I loved the Makapu'u mocha! Most mochas give you a very light chocolate flavor if at all. This was PACKED with chocolate! You could see the chunks of chocolate on top and scrape it off the bottom of the cup from what settled. Highly recommend! Wasn't super impressed with the Kula latte. You couldn't taste the vanilla at all. The lavender flavor was pretty strong. It was almost a little flowery. Parking is a little tricky in the area. We were lucky to find free meter parking right in front, but that doesn't usually happen for us. Definitely coming back for the makapu'u mocha if I'm in the area. read more

If you are visiting Kailua, don't miss stopping into ChadLou's. I was able to grab coffee there four times while visiting my sister and loved every cup I got. There is currently no indoor seating, but if you don't want to get it to go, there are quite a few tables outside. There are a lot of different bags of beans to purchase, they will grind them for you if needed. I grabbed a bag from the Ka'anapali Estate that I'm looking forward to grinding soon. You can't go wrong with any of the drinks on the menu, but do yourself a favor and try one of the specialty lattes or mochas. The Honu Latte is a lovely combo of caramel and macnut flavored sweetener. Or if you choose one of the mochas, they are made with chocolate from Mānoa Chocolates which is also in Kailua. The Makapu'u Mocha is especially delicious with coconut milk and macnut flavoring. read more

We came to ChadLou's on the last day of a one month stay on Oahu. We stopped first at OverEasy for the Kalua Pig Hash (somewhat overrated), and then walked down the street to find this GEM of a coffee shop! Everything from the ambiance to the seating options to the friendly and extremely thoughtful barista made us wish we could stay longer! The coffee was outstanding. Just know that if you come in a day when only one person is running the place, you need to bring a positive laid-back attitude! Don't come here with any of that negative mainland energy that's "go go go" and you will have an incredible time. Really good options to please any coffee lover. The girls and I stopped by for an afternoon pick-me-up. We ordered some lattes and were able to customize milk (oat milk, whole milk, soy milk, etc.) and sweetness. I personally had the iced Kula Latte which came with a shot of espresso, lavender, and vanilla sugar cane syrup. Highly recommended. Just ask them to tone down on the syrup so it's not overly sweet. We love supporting local small businesses especially during these times, and I would encourage y'all to do the same! I rather spend the $5 here than at a Starbucks or Pete's anyway. Very disappointed, to be honest. Came here on a Sunday with my laptop to try and get some work in. Ordered my iced latte and sat down, only to be unable to connect to the wifi. I shared to the barista that the wifi wasn't connecting, he said that it's free and he doesn't know how to service the router. So if it works, great & if not, *shrug.* Not the kind of service or amenity I'm expecting from a coffeeshop, at all. I think it's generally expected that you would have working wifi, or at least care if it's not working. Wish I could take back my tip. And can't believe we drove half an hour over here specifically for this coffeeshop. No indoor seating, outdoor only. Met a lady who said the wifi hasn't been working for the last year, and she thought it was just cuz she had an old phone. Latte was decent though, I'll admit. So if you're just passing through for a cup of coffee, enjoy. If you're looking for a place to work, try someplace else. Especially since a latte here is $10+. Update: lady we were talking to says that she comes every day and usually the service is better. She seems to be a very staunch supporter, so glad this establishment has people like her to cheer for them. I hope the owners can improve their wifi for future visitors, and that the staff can be a bit more empathetic. If they just said, "I'm so sorry it's not working, I'll let the owners know" this would have been a very different review. For those looking for wifi, Cafe Kopi is a block away and not only has wifi, but also plenty of seating, pastries, and a pleasant ambiance. read more

I've been wanting to try Chadlou's for awhile now and unexpectedly came across it as I was driving through Kailua. I recognized the name immediately and pulled over to give it a try. I had the Iced Makapuu Mocha, which was bursting with flavor. It was the perfect blend of coconut and mac nut and even had bits of dark chocolate at the bottom (my favorite part!). They make the coffee right in front of you with their espresso machines and it was was nice and strong, I got my drink to-go, but they did have some cute outdoor seating (the inside seating is still closed due to COVID). While exploring the island, we made our way to ChadLou's due to all the positive Yelp reviews. Needless to say, I was underwhelmed. I ordered a cortado so I could experience their beans with a tiny bit of steamed milk. The hubby ordered the Iced Honu Latte which is macadamia caramel sweeteners with espresso and milk. My cortado was fairly bitter with a bite to it while the hubby's lacked flavor and was one noted. On the plus side, we ground and brewed their beans today for a pot of coffee and it was very good, smooth and not bitter whatsoever. read more

