Made an appointment to drop my car off at 8 am. Around 2:30 I called to check on the car and they told me it was still in the bay and should be ready by 4:30. I showed up around 4:30 to pick up the car, which wasn't ready and took another half our to get out of there between paying and them "bringing the car around." The two ladies at the front should not be working in any type of customer service. One has no idea what's going on and the other is the rudest person I have ever met. If I was getting anything more than an oil change I can't imagine how this would have gone. Next time I will definitely just go somewhere else, there are way too many other places that won't charge over $100 and take 9 hrs to do this. read more

At one time they only worked on American cars, but now they work on SOME foreign cars. This is a family run shop, a man named Dave is the owner. He will NEVER overcharge you. He is ALWAYS up front about what work needs to be done. Sometimes it can be hard to get your car in on a timely manner b/c Dave is just so busy/popular because he is an HONEST and RELIABLE mechanic. How can I give this place negative review so that less people will go (thus shortening my wait to get service)? It's almost like a fake review when I say there even the concept of honest mechanic. I mean, look at it, typically they rank up there right along side used car salesmen and lawyers. The concept of not getting screwed from the behind is too foreign in this business, but this place is different. But you have to endure with their lack of words. Yes they have no patience to explain you anything. They will not call back. They have no problem making you look like an idiot if you ask them stupid questions. They do not have free shuttles. They open late and close early. Their phone number can hardly ever goes through (and you must call ahead to make appointment 2 weeks ahead!). BUT, they are super honest. It's like the feeling you get when you drop your kid / pet to a day care, and know without a doubt they'll be safe and sound when they are back in your arms. They will not charge you more than it takes. They don't look at books for charging labor -- they charge you the actual time it took them, and being super experienced mechanics, things doesn't take very long to get done. And more often than not, they will end up charging you less than they quote you. I don't know what else can I say to describe my experience better, but I know for sure they're the only one I'd ever trust. read more

There are three types of people in this world: 1) Those who don't know anything about cars and pay someone to work on theirs 2) Those who know things about cars and refuse to pay anyone else to do it 3) Those who know things about cars but are lazy and prefer paying someone else I fall into #3. As such, I have a general understanding of what certain problems require/cost and I also tend to be distrusting of mechanics. I've patronized places all over the area and found that I usually object to cost required to complete a job, pushy upsales or just plain crappy customer service. Not only has my experience at DAS bucked those trends, it also feels like I'm back in my Grandfather's garage when I walk in. Honesty AND nostalgia in the same place? Sign up me! I had a good experience here. In the time of Covid, their waiting room is closed and I have just called the day of or the day before I want something fixed and drop off my car, get called with an estimate and then come to pick up the car when they say it's ready. They have not tried to upsell me. I thought my brakes needed to get done, and they said nope, they're fine. Their lot is always pretty full and it looks like they have a lot of business but enough to get things fixed quickly. Pretty no nonsense and to the point. Before Covid, it looks like it might have been an okay place to hang out with kids since they have toys in their waiting room. The bad thing is they close early on Fridays and are not open on the weekends. read more

Amazing work, amazing service. I've got an older Jeep Grand Cherokee and the heat recently stopped working. I had taken it to a local shop where I get my oil changed frequently and was charged 60 bucks for a full search of my Jeep that came back with an additional $800 worth of charges that I hadn't inquired about and didn't care to get fixed in the first place. This shop said that it'd cost at LEAST $1,200 dollars to take the entire front dash off and replace the heating core. Not excited to pay at least $1,200 for a car that's worth less than $5,000, I took my Jeep to Dranesville Auto Service for a second opinion. Long story short, they came back with a different story and I got the problem fixed for $675. They're quick and communicate well. I had my car out to them for about 36 hours. I'd driven past this place for YEARS and never thought twice to check it out but I'm glad I did. Heads up, they are VERY busy. If you think you can waltz in there and get your car taken care of that day, you'll be wrong. I had to make an appointment for three weeks in advance. read more

18 years ago, while at a neighbors BBQ, the subject of auto service came up. I had been a die hard dealer only guy... until then. One of our neighbors proudly announced that once he left the dealers lot the only service center to EVER touch his cars were Drainesville Auto Service. I asked why... He said "Because they are honest to a fault, do excellent work, will tell you if the job is beyond them and charge a very fair price. Oh and they never sell you something you don't need." Obviously, we tried them immediately. And, for the past 18 years, Drainesville Auto is the only auto service center to touch our cars... all 5 of them. Except for tires which they don't sell. Though, if you buy them at Costco they will mount and balance them. I can't tell you how many times a tire store has told me I need a brake job, or front end work or alignment..only to bring it to Drainesville and be told... Brakes need a minor adjustment you have 4,000 miles left on the pads and the rotors are fine... or We checked your front end and its fine or, alignment is off a touch but not enough to cause serious tire wear... we'll do it at the next regular service interval. We have saved thousands of dollars over the past 18 years and always felt our cars were in top notch condition. Others have mentioned the wait to get an appointment. However, while that is true for normal maintenance if you can predict when your car will need its next service they will book you well in advance. If you have a critical need I have found them to be very responsive. These folks are professional mechanics, not motivational speakers. But, ask yourself, do I want a blinding competent mechanic working on my cars or a guy who could talk the ears off an elephant... bet you can guess my answer. read more

