I've been wanting to try this place for awhile now and finally had the chance to give it a try for dinner. The parking situation for this place is the WORST. There was only really a few spots for street parking in front of the restaurant. This place would definitely me more of a restaurant where most people order Togo because it is a very tiny restaurant. What we ordered: Satay chicken - it was pretty good, but my friend and I were quite displeased with how small this is. Spicy basil fried rice with beef - I should have known better than to not be careful on the spice level in a new restaurant. I asked for spicy and it there was definitely a kick. I loved the flavor though and I could still eat it just fine. Pad se ew with beef - We asked for medium spicy on this and it was pretty spicy as well. The flavor was delicious. I love that they make their food spicy, but for people who can't handle as much spice I recommend that you go more mild than you usually would. My friend ordered Thai iced tea and asked for no carrots in her pad se ew. Unfortunately she did not get either request fulfilled. This place is a favorite and dare I say maybe even a staple for myself and my coworkers. We find ourselves making large to-go orders here, often multiple times a week. The only times I've been disappointed are when I've wanted their food when they're closed while visiting family in Thailand. Keep in mind: If you're looking for a large, spacious restaurant to bring a big group of family or friends into...stick with the to-go route, or this may not be the place for you. This place is tiny, there are only about 5 or 6 tables in the entire restaurant, plus a few barstools around a small countertop seating area. (If you're dining in and it's a busy day, prepare to potentially get cozy with the people around you.) If you're looking for a fancy, more 'high end' appearing place, again, this may not be for you. We're talking about a small, older building right off the corner of 141st in SE Portland, this ain't the Pearl District or Lake Oswego. Please also keep patience in mind as there are generally only 3-4 people working in the restaurant at once. If they're slammed with dine-ins and order-outs, you may wait a little longer than usual. I read and heard so many good things about Chai Thai I've been wanting to get here for some delicious Thai for a year. Lunch and a catch-up with an out of town friend and this was the place! She ordered tofu Pad Thai spice level 4, I ordered chicken Pad see ew spice level 3. Pad Thai -4 stars. Great flavor, nice portion of tofu, fresh sprouts, carrots, peanuts brought the heat. Pad se ew- 3 stars. Amazing flavor! But, overcooked gummy noodles made the dish difficult to eat (in a way that eating a mouthfull of gummy candy that seems to just keep on getting bigger the more you chew it). Chicken was also very dry and chewy. Addictive flavor with issues. I would think the cooks had an off day except I've seen the "gummy" noodles mentioned before. I really hate to leave negative reviews for local, mom and pop businesses, but i feel to do otherwise, or to stay silent, would be unfair to potential other yelpers who are looking to get some delicious, authentic Thai cuisine. now my experience may be an anomaly, and the chef might have been having an off night, and/or i may be more used to a very specific type of thai cooking that's more popular in Los Angeles/Central California, but i like to think that i'm pretty discerning when it comes to Thai Food, living in Los Angeles, near Thai Town, and rooming with a Thai roommate in college whose dad was a Thai chef, and i learned to make my own panang and larb, so i think i'm maybe just a notch above average/typical when it comes to Thai cuisine, but this place was not delicious. i came on a monday afternoon/evening, which was slightly sprinkling and there were a lot of to-go orders being made/ready to go, so that when i came in, by myself, it was assumed i was there to pick up a to-go order, but i wasn't. i sat myself at a little counter and perused the menu and went for some mini spring rolls and pad see ewe, typical thai fare. had i been slightly hungrier i would've tried for some panang, as i like to compare everyone else's to my own, but i opted just for what i ordered. Service: this was probably the best part of the meal. although i was hard to see, hidden behind a sort of solid screen that separated me from the kitchen, i could tell pretty much off the bat that this was a nice mom and pop shop, where the locals came, where the lady taking take out calls seemed to know everybody that was calling, would say, "it's been a while!" when other regulars came in, etc. etc. she had a sort of nice, casual, familiarity with people and even myself that made her very unassuming and easy to talk to. she made sure i had water and checked in regularly enough and was conscious of the eye contact which would indicate that i needed something. so she was a great server, and she made me