If you have ever wanted to try out a different type of cuisine, then I recommend trying out some Indian food! I introduced Chaat Cafe to a friend of mine last week. Keep in mind that he has never tried Indian food and was a little wary, but in the end -- he loved it. =) The chicken wrap is my favorite, and I think it's probably the best dish to start off with if it's your first time there. Delicious tandoori chicken accompanied by a refreshing medley of cucumbers and tomatoes -- all wrapped in a fresh & soft piece of naan! Ooh naan, how I love thee. If I wanted to, I could probably eat it all day, everyday! All of the wraps come with either a side of cucumber or potato salad. As much as I like the cucumber salad, I would recommend opting for the potato salad because the cucumbers will get the wraps a little soggy. :( We also got the Chicken Tikka Masala plate. When that was served, I was a little in awe because of the amount of food that came with it. It was all yummm. Chaat Cafe is actually a little cheaper than Tandoori Oven! Great food that leaves you feeling satisfied and full, without breaking the bank. They also have a lunch special around 12-3pm, in which a selection of wraps are only $5. There's a rule of thumb when picking out a place to eat. Usually if there are many diners, then that's a good sign that the food is good. Sadly, Chaat Cafe was empty when we got there (and when we left too) ... and it's such a shame because the food is delicious! :( However, there are times when the place is poppin', but don't let the empty tables scare you away. This location has no customer service. They say they close at 9:30 but actually close at 9:00. I called them at 9:10, 9:14, 9:15 & 9:16, 9:17pm but they don't care to answer the phones. Then when you go there they actually say you have to order by 9:00pm. They do not closed at 9:30pm they leave at 9:00pm. Both their menu, their signage on the door, Yelp page, website and more is wrong. They were purposely avoiding my phone calls in order to take a simple togo order of 3 simple items. 2 wraps and one Aloo Tikki. Their excuse was that the oven for the naan was turned off. All they need to do is state the correct closing time of 9:00pm and none of this would've happened. This is not the first time but it is the worst time. Furthermore they refused to take cash and would only take credit cards because apparently they had already closed. So most of the kitchen is closed, most of the registers are closed, most of the lights are off yet the hours still say that they are still open. read more

Ordered tandoori chicken leg. Horrendous. If someone would follow instructions over internet he could make a more tasty tandoori. The marination only had two items color and salt. Don't really understand all the 5 star reviews on this place. This is the worst Indian food over ever had. The tikka masala tasted like tomato sauce, flavorless. The garlic naan was just as bland. This is a nice little joint offering good quality Indian food at reasonable prices. The Chhole Bhuture was amazingly tasty. The dish had two Bhuture's and one medium sized bowl of Chhole which was enough for one person. The Vegetarian Thali had the vegetable of the day, tanduri roti, salad, and dal makhni. It all was delicious. It was not very spicy and was filling. We had too take some home and they had boxes out In the corner. My sister had the Veggie paneer Wrap. It had cucumber salad on the side and was enough for dinner. It had paneer, and multiple vegetables inside. The food came fast and the service was prompt. It also tasted fresh and stayed warm. I love Indian food and it's my first time trying it in SJ. I seen that this place has decent ratings so I decided to give it a try. First off, I can't even explain how everything just tasted so poorly. After the first few bites, the food just tastes gross. The cucumber salad tastes like it's been out for hours and hours and it's dry. The sides for the dinner curry platters are just gross. The tikki masala was pretty watery and not a thick consistency at all. Literally the only good thing was the Garlic Naan. Otherwise, everything is just disgusting. This is a decent place to satisfy your cravings for Indian food! I've tried the saag paneer and the chicken tikka masala with a side of garlic naan, which they charge extra for. The saag paneer was pretty good, but I think it lacked some flavor. The chicken tikka masala was alright as well. I really like how they're served in cute, little dishes. It may not look like a lot, but I couldn't finish it, especially with all the naan on the side. The biggest downside to this place is the fact that I found a small, black hair on one of the naans. Definitely an appetite-killer, but the waiter took it back and gave us a new one (I hope). Overall, I'd come back if I were craving Indian food & were in the area. We both love Indian cuisine, and I had eyeballed this place two nights before when I ate at the Korean BBQ restaurant next door with my family. I loved the decor and the music seemed just right. We came in around 4:30-5pm on a Thursday excited to eat Indian cuisine. We both noticed that there weren't any customers inside, but decided to proceed to the front of the cashier to look at the range of foods they served. I was overwhelmed by the array of foods with the pictures on the menu, so I decided to grab a menu and sit at one of the nice tables. I couldn't decide on the spot, but the visuals of the dishes helped alot. I believe the owner was the one who was helping us with our order and he made a few suggestions. Sylvia just stuck to her favorite dish, the Chicken Tikka Plate & I ordered the Spicy Seekh Kabob Plate and an order of Tikka Masala Tandoori Chicken Tikka. First, the curry of Tandoori Chicken Tikka came out first w/ the plain naan, damnnn it was soooo good. We teared at the naan and dipped it into the curry sauce, it tasted very rich and full of flavor! EVERY THING was soo incredibly delicious! My god, I couldn't have it any other way. The food was sooo good, and we stuffed ourselves :) Plus, at the front, they have two types of sauce to put in our dishes, which were 2 types of chutney. I loved the green mint chutney with the garlic naan. It was quite delicious. The price for our meal came to a little over $28, but it was worth the meal. I loved it, and I even got to bring home some chutneys & leftover garlic naan to my house to snack on later. The bad side: Some customers were very rude and stared at us eating. Im not sure if it was because we had a whole table of food, and they wanted more. Or the fact we had bright pink & green colored hair. Th customer service was really friendly and this one lady was real nice and we got to talk to her, explaining the situation with the other customer who was rudely staring at us while we ate. This is a great weekday takeout spot. Like any restaurant at this price point, there are some hit or miss dishes. The briyani is tad mushy for my taste, but the samosas are perfection. I keep going back because the quality of the dishes I generally get is consistent and the restaurant has never once messed up my order in the 5 or so years I've been coming here. In South San Jose, we are hurting for great restaurants and reliable service feels really good to have. I wouldn't expect a shit ton of authenticity. This is like fast food, people. For a person not from India, this is my opinion from an American point of view. Whether this is south or north India region flavors, this place makes some delicious food. Authentic to me as it smells and tastes of what my impression of what food from India would taste & smell like, wonderful. The flavor profiles in everything I tried were unique. Not one thing tasted the same, i say this in a good way. Mind you, we did not try everything on the menu but we tried quite a bit in our return visits to this place. Love the food here and will be back often as our go to India spot in South San Jose. I stopped by to grab a to-go during work lunch, and wouldn't mind stopping in to sit down and eat next time I have more time.