Now I never bother w second opinions because I know theirs will be the most honest and fair. You won't get a fancy waiting area or any bells and whistles. I've taken my vehicle here on a number of occasions in the past with no issue. However, I visited in August 2017 for a routine inspection and suspicion that a rear brake pad was rubbing. The inspection was performed and both rear pads and rotors were replaced. Two weeks later, I can tell the pad was rubbing again. I took the car back in and the pads and rotors were replaced again under warranty at no additional charge. Another couple weeks pass, and again the pad is rubbing. I chose another service center this time as I was dissatisfied that Dranesville couldn't get it right on 2 occasions. The issue was diagnosed as a faulty caliper. All in all, another rotor, pad and $500 more to fix what should have been done on the first or second chance. Dranesville came highly recommended by a family member, needless to say, neither of us will return. read more

Good prices and seem very honest but the woman I was working with in the front office was uninterested in answering any of my questions/rude on several occasions. My interaction with her ended with her handing me my keys and me asking her where my car was (this is a pretty large place) and her being very annoyed at me even asking as if this was a strange question. I was hoping to give this shop 5 stars, as it is independently-owned and has garnered praise all across this board. However, my vehicle was in worse condition AFTER the work performed than before. I have no idea how this happens, unless the tech was new or incompetent. Unlike a restaurant where a second chance can come at only a few dollars, I am afraid I cannot chance wasting another few hundred dollars here. On the plus side, the cost for service here is lower than any other shop I called. If the work had been performed in a non-incompetent manner, it would have been the sweetest deal in town. read more

They do now service all American and Japanese models - I think they do more limited work on some German models too. Service is top notch and the prices can't be beat. A great, locally owner car mechanic! After years of hauling to Chantilly to go to the dealer, I now drive/walk 2 1/2 miles to this local shop. I don't get free beverages, plush chairs and donuts while I'm waiting but the prices and personalized service are far superior to the dealer. Short: Their prices are excellent. The quality of their work varies widely Long turn around time 6 month warranty on repairs Long: Their hourly labor price is pretty fair. They give you a 6 month warranty on parts and labor. Professionalism: not so much. Last time I got my car back, it had greasy handprints on the paint and interior of the vehicle. They also left my check engine light turned on, which was not on when I left it off. I have been having a lot of problems since they replaced my clutch. My shift linkage comes loose about every 2 weeks. They seemed to do pretty poor job on this one repair, but in the past they have been much, much better. read more

We were customers for years until 2017 when we received less than top notch service. The owner is in retirement and they are apparently going through an adjustment? Repairs were not completed as expected, and we had to go back. Something was damaged while it was there, and their response was not as I would have expected... Things wear out, and even if something broke while it was at the shop I would have expected that I would have to pay for it, unless it was outright negligence. What I did not expect total denial of any responsibility or a reasonable explanation on their part. In the past, management would have handled this situation much better. read more

My family has been using Dranesville Auto for years. My car recently failed inspection for brakes so I took it somewhere near our home (in Leesburg) for a quote. They told me it would be $1400 to replace all four pads and rotors. I knew this was a total rip off so I made the trek out to Dranesville Auto who did the work for almost a third of the cost. Great shop! Not always easy to get an appointment but after using their services you kind of realize why. Brought my wife's car here to get her brakes looked at cause I wasn't interested in paying the 300+ dollar dealer rate and getting a call midway though the day telling me I should consider fixing 9 other things that having nothing to do with the reason for the original appointment. The looked at the brakes and called me as soon as they did to keep me informed. They told me exactly what they needed to do and how long it would take. I was not able to get to the shop before closing so they allowed me to pay over the phone and set up a way for me to get the car back.. Now about pricing! Welllll, the 300+ I refused to spend somehow rocketed way down to just under $130 and included!!! the safety and emissions inspection needed to get the car registered.. Couldn't be happier! My other car up in NJ that I need repaired will definitely be put in their care when I get it down here. read more

I only take a my cars to a mechanic only because I can not fix it myself. Dranesville Auto Service is the Mechanics mechanic. My last issue was with an alignment on the rear of my vehicle. The first well known garage acknowledged that I had a problem in the rear alignment and they could not solve the problem. Dransesville Auto Service got my business and completed the job in 48 hours. This was not an easy job. It needed shims and it needed special tools to complete the job. read more

I just had my AC clutch repaired and the job was significantly cheaper than what I found elsewhere. My only issue is it usually takes at least 2 weeks to get in because they are so busy.