If you know me, you know I love coffee. When traveling I am always looking for the next best cup. Since I rarely come out to Kailua, I thought I would take the opportunity to drive out and have a taste of ChadLou's after looking at some of the other reviews. First, cute little spot, tables outside to eat, hang out and talk. Baristas were friendly. Now the coffee... We ordered 2 of their specials listed on the menu. Manoa Mocha and Honu Latte. Unfortunately, both fell very flat. The mocha had a very bitter taste. I like dark chocolate, but would like my coffee with a little sweetness. Friend ended up adding a few Splenda packets to make it drinkable. My honu latte was blah. Couldn't really taste the caramel or the Mac nut. Honestly I make a better latte at home with my nespresso, syrups, and frother. Pic shows both drinks with food from Cafe Kopi down the sidewalk a bit. Will try their drinks next time as I was pleasantly surprised with the taste of the mushroom and swiss croissant. Won't be back to ChadLou's. read more

We've come to ChadLou's in our last couple of trips to Oahu, and I think it's my favorite coffee shop in Kailua. While we're never here early enough in the day to try all of their options, their wide selection and tasting notes inspire a lot of appreciation for coffee. There's something for everyone, and hopefully during our next visit we can try a cup or two on our way to Lanikai. Service here has also been conducive to our relaxing- I've only seen one person working here at a time, so if you're in a rush, this might not be the best option. However, they're going as fast as they can and chatting with you while they're working. They're always chill and always seem like they enjoy what they're doing. And the drinks are good too, though if you're getting an iced version I suspect it's more ice than anything else. In our last visit, I tried the Mānoa Chocolate Mocha, which tasted great but was sadly gone after a couple sips. Definitely a coffee shop to sit down and relax at, and we hope to come back sometime soon. read more

Don't usually do too many reviews but I stopped here after doing the pillbox hike and as a coffee lover have to say this coffee I got is better than the average cup of joe. Inside is small but very cute with small items to buy and and a window to walk up to and order. I ordered the makapuu mocha -iced -and was in heaven upon first sip. There is actually dark chocolate in it! No coffee bitter taste at all and the perfect amount of sweetness (don't like overly sweet). Nice service I would definitely come back for more. I've been wanting to come here for a while. It's a lil pricey, but they have a lot of specialty lattes/types of drinks. I ordered a Iced coconut caramel latte, recommended by the nice guy who provided great service. He did warn me it would take 15 mins for my latte since he was the only one working on a Monday afternoon. Hi ChadLou's. 10/5 After taking a 30 min bus ride to your coffee shop hoping to grab some yummy coffee, it was in fact the opposite. I was greeted with some medium/average costumer service. I normally order a maple latte where I go but could not do so since you don't have maple. I ordered a sugar free vanilla oat latte. It was really bad so I came in and politely asked for a refund. The gal at the front said she did so I left and thought of nothing after. 4 days later and no refund. I can't call either because the phones are disconnected. :) please give me my money back. Excellent Cappuccinos and lattes made here, this barista knew how to make them right! Hubs ordered a CAP--rich dense flavor, micro foam was perfect! I went in a different direction with an iced HONU LATTE, flavored with caramel and macadamia nut! Creamy delicious, hit the right notes. Small interior ordering area--with merchandise to buy including small batch ice cream in a freezer, caught my eye! Although no indoor seating, there's plenty of outdoor seating on the wrap around veranda. ChadLou's also conducts COFFEE TASTINGS in a private room. Must sign up and preregister @ $25 per person. We grabbed some iced coffee before heading to Bellows Beach that hot Sunday morning. It was just the perfect beach drink for me! Yes, not beer or any liquor The lady in the counter even let me try the dark chocolate used to make this mocha. It's from @manoachocolate ! It was very rich and have that deep, dark, cocoa flavor - I loved it! We already know this will be a great drink because it is not only made with just any kind of chocolate syrup! It was indeed phenomenal - I honestly loved the chunks of chocolate in every sip! This was more chocolatey than coffee to me, which is not bad! A little on the pricier side, but it is worth it! I'll be back to try more! They also have @sagecreamery ice cream in their freezer for purchase. Maybe next time i'll bring a cooler! read more

