I agree with Claudia G. I love the Changs concept but I like the Tigard location much better. The beaverton location does need a makeover and definite cleaning. The exhaust fan over the stove is caked with grease, the neon lights have a couple inches of black dust on them. So unsightly. The lighting could be better but the service and the staff and the food is great. Tigard location is my recommendation. read more

This place sucks, I came for dinner at 5:00 which is what time they open, we made our bowls and had the cook prepare them. Everyone in the line was very confused because the stupid cook was mixing all of the dishes. I only got two things in my bowl, when I got it back I had peppers, mushrooms, pineapples, and all of this other crap I didn't get. So by the time I got my plate back, the line was super long which was a waist of my time. If you ever intend to eat here, have a lot of patience and time. (P.S. I've been going here since I was a kid so my opinion is kida bias, but if you like all you can eat and like to choose your own flavor you can't beat this place. It can get a little messy at times but that's just because so many people frequent this location, so sometimes the during dinner and weekends the grill line can get long, but it is always worth the wait. The owners have been in business for a long time so they must be doing something right. Also the staff make a conscious effort to be kind to my children and are always friendly and courteous, and if there not they don't last long. I am an experienced Mongolian BBQ enthusiast. I am from San Jose, California, where we are are blessed with TONS of options for Mongolian. First there was King's Mongolian BBQ (RIP) in East Side, President Restaurant in South Side, Mongo's in downtown (RIP), but most importantly, Su's Mongolian BBQ in Santa Clara. Su's Mongolian will forever be the one that set the bar for everyone else. My father, a Vietnam veteran, first tried Mongolian BBQ where it actually originated - in Taipei at Ghengis Khan Mongolian BBQ, the first Mongolian joint EVER. He introduced me to the food, and he will swear by Su's as being the next best to the one in Taipei. That being said, on to Chang's. I recently moved to Beaverton after getting a new job with my company. I discovered Chang's the day I flew up to pick up my apartment keys, and I had a few qualms right away. I will go through a few things with some comparisons to how it's done at an authentic style Mongolian grill: A) Mongolian BBQ should have a wide variety of sauces. Some staples of Mongolian BBQ that I have noted at EVERY MBBQ joint I've ever been to are: Curry Sauce (yes, I'm white, but this is my absolute favorite), Sweet and Sour Sauce, and Chili Sauce for making it spicy. ( I will say they do have chili sauce at the end of the cooking line for *after* you receive your cooked bowl - but nothing compares to how it tastes with those flavors cooked in. I put it on before they cooked my bowl). I bring my own curry powder to Chang's for flavor. B) The cooks use too much water to the "clean the grill" as they rotate your food around the grill, and they also put water on your food. Problem: water removes all the carefully added sauces straight off your food and leaves you with a bland, boring, sauceless *treat*. Cooked chili sauce should leave your noodles/meats/veggies with a red tinge, and this does not happen due to the overuse of water to "unstick" your food from the grill. By cleaning the grill, the caked residues of the sauces that were there from the previous customer get removed. This is actually disadvantageous to the Mongolian enthusiast. Many Mongolian bbqs spray the griddle down with a light cooking oil to make it non-stick. This prevents the use of water. No water = SUPER tasty bowl, packed with saucy flavor. Fellow Mongolian enthusiast friends know the rule: NEVER put your bowl on a freshly cleaned grill. Let the idiot behind you go first so their food is bland and then yours ends up rockin'. D) They do not have a side bar of things like eggrolls, Fried rice, etc. They offer steamed rice, rice pancake, and a cup of soup with your Meal. The steamed rice is the only part that isn't crap. Good luck screwing up steamed rice. Their Egg Flour Soup is god awful - completely without flavor. So flavorless, that even after adding about a liter of Sriracha to it, it still tasted bland. *Note: This is not a requirement for a Mongolian BBQ - but still a disappointment. Also, when you see sauce combo recommendations (one scoop this, one scoop that) - immediately quadruple the numbers they provide. More sauce = cooler grilling surface = sauce doesn't vaporize immediately on a 350 degree grill. This will add a helluva lot more flavor to your bowl (so long as those "cooks" don't douse it in water, completely removing all your sauces from your bowl). To the owners of Chang's:: 1) Add Curry, Sweet and Sour Sauce, and Chili Paste at the Sauce station. 2) Spray the grill with non-stick cooking spray and limit the use of water. Water is not required when I put about 15 scoops of sauces in my bowl. Your chefs should be paying attention to the amount of liquid that comes with each bowl. Water is NOT required when there is a bath of sauce - only when people follow the "recommendations" which means all your sauce vaporizes the moment it touches the grill. 3. Add a sidebar, 4. Hire cooks with Mongolian experience. I can't BELIEVE how much water your cooks currently use. I can cook Mongolian BBQ at home without the use of water, and it tastes WAY better than what I paid you for. I want a $30 dollar refund for my bland meal tonight. I will say out of love of the food - I have had one good experience at this Chang's. The reason: the cook in the afternoon used 1/10th the water that the night guys used. My bowl was spicy and fantastic. That's all I have to say about that. read more

