It was clearly on the much more affordable side of afternoon tea options, especially considering the ones I've frequented in the past range from $60-120 per person. AMBIANCE (2/5 stars) So I guess this portion is "you get what you pay for". For the more expensive afternoon tea spots, the dishware/teapots and tea rooms are very detailed/beautiful. At Chado Tea Room, the teapots and plates look old and in need of replacing. The chairs/carpet/walls also look worn down and cheap. You could wear very casual clothes and fit right in. So I wouldn't call this "high tea", it's more like "casual tea". TEA (4/5 stars) Tea selection was hugeee! I like that their menu is pretty descriptive. I chose a pu-er tea that was really delicious and fragrant. We also had a tasting of about 12 teas (ranging from white to green to black etc) in tiny plastic tasting cups which was fun. SANDWICHES/ SCONES/ DESSERTS (3/5 stars); I actually enjoyed their sandwiches quite a bit (4/5 stars). The smoked salmon sandwich was very memorable, as was the cucumber sandwich. Surprising because I normally do not like sandwiches much (at all...). The scones were very mediocre (2/5 stars); much too dry and lacking any kind of wow factor. I actually only ate a few bites and left the rest uneaten. The macarons was average as well. SERVICE (4/5 stars) Had really friendly service. Oh boy, where do I start with my experience at Chado Tea Room? It was disappointing and made my friend hurl. The bread was stale and drier than athlete's foot and clogged my throat on the way down. But the real kicker was the tea itself. We ordered many types of tea and only one was drinkable; one tasted like garbage that was left outside marinating for a couple of months and the other one tasted like finely aged urine. I ordered a fancy-sounding blend that promised to whisk me to a magical land of flavor, but all I got was a mouthful of sadness. It tasted like someone had brewed a pot of water with a single leaf and then forgot to add any actual tea. I've had tap water that tastes better and would rather drink hose water from my house. We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon to have tea after a show, we were seated right away. The table was beautifully decorated with mismatched tea cups and plates, quite charming I would say. Unfortunately a few of the tea cups were dirty and some were chipped. The waitress was friendly and very efficient in taking all 10 of our orders as well as bringing the food out in a timely and organized manner. The food itself was subpar especially for the price. I ordered a grilled chicken panini which came with a pre dressed salad. The dressing on the salad was repulsive and tasted like it went bad last year. Because of the size of our party and the fact that after serving the waitress disappeared I was unable to ask for a remake. The chicken was okay, the bread was nice and soft but the chicken was extremely dry to the point of not being able to chew it. For a $20 sandwich I'd expect much better. My friends who ordered the tea service said the scones were okay and the cookies were decent. My friend who had the summer salad also said the chicken was extremely dry. Went here about two months or so back lolz We had gotten a Groupon for tea for two for this location. My boyfriend had a tough time putting in a reservation because the one who picked up was impatient while my boyfriend explained the Groupon we had. He finally was able to get the reservation in and we made sure to be there early. Once our reservation time came up, we entered inside the restaurant and there was literally one couple in there other than us. We were seated by this pillar at a small table for two and assisted with our Groupon situation after being left at the table with all the staff taking their time to attend to us and the other couple. But once we got our order in and the teas started coming out with our scones, we were happy campers. The scones with the cream and strawberries were great and I liked being able to have the teas refilled in a sense of adding hot water to it once it's done. We got to pick four different teas and just remember that the ones I picked weren't as good as the ones my boyfriend picked lolz (Posted pics awhile back ago with the names of the tea we got). Myself and one other member of the party were gluten free, and they were incredibly accommodating when they heard of our limitations! They made gluten free substitutions instead of simply taking away items, as everything on the "normal" tea was reflected by a GF option on ours. Chado is one of my absolute favorite tea rooms in the LA Area. My friends and I held a small bridal shower on Chado's outdoor patio (2021 May 29) and Alexis was the absolute best! There was another woman on duty with her and they took such excellent care of us. My Yelp buddy Liz O and I wanted to try this location since I have already tried the Pasadena location. I bought a living social deal for two at $31 which included Afternoon tea, selection of tea sandwiches and limited selection of dessert. I got lost finding this tea room....which is located on the second floor, inside this huge mall that I have never been to. I normally tend to stay away from Hollywood and Highland. Luckily I went and asked this guy at a visitor information booth. I felt like one of the tourists. The tea room is very quaint and charming. You forget that you're inside a mall. My only complaint is there were some mixups with their policies of LS purchases. Apparently they don't do tea tastings (part of the LS deal) on weekends. Honestly I didn't care anyhow. I had the same tea tasting at the Pasadena location and it was drawn out and long. We were starving cause it took 2 hours of explaining the history of each of their teas, and how they were hand picked, etc, etc. The Pasadena location gave us an 8oz bag of free loose tea of our choosing as a gift. This location not only did not offer the tea tasting but also didn't give any free gifts. We explained to them that's what the Pasadena location did so the manager made an exception. However he only gave us 4oz instead of 8oz. Overall the afternoon tea was good. The mini sandwiches were great. The tea in our teapot was weak and we noticed there weren't loose tea inside. They pre-steeped the tea for a certain amount of time and just poured the tea in the pot for us. Although I preferred the actual tea leaves in the pot which would've made a difference for me. I love having English Tea for brunch! All the nice pastries and tea over some girly talks. I'm not particular fond of this location and the setting of where it's at. I was expecting something unreasonably pricey given the Hollywood and highland location, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that a pot of high-quality tea here didn't break the bank: about $4 for a pot that had about 4 cups worth. In my mind, a better deal than Starbucks. My friend and I tried one of the Ayurvedic teas, and unfortunately it wasn't quite to my taste - the licorice root came through really strongly and gave it somewhat of a cloying sweetness. I think I would've ended up enjoying another blend a lot more, and I'd be willing to come back to give it another try. My friend also got a smoked salmon sandwich, and I tried a bite - this tasted pretty good considering smoked salmon is almost always great, but it felt a little unsubstantial for a meal - more appropriate for a teatime snack I guess. During my 3 years in college in London I compared every afternoon tea to Chado. The best selection of tea in the country (be sure to check out their full book) and such adorable afternoon tea sets. I don't eat eggs but I'll always devour their tea egg sandwich. When my grandmother was gravely anorexic due to Alzheimers, we could always bring her to Chado as the tomato soup was the only food we could get her to eat. We had a lovely tea here celebrating my daughter's birthday before our show at the Pantages yesterday. We let them know ahead of time we had gluten free members in our party and they made sure they had all the same menu items as the others. Tip: you MUST have the tomato basil soup, it's delish! I brought my mom here for an afternoon tea party when she was in town visiting from Arizona. I scored the "celebration tea service" for 2 for $25 on Living Social. This was valid for this location only so it was a good excuse to spend the afternoon in Hollywood. Luckily I checked Yelp beforehand and found out that the tea room is inside of the mall/shopping center so you can't see it from the street. When we walked in I could see why it's important to make reservations, it was quaint but had a decent sized patio. We had multiple servers which was a little confusing at times but we just rolled with it. They have tons of teas to choose from! Our first server suggested the raspberry champagne white tea and some sort of African tea. They were both very potent and tasty, the raspberry champagne one was our favorite! The celebration tea service also comes with a cute tower of half sandwiches, scones and pieces of cakes and cookies. It was beautiful to look at and it went perfect with the ambiance. The sandwiches were pretty good; my fav was the smoked salmon. They finish off the service with an ice cream sundae with a sauce infused with tea. It was a great surprise considering we thought the meal was over. This was the perfect way to spend mother/daughter time; we even purchased some of the raspberry champagne white tea to take home! Before attending a premiere at The Chinese Theatre, we had some time to spare, so we decided to grab a bite at the Chado Tea Room. I'm shocked there wasn't a line out the door because of the fantastic tea, pastry, salad, and sandwich selections! Everything was out-of-this-world delicious. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars is that the portions are surprisingly massive. We ordered two types of tea and two sandwiches, and it was enough for 4-5 people. Each tea order can be split between 2-3 people. It being our first time at Chado Tea Room, we wish the waitress would have told us, so we didn't waste food. One of my besties and her daughter joined me and my daughter for Galentines tea here on a Saturday early afternoon right when they opened. We were the first people there and pretty much had the place to ourself for a good half hour. I felt that the man that was there at the time was very kind and helpful and did a great job with etiquette. My friend and I both ordered the Chado Afternoon Tea which came with four halved tea sandwiches, a scone with whipped cream and jam, sugar cookies and tiny macaroons. I was told that the egg sandwiches were a favorite and they were, indeed, absolutely horrendous. My daughter was excited to have the egg sandwiches and she quickly spit her bite out. I thought it was just as bad. I should have read the fine print that said the eggs are cooked with tea. It's horrible. I enjoyed the chicken sandwiches. The scone was delicious. I was too full to go for the macaroons and sugar cookies. I ended up eating my daughters grilled cheese because she didn't like it. This place is probably not for a picky 7 year old that doesn't like anything except for French fries and hamburgers. This place is perfect for two moms that want to have a girls tea without kids. Lesson learned. Just don't get the egg salad sandwiches. You can park in the Hollywood and Highland parking structure and with validation only pay $3 for a two hour visit. I've been to the Chado located in Downtown LA many times, and didn't realize that there was a location in the Highland Center. Stephen scored a Travel zoo deal (think Groupon) and we decided to compare this location to Little Tokyo. LOCATION: Located on the 2nd floor, on the Dolby Theater side of the escalator. Its across from the Sweets store, and it blends in with the building, so it can be hard to find. The inside holds about 8-10 tables, and there is a patio area which holds 6-8 tables, with umbrella covering for shade. We chose to dine indoors, at the table closest to the bathroom. The location wasn't bad if they had closed the kitchen door! Stephen kept staring at the kitchen, with the door propped open with a broom. He could hear the kitchen staff conversing en Español, and looking at the "Monster" drink logo. Very bad "show" on the restaurant's part. SERVICE: It was ok. We had 3 different servers and after they took down our voucher for the "Celebration Afternoon Tea", they came back to get our tea choices. I ordered a chai and Stephen gave the number corresponding to his tea. The server asked for the name, not the number, which Stephen told him the name. I was served the correct drink, but Stephen received the wrong drink. When the other server told him the drink number, Stephen corrected him and said its not 35, but 55. No biggie, the server took the wrong one away and made him a new pot, but still don't really know if we got the right tea. We were asked many times if thing were ok. FOOD: The Celebration tea consisted of: - an appetizer (tomato bisque soup or salad) - a choice of tea (100s to choose from) and you can have it iced, if you want - sandwich assortment (egg, cucumber, chicken, salmon), scones with cream and jam, and dessert - a tea float consisting of an ice cream scoop, cream or yogurt (it was a bit tart) fruit and cookie doused in an iced tea. The food came out promptly, and it was good. I particularly liked the tea infused egg salad sandwich. Stephen thought the shredded chicken cranberry sandwich was a bit dry, and after thinking about it, perhaps it was. The full afternoon tea is $25 per person, but if you can find a groupon or travelzoo, its basically a BoGo, which makes it worth while. Parking available at Hollywood and Highland. Get your ticket validated, and it'll be $4. We ended up playing tourist for a few hours, so our parking ended up costing $6, which in the Big CIty, is normal and actually quite cheap! UPDATE Originally I was going to give a 3 1/2 star rating, but after viewing the photos of other yelpers, I think those with a groupon gets treated a little differently than a full paying customer. - Our scones came with a tiny cup of clotted cream Other photos had a big bowl of cream and fresh fruit. - For dessert we got 2 cookies and 2 tiny white chocolate cups filled with cream. Other photos showed a big slice of cake with larger pastries - Our tea float wasn't in an ice cream float cup but a small little bowl. It wasn't even garnished very well.. a 1/2 cookie and 1 slice of strawberry. After taking this all into consideration, and the poor "showmanship" of the kitchen, the mix up on the tea, and little things like that, I have to give this place a 3 stars. If you're going to treat me differently for having a voucher, then don't expect me to tip you based on full price of $50 (which I did... generously!). read more