feel comfortable etc. etc. however the food, oh. oh boo. i was hungry and just wanted a few bites of something delicious and this was not it. the mini spring rolls were just ... egg rolls with too much cabbage. and the sweet and sour sauce was so basic. granted, it's a basic order, but it just didn't deliver. and the pad see ewe, which i often judge a restaurant by was subpar. the noodles were too sweet and too mushy, and difficult to eat as a result. there was a good ratio of meat and vegetables to noodles, which i appreciated, but when the noodles fail, and the noodles make up 80% of the dish, then the dish fails. i wanted to like this place, i really did, for you haters who love this place. i like thai food! i yelped a bunch of places and came to this one! i trusted you, yelp! but i do not want to lead others astray. again, this could be a very isolated experience, and i might just have different tastes than the typical oregonian/portlandian, and if such is the case, i do apologize for littering your beloved restaurant with this negative review, but i did not enjoy my experience here, and i am possibly as saddened by it as anyone else. i wish this place well and am glad that others seem to enjoy it, given the amount of to-go orders and pick ups and easy banter that the lady had with everyone, but i did not, and alas, that is what yelp is made up of, individual accounts, and this was mine. read more

I would have never found this place without Yelp. It's nestled in a TINY space next to a bridal rental store and a tire shop... inside is very small, but they know how to work with what they've got! I came during COVID for takeout a few weeks back, and when I had called in the order, I mentioned that I wanted it "as spicy as they'd be willing to go". When I arrived, the woman working the counter was ON FIRE! She was whipping around, taking calls, greeting guests, organizing food on the counter, and generally being a badass. She got my name as I entered, and was like "oh, spice guy, right?", and I laughed as I confirmed that I was indeed the "spice guy". They were super busy so there was a bit of a wait, so I hung out inside while they caught up. Eventually, my name was called, and as the woman was boxing it up, she exclaimed "whew!"... I said "Really? That spicy, huh?", to which she replied "Honey, all I saw was red when I looked in there". I started cracking up as she insisted on putting extra sides of chili flakes and oil in my bag, just in case it wasn't spicy enough. To be fair, I've had trouble getting actually spicy food from Thai places in the past. Anyway, I got the food home and my wife and I dug in. My first thought was "WOW, I don't have to add anything to this at all... it's ACTUALLY spicy!"... I looked over at my wife, and saw she was STRUGGLING even though I only requested "spicy" for hers. We had some pad thai, and green curry. Both were absolutely delicious (though a bit spicy for my wife, haha)! I was so satisfied with their food. I'll definitely be coming back! I saw the good Yelp reviews so I went here on my lunch break. When I arrived, the restaurant was empty of customers. It's a small place to-go orders only. I grabbed a menu and told the lady working the front of the restaurant that I heard the food was good here. Strangely, she didn't acknowledge me. I saw what I wanted and put down the menu ready to order. A few minutes later another customer comes in and is greeted immediately, and is asked if she was picking up an order. The customer said no, they would order at the restaurant and picked up a menu to look at. Meanwhile, I'm standing there waiting to put in my order. A couple minutes go by and the lady goes back to the customer and asks what they want to order, completely ignoring me. That's when I got fed up and grumbled "the hell with this" and left. read more

Tiny but efficient place. The staff seem like family, and they have a great rapport with their regulars. We got our food to-go, as there wasn't any seating available when we arrived. Yum. Ye-uuuuum. Once again Yelp delivers a solid place to grab some grub, even when it isn't so pretty. My co-worker and I had picked a place that ended up being dead in the water, so we started to drive and wander around SE to find food. Oddly, it's a black-freaking-hole of food selection beyond fast food joints. I quickly scrambled to my Yelp app and said "Thai!??!" and he agreed. When we pulled up to this tiny spot he gave me a suspicious "Are you kidding me?" glance. I prayed to the Yelp gods I hadn't been lead astray. I know I've said this before, but decor means dip and shit to me when the food is good. I'll get back to that in a bit. We walk in, are greeted and seated pretty quickly. The menu is no-frills with hand-crossed out items and hand-written addendums. Kind of endearing, really. The first time I went with my safety item - Chicken Pad Thai. It came out quick and it came out GOOD. Not greasy, full of flavor and meat. A fabulous portion size - perfect