This place is overpriced especially for dinner even for an all you can eat. The ambiance here is pretty gloomy. They are always short a cook and the food is just meh. You pick your meats and veggies and noodles and have the cook make your food in front of you. Don't stand too close because you'll end up smelling like the food you're eating. Make sure you pile on the sauces or else your food will be really bland. I'd skip this place and go elsewhere. I'm surprised they're still in business. read more

Came here to celebrate my son's 12th birthday specifically because of the many mentions online that they offer a free meal on your birthday. My son likes Chang's, but it isn't his absolute favorite and now I wish I'd taken him to his 1st choice. The server was amazing, very friendly and attentive. The food is OK, not great especially for the price, but there's a lot of variety. When the check came I noticed I was charged for my son's meal and asked why it wasn't free, as advertised. I was told that you have to show picture ID to get the free birthday meal. How many 12 year olds do you know who have a picture ID with their birthdate on it? And do they really have a huge problem with people trying to scam free meals for 12 year olds? The server was very apologetic but said it was the owners policy that picture ID had to be shown to get the free meal. I told him how seriously disappointed I was and that they should clearly state that the free birthday meal isn't offered to children. I should mention that they had no problem charging me the adult price for his meal. The server had no authority to extend the customer a courtesy and offer the free meal to my son. I will not return to Chang's anytime soon, if ever. read more

