My husband and I actually did our rehearsal dinner here back in September as we really wanted to have some Asian food incorporated into our wedding celebration. We contacted a few restaurants that are close proximity to our wedding venue and Chao Phra Ya was one of them. We spoke with staff a few months before the event to see if they can cater to 25 people. They were very helpful. We settled and we were glad we did. The food was delicious and service was great. Even though they don't have a private room, we got one section of restaurant to ourselves. Our family and wedding party raved about the food. The portions were great as well. We returned last month to try our rehearsal menu again and it did not disappoint. The restaurant is super cute on the inside, and it's pretty open and you're not packed crazy close at all. One of the best Thai places in NoVA. They have khao soi which is not offered in a lot of other restaurants. Not only was it delicious but they gave you two huge chicken drumsticks which were cooked perfectly tender. I've only had it in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand and it brought me back. The duck with chili and basil was the best I ever had. The portions were generous and the outside was crispy without sacrificing the middle where it was nice and juicy. I've also had the pad Thai with shrimp here a few times and it's really flavorful with the noodles cooked well. For the drunken noodles, I think I'll ask for more spice next time. This is one of my favorite Thai spots and will come here again and again, especially if I'm craving some comfort food like khao soi. read more

This place exceeded my expectations by a mile. Their menus had so many different types of dishes whether it's rice-based, noodles, curries, etc. They also had a drink menu with a bunch of different cocktails or beers. I thnk my group got 5 different dishes ranging from duck curry, drunken noodles, fried rice. Everything was so incredibly seasoned and well-cooked. I've never had duck-prepared thai cuisine and it honestly might be my new favorite. Went on a Saturday evening for dinner around 5:30. It was a little early but we went there after watching the gold medal basketball game. Not a ton of ambiance which is expected from a Thai restaurant. They said they didn't have a bartender that day which was weird since it was a Saturday night so I couldn't try any of the drinks. I did get a lychee drink that was only ok. We shared a bunch of things. I loved the Hawaiian red curry with the shrimp. The pad see ew was solid and the medium spice was the perfect level for me although others thought it was a little too spicy. The pad Thai was nothing special, same with the pineapple fried rice. The drunken noodles were good but the noodles were a little too soft. My friends love the Penang chicken and it was good but that's not something I ever order so I guess I don't have anything to compare it to. Today we chose Thai and we were not disappointed...the decor is simple and cute with lots of stuffed animals the staff is very kind, the service was amazing and very fast! Passed this place on my way to golds and stopped by to check it out. Interior: oh my gawd it is sooo cute inside, very Instagram friendly. Worth a stop by just to check it out honestly haha Food: got the drunken noodles and a fried rice dish. Drunken noodle was a solid medium spicy, the fried rice was ordered at a "spicy" spice level which is was much spiced than my boifriend anticipated because I think once it goes past medium they seem to add in jalapeño slices? They're kind of cut like bell peppers so they were consumed without much thought but, eating almost an entire half of a jalapeño in the first few bites will kind of destroy your pallet for the remainder of the dish so just something to watch out for. I ended up swapping dishes with the boifren and to me it was spicy but nothing insane and given his tolerance for spicy is decently more than mine, I can only conclude it was due to inhaling the jalapeño. I thought the flavor was excellent, and spice level matched my definition of a solid "spicy". So just be sure to pick out the peppers if you order this haha. My only issue was with the vegi Tom yum soup, there's so much vegi crammed into the tiny bowl there was barely any soup haha, and the soup itself was super suuuuper concentrated like I felt like I was drinking straight soup base .