My friend and i rarely eat here . We came for chaat today after very long time . Service at the counter was good and we gave tip as well for our to go order of papdi chaat and tikki chaat. But after reaching home i had to discard my papdi chaat . First it was not prepared well like they serve at their restaurant and secondly it had a rotten smell . It had papdi dahi chana and aloo. Thats it . Dont know what was wrong but this is not what was expected. Not much to say. Been coming here for the past 5 years. I live in Daly City now and i still come here when i pick up my son in SJ. The food here is complex, seasoned well and just a party in your mouth. I cant cook indian food well so this is my go to spot. Poor service in response to complaint of a curry! Paneer tikka masala tasted like tomato curry with plain paneer pieces and when I asked them to change it so that we can take something else in place of it, the guys were rude and said "once it gies to table, it cant be changed". Customer is not lying!!! They dint refund and took the curry back! Do not tip these guys before as they tend to not care after you have PAID. Only a spoon was taken and it was bad !! read more

It had been a while since I'd been back to Chaat Cafe. So I went here on a whim for lunch the other week and was really glad I tried the lunch special. Great price and just the right portion of food. The girl at the register was nice and the restaurant is clean and updated inside. I had noticed that there was no lamb on the lunch menu, so I just decided to go with the chicken. With the open kitchen, I could tell at the front counter that the place was essentially family run. Three seemingly immediate family members working in the kitchen, made me feel good about ordering here. They took their time preparing the food which I can justly appreciate. She brought the food out to the table from what I remember, and there was this green non-spicy sauce that they had on the front counter. The green sauce was needed to eat the wrap properly in my opinion. The chicken and wrap was actually delicious, and at less than $6 a really great deal. I believe I will be back here for the lunch special sometime soon; hell I might even come for dinner if I have the chance. read more

The butter chicken gas gone down hill. Not simmered in sauce, they just pour the sauce into red color tangy chicken, which makes it's a tad sour. It's so watered down. Butter chicken is supposed to be a decent thick and creamy consistency and not sour at all but the chicken they use makes it sour. Go back to original recipe, please! It seems like New management keeps taking over and the food flavor consistency keeps getting worse. We miss the original owners/management team. We used to come once every month. Now, maybe once a year if that because we're desperate and hungry at times for last minute nearby Indian food, unfortunately. I just get the lamb now a days, when/if we do go. read more

Not sure why it's rated so low in stars, THIS PLACE IS DELICIOUS! We had the family dinner for 2 for $32 including tax; we ended up with lunch for tomorrow. We had the lamb curry, butter curry, peas and cheese soup of the day, lentil soup, cucumber salad, butter naan, white rice, Samosas, chips with yogurt that I cannot recall the name of it. Food started coming to our table within about 5 minutes. Food was hot. Someone brought our food to our table instead of you having to go up and get it your self which was really nice. I always like to know who is in the kitchen; here was about 3 or 4 Indians genglemen and like 3 other men of another ethnicity. Flavors were REALLY GOOD. Been here multiple times now every time it was great! Clean atmosphere and simple decor, the parking is easy as private lot in a shopping center. Service was good, order at the counter and they bring the meal to you and your designated number. The staff is friendly and helpful, very good at articulating dishes to the noobs and giving helpful tips and suggestions on meal. I have had almost everything on this menu, and every time I go I always order something different and walk away relatively happy and fully satisfied. They have daily specials, and family meal specials which are always a good bang for your buck. They are a private owned chain with other locations, they cook without MSG and use only fresh produce and halal meat. At the counter they provide a fennel mix to snack on, think of like and Indian trail mix. The dishes can either be a la carte, dinners, or you can just get Chaat dishes (street food, appetizer/tapas sized). All the dinners come with Dal (chickpea lentil soup), rice, veggie of the day, cucumber salad, and Naan. You can always ask for Raita (fresh yogurt) for the naan, and there is always an abundant amount of tamarind and mint sauce at the front counter for your meal. All the "Curry" meals are good, i only say curry because most people don't realize curry is not a dish, it is a blend of spices, the dishes are classified as Masala (lightest in spicy), Aachari (medium spiced), and Vindaloo (spiciest and most pungent). The chicken and lamb is good for all these, the catfish and salmon were succulent and my favorites. They do have wraps that are relatively decent and well priced. The real highlights of this place are the appetizer or Chaat dishes, the Tandoori Mixed Grill, and the regular Naan or Stuffed Naan. The best Chaat dishes are the: 1. Chicken or assorted Pakora, its basically Indian tempura with a nice cardamom/cinnamon dusting. 2. Tandoori Spicy wings, they come on a sizzling grill and have a nice spice and texture, full wings w/ lemon juice and fresh onions to match the heat. 3.Papri Chaat, think of a sweet/savory cold style Indian nachos The Tandoori Mixed grill is all the meats they serve coming out on a hot griddle and served a la carte, this is best match with an order of Naan or even better the Bhaturas (Deep fried naan) The top stuffed naan was the Keema Stuffed Naan! it is a spicy lamb stuffed naan that is flaky and crispy outside, then savory and filling inside. It is the bomb when eaten with fresh raita and tamarind sauce! They also have Indian desserts in a case next to the soda fountain, plus mango lassi! Overall this place is a definite must whether you are experienced in this type of cuisine or just starting to dabble. They have a broad range of food to meet all palates and its cheap and easy. Oh and don't forget to try the Bhaturas! its not really found on the menu, you have to ask for your naan to be fried! (No extra cost either!) read more