A buffett-style ingredient bar lets you load up on as much of whatever you want and the grill is an exciting change to fast food. Been going here for years. The food is good however pricey. The lines to get the food cooked is friggin' ridiculous and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5. It takes too long to eat. For as successful as this restaurant is you would think they could expand a little and add another grill in there. I remember going to a Mongolian Grill when I was a kid and I loved it. I was super excited when I found Chang's here on yelp. The 4 star rating clinched it I couldn't wait to eat here. Oops, wrong! My husband and I have both worked in the restaurant industry in management for quite some time, we know all about health and safety standards... in essence Chang's didn't meet our health and safety standards. We pulled up a little before 6 on a Friday night, parking lot was packed, so much so that people were parked where there weren't spots. Wow! This place must be good! The lobby was packed we were quoted a 15 minute wait we were seated in 10 minutes awesome! That's the end of the awesome! This is how the dining experience is supposed to commence according to the menu on the table. Wait for your server they will take your drink order and soup choice and then you can head over to the buffet to put together the meal you want them to cook up for you. Ok, we figure out what we want to drink and the server flies by waving at us and telling us to go to the buffet he'll come back later. We had my one year old son with us so we agreed to take turns going to the buffet, my husband and I left our drink order with my parents and headed to the buffet. This is where I get grossed out. It was jam packed, there was raw food everywhere, people were grabbing tongs throwing the food in their bowls and tossing them back into the food. Now imagine for me the germs on these peoples' hands all over the grips of the tongs and those grips are now literally in the food, so much so that to get the tongs out you have to stick your hands in the food to get them out. People are dipping tongs into one food and then another (cross contamination anyone?). I swallow down my initial grossed out reaction and deal. I put my bowl together and wait in the amazingly long line to have it cooked (our fault for going when it was so busy). I send my husband back to the table to let my parents hit the buffet seeing how long it's going to take to have it cooked. I watch closely as they cook up our food (btw this is a communal grill). When my plate is handed to me there are now 4 shrimp on top of it (I absolutely despise seafood, it makes me sick) I quickly push the shrimp off my plate before I can think too much about it and head back to the table. If you're allergic to anything I wouldn't eat here because there is a pretty good chance that whatever it is you're allergic to might end up in your food once it's cooked up. My husband and I both ended up with a couple extras in our food that we hadn't put in there. I get back to the table it's been about 20 minutes since our server sent us to the buffet and he still hadn't returned to get our drink order, on his next pass by I flag him down and give him our drink order and ask him for the soup that we're supposed to get with our meal as well as the white rice that's supposed to be on the table to eat our food with. After all that the food was so-so, maybe it was my already grossed out reaction affecting my taste buds, but being grossed out as we were my husband and I agreed we would not be returning. read more

Service was good, but that is the end of it. The food is basically standard smorgasborg stuff for the grill. The big problem I had was the place was not clean. In fact when I had to use the restrooms, they were not only filthy, they could be smelled in the hall as you approached them, and the hallway was only one or two steps from the food area, and the restroom was only one or two steps further. Took a lot of care to not mix my food with another and separated my meat out and flipped each piece separately so they are just right. Super awesome! Good variety of meats and veggies ... I've been coming here since I was a child & I've always loved the selection of meat, veggies, & sauces, as well as watching the food being cooked on the grill. The restaurant does have an older, somewhat-dated look to it, but the service has always been good, they are very friendly, & I've never felt rushed despite the relatively quick turn-over of tables (meaning the wait isn't usually too long--in my experience--for a table on busy Friday and Saturday nights). We decided to try Chang's again after a poor experience a year ago. This place used to have lines out the door, but on a Friday night we walked right in without a wait. While we were getting our food, the man in front of us started yelling obscenities at a younger man. He continued to yell, call him names, intimidate him, harass him for a solid 5 minutes. He got into his face at least 6 times. The cooks at the grill looked at him and did nothing. My daughter was behind me and had to witness this ridiculous scene. When I asked the manager to intervene, he talked to the man and his female friend. The manager came back to my table and said that the female would keep him in line. I'm not sure what he was thinking because she wasn't able to for the 5 minutes that he was yelling prior to the talking to from the manager. This is DEFINITELY NOT a FAMILY FRIENDLY restaurant as no child should have to be exposed to this type of behavior and vocabulary! read more

Food was tasty but the service was horrible. Had an empty soda entire time i was there. I could not find the waitress until the end of our meal. The only time i was payed any attention to the server was rude. We literally had to find her, ask for the check/ice cream and then in the middle of asking she simply walked away mid-sentence , No fortune cookies was brought to our table with the check. It's so hard to find good Chinese food in Beaverton, unlike Thai or Vietnamese; the usual Chinese fare is bland, highly battered, nondescript. Chang's is not typical Chinese food or gourmet dining, but it is very good in its Mongolian Grill class, and the hot and sour soup, very peppery, is better than in typical Chinese restaurants. I've only gone for lunch. It's very economical. Service is extremely attentive and the wait staff is friendly. Ingredients are not fancy but pretty good. Tasty onions and other veggies, meats are OK, a variety of sauces. They'll bring you rice, and soft serve for dessert hits the spot. The pancakes for wrapping are not so good. This is a place for fast food, but fast food with character. read more
