We went to this restaurant. We drove 20 miles to get there, but we were quite disappointed with the food. None of the food tasted good. The flavors were missing. They gave us two huge Dosa missing complete flour texture. The chutney tasted all the curry tasted bland. There was no salt in that we ordered a Puri, and it tasted oily, and the potato curry that they gave with us was completely match. Everything lagged the flava the people were really nice. The hospitality was great. The service was amazing, but the food was not at all good. The ambience inside was a little dirty. It was not up to the quality of Families to go have a meal there. I ordered the cheese masala dosa. It came with cheese and an onion/potato filling that wasn't too spicy at all. Even though the restaurant was full, our food came very quickly. Sambar and fresh coconut chutney come with whatever dosa you order. Dosa's are crispy and they can make it to however you prefer. The food is very good and comes with good portions. If you want to try authentic South Indian food, then this is definitely a place to try (though,not a fan of their Chinese food). Could tell food was days old, over priced, over fried and just disgusting. We confirmed with the man we wanted beef curry and porotta and he gave us fish curry which was not even on the flyer. The porotta was yellow and looked moldy and the beef curry looks like it's been fried 18 times since last Tuesday with a bunch of curry leaves added to it. I have a new FAVORITE spot! Not only is it Indian food but it's vegetarian! I was sold just from checking their website. When I walked in I was immediately greeted with smiles. I felt like I knew them already. My server was so patient with me. There were a few menu items that I was not familiar with and he explained in detail. That was so helpful to me. Vegan Review: Pretty terrible experience. First off, dine in was not available despite it being checked on google. Ok, no problem, I'm still getting a thali even if I have to eat it in my car. So I call to ask if the thali is or can be made vegan (none of their stuff is labelled on the menu). There's a recording saying thalis are only available on weekends. Ok, totally not on the site, good to know. So I place my order and they say it's going to take 20 minutes. 5 ignored calls and nearly a full hour later a guy appears at the door and hands me the food. No apology, no explanation, just here you go. Alright jeez are you all good in there? Nothing broke, nobody injured? I noticed nobody else came to pick up food in the 45 minutes or so I sat waiting outside, so it's not like they were busy? Anyway, at this point I'm just thrilled to get the food. What else could go wrong? Well the order was ~half right and there was no silverware or napkins in the bag. Figures! Didn't have an extra hour to kill so I decided to eat later. Also their invalid SSL certificate having ass website makes a point to say they use eco friendly packaging and never styrofoam, but literally every single thing was packaged in styrofoam. Why?? Udipi Cafe used to be in Decatur but got relocated to Duluth. From what I remembered the restaurant in Decatur is bigger than Duluth. Now it is located off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. The booths themselves are small and kinda tight. The lady who sat behind me kept moving back and forth and it annoyed me, like she was a bipolar child who couldn't sit still. I ordered samosas, aloo bonda, papri chaat, and chana masala for my friend and me. A few moments later, our food slowly started to come out. The samosas were good. The aloo bondo was just okay, I've had better, the skin felt soggy. The flavors weren't there. Oh yeah, didn't love the mint chutney. The tamarind chutney tasted much better. Papri chaat was disappointing only cause I had much better, I felt it was the "chips" were hidden below and diced small so didn't have that nacho crunch as I remembered. Initially there was a Udipi Cafe in Decatur which they moved now to Duluth area with new management. This is been run by a south Indian family. Wife and husband managing the restaurant. Very nice people and very welcoming. South Indian food. One of the very few Indian places around that does not have a buffet.That helps if you want to have some good food and not over-stuff yourselves. Excellent food, excellent service, very nice atmosphere. The staff was super accommodating, all of the food was very tasty. Its all vegetarian, and everything came out very quickly. Reasonable pricing of most of the items. The worst thing about this place is their coconut chutney which is consistently terrible, they need to change the recipe of it. I had my all time favorite from them that is Spring Dosa. It's yummy as always. They do have ample free parking in