Horrible I ordered the chicken tandori plate with plain rice w/cucumbers on the side. The chicken taste did not taste like tandori or chicken it was so dry and so salty! Why don't you guys know how to make tandori paste. It looks more like chicken food dyed pieces dipped in salt. Also, I've never seen chicken biryani so saucy with curry?!!**! Get it right! We ordered take out from this cafe through yelp - ordered for bhatura chana and fish wraps and garlic naan. The chana bhatura was really good. Being a punjabi, I had a certain expectation and it totally fit. I think it would have been better had we just eaten out there. The bhaturas tend to get chewy real quick. Anyway this dish was totally worth the drive! The garlic naan.. kind of disappointing. It wasn't as spongy and buttery as you'd expect. The garlic seems burnt and just too much. I usually get it to go but today I ordered in and almost every single customer that came in after me also ordered lamb curry so I guess it's not just me! I've had Chaat Cafe in the past before covid and the food is always delicious. My go to pick is the butter chicken a la carte with extra naan. I always get extra mint chutney and tamarind water to dip with the naan. The staff are always friendly and always get my order right. Recently I went there a month ago and picked up my order. I will tell you I was not happy when we were meeting friends there for dinner. I do not like Indian food. I have tried so may before say that I am for sure not a fan of it at all. I'm not a picky eater so I was just ordering the chicken wrap and thought that would be safe. And it was great. I really enjoyed it. My review is solely for the chaat options here. I had sudden cravings for chaat and then hubby suggested this place based on yelp reviews. Ordered aloo tikki chaat and samosa chaat. We got huge to-go boxes and we thought it's a great quantity for the price. Not so when we opened. It was filled only till 1/4th. Aloo tikki Chaat is amazing, where as samosa chaat gets 3/5. But, I am not really happy with the quantity I got for $7. Will I come back to this place to try other options? Yes. But, i really hope they match the amount of food served with the price. read more

I needed to find a great Indian place and it has been good however, I ordered gobi naan and the first time it was perfect. And the next time I went, I got 3 orders of the gobi naan and it was SO spicy. I couldn't eat it. It looks like the phones don't work either to ask them about it. I would like a discount or to be accommodated for next time if they want me to continue as a customer. I have a large family that would like to keep ordering but I can always find a new place. If I could give negative 4 stars to this place, I would. Desi Wrap: Supposed to be a chicken wrap with a kick to it. They should go to Pakwan restaurant or Shalimar restaurant in Fremont and get some training on cooking tandoori chicken. It was so bland and barely had any flavor and who the hell puts a sauce which tased mayonnaise on a tandoori chicken wrap? Papdi Chaat: Real Papdi chaat should have some onions, cilantro, chat masala to give it a Chaat flavor. Their Papdi chaat was so cold and sweet that it tasted like dessert that they pulled out of a refrigerator. Can't believe they name the restaurant after this dish. They should ask the cooks to head over to Chaat House in Sunnyvale to get some training. Finally Chai: It was basically hot milk/water combination with tea/chai coloring. Can't believe they charge for this beverage. Many other restaurants serve complimentary chai which tastes better than this. I don't mind paying for chai which actually tastes like chai. Had to bring it home and put a tapal danedaar (Indian tea) and warm it up to make it taste better. Take my advise, if you feel like having Indian food.. skip this place, drive a bit and satisfy your taste buds by going to a real Indian place. read more

I also had two orders of the small crispy balls that were filled and they came soggy and ran all over the container. We don't live that far away for it to come in that condition.
