I couldn't think of a more special place to celebrate Valentine's Day than at @mandarava_kitchen , a true vegan gem in the Northshore of charming Newburyport, MA. It was a very intimate experience dining among two other couples ( with three tables inside, Valentine's Day was fully booked! ) Here is what we enjoyed: - Roasted beet, radish, cucumber and snap peas crudites with a fava pate and malawach - Creamy and crispy potato puffs with spicy zchug - A bright and dreamy wedge salad with mushroom bacon and fried shallot - A savory tomato sunchoke soup with artichoke heart - A surprise ravioli and with a warming cream sauce - And choice of dessert, I had a bright lemon tart cake with and my husband had the amaro blonde sundae Dan @rhinokey, the @gossamerdram bar room operator, is a master with his cocktails, sourcing from, supporting local and small businesses where possible. This place is simply outstanding! I cannot think about a better dinning experience in Newburyport than the one my finance and I had at Mandarava. We went on a Friday for a tasting menu. This is what we got: - Grape leaves: Delicious stuffed grape leave paired with heart of palm and blood orange. Perfect way to start a delicious dinner. - Vegetable creme soup: I think that was one of the best soups I had in a while. It was super flavorful and light. The crispy brussel sprouts on the top provided some crispiness to the plate. - Chickpea tofu: The combination of the chickpea tofu with the delicata squash was just delightful. I wouldn't even know how to improve the plate if I was asked to... - Pot pie: Perfect bite for a winter. It makes you warm up immediately. The flavors were on point. You only need to be patient with this one, since it takes a while until it cools down and you can really enjoy it as it deserves. - Sweets: The description of this plate was only "cherry, blueberry, strawberry, pear" so we didn't really know what to expect. Well, we were served with a delicious piece of cake. Every bite made you come back for more. If I was asked about something to improve, my only recommendation would be to make sure the waitress describes the plate when served. At least the time we were there, that was not the case. I love this place. It is small but sparkling clean. The bowls of legumes, rice, and vegetables are so simple but so delicious. The bowl I ate was brown rice, kidney beans, and fresh spinach with a green cashew sauce. Together it was like a bowl of heaven. Most Indian restaurants serve very dressed up food with lots of butter and spices. This place is more akin to what most Indian (and all other South Asians) eat in their homes. I also got a ginger lemonade which was made right in front of me with pressed ginger and was simply perfect for me. I can order a half bowl for $7.40 and a small juice for $6 and be perfectly full. The food is simple and organic and perfect. Good for those who are gluten free. I noticed you can order food by the pint as well and will keep that in mind for busy weekdays night dinners. read more

We attended a private party at Mandarava and it was excellent! We had six course - each one packed full of flavor and creativity. The party was for a vegan couple. I am not vegan but I LOVED the food. They also had some amazing seasonal cocktails that were worth every calorie! I'm kind of ashamed that it took me so long to find out about this place! Today was my second visit to Mandarava; at my first, I got the rice bowls to go. My husband, who is not generally the "rice and beans" type, thought the food was delicious. I also brought home some of the homemade chocolate macaroons - OMG they are crazy good!! Today, a lovely and warm November day, we had our dog with us so I ordered inside and was going to get our food as "take out" but, instead, they brought us our lunch in regular porcelain bowls and we sat out front with our pup. The rice and beans with arugula were delicious! We each had a smoothie, which were also yummy. Mandarava is really just such a wonderful eatery! I believe it's owned and run by a mother-daughter team. All of the ingredients are incredibly fresh and everything is made with such meticulous attention to detail. Pineapple pear ginger is my fave but my boyfriend orders a different one I like as well. Yes it may be pricey but is well worth it! I'm grateful: in the past I've found it hard locating just a nice restaurant in Newburyport with merely one vegan dish on the menu. But my very carnivorous significant other loved this place! We had a garbanzo stew with Japanese yam and asparagus. "Exotic comfort food" my SO called it. Flavorful but subtle, filling, but not on account of any filler. Anthony Bourdain may have have caste shade on veganism, but he'd have approved a restaurant like this offering just three options, but doing them to perfection. At least while we were there the place had a staff of one, a perfectly lovely women and prepare and served our food, which came very fast, and even brought us some complementary herb tea (ginger, lemon, maple syrup) and cornbread. We each had a yummie cookie for dessert. The decor is simple but simultaneously elegant and homey, with the kitchen in the center of the eating space, the preparation for all to see. This was my first time going here and it was very disappointing to see only one meal option for the whole restaurant!! Then when it got served it was literally just beans, brown rice and about a half cup of lettuce for $8!! We all left hungry and felt like we have been scammed. Tomato cashew soup was rich and delicious! Careful, ginger peach iced tea is delicious and flavorful but more bitter than you might expect and not at all a fruity or sweet drink as the name suggests. I have eaten at mandarava at least twice and I have visited around 6-7 times. When I ate there I enjoyed the food very much as it aligns with my simplistic but healthy diet. Unfortunately due to my nut allergy, I have not been able to eat there since I had been in the fall. The first few times I felt they were accommodating to my allergy, but ever since they have not been. In fact they seem annoyed that I come in to ask if there is anything without nuts at all. For a restaurant that prides themselves on bringing joy to people's lives through healthy food, they should think more about the broader audience. Love love love this place! As a whole foods vegan that primarily eats organic it's hard to find a place like this that can meet my needs. Mandarava sure does the trick, I always get a fresh juice and their bowl of the day which is usually a combo of a grain, plant protein, and greens.
