Was looking for a nearby restaurant close to the airport and found a gem in Chao Phra Ya! Chao Phra Ya is located ~8 minutes from the airport in a shopping center that has other restaurants, Giant, etc. Once you enter into the restaurant, you are welcomed by the cute decor and homey atmosphere. I'm a huge fan of stuffed animal so I loved the addition of them throughout the restaurant. We ordered a few dishes. We got the 1) grilled squid 2) papaya salad, 3) kao soi chicken, 4) Pineapple thai red curry and 5) drunken noodles. All dishes were really good and well portioned for the price! I think my favorite dishes were the grilled squid, drunken noodles, and the pineapple Thai red curry. The sauces that accompanied the grilled squid were delicious and I liked the char flavor the squid had. I actually ordered the pineapple Thai red curry by accident instead of the pineapple fried rice! However, it was a good mistake as the pineapple Thai red curry was delicious and the pineapple added a nice sweetness to the curry that I've never had before. Finally, my go to Thai dish to order is always drunken noodles and this place definitely dished it well! Tonight we called and made reservations . We showed up on time and promptly ordered our food. We waited one hour while several other orders and tables who were sat after us received their food. After we reminded them where's our food, their manager stopped by and said your food is being made now. They just completely forgot about us while we sat there. Several people came in after us sat down got their food. This was absolutely horrible service. Sad cause we heard great things about this place. Their excuse was that they had a lot of togo orders. Okay fair but how do other tables who sat after us got their food? Just admit you forgot to put our order in. Be honest. The manager offered to serve us one of our food items which was "almost ready." Lol one hour later "one" item was almost ready. I went and paid for my Thai Iced Tea and we all left. We have been coming here for many years and the food is always perfectly cooked, incredibly delicious, and beautifully presented. We have never once had a bad meal. The staff and manager/owner are so friendly and efficient and I cannot say enough wonderful things about them. We've ordered takeout from this Thai place before but was a bit disappointed with the taste. Though it was still within our expectation since takeout usually doesn't taste as good as eating the food fresh from the restaurant. So we decided to give it another try and dine in with some adventurous friends. The restaurant was located in a plaza with plenty of parking available. There are also plenty of seats in the restaurant so no need to wait. The seats were comfortable and the decor was quite interesting as well. We ordered their pineapple fried rice (same as our takeout order) and it tasted so much better this time. The right amount of spice and flavoring. Not enough pineapple pieces but the flavor of pineapple comes through nicely. Overall pretty happy with this dish. We also tried their Koi Soi. The flavor was amazing but the chicken didn't have much flavor and didn't feel too warm either. Would be nice instead of drumsticks to get chicken thigh instead to absorb more of the flavoring. Came here for a birthday dinner one night, never had Thai food all the way out in Herndon, so was definitely looking forward to trying this spot! For food, I got the Duck Thai Red Curry, and for dessert the Sweet Rice with Mango. Thai Red Curry is one of my favorites, so I was really interested to see how it would taste with some nice duck meat: the curry itself was very tasty and had a nice assortment of vegetables, and the spices mixed in with the coconut milk made it taste like a classic Thai curry! The duck meat was a bit on the dry side and didn't have much seasoning/flavor to it, I would've rather just had a different meat like chicken instead, maybe it was a matter of just being a bit overcooked. The Dessert Sweet Rice with Mango though was pretty fantastic! Beautiful presentation with fresh mangos sprinkled with gold flake, fresh berries, and a very pretty blue sweet rice. The sweet rice made with coconut milk tasted great with the sweetness and tartness of the mango, definitely a must-get for dessert. Service was nice and accommodating, we had some party members that showed up at different times and they got us a large table to hold everyone. We usually do take out from this place since we live so close by but couple of weeks ago we went there to dine in for the first time. They make THE BEST wonton soup in the DMV area. Chao Phra YA Thai is the place go if you need super tasty Thai food in Reston, Herndon area. I used to go to their Reston place - MyHome Thai Bistro but their quality/taste has been gone down so i did taste about 6 Thai restaurants in the area and finally this place was found. Pricing of the menu is very reasonable and portions are great comparing to others in the area.I drive 5 miles to get my best Thai food (Pad thai, Pineapple fried rice, Crab fried rice, Basil fried rice, Galanga soup and Siam beef) . I go to them at least three/four times a week and they don't disappoint. Their staff is very nice and accommodating. Manager Jake and his team is awesome. However, their kitchen is super busy on weekends (F. Sat. Sun). You need to order ahead of time like 45 mint- 1hr in advance. Perhaps they should hire more people for the kitchen or back end operation if its not enough to cater the demand. You can order food online, but it's a bit more expensive than their menu price. So, I always call them to place my order. I place 3-5 times a week so dont want to pay extra for food platform service fees. I do have to call multiple time though, probably because they are either short on people or super busy. There is an inconsistency in the 'spicy levels'. Sometimes I've noted, their 'spicy level 4' is what is at a spicy level that i can handle, but other times their 'level 4 is too spicy. It changes depending on the chef i think. Want to have the best Thai food of your life? You need to come down to Virginia for it. Every time I'm in the area, I go and get the drunken noodles and the penang curry. I'd also recommend the chive dumplings and getting any of the drinks on the menu. The restaurant is always busy no matter what time you go but I've never had to wait for a table. All of the people working are really nice and they make sure to get the food out as soon as possible. While ordering, they ask for how spicy you want your food, and as words of wisdom... Never get the spiciest level. Trust me, we learned that the hard way. The food is so flavorful and the noodles just melt in your mouth, I wish I was back right now The best part about this restaurant however isn't the food or the service, it's the decor. Love coming here to get my Thai fix. The lunch specials are served quickly and the flavor is great. Today I ordered a bunch of dishes for takeout and the food was prepared EXACTLY to order and on time. The food was still piping hot in the bags when I picked the food up. Right in the heart of Herndon. Easy to find the place and abundant parking available in the area. It is good to have reservations, if not they will be accommodate for walk-ins during non-peak hours. This is my favorite Thai restaurant in NoVA so far! I've come here multiple times before, and the food is consistently yummy! My friends and I recently came for dinner this past week and I ordered the shrimp pad thai (my go-to dish at Thai restaurants). It's always flavorful and has a good amount of shrimp in it. My friend enjoyed her panang curry with chicken. We all shared two desserts: the sweet rice with mango and the crispy fried banana with ice cream. Both were delicious and had beautiful presentation! The sweet rice with mango was the best one I've had compared to other Thai restaurants I've been to. The rice was chewy with the right amount of sweetness, and the mangos were perfectly ripened. The fried banana dessert came out warm, and the vanilla ice cream with whipped cream complemented the bananas so well. Yum! The entree portions and service are always good. I came in here with a party of 3 on a Sunday afternoon, and the decor is simply adorable, and the menu choices are colorful! I got the drunken noodles with beef, and it was just the perfect amount of spice for someone who has a relatively low spice tolerance! The waiter was helpful in suggesting dishes for the party and made sure we had everything. I think the main attraction of this place however is how quaint the chairs and interior is and how many plushies they have around the booths and display shelves!
