Staff: they were friendly and served fairly quickly. Food: the food overall was either overcooked or extremely thick sauced foods. The fried foods felt like it was fried twice (meaning they just refried it to make it hot) and it was dense and hard. The best dish was the green beans and beef. Taste of Sichuan was packed so we went here: what a pleasant surprise. It's generally a good idea to order the first thing listed on the menu. Here, under the seafood heading, is the ample boneless fish filet in hot spicy gravy: excellent! Ordered six other dishes which were at or above par. The only unanimous disappointment was the salt and pepper deep fried squid. No outer crisp and too chewy, a far cry from Eastside's Zien Hong. Service was prompt and uncharacteristically attentive for a Chinese restaurant. Parking was relatively easy. A winner of a place that probably isn't top of mind. read more

This is a solid 3.5 stars but I tend to round up. So for the positive points, they had a really nice server and the inside was very decorated nicely and clean. I did order cashew shrimp, which I've never had before. It was really flavorful but a little salty. The only negative was, it was heavy with celery and green bell peppers. So i'm not totally a fan of those two vegetables, but again the flavor was fantastic. And it came with a small soup. Hot tea is an extra two dollar charge. This place was Chiam for many decades. Used to be in the tiny shopping area on the corner of Cornell and Murray. Roughly where The Haven coffee shop is now. They moved to their current location next to the foreign auto repair shop after they tore that row of businesses down. Several years ago Hometown Taste took over the location. The food is still about the same and the bar is mostly unchanged. There are better Chinese restaurants in the area and Hometown is more American Chinese than actual Chinese. That's not to say that there is anything wrong with the food here. Just like when it was Chiam, it's tasty food at a reasonable price, especially if you go with a special. Portions are generous and the staff is very friendly and very attentive. Ample seating and I've never seen either location come anything close to SRO. No reservations needed for sure. Plenty of on-site parking and right on Cornell in the heart of Cedar Mill. I eat here several times a year, usually with a friend. Nothing not to like here hence the five star review. read more

I have been driving by the restaurant a few times, and I looked it up here and saw the many positive comments. With Super Bowl the next day, I wanted to go out and I love GOOD Chinese Food. This it it. My wife and I went to Hometown Taste and we enjoyed the food immensely. Good Taste Noodle is also quite good, but this is better. We started with an appetizer of Vegetable Egg Rolls. So good. I ordered the Sweet & Sour Chicken and it was so excellent. Very fresh. My wife had the Deep Fried Tofu Szechuan Style and she loved it. We also shared an order of the Vegetable Chow Mein and Vegetable Fried Rice. Both were also phenomenal. (she is vegetarian). We will be back to dine in or also take food home. The fish seems fried, which I prefer, so the tail bones were crispy and edible. The garlic version comes with a lot of veggies. Ordered Kung pao chicken, mild as I don't like tons of heat, the dish had flavorful sauce, not greasy and tasty with rice. Could have used a few more peanuts. But not a big deal. String beans were fresh, crisp, large succulent pieces and tasty. Plenty of eggplant too. Overall we're very pleased with all dishes. Service was good, nothing extra, and nothing to complain about. We went there on the weekend for dinner. It's a good idea to make a reservation because sometimes they get very busy. Also we have to call in a day before to reserve the whole chicken otherwise it may not be available. The steamed chicken is our favorite. It's very flavorful and the ginger sauce that comes with it is so tasty that we can just eat that with rice. Other dishes in general are good. Their food is really close to home cooking than restaurant style. It does not have strong flavor but mild enough that we all enjoy them. They don't have a lot of choices in the menu. My former 5-star rating had to be downgraded with our latest experience under the new owner. The former Chiam's has gotten a facelift, and new dining room furniture. it looks nice. It was clearly a owner-remodel, as there was gray paint on everything! Interestingly the menu changed. not for the good. they do not have the combo's any longer. The Mar Far chicken is gone, but can be ordered as a sweet and sour with no sauce. The Mongolian beef, normally a favorite, was too slimy, almost tasted like canned beef. This restaurant is a hidden gem. I've lived in this area for over a decade and never tried it previously when it was Chiam, but gave it a shot after it became Hometown Taste. I was pleasantly surprised and happy that there's a great Chinese food option nearby. The dan dan noodles are really good. It has a great nutty and sesame flavor with a nice spice, and the pork adds a nice umami element. We went during lunch and got the lunch portions for the Hometown Hot Chicken and the Beef Broccoli dishes. Both were good. The hot and sour soup was also tasty. Read the reviews and decided to give this place a try as we had heard some of the chefs from Taste of Sichuan worked there now. Nice staff, credit card machine was down but they were working on it and they had an atn in the bar so we figured we would grab cash if it wasn't up and running. Ordered the pot stickers, Kung pao shrimp and the dry pot cauliflower with pork belly. Best part was the pot stickers with delicious sauce. Downhill from there. The Kung pao was mostly celery and nothing like Taste of Sichuan, more like Tang Dynasty's which was horrible. The cauliflower was decent but the pork belly was minimal for a $20 entree. Came home and added salt, pepper and msg, and air fried it. It wasn't a complete disaster. But not worth the 20 plus bucks. Also, you have to order rice or fried rice with it. White rice was 2 bucks. The first time I got take-out from this place was maybe 25 years ago. It was called Chiam (CHInese AMerican) and was in a building that is no longer there. I ordered wonton soup and was puzzled by the ground meat in the soup, rather than the traditional BBQ pork. It was kind of like hamburger meat, and was something I'd never seen before since I came here from the east coast. It was weird, but I figured maybe it was a west coast thing. When the building they were in was demolished, the business moved into the old Tillamook restaurant around the corner on Cornell Rd. in Cedar Mill. Despite my better judgement, I tried it again. Had some OK meals, but there was always something wrong with the food. I stopped ordering from them after I got a Mongolian beef dish with onions that were so old the dish was rank. Over the years, I said to myself, "Maybe I should try them again," and "Maybe if I order the right thing it'll be OK," and randomly had some meals from them, but there were always dishes that were just off somehow. Some time in the last few years, they changed the business to Hometown Taste, and I tried it again. Same result. Some dishes were OK, but there was always something that was like "WTF?!?" Once again, against my better judgement I ordered some food from them just last week. It was terrible. The orange chicken tasted like it was made with old chicken. The BBQ pork was totally inedible, old, greasy and translucent looking, like it had been sitting around forever. It went straight into the trash. The fried rice smelled fishy, and I didn't order anything with seafood in it.
