Got the masala chai latte with a shot of espresso and macadamia milk (so rare to see a cafe selling this!!) it was the BEST I've ever had. The spices were pronounced which was what I like, not that powdered stuff at other cafes. The next day i got the mocha. Soooo good, just a bit too sweet for me though. Multiple times we have ordered and paid for our donuts, waited in line for a long time watching people receive their donuts who ordered after us, come to find out by asking where our donuts are after 10+ minutes, they then let us know they are out of those flavors. How hard is it to let the cashiers know what you are out when you are out of them, and serve your customers in order in which the order is placed. Paid for donuts we didn't receive. I've been here about a dozen times since my initial review and they're still great! On any given day they have about a dozen and a half different donuts and flavors rotate regularly. I'm not sure what they're doing for drip coffee but even that is great. Staff has been consistently friendly and always seem to actually enjoy their jobs, a refreshing take on casual breakfast. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. Changing Tides has quickly become my favorite place for coffee in Newburyport. Their coffees are always delicious, and they have a nice variety of coffee and other beverages. I often get decaf when I go there, and good decaf can be hard to find, but at this place, it is always delicious! One time when I came by late morning and was going to get just a decaf brewed coffee instead of a made to order espresso drink, the person behind the counter saw that the brewed decaf had been sitting awhile and offered to make a fresh pour over for me if I had the time, and also immediately started a fresh decaf brew so the NEXT person wouldn't get old coffee. Their donuts are absolutely wonderful. Fresh, old fashioned hand made donuts. I like that they have plenty that aren't overdone with stuff, so you can still taste the donut and not just a sugar bomb. The folks ringing you up are careful... if you picked a donut that's frosted, they'll offer to put in in a separate bag so the frosting doesn't get on the other stuff. I've seen them make cute little mini donuts for special orders and I wish they had those for sale on weekends too, because sometimes I just can't decide which flavor to get and would happily buy 3 minis instead of one regular donut :) The seating area isn't huge, it's small but comfortable. But on nice days there is an expansive patio out back. read more

I found the Changing Tides by accident on a recent Sunday afternoon. I just happened to park in front of it, and my partner and I just happened to be in the mood for a cup of coffee. It was our lucky day to find this little gem. Upon entering we were hit by that heart-warming scent of fresh-baked goods and coffee. Then we were delighted at the donuts for sale...fresh, delectable and enticing. I had a blueberry muffin instead....so good! The coffee hit the spot. The staff was friendly, and one lady...perhaps the owner?... came over and talked with us. She and her staff do a great job and she takes pride in her establishment. Good food, good vibes, spotlessly clean. If I lived closer, I'd be in there three or four times a week, at least. Give it a try! read more

The service that i get at changing tides is unlike anything i've had before... first of all the food is amazing, especially the double chocolate muffin, but what really makes this place special is the people. I'm the type of person to go to the same place daily so i'm used to making friends with one of the workers since i usually order the same thing everytime. but this place is different. it started with the girls guessing my order. and then this one lady started remembering my name and setting a muffin aside for me. now when i walk in it doesn't matter what worker i see they all know my name. i called today and the girl working picked up the phone and said "hey emily".... Found a new favorite place in Newburyport - Changing Tides Cafe & Donut Shop: Great Costa Rican Coffee, Rita said it was the BEST Jelly Donut EVER, and my Mixed Berry Muffin was AMAZING. They have only been open about a year and as a new business they can use support - they also have healthy choices!