front of the restaurant. Authentic South Indian dishes. Went to Udipi for lunch and returned disappointed now. New management. Non veg food also now. Food was stale. I returned the coconut chutney as it had gone bad. They said they forgot to keep it in ice! Gave me more but that had no seasoning and was so watery and seemed like made with coconut flakes. Gulabjamun was old too. Smelled funky. Thali was so sub par. The lady had a cradle bassinet for her newborn right in the middle of the restaurant. She changed his poop diaper in one for the tables!! Udupi cafe was originally a traditional Karnataka style veg restaurant. It seems to have been bought by someone who doesn't understand or care ab-what would be expected under that restaurant name. Neither is it only-vegetarian anymore, nor is it anywhere in the ballpark of what one expects in a 'udupi cafe'. I gave a catering order for a full tray of 'Bisi Bele Baath' for a party of 50 people and even checked with them while ordering, if they can do it as expected in traditional karnataka style and was told - yes they can. To the rude shock of all the party folks, it was a tasteless tray of some form of vegetable rice with one vegetable that tasted like celery sparsely used. Most of the tray went uneaten in the party. I would have called them to give this feedback had it been just a miss, but it is not acceptable that they said they can do it and give a bizarre item instead. Most importantly these guys need to change their name board completely. No more misleading the public on Udupi or vegetarian. Hence posting this review so people don't come to them like I did, expecting something by brand and get disappointed. Also, the higher average stars in yelp reviews for this restaurant from several years ago is now misleading, given the changes since it recently got bought out. Not sure if yelp has a threshold for really old reviews to be removed or have them earn reviews from new mode of operation. Good South Indian food, with influences from various parts of South India making their way into their offerings. Not your typical Andhra Cuisine. We ordered a Thali for Dinner (an ensemble of different tastes and flavours organised and served in a single platter, Mai I say 7 course! ), Malabar Parotta, Avial and Dosa. All turned out to be good. Eating out at Veg only restaurants is rare for us, but we enjoyed the whole experience, and they have Vegan options too!! Staff are not overtly friendly in your face, will not come bug you in the middle of your dinner, which is welcome. They will let you enjoy your food and noticeable is that they are always available at hand to help you immediately, if needed. Very clean place, spotless dining area. Very disappointed to walk into udipi today and find out that even though their signs say they are a vegetarian restaurant they now serve meat as well. It was nice to have a South Indian vegetarian restaurant nearby and we didn't get to order much from them due to the pandemic but now we - and many of our friends - are far less likely to go even as the pandemic recedes. Perhaps the owners are changing things to help the business do better but humbly, I might suggest they might be pulling the wrong levers to improve. A lot of the existing loyal customers of this restaurant and the brand it has associated with it are related to vegetarian South Indian food! read more

Tell me BEFORE I order. Tell me when you greet me at the door. I was sat by the kitchen and I can't tell you how many times I heard the microwave beeping, open and close. The poori was so good! It was perfectly fried, it was airy, light, everything you want a poori to be. The rasam was absolute yum!!! Avial was also very delicious. I loved every curry from that platter. However the poppard was soggy.... only disappointing thing of that platter. The udipi royal dinner was also pretty nice, I had vada which wasn't that mind blown, but very decent, and I had paper thin dosa. That was bomb. I had so much fun with it! And it was huge! The All You Can Eat Dosas on Mondays have completely changed! Worst ever! Now theywant you to choose all 5 at once and they bring it to you in one plate. Each was folded in half. Post Covid craving for dosa cannot be fulfilled especially when you cannot make dosa at home. Though I am well-equipped and knowledged to cook almost everything on this earth, including great sambhar, I especially stay away from dosa and medu vara. These are typical south Indian cuisines, not so a Bengali staple, yet very popular. But somehow, I feel trying dosa at home is not worth it; the spread never comes out so perfect and crisp. Not that all restaurants can make dosa, but, yes, I generally go out to buy a dosa. Last week one evening, my husband wanted to have something warm like dosa, so we went