I get that it is a "hole in the wall" and should not expect much, however, the chicken was hard as a rock, the lime they provide was old and rotten, the soup was not bad, but there were bits of random hard bits in it. read more

Tastiest pad Thai in the neighborhood! I've been to quite a few Thai restaurants here and a lot of them do not have tasty sauce like I'm used to. I was driving home from the pet store and this place was on the way. It's a tiny hole in the wall with only street parking. It appears family run and there are only a couple seats to sit on inside. Good thing I ordered to go! I was promised my food in 20 minutes but I got it in 10! The pad Thai comes garnished with peanuts and bean sprouts and it even comes with a little cup of Thai chili pepper which was very much appreciated and made the noodles more tasty. I tend to order at Chai Thai pretty often since it's literally a 3 minute drive from my house. The only reason why I get takeout is because it's quite small and can get stuffy with a full house. The usual order for me is either pineapple fried rice or pad kee mao, but their curries are delicious as well. The overall attitude of the staff is usually really nice and welcoming. So I'd say just ask for a little extra sauce and you'll have the perfect dish. The owner is way cool. Been getting takeout here on and off for the past 5 years since I live close by. This is a small family owned and operated restaurant. The lady that picks up the phone to take orders speaks perfect English so you won't have issues ordering. We normally get the basil fried rice or the Chai Thai fried rice and it is always good. Pad se mao was good too but the noodles were too soft. I tried the crab fried rice once but it wasn't as good, it wasn't as flavorful as another Thai place that makes it. Parking can be scary as you have to park on the few street parking spots outside and wait until you're clear and open your door to get out as fast as possible before the cars start buzzing by again. The place is a trip, on the inside it looks like an old ice cream parlor or a shoe repair business. It's small and narrow with seating around the cashier area. It probably seats maybe 12-15 people tops. Not exactly the Taj Mahal but that's Ok. I ordered the Evil Jungle (L4) L is for "lunch special" It was really wonderful, not oversalted and a perfect balance of fresh veggies and noodles in a silky curry sauce with fresh cilantro on top, definitely Get This. My Boss loved her Pad Thai, she said it was one of the best she ever had. She had what I call, "love in her eyes" So, I was kinda blown away by the food here, I would go back for sure. I expected more with the wisdom and foolishness of Yelpers rating Chai Thai as one of the highest in East Portland. Instead it was an epoch of averageneness. It was just Chai Thai ... to go. We got an assortment of Thai classics including Fried Rice, Pad Thai Noodles, Green Beans & Chicken, and one the house specials Fried Fish. The service was outstanding and super friendly while ordering and waiting. We were on our way in just 15 minutes with our pile of food. The Fried Rice would likely be the only thing I'd order again because there must be better options on the menu than what we tried. Chai Thai was neither the best or worst of Thai.
