We stumbled upon this place simply because we wanted to see what Plum Island was all about. Since my MIL's name was Martha, we thought we'd give it a try. SO GLAD WE DID! The vibe is laid back and relaxed. Food options were nicely varied and delicious. Service was attentive, friendly, and supportive when we couldn't decide on what to get. The place is eclectic and there's no shortage of unique things to look at. Great conversation with the two women behind the counter - learned a lot and shared some great stories amongst the four of us. I grew up in mass and have now lived in California for almost 20 years. I came back to visit and mad Martha's was a 10 minute walk from where I'm staying. Legit this was the absolute back home diner that I wanted. The food was absolutely amazing. I got a corned beef hash burrito bowl and ... I swear. Damn best thing I've eaten in years. To top it off. If you're in Newburyport, I highly recommend breakfast at Mad Martha's! Do note they have a weird schedule so definitely call ahead to ensure they're open. It's a small and adorable little breakfast shack located on scenic plum island. There is a bar with maybe 8 stools and 7 or so tables. You may have to wait a bit so be prepared!! The food is a 10/10 as always. What we got: - corned beef hash and eggs - homemade and delish!!! Must get. - carmelized banana French toast - will give your sweet tooth a run for it's money! - also their hash browns are out of this world. Definitely go here and enjoy an amazing breakfast! Absolutely superb. We ordered a veritable feast for a birthday breakfast and every dish delivered. The kids pancake is MASSIVE and my son ate it for two meals. The messy egg dish was fantastic. It's real food. Like, somebody cut up the fruit bowl and put it beautifully --not like the scoop of random fruit from a pre cut Costco Tupperware--like REAL fruit. The service was fantastic and Kendall was so friendly. We are visiting from out of town for the holiday but it's the kind of place that, if you lived here, they would know your name and order by heart. It's THAT friendly and that attentive. My friend and I made the trip up from Boston just to go to breakfast here. She told me that it tends to get crazy, so we left Boston around 6, to make sure we arrived close to 7. We found street parking across the street from the restaurant- albeit it did say 30 minute parking. I got the Cuban Omelette, which was delicious. It was really big, and I ended up taking some home. We were on our way from Boston to Portland and decided to stop at this unique brunch spot on the way. We had to wait about 30 minutes but the gal took our number and texted us when a table was ready so we were able to drive to the lighthouse while waiting. The vibe is so unique with the large kitchen behind the bar. It's like you're in someone's home and they are whipping up something delicious for you. My 7-year old enjoyed the bowl of candy on the counter while we waited for our food- hey, we are on vacation, so why not? She also took a picture of our attractive cook- what a gorgeous smile! We had the Portuguese French toast, shrimp burrito, BAT grilled cheese, Salmon Getaway, some bacon and home fries. It was all incredible!!! I stopped in one morning after working a long overnight shift--they made me the most unbelievable buttermilk pancakes and shecky burrito (was lunch for later ) I have ever had in my life, legit world changing stuff. I was too tired to hang out but the place had a great vibe and everyone seemed to be having the breakfast of their lives. The staff couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming to me--which says a lot because i probably resembled the walking dead after a 12 hour shift. This review is from a spontaneous visit from NC to MA during the summer of 2018. My Boston friends were like, "We have to come here! And get there before 8am!" So we sacrificed some sleep and on the way there my friends couldn't stop talking about how much of a gem Mad Martha's Cafe was like. The drive there was very cool. It was just nice, quiet, and scenic. When I arrived I was like, "Really?" This place is so cute and small. And the self-serve coffee outside was a nice touch. The proximity to the beach was really awesome. We took a short walk on the beach while waiting for our table. Decor: Warm and personable. Loved the cute tiny touches. We sat right in front of the kitchen with the lovely tiled counter. Service: The people were so nice. Being so close to the kitchen, it felt like we were having brunch at someone's house. My friends pointed to one of the owners who was cooking (Kyree or Kendall?) and she came by and talked to us for a small bit. Food: Dang, for a tiny place their menu is huge. And that doesn't include the list of specials written on the chalkboard. Man, that's crazy. For our party of 3 we shared 8 things: - Bacon sandwich thing that had avocado and smoked salmon. (Wonderful!) - Pancakes with coconut in the batter and sauce with pineapples in it. (Ugh, this was so good. I would order this again.) - Gluten-free pancakes with caramelized bananas on it. (Lovely pancakes.) - A breakfast burrito. (This was okay. It's basically a vegetarian breakfast burrito. Something salty like chopped sausage or bacon or country ham in the burrito would make me happier.) - Home fries (Hmmm...not very good. It feels like boiled potatoes, chopped, and then sauteed, but with no seasoning added. At least it's healthy!) - A side of crispy