___. Dranks: super creative drinks, alcohol definitely in there, only issue I had with mine was that since it was a blended drink, I found that the chunks of ice wasn't fully broken up so it just kept getting stuck in the straw. The result reminds me of before I got my ninja blender and was using this super cheat blender from Amazon that couldn't properly blend anything. Pleases upgrade your blender!! I don't even write reviews but this is how irritated I was with the service. The food is great here hence why I have spent hundreds of dollars in this place. This past Saturday night was beyond terrible. I don't know who this part time manager was working this night but we have never received worse service from this place and particular two individuals until this day. I called to put in a order around 920pm last minute granted but they told us it was take 30-40 mins which was already past the time the location closes that night so we decided to check other places for faster service but then resulted in calling back to place an order. We spoke with a lady on the phone which tried to get us to pay over the phone when we have paid upon pick up many times and had an attitude from the phone all the way upon pick up. And I'm glad we didn't, because we ordered 3 entrees and because they made a mistake we only had 2. How you confuse chicken pad Thai with chicken satay I will never know. This is how I knew the original female manager wasn't working. Then instead of correcting the issue because the "kitchen was now closed" they basically said fuck our order the lady proceeded to argue with my lady over the phone while I'm updating my lady on the issue and how they messed up her order and refused to remake it that night. I agreed to them not making it but asked for compensation because now we our 1 entree less and can't really order any other Thai places at this time. Not only did the lady proceed because I was rightfully irritated to take my whole order out of my hand when I never said I didn't want the food as a whole. The manager questioned "you are looking for some compensation?" And then proceeded to use the fact that had we ordered the food the first time we called this wouldn't have happened. Took no accountability whatsoever and didn't try to even resolve the issue. And because I am black they wanted to make it appear as if I was wrong in the situation. I don't even argue with people in a restaurant and as a previous server I have the upmost respect for people in food service. This situation could have easily been resolved with a come back tomorrow and we will make the CORRECT ORDER on the house. If you can't fix a $17 meal on the house cuz yal fucked up you all need to reconsider your finances as a business. at the end of it they took the food from me (again glad I didn't pay for the food) because we didn't get ANY OF OUR FOOD at the end of it. I was pissed and no longer wanted to a pay an additional penny in that building. If they think I'm done with just a review I'm not. It's located at a plaza that has about 20 eating places in total, yet differentiates itself with the cousine type (Thai) and very comfortable and pleasant interior setup. We came here for a group lunch on a weekday. They have special lunch menu that give you plenty of options for $10-$13 that includes the entree you pick plus the complimentary spring roll. Despite the fact that the place was comparatively busy (given that it was a Friday early afternoon), the service was fast and everyone got what they ordered almost at the same time. All of us enjoyed our meals: Chicken Basil rice, Drunken Noodles, Beef curry, and Lemongrass Chicken soup. Those who ordered smoothies were surprises by how flavorful they were plus the cute ribbon on each mug (Taro smoothie is great! Check out the pics!) The check automatically included 17% gratuity that was not expected but OK since we were a group of six. I didn't notice a line on the menu about the automatic gratuity being added though. I wasn't a fan of this place. It is popular on the NoVA FB foodie group, and all I can say is that maybe it caters to the clientele of the area (mainly non Asian patrons) as it was way too sweet. My European friend and I the East Asian one ordered lunch specials -- chicken pad thai along with Penang curry with duck. Both were shockingly sweet, and we tried to dilute the flavor down with our rice. The duck was dry and lacking in duck flavor -- my friend thought maybe it was leftover duck. The pad thai was super sweet AND sour and covered in a red syrupy sauce. It was also lacking in vegetables - I expect more scallions, bean sprouts, carrots, peppers for a crispy textured dish. My mistake for ordering this. Pad thai is hard to get right, and it should only be ordered once the restaurant has proven itself. We contemplated not taking the leftovers home which is way odd for us frugalistas . . . but I do have a family member who is a wiz at incorporating leftovers into tasty concoctions who may be up for the challenge. The service was okay for an Asian joint with a healthy bit of ignoring. That was easily remedied by eye contact and waving the server down. It is interesting how our server asked, "How was your food?" and then walked away without even hearing our lukewarm "okay . . ." On a good note, the Thai iced tea tasted right. The vegetable spring roll that came with our meal was crispy and flavored well. They have cute decorations with little Asian stuffies scattered around the place.
