It's okay. It's more of a to go, hence "express" in its name. They have tables outside if you cant wait to eat your food. Very relaxed and casual. We ordered idly, they are minis! If you are not Indian and wondering what it tastes like, if you have had puto, yes i said it, a Filipino snack make of rice flour, that's how it tastes like except idly will have the Indian twist, it's coated with chili and lentil. They were spicy, but then again, as I have grown older, my tolerance to spicy food had gone down tremendously. And if you have not had the Filipino puto, then think of mochi but more fluffy and airy. we also ordered dosa which came with a soup, and chutney, coconut and tomato. The soup was ok, very liquid compared to a soup where you blended some of the ingredients, the soup becomes creamy. The dosa itself is good. it was odd though as Im used to seeing a burrito like dosa, this was more like flattened and cut into pies. We also ordered something that looks like a Korean pancake, I forgot the name. That was good too. For something fast, this will do. Lots of parking!

Stopped by for a quick bite for breakfast and got the Idli 2 Vada combo with sambar, coconut chutney, and tomato chutney. The idli was one of the best I've had at an Indian restaurant! Sambar and coconut chutney were also amazing, but the tomato chutney was too sweet. They were super generous with the portions for chutneys and sambar. I also tried the vegan masala chai, it had good flavor but was pricey for the portion. Service was quick and staff were really friendly. It's takeout only. Parking is easy. Definitely plan to come back and try more of the menu.

I was craving for some traditional authentic filter coffee and after a quick Yelp search, I found this place. Surprisingly it was open at 8am! I got a medium filter coffee, a vada and benne masala dosa. I just couldn't wait to dig in. The person at the counter was very kind. The seating here was limited but they did have good indoor and outdoor seating. The coffee came out pretty quickly! It tasted just like the traditional Indian filter coffee - absolutely delicious! The dosa and vada came out pretty quickly too. The dosa was dripping with ghee - just the way I like it. It came with tomato and coconut chutney. There was authentic sambar too. Everything tasted delicious! My cravings were satisfied! If you are looking for authentic South Indian food , look no further!

Take out only! I suggest ordering pickup because it takes a while for the food to come out. Especially since there is no seating area inside. Vegan chai is made with oat milk

Mini Idly - Dipped (14 pcs) Dosa Uttapam
    Jayesh Satish N.

Idly Express is a solid stop when you want quick South Indian food that actually tastes good. If you love dosa and onion uttapam, you'll be happy here. I came on a Sunday brunch run and the dosa + onion uttapam combo was exactly what I needed. Food: really tasty and consistent. Drinks: rose milk and coffee are my favorites. Service/Parking: staff is helpful and parking is easy. Big downside: the location basically doesn't have seating. There are a few tables outside but it's not comfortable, and during peak times you'll likely end up eating in your car or taking it to go. One more thing: it looks like they might be connected to Mylapore since the containers and branding seem the same. If seating matters to you, I'd just go to Mylapore. If you're okay with takeout, Idly Express is great.

Tomato chutney - with carrots and made in coconut oil
    Me Iz S.

This location of Idly express is more of a takeout than a sit down, hence the ambience is very functional!! Nothing too much to talk about ...there are a couple of tables outside, no seating inside! The service appears to be fast. There is an electronic stand - to place your order and check out. There is a cashier - where you pay, and then there is a booth (more like a pick up table), the host signals that your order is ready for pick up! I have only eaten here once - last week I picked up a takeout. I ordered the Tathe Idly. You get two big idlis in a box. The order has small inner containers of sambar, a podi with oil, tomato chutney and coconut chutney. I requested them to skip the coconut chutney due to food, allergies (coconut is a no-no for me!!) They gave me four teeny/small containers of tomato chutney! This is where my experienced went South rapidly!! I don't think the tomato chutney is made of only tomato; when you keep it in the fridge and take it out, it solidifies and there is some sticky-creamy texture and it feels a bit chewy. I'm not sure what the other ingredient in the tomato is, I have to get to the bottom of it. This triggered immediate wheezing and a weird distaste for me!!! Stay tuned cause I'm going to call them and fill this space with ingredients within the tomato chutney. If you were to order food and eat, please - please - please be sure to ask about every ingredient, especially if you have asthma coupled with wheezing and a sensitive system! Follow up: I just got off the phone. The young lady who answered was very polite and checked with the chef about the ingredients!! Bang on, I was correct : the reason it's solid solidifies and the chutney looks creamy is because they use coconut oil !! Top that they add carrot in it! Be very mindful if you're eating that chutney!

Mini tiffin ( vip + rava kesari)
    Sho R.

I got an Uber delivery of Mini tiffin ( vip + rava kesari). They had a lot of delicious items like dosa and poori. But only idly was available through Uber. Food was ready quickly. Medhu vada was crispy and flavorful. Sambar, coconut chutney and tomato chutney all came in good quantity. Pongal was good. Kesari had a lot of ghee.

A picture from october last year- Thatte idlis.

I'm a fan of their thatte idlis, but my recent DoorDash order was disappointing. The extra coconut chutney I ordered was missing, and they also never packed two tomato chutneys with two different orders of thatte idlis. I've noticed they've reduced the combo by one thatte idli and lowered the price on their website, but DoorDash still charges more ($7.95 vs $9.54). I understand restaurants pay a fee to DoorDash, but customers shouldn't bear the cost. On the bright side, their coconut chutney is delicious, and their sambhar is exceptional - soothing, homely, and perfectly spiced with added bottle gourd. I hope they address the inconsistencies and pricing issues. I look forward to dining in the restaurant and tasting their other offerings.