fried cheese. (Ugh...delicious. Daaaaaang this is awesome.) - A side of coconut rice. (Sure!) - "The Daily Special" (I don't think this thing even had a name. If I had to give it a name, I would call it, "The World's Largest Avocado Toast"or "Open-faced Frankensandwich" or "The Newbury Fury". It had avocado, onions, smoked salmon, tomatoes, bacon, jalapenos, poached eggs, a drizzle of a spicy mayo sauce, all on top of some thick bread. And it came with an additional side of coconut rice. I'm too speechless to rate this.) *********************** Conclusion: Awesome food. Wonderful area. Worth the visit from NC. Probably one thing I'd change is to have the coffee cups they have outside be stored faced down so stuff doesn't accidentally fly into them. I feel like Mad Martha's Cafe is the manifestation of people's romanticized ideas of breakfast. It's an intimate and personable place in the middle of nowhere where people can spend some time with loved ones, have great food, and not have to wash any dishes. Ventured here a few times while visiting the area in 2019. It's a quaint little eatery with friendly owners and waitstaff. It's a great spot to satisfy any diet, especially vegetarian and vegan. I had vegan breakfast burrito bowl and a tofu sandwich and both were pretty darn good. There will be a wait, but it's worth it and they have a coffee cart outside so you can get your fix while you wait. read more

it's been years since I've been there I don't think I would dare going in the pandemic, but the place was really disheveled and kitschy and I remember I was being taking out to breakfast by somebody who had no money that's my memories of Mad Marthas so I ended up having to buy them breakfast and the place is makeshift. It's been years but I didn't see Hazel going to town there.... It's kind of a hassle to find in a little out-of-the-way, but enjoy if that's the kind of place that turns you on. It's a nice place to stop for breakfast when you're on Plum Island. It's not my favorite breakfast place but that's only because I'm not a big breakfast food eater. It's a nice cozy place that definitely caters towards the locals which is fine by me (being a local myself) The food is nice - reminds me of a home cooked meal. The price is definitely fair. There is only one thing wrong with Mad Martha's, and that's that it wasn't open when I tried to go back for the third time in a row yesterday. For me, personally this is about as close to perfect as you can get when it comes to restaurants for breakfast. We are staying in an AirBnB just down the road (the purple house - 3 minute walk) so it is very conveniently located. Walking up the road, you can smell the food cooking and you can hear the laughter and conversation taking place inside where there are just a handful of tables, and outside where there are a couple of picnic tables set up in a pleasant little dining area. The customers seemed to be a fair mix of locals and tourists and it was very obvious that everyone was welcome. We were greeted with enthusiasm and then we started to review the menu. It's not a giant menu, but there is so much to choose from. If they were open 7 days a week, I would have gone every day to try something new and the prices are very fair. The first day we ate there, we were a group of five. My daughter and I both ordered the chef's choice egg scramble special with no idea what we would get (I think it was called "legal" eggs). My Daughter and I both expected to receive the same dish as the easy path would have been to double up the recipe and plate the same thing twice...nope, not at Mad Martha's! We each received a fully custom, DELICIOUS egg scramble with unique ingredients, served piping hot, and in just the right portion size. Everyone in the party loved what they ordered and by the time we left we felt completely included and like we were part of the community. After you eat there, you spend the day on the beach and I can't think of how life can get much better. We are already plotting how we can get back to this ever-so-charming area from the west coast for a repeat visit. read more

Driving up from Boston to Maine. Needed to make a quick stop, and decided to find a place to eat on the way for breakfast. We eat Keto (low carb, high fat, moderate protein) We stopped here based on Yelp reviews, and we learned, apparently this place has been around more than 20 years. Adorned with a cute sign on top of the door, Mad Martha's was easy to find in this quaint little beach community. Walking in, you're greeted walking in to Mad Martha's kitchen & dining room. Adorably painted - each wall is painted by hand. From fish decorating our table, to a kitty sitting under a sunflower- it's a very eclectic decor. Tin chairs and wooden tables make it match the industrialish feel. Our server was Kelly (she was awesome! ) I ordered a custom scramble (apple chicken sausage, tons of cheese, artichokes, avocado, and mushrooms). Kim ordered the Mum's scramble (avocado, onions & cheese). We both ordered sides of bacon. My response: loved the build your own- tons of choices. She accidentally brought my meal with home fries and toast. Not a biggie- when we found out, she brought fruit no problem. No cheddar as ordered, but a lot of Swiss. Was still delicious. Food I got was a healthy portion and very yummy. Kim's response: great! I loved that the onions were caramelized instead of being raw like most places. The fruit was good, and the bacon was amazing!