for "being a fatty" lunch or a "two meal sally" lunch and dinner. It was immediately added to our "lunch list". I went with the Pad Thai twice more and then was finally lured into a Thai dish I'd never tried or even heard of - Evil Jungle. I was only tempted because of the reviews but I couldn't resist. It's a special curry sauce (peanut sauce based for sho') with bamboo, basil, broccoli and meat of your choice. Can I get a "wowwwwww"? Cause it was just that good. I love me some peanut sauce and this was basically a curry light with peanut sauce with a kick - and tender bamboo which I LOVE. I recommend getting this to go with a side of rice for a two-fer meal. Back to the restaurant itself, it's a converted house with no frills, weird seating and such. However I could care less with the caliber of food, and the awesomeness of th service. It's unobtrusive but polite and quick. They clearly have regulars they're happy to chit chat with as well. We just landed at PDX for a mini vacation up here and decided to yelp something thai and nearby. Chai Thai came up. As we were hurtling down the road at a blazing 23 miles per hour with the GPS lady yelling TURN LEFT, TURN LEFT,we flew by the place so quick that I though i was going to break my neck as I watched it whizz by. IT IS THAT SMALL. Now I'm generally not one to brag about my physical superiority as I'm 6'5 and 215lbs but I walked into this place and felt like a FREAK. I mean seriously, this place is like grown ups bangin in the back seat of the Volkswagen kinda small. Once we realized small equates to cute in this scenario we sat down and were greeted by Pol and his lovely wife. It's a small family run place and you immediately get this super cool, homey, family welcome home stranger feel. So the food. Ah yes... So it's MF'in good. They seem to use the Thai scale of spicy which means medium is going to blow your face off and hurt once you flush the output queue. Flavors are complex and authentic. IF I had to nitpick about something it's that the food tends to be on the sweeter side which I like but some palettes will not. Food adventures. One of my favorite things to do. Not a crazy adventure. Only 100 blocks from where we currently live, but still a part of town we don't normally go to. Some friends told us about Chai Thai. Glad to have these friends. Chai Thai is very small. Probably room for about 20 at tables and another 5-10 at the counter. We found a seat right by the front door at the counter. It was amazing how many times I had to get up from my seat to shut the front door as nobody knew how to properly close it. Don't know why you needed to know that, but I like to share. The kitchen was tiny. Just barely enough for 2 people to be back there cooking. The woman behind the counter was very friendly. She seemed to know a good amount of the people that were coming in or leaving. That is a good sign of a good neighborhood establishment that people keep coming back to. We started our meal with shrimp rolls ($8) which were good if not spectacular. Six come in an order with some sweet and sour dipping sauce. For my main I hope I had the Evil Jungle. It has been a few weeks. Looking at the picture I took seems to match up with the description. Thai special curry sauce dispensed onto rice noodles with bell peppers, bamboo shoots and basil. You get a choice of meats (or tofu) and I chose chicken. I like spicy, but decided to keep it on the milder side to make sure it wasn't overpowering on my first visit here. I am 41 and this was my first time complaining to a manager. I told her there were only FOUR small shrimp in my whole $18 soup. She was the owner, and blamed inflation, then told me to go to Little Caesars or Red Robin instead next time. That felt less insulting than charging me $3 extra to switch to shrimp, when they purposely only put FOUR in anyway. The soup was too sweet, and the small side of rice was $5 when I could make 90 for that, so I won't be back, but maybe get chicken in yours folks! read more

The best Thai food I've had in Portland. Seriously. We started with the golden Triangles=so much flavor and perfect crisp texture with a soft savory center. Then we ordered Thai fried rice with shrimp, Evil Jungle with Shrimp, Pad Thai with Chicken and Pad Kee Mao with Pork. Everything had its own unique flavor. Then chill out on the location, size of the place or fancy decor - this place has authentic food at lower than usual prices. They make it the best at Chai Thai and tops the ones even in downtown Portland. Only thing is the small space in restaurant, wish they would expand. Then again to-going orders is quite fast too. Food seems good. Came here for some Togo food and having soup here. The lady in the front seems really rude. She keeps interrupting questions during ordering, drops off the soup and runs off without cups and later when asked for a couple of bowls, runs away without looking and sort of drops two bowls on the table without looking and goes away.
