    the entrance to sitzmark
    Wendy C.

With the best will in the world, i can only give a generous 3 stars. Anyway, so my review. My favourite things about Sitzmark are the view out the windows, and the gorgeous artistic ceiling. The food is average at best. So thats a star for the view, a star for the nice crispy fries, a star for the service. I was out of breath by the time i climbed the hill up from the parking lot, and then up the flight of stairs, and then there was no host at the stand, which was annoying so we just seated ourselves. This place is not for the old, fat and unfit, which is me. It's a while since i was in, back when i was skinny and could bound up the stairs. (It's actually Tuesday and they are marked as closed on Yelp. Hours need updated) MY crispy spicy chicken wrap was nothing to write home about - only ok, and i certainly couldn't give a good comment about the quality of the chicken, as it was somewhat difficult to locate. Husbands fish and chips - that batter was awful. Very greasy. I come from England, and between eating a ton of Indian food, and fish and chips, i am qualified to say this batter is some of the worst I've ever tasted, the reason being that the oil wasn't hot enough, and caused the batter to absorb a hefty quantity of the grease. Most unpleasant. We weren't given napkins by the person who brought the food (Who was not the server taking our order) and they had no tartare sauce left. Our server came by, noticed we didn't have napkins, and he got some for us. I think this place's target market is the skiers and snowboarders who you can see outside, locals who drink at the bar, and maybe tourists who take pictures of the ceiling. It's certainly not my type of place. I go to places for the food quality, and this just doesn't have it. Sorry i couldn't leave a more complimentary review

I was really disappointed with the food here. Setting is awesome. Service was pretty decent, but the menu just fell flat. The only saving grace was the cold draft local beer and the view of the mountain! Definitely overpriced for what you get.

2.75 stars. It's difficult to rate the Sitzmark. On one hand the artistic kaleidoscope-like interior ceiling is cool to sit under and the view of the mountain is gorgeous. They're offering a pretty good selection of drinks for your apres. Also, my server was also the bartender and I thought he was great, efficient. But the other hand... draft beers are hit and miss as far as coldness. The empty tabletop I sat at in the bar area was dirty and sticky. The general cleanliness of the place was mediocre. I saw flies inside the restaurant. The food I tried was not delicious. I ordered "KFC - Korean Fried Cauliflower". The pieces of cauliflower where much too big for bite-size. I had to cut them in thirds to eat them. The cauliflower was a little too firm, and the tempura coating left a odd chalky taste in my mouth. I liked the flavor of the brown sauce on the outside, but that's the only good thing. The menu describes the KFC having "candied sesame seeds and chives" but the sesame seeds used to garnish this were plain, as you can see in my close-up photo. They also used green onion, not a delicate tender chive. It's arguably a small inconsistency, but if that is what you put on the menu, it is what you should serve. Cheese Curds were crunchy and tasty. It could've used a pinch of salt and/or pepper. The marinara was served warm, and tasted fresh. But the plastic cups of Heinz ranch tasted awful. This dish shouldn't have costed over $10. I will say the food came out fast. It was just not that remarkable. Conclusion: Perfect spot for a just-off-the-slopes apres beer on the deck in the fresh air. If you get hungry and are wanting something impressive to eat, avoid this food and walk down the block to Jack Sprat.

The Place To Take a Break!

Sitting at the base of Chair 3 it's the Bar & Grill that feeds your need for liquid courage and eats to keep you skiing or boarding! Not to mention it's loud because it's exciting and happening! Live bands here too! Last time we saw two ladies from Down Under a week back! Cool and Snow Hipster! Everyone rocks the new clothes, like Patagonia, North Face, Smith, Oakley everyone's in their snow bunny suits. Lots of people walking funky in their snow boots. This place you see folks you know all the time. Co-workers, friends, family and everyone is having a brew, cocktail, good bar grub like wings and grilled chicken nachos. They have local brews, that we gravitate to and Classic PBR on tap by the pitcher for your group if you roll that way. If you ski here, you rest here to get your 2nd or 3rd wind. Full bar, lots of tables, booths, TV's with sports on them and when it's night the painted ceiling from a local artist is lit up with black lights and the different colored paints glow psychedelic. It's the spot. I couldn't imagine Alyeska Resort without the Sitz!

Great spot on the mountain to stop in and warm up! The Christmas mugs all year long make it that much better. It's got a great mountain vibe and the food is great! The staff is super friendly.

What a neat place! We had a great experience both times we went here. The bartenders were very attentive, polite, and took great care of us. They had a wonderful selection of beers and liquors. It is simply a fun place, with a great vibe, and a gorgeous ceiling (I'd stop just to look at that). Grab a glass of the Alyeska Brewski while you are there and make it a memorable trip. Good times for sure!

Rustic bar at base of the ski slope. Very quirky and menu is bar food. But they made a nightly taco special which was great. And cocktail was fun.