Comfort soul food! When you're overwhelmed with endless Indian options, this place offers clean, guilt-free, and wallet-friendly meals without compromising on quality or quantity. The $5 specials are incredible--Adai Avial, Kanjivaram Idlis, and Poori Masal are our top picks. The attention to detail in a $5 meal is impressive, like the butter and jaggery on the side for Adai. Their batters are unmatched in town, especially the sponginess of the idlis. Opportunities: * Tiffin: The regular tomato chutney is just okay but could be better (though the one served with Kanjivaram Idlis is amazing). * Hot Lunch: Their poriyals, like vazhakkai and potato, are consistently undercooked, and the taste could use some improvement.

No lines and no crowds on a rainy day morning with plenty of available parking spots in the huge lot. Nothing attractive on the outside in this old popular plaza. The place turned out great with the old fashioned retro red color style interior and the experience was wonderful. Good vibes and positive feelings when walking into it. My lady server provided excellent service and the Hispanic male worker was quick and efficient. Place is clean and menu had good variety of selections. Breakfast is served all day while lunch items start at 11am. My breakfast was very fulfilling and total was $25.30 with everything included. I paid in cash and tipped them $5. Loved my sweet lady server. There was another older woman at the cash register. She's a local as well. I really enjoyed the stop. I had the Fajitas Omelette breakfast and the steak meats in it were very generous. Delicious breakfast exactly as I had expected. My onions green peppers potatoes were perfect with a side of salsa. Sourdough toast was delicious with the garlic butter taste. I really came for my favorite hot chocolate with whipped cream in the morning. I do miss big American breakfasts, especially in these old fashioned and traditional retro spots. Love it. Why didn't I visit this place much earlier? Because they're always busy or full inside and the plaza parking is usually congested with heavy traffic here. Overall, I love the vibes and the service. We ordered the strawberry matcha and banana matcha, and the drinks are a great bang for your buck considering how large they are--my husband and I honestly could've shared one. The strawberry matcha had a pleasant, jammy fruit flavor that paired nicely with the matcha. I was especially impressed by the banana matcha, which is made with fresh bananas. You could really taste the difference, and thankfully, it didn't have that artificial banana flavor at all. The matcha itself is fairly standard in terms of quality, so I think their flavored drinks are where this place really shines. It started with the barbacoa chilaquiles. When I saw that that the chilaquiles in the menu had habaneros on it, I knew I had found my place. I often cook at home with ghost and scorpion peppers, which are not traditionally found in restaurants, but they've done some pretty amazing improvisation when I've asked to make it work. One time, I recall getting the chilaquiles and asking for extra habaneros and asking if their chef had a secret hot sauce that was stronger than "white people spicy." Miriam brought me a little ramekin of a pepper sauce puree that the chef prepared - and it was EPIC. I don't ask for that every time, but you know whoever was on the line took the request seriously and actually had some fun making my mouth burn. I can't tell you how appreciative I am of their willingness to "play" in the kitchen. Today, I went for breakfast and ordered the Carne En Su Jugo for my first time. Not just here - first time ever eating it anywhere. I had totally forgotten to ask them to make it spicy! I asked Miriam if there was anything they could do to spice it up. She assured me they could. Then I received it. And I tasted it. And it was cathartic. The chefs prepared a PERFECTLY spicy stew, and I downed that whole thing in 7 minutes. It was delicious, put some sweat on my brow, and left me feeling more than satisfied with my meal. I love this place! Miriam is always great every time I've been there. They were wrapped with the wrapping paper that didn't securely hold the entire sandwich/burrito securely. Especially for the sandwich, the cheese and meat were easily spilling out from the sides. The burrito was standard, but I felt the same way more or less regarding its structure. Additionally, the flavor was ok and good at best. The meal came with red salsas, which look to be house made since it was clear there is pickled onions and some other little things in it. Honestly it is an ok salsa, I'm not sure if this particular flavor is what I'm looking for to complement a breakfast burrito normally. We had an OK experience. The restaurant seems like a fairly small shop (run by family)! While I'm all for supporting local and mom/pop shops, I probably would not wait over 15 minutes for it. Arrived this morning around 11am and line was long out the door. Most of the pastries were out at…read morethis time, i would come closer to 12pm for the pastry refresh. They still had the croissant cube i like and tried the matcha croissant to try something new. Also ordered off their hot brunch menu, the smoked salmon avocado toast w side salad and the burrata avocado toast but partner doesnt like cheese so ordered without it, comes with side salad. Also ordered an Americano and a Banana cream latte with almond milk. Thankfully there were plenty of seating as the first half morning rush already left, but by 12pm seating became sparse. The matcha croissant outside is white chocolate with matcha powder i believe, very sweet, not a huge fan of white chocolate. Inside there is chocolate which is nice, it's a nice crossiant tho and the signs say they use french butter and chocolate. The crossiant cube was delicious as always. The coffee was okay,,, the banana cream latte is better after all the cream as mixed into the espresso. I enjoyed my smoked salmon avocado toast, they give u plenty of smoked salmon and salad, the huge tomatoes on the burrato avocado toast is very tasty, they sprinkles olive oil and pepper on top i believe. Overall pretty nice brunch everything was just under $80 which is a bit steep for brunch but this place really has the most variety pastries in one place and tho coffee isn't the best but at least they have the option as well.
