Our first stop on the way up to Redwood National Park. We came right during the lunch hour. It seems like a favorite local lunch time spot as the staff had a nice stream of phone calls and customers coming in to order sandwiches. Lots of rolls to choose from including sourdough by the slice. I got The Big Turkey, which is your classic BLT with turkey and avocado. My SO got the Dinner Sandwich, which includes roast beef, bacon, smoked Gouda, tomato, lettuce and chipotle aioli. Honestly, can't complain. I will say that while I was there unfortunately one of managers (?) decided to complain and criticize the young girl making our sandwich over the sandwich bar not being stocked and would not drop it for several minutes. Look I get it, running a business and managing employees can be super stressful however it is really unprofessional and quite frankly unkind to berate your staff (in general) but particularly in front of customers while that employee is essentially "locked in" ( as she was making a sandwich) and can't fully engage or defend themselves. These are more square sandwiches as opposed to a SUB sandwich, but they also do have rolls. Bread looks ordered fresh and keep in mind they do run out out of certain breads. I like that they already cut the sandwich in half with a paper wrap and then wrap that in another wrap, keeping it neat and tidy. We are visiting McKinleyville and found this gem. Central Sandwich was just what I was looking for. We pulled up and there was person out front with a mask taking orders. I ordered the Stonehenge and sub-out the pepper jack cheese for the smoked Gouda. I waited in my car and before I knew it, my sandwich was brought to my window. It was delicious !! Had lunch here one day. Ordered their version of an Italian sub. I requested extra mayo. Plus I got a small bag of Jalapeño potato chips and a bottle of water. Sandwich was huge, I could not finish the whole thing. While it was filling, it had to much bread. The bread to fillings ratio was not there for me. They do offer choices for bread - I asked the young lady making my sandwich what she recommended - so I took her recommendation for the French Bread. Next time I will ask if there is a bread option with less bread, or failing that, if they can scoop out some of the bread when making the sandwich. There are a few tables to eat inside - which I did. Was a great stop along a work trip. My Veg Out sandwich was delicious, and the fresh sourdough roll was phenomenal. A large menu board with several house special sandwiches/wraps, as well as a build your own sandwich chart option. You can literally create pretty much any type of sandwich or wrap you could want and its always prepared fresh to order for you. I recently had the Smokestack on sour dough - a generous portion of smoked turkey, with smoked gouda, fresh avocado, a chipotle aoili, with lettuce and tomato and a little s&p. This is a huge sandwich and it is more than enough food to split between two people. There are a variety of bottle craft beers, craft sodas and ciders, etc are in the drink case by the counter and there is also a large assortment of bagged chips, etc. The sandwiches are not the cheapest in town, but they are large enough to split. Did we give up on cleaning? God this place has been going down hill. Very dirty everywhere. Ingredients used are getting worse and worse as well. Wish they used the same quality and care as chuchies in eureka which is owned by the same person. Also why no toaster? Toasted bread is much better and more time efficient then the oven toaster. The sandwich's here are really good.. and I love to support a local business. They have vegan options such as the local tofu shop tofu and vegannaise And the people working are always really nice. My only complaint was the woman making my sandwich wasn't wearing gloves and I saw my avocado get mashed in her fingernails and then spread in my sandwich. It's crazy to me when a business won't invest in a second line option when the phone is consistently busy. Also the girls working are never really friendly and once you can place an order you then have to deal with not so great service. I'll be honest, the menu items are awesome and this place was one of my favorite sandwich shops (when I could afford it). However, the past 2 times I have gone in to place an order, there have been no enforcement of masks for the employees. The first time two out of the four sandwich makers had masks below their nose, one low enough I could see her mouth while she talked. So I called once I walked out asking to speak with a manager. Once I got a manager on the phone, I asked if there were masking guidelines for their employees, and she answered yes. Didn't look like it to me.... The second time I came in, which was just 10 minutes ago, one employee was able to walk in announcing she was on break not wearing a mask at all. Fortunately, the other two employees working were wearing their masks properly, but there was zero reinforcement of the mask safety guidelines. I don't think I can continue to feed my family from here in good conscience. It's a shame, they were my favorite place, even if they were high priced! read more