to Udipi, just right from peachtree industrial boulevard. Due to Covid, restaurant dine-in was empty, but we took a chance to have our food there itself. I don't know about their other items, but dosa was very very good. I ordered paper masala dosa, and my husband ordered the ghee roasted masala dosa. Their serving style was just the way I like------ hugely spread across the plate, optimum crispiness, inspite of the masala stuffed inside. The coconut chutney had a very strong flavor, the right note of cocnut and curry leaves. The masala could have been slightly more spicier, and they could have added some extra ingredients like chopped shallots, fried coconut and peanuts for better tasting masala, but in combination, everything was worth going back for. The sambhar was so-so, because it missed the hit of tamarind (and I say this because we make better sambhar at home), but Udipi is really a dosa place. We ordered coffee too, and I appreciate that the restaurant manager personally went our to get coffee ingredients, probably because they weren't having any in the kitchen (may be for Covid nobody dined in there since March). He was very friendly and eager to know our preferences on food. The coffee, appropriately served in south Indian style, the coffee was also a relief in the cold winter evening. I will surely go back for dosa again. I have had dosa in US, in quite a few veg Indian restaurants, but not all can bring the right crunch and texture. But Udipi surely knows their dosa. read more

I've never had South Indian cuisine before so I didn't really know what to expect. We got there about 10 mins before they opened, but they seated us right away. The interior is nice and had a mix of modern and traditional Indian decors. This is a purely vegetarian restaurant so don't expect chicken tikka masala to be served here. I ordered the Jaipur Paneer Dosai. It's cheese sautéed with onions and spices. It was served with a green dipping sauce (not sure what it's called) that's coconut base and another type of dipping sauce. I was pleasantly surprised and it was very filling. Dining at Udipi Cafe, I had one of those moments where I hadn't a clue what I had just eaten - but it was really good. Lacking knowledge of vegetarian Indian fare, we simply had to take a shot in the dark when ordering off of the menu. Alas, the menu was of little help (unless you're of Indian origin or have dined frequently on this sort of cuisine before). The menu named the dish, but didn't really elaborate any further with what was going to be on it. So, we took a shot at two of the lunch specials - my wife ordered the North Indian Thali, I ordered the South Indian Thali. Our Thali's, once they arrived, looked very similar: A bowl of rice in the middle, with various types of Indian flatbread (quite possibly bhatoora, puri, and roti - but I am not certain), surrounded by eight small bowls containing various vegetarian options: yogurt, dal, sambar (a lentil-based stew), rasam (soup), chutney, pickled vegetables, payasam (a sweet rice pudding dessert with nuts and in this case, pineapple), etc. The Southern was slightly more spicy. The Northern had a chickpea based dish (chana daal?) and saag paneer (spinach and paneer cheese). It was a lot of food, and only a little more than $10 for each thali. Not bad at all. I enjoyed most of the offerings on my plate - especially the rice pudding. Yum! As others have noted, even though it is a vegetarian restaurant, you won't miss not having meat. I encourage all fellow meat-eaters to step outside of their comfort zone and give this place a try. You won't regret it. read more

After arriving here, we were seated after about 10 mins of waiting although all tables except one was free at the restaurant. After we were handed the menus.. we got to know that the management has recently changed.. the restaurant was once pure vegetarian but now offers both veg and non-veg. We were handed off menus and after a while.. we gave our orders. The staff was polite and quick after seating us, so no complaints there. But once the food arrived.. we really couldn't enjoy anything we ordered as we wanted to.. the idlis we got for our granny were tough to chew on.. like the batter was old. The wadas were so too. My partner ordered a ghee roast dosai which was better than the iddly, but had negligible salt in it resulting in the dosa not tasting as it should. I ordered a Mysore masala dosai which turned out to be the best on our table but without the masala still being so oily you could see it in the sides of the bowl it was served in. After forcefully eating about half the food cas we were all really hungry and also partly didn't want to waste the food.. we all gave up and went home to make ourselves a quick small meal to fill ourselves rest of the way.