Just stopped in for a quick appetizer while we waited for Jack Sprat. The Kfc Korean Fried Cauliflower app was big enough to share between two people and it was pretty dang good.

Sitzmark is an Alyeska tradition and the go to place to grab food when skiing here. They have typical diner food and a great alcohol selection including some warm spiked beverages! The food is delicious, though almost anything warm tastes great when out in the snow, and the service is in the usual Alaskan friendliness. The only downside is that it get super crowded during meals and it's a seat yourself restaurant so you have to wait around and stalk someone to get a seat.

Due to the crush of guests, we couldn't get a table so we opted for take-out. We took a chance on the Bibimap (sp?). It was an appropriate dish for an at home meal, but without the heated bowl it comes in. On the way back from Homer we stopped again in Girdwood, this time with a reservation! Our server seated us in the romantic Garden Room", which we always opt for. This garden room is cozy, beautiful and the guests seated there have always been friendly and interesting. We all seem to treat that room like the proverbial "family" room! We started of with a tasting of a wine we wern't familiar with, and which I still can't remember its name! Our server (Blanca) was a true four star waitress. Intelligent, friendly, observant of our needs, and even those that we didn't know we needed! She took the time, even though the restaurant was packed, to clarify the menu, listen to our bragging about our 59th anniversary. She made the whole evening more joyful that we had even hoped it would be. We ordered the Filet Mignon, as per her Recommendation, and topped it with a bottle of Silver Oak. The meat, Blanca explained to us, was from a specific farm in the US. We've eaten lots of filets in lots of restaurants, but this one was right at the top of the heap. At our age this is "dangerous" as we could opt more often for the beef, than the healthier foods Jack Sprat has to offer. Dessert was the "simple" chocolate mouse. Yep, lieke everything else we ordered that night, it was an excellent topper off. We've had several meals over the years at Jack Sprats. We think, like the Silver Oak, they are getting better with age. Yep, we'lll be back, Jack!

If food alone was what I'm rating, this place would be a 3 or 4. I, myself, ordered the French toast breakfast with poached eggs and bacon. The food was fitting and definitely delicious. Price is a little iffy for the amount given, but the quality of the food was amazing. My family liked their food as well. However, removing the food aspect from the equation, the service was a bit off putting. From a simple glance around the room, there was a CLEAR difference how our table was treated in contrast to other tables from the way we were spoken to, checked on, and assisted, and I am sad to say it was not in a good way. I hope that this is a one time thing where the woman who assisted us was having a bad day, but with her showing kindness to other tables, but appearing as if we were a drag to assist throughout the whole meal, it's quite a disheartening feeling. I may try out this place again (maybe not for breakfast) but at the time being, this place is not somewhere I'd recommend.

I started with the scallop bisque, which had just the right amount of spice and tasted great. For the second course, I had the quail agnolotti, but it was my least favorite. Spectacular scenery is everywhere, so don't expect the view alone to justify the cost. Our dinner was one of the biggest disappointments of our entire trip. We were celebrating our friends' 30th wedding anniversary, making the evening especially meaningful. Our bill was over $1,700 for our group, and not one person at our table said they even liked their meal. Several dishes were barely edible. My scallop soup contained one scallop that was not fully cooked and a tiny piece of cracker. The gazpacho was overwhelmingly spicy. The beet salad was served over scattered drops of horseradish that weren't even applied consistently from one plate to another, making the dish feel careless and unbalanced. The main courses were average at best. Some people didn't even finish their filet mignon, which should be one of the easiest dishes for a restaurant of this caliber to get right. The desserts were just as disappointing. No one finished theirs, and no one had anything positive to say about them. The service was equally unacceptable. Before dinner even began, one of our friends quietly asked the waiter if he could please bring a candle with the anniversary dessert to help celebrate the couple's 30th wedding anniversary. It was the very first request made after we were seated, yet it was completely overlooked. The desserts arrived with no candle, no acknowledgment of the occasion, and no apology. It may seem like a small detail, but it reflected the lack of attentiveness we experienced throughout the evening. Our waiter repeatedly reached across guests instead of serving properly, refused to clear plates himself because he wanted the bus staff to do it, and the overall service felt slow, awkward, and very unprofessional. Even though the restaurant wasn't busy, every part of the meal seemed to take far longer than it should have. What really confirmed that it wasn't just us was talking to the family seated next to us--a group of 14--who felt exactly the same way about both the food and the service. I consider myself a true foodie. I love trying new restaurants and cuisines, and I'm far from being a picky eater. I almost never write negative reviews, but this experience was simply unacceptable. I had heard this restaurant was a "must-do" while visiting the area, which made the experience even more disappointing. In my opinion, it's simply not worth the money. I wouldn't even recommend paying to ride the tram just to dine here, because you'll find breathtaking scenery all over Alaska without spending hundreds of dollars on a meal that falls far short of expectations. I sincerely hope this review helps other travelers avoid making the same very expensive mistake we did.