This a convenient place with street parking and a place to sit outside. The inside where you order is interesting and not as clean looking a I would like....but they offer coffee's and tea's and they have some foo items in a refrigerator. My husband and I both got iced drinks. I ordered a mango tea and my husband ordered the iced latte with macadamia nut syrup. The girl that took our order wasn't really friendly and didn't seem like she was that happy to answer any questions about the teas. A friend and I wanted to get together for brunch and this was one of the places she recommended. Since I had never been there before, I figured it would be worth checking out, especially since I saw they had waffles! We checked out the menu clipboards. I decided on a churro waffle--featuring cinnamon sugar and a side of Nutella--while my friend ordered a strawberry waffle. She also ordered a hot chai while we waited for our food. Everyone at the register was very friendly and informative. We were able to grab seats at one of the tables in the back without a problem. We chatted and my friend finished off her chai. (I had a sip and it was very good.) However, we still didn't have our waffles. It wasn't very busy and several customers had come and gone with their food while we waited. So my friend got a coffee and we continued to wait. Ultimately, it took over 30 minutes for us to get our two waffles. When they were delivered, the waitress apologized profusely for the wait. She explained that their waffle maker was acting wonky and it had burned our first two waffles. (I suspect they also ran out of batter and she was training someone new, based on the snippets of conversation we heard coming from the kitchen.) I really appreciated that she was honest with us and acknowledged the wait, since far too often servers will try to pretend like nothing happened. We both really enjoyed our waffles once we got them. The syrup there is also excellent so you don't need to slather your breakfast items. I really liked the pairing of Nutella with the cinnamon sugar. As a whole, 3.5 stars because of the wait, but I appreciate they were apologetic about the delay and didn't give us burned waffles! read more

Yummmm! We were headed to Kailua Beach Park and wanted to grab some caffeine on the go. ChadLou's coffee is excellent and made very well: Manoa Mocha: This was a real decadent treat! Heavy on the intense, rich chocolate with a trace of espresso. It was also a bit thick so it reminded me of sipping chocolate (not quite THAT viscous, but close!) I definitely recommend this for all chocolate lovers. SF Vanilla latte: The vanilla syrup is very light and did not have a heavy vanilla flavoring, so depending on your preference, you either love it or you wish there was more flavor. The espresso itself was light and mellow, and went well with the drink. Those of you who want heavier coffee flavor may want to go with an extra shot though. Will I come again? YES! Absolutely! On a recent sunny Sunday morning, my boyfriend and I decided to venture out of our own neighborhood and into the quirky and lively town of Kailua for a morning stroll. We figured we check out the Farmers Market, get some exercise, and do some window shopping. Feeling both parched and fatigued from the heat of the Hawaiian sun, we decided that a coffee would be the best cure for our sluggish behavior. We were on our way, headed towards the Protea Zero Waste Store when we spotted this local coffee shop! To our surprise this coffee shop was just what we needed to fuel the remainder of our morning stroll. Although currently under renovation, that doesn't stop this coffee shop from serving up some pretty awesome coffee and lattes. The boyfriend got an americano (per usual) and I opted to try their guava ginger latte. Both were fantastic! I'm not a huge coffee drinker but I think the next time we're in the area I'm definitely coming back for more of their coffee! After speaking with Sheila (the kind woman who runs this place) she gave me the whole story about ChadLou's, how it came to be and where it's going. ChadLou's is a local, independent, farm-to-cup coffee company that grows, processes, roasts, brews, and serves, great coffee (their coffee farm is not too far away from their shop!). Originally founded in 2010, with the hope of creating a true community space for people to connect over food and coffee, they are now set up in their roastery (hence the tiny renovations)! Keeping community and great coffee in mind, they intend to open up a roastery/bar/open community space area to keep their dreams and community focused intentions alive. It is small businesses like these that make our Oahu community so great and filled with so much character, heart, soul. I will definitely be back and will definitely continue to support this local coffee shop when I am in the area. read more

The person serving clearly had no people skills--perhaps they're lucky to have a job or maybe they even own the business. This must be a great place for locals, because it would take a good long while to work your way through all of the possible combinations and permutations of estate coffee options, preparation methods, and drink recipes. As a visitor, I didn't have that many years, but the Ka'anapali pour-over I sipped on their veranda was quite good. I think that one of Chadlou's pre-arranged tastings would be the best way to experience this place and the various home-grown and roasted small batch Hawaiian (and other) beans now available. There's not a lot else on offer, however. That means no indoor seating, no ambience, and not much to eat. What food they do offer is mostly cold pre-made breakfast sandwiches that you can heat up in a small toaster oven. They weren't "gas station awful", but there's certainly something to be said for presentation (and fruits/vegetables). It's clear where these folks' priorities and energy lie. read more
