biggest disappointment of the night- the bread served with our meals. Or shall I say an oversized hard crusty crouton. It was hard, dry and flavorless. My pasta didn't have really any sauce to soak up so it did nothing to soften the bread. It was terrible. My husband was extremely disappointed in it too. It pretty much destroyed the entire meal. It took a good hour to dine here. It's not a quick service. I don't get all the hype. I don't like to pay $65 for just me and my husband to have dinner typically either. First time visit . We ordered pizza and dessert to go. Ordering was easy . Food was done when promised. Pick up was smooth. Everything was efficient and correct. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was awesome. The pizza crust, sauce and toppings were in perfect balance. Can't say enough about the desserts. I highly recommend giving them a try. For the prices, I am very disappointed with both the small portions and lack of innovation in the dishes. Nonexistent flavors, greasy and heavy food made without any effort to provide new bold tastes. I was served a broiled fish in a casserole pan finished in a layer of grease, without any sauce, vinaigrette, or flavor behind greasy baked cod. Maybe it's just the dishes we ordered on one night. This place comes across as more of a generic American diner indistinguishable from any other heart-stopping fast casual chain in the region but charges like a nice bistro or fine restaurant. read more

The food was outstanding, just like I remembered it from years ago! Our night and service started out very well, but then our waitress seemed to have gotten a little behind. When we ordered dessert she forgot a couple of them, then brought the bill, then remembered she didn't charge me for the kids cookies and milk. So out she comes with another $3.75 bill. I tell her to take my card and run it again for that, she forgets to take it. She saved herself at the very last minute by telling us she had a table for 21 or 22, so I left her a generous tip for the service we really didn't get. My suggestion to her would be to let us know that right away so we wouldn't be mad when you forget something or don't check in us promptly. We all get it! I was visiting Cedar Falls with a friend and always loved the Brown Bottle as a kid, so it was a must visit when I was in the hometown. Well, it was just as amazing as I remember. First of all, we made a mistake with our reservation. We called to increase reservation to six people, but they moved our party of two to 6pm. When I called to say we were only going to be two again, they said we missed our 6pm reservation. Oops on our part but they were so gracious and got us a table at 7pm and in the booths in the front dining room which I love. From the exceptional creamy salad dressings to our pasta dishes, it was incredibly delicious. This was our "go to" family celebration dinner when we come to town. But maybe no more. We came tonight for my mother in law's birthday at 6:15. We made reservations and dressed up and headed out for a night at Brown Bottle. My in-laws have been dining here since 1972 and this was probably the only time we have not had an amazing experience. We arrived and were seated upstairs in the corner. No one asked to take my long coat. My husband ran around looking for a hook. Once we were seated we noticed the place was really empty. Why did we have to come all the way up here and look at the AC on the roof!? Why didn't they ask about my in-laws and stairs (they are in their 70s)? We had no problem choosing drinks and the waiter was delightful, but when the drinks arrived, they were 1/2 full? Yummy, but... Cody was remarkably nice! He apologized for the drinks but didn't replace them since they were "two shots". Dinner was ordered and for the most part it was delicious...except the pizza. That was oddly doughy and hard to cut. So we sent it back and had them finish cooking it. While the pizza was cooking the servers came through and blew out all the candles and started cleaning up the space. They even did a little vacuuming :). We asked if they were closing. We began thinking we might get the pizza to go. They assured us they were just closing the upstairs. We asked about moving but that couldn't happen because they seated "one table per waitperson". Couldn't our waitperson serve us downstairs? Cody was great! He probably would have loved skipping the stairs. Finally...let's not forget the pizza. It came back burned and nearly inedible. Box it up. Brownie pie and happy birthday. Five stars is a lot for a mistake in our carry out order.... Ordered pizza and a pasta dish. When the wife got home we found the the Shrimp in butter dill sauce was chicken. Called and was pleasently suprised that they said they would deliver the correct meal to us. On top of that they threw in three pieces of cake. The service here was amazing and we were seated right away. I ordered the Rosemary Cashew Pasta with Grilled Chicken which came with a salad. The salad had an amazing creamy garlic salad dressing and was a nice starter before the main course. The main course of Rosemary Cashew Pasta with grilled Chicken was one of the best pasta dishes I have ever had. I have traveled throughout Italy and found this to be the closest to the dishes I had when I traveled there. The dish was served with a decent portion of pasta, sauce, cashews and chicken. I rarely take home leftovers but the size and taste made me take some home to happily have for lunch the next day. I topped off the night with their Red Velvet Cheese Cake which was an amazing dish in itself. Did not feel like a high end restaurant. The food was below average, vegetables were undercooked, entrées over cooked. Multiple people at our table ordered chicken marsala and we could not find mushrooms even though it said it was supposed to be part of the dish not a special request. Was very disappointed as I have been to the Waterloo location and was anticipating a much better experience. Service was decent but nothing exceptional. If I don't enjoy a restaurant I usually don't review it, but was dramatically underwhelmed. Maybe they had an off day, but they did not meet the expectation.
