I recently tried Desi Chowrastha Indian Eatery in Zionsville and wow... this place absolutely delivered From the moment I walked in, I could feel the warm, vibrant energy--like a little slice of India right here in Indiana. I also love supporting spots like this--it's locally owned by a Hamilton County family, which makes it even better Everything is made fresh daily using authentic cooking methods, and you can truly taste it in every bite. I started with the jalapeño paneer appetizer--creamy, spicy, crispy... honestly addictive. We had the lamb vindaloo and the butter chicken--bold, rich, and perfectly balanced. Saw this place on another review and it looked good so we chose to try it. I'm really glad we did because the food was amazing. The dining area is very nicely decorated and very inviting. We were quickly greeted and the waitress answered any questions we had. I did feel that she was trying to hurry us to order though. We ordered a couple appetizers and a couple meals so that we could share everything. I can't decide which was my favorite because everything was a solid 10. The only thing I would say is not a positive, the waitress asked us to tip in cash. I understand the reason, but its odd to be requested that. We will definietly be back soon despite that. read more

We stopped at Chowrastha for lunch. The restaurant featuring Indian cuisine has only been opened a week and is a relatively new franchise. For lunch they offer a buffet and for dinners, there is an a la carte menu. I'm not usually a buffet kind of diner, but I made an exception to try the food. The benefit of the buffet is that you get to sample many different options. The dining room is upscale, immaculate and comfortable with beautiful murals on the walls. A interesting mural of downtown Indy is over the bar. (BTW, they have a full bar). TV monitors played Bollywood and other colorful Indian shows. The hosted is welcoming and super friendly and tells you to go straight to the buffet, while she gets water. The $15 buffet is separated in to vegetarian options, meat options and salads. I tried a number of my Indian favorites including Chicken Masala, Butter Chicken, Vegetable Curry, Aloo (potato) Pakoda, Assorted Vegetables and salad (romaine) with assorted dressings. I also tried the Rice Curd. My favorite was the Butter Chicken and Aloo Padoka. The food was a perfect spicy for me. It was slightly spicy hot, but not unbearable. The hostess also brought us out servings of warm butter naan. She checked on us several times and encouraged us to try some desert, which we had missed. The balls of Gulab Jamun were sweet and delicious. I was glad she sent us back! Munzul, the owner, stopped by our table and introduced himself. He is friendly and sought honest feedback. We got takeout this weekend, to prepare for the snow! We got chicken biyrani, chicken tikka masala, and hot fried rice, and garlic naan. We picked it up after 20 minutes, which was great! The food was fantastic- our rice did have huge pieces of star anise and other spices which were great unless you bit into a big piece. Our own annoyance was we only got 2 pieces of naan... for the price and comparing to other Indian restaurants it felt a bit stingy. read more

Ordered take out today my husband picked up and so disappointed what $69 got us. None of the dishes I ordered came with rice. I have ordered something similar to other Indian restaurants and it always came with a side of briyani rice. The portions are so small. My 4 year old butter chicken pasta was $8 even though it's small it was justifiably because his dishes was literally the same size as everything else. I wanted to really enjoy this place but for the price and portion you're better off going to saffron down the street in my opinion. Even my garlic naan didn't even look like garlic naan. read more

I have no idea how this place isn't full all day every day. The food is absolutely phenomenal and staff go above and beyond to ensure you have a great experience. I don't even live in the area but every time I visit I make sure to stop by. We ordered the pepper chicken appetizer, butter chicken, and biryani. We also had the homemade mango lassi that tasted like a milkshake and was perfect to soothe the perfect burn of the pepper chicken. Could not recommend this place more! read more

We went in for the lunch buffet and were not disappointed. They had well over a dozen items offered in the buffet, I tried a little bit of most. Taste was delicious. I was really surprised when they told us fresh naan came with the buffet, we got regular and garlic. This was the first Indian buffet I've been to, overall really impressed. read more

Stopped here for dinner on the way back to Cincinnati from West Lafayette. The Indian food was excellent and the servings were plentiful!

I'm honestly not sure what seasoning it was, but there were whole cloves or flower looking seasonings in the rice and they simply weren't edible. They try way too hard to make the food look pretty when it already smells amazing. They just need to take out the hard seasonings that aren't meant to be eaten, but are meant to be discarded. The next reason for why the rating is so low is because of the naan. I'm sorry one piece of non-cut into fours is not four pieces of naan. And one piece of naan being 3.99 it's just too expensive for what is actually one piece of naan. The naan was extremely dry. Naan is usually fluffy and soft and not like a thick tortilla. The cheesy naan literally only had some cheddar cheese on top. Overall, it was just really poor quality and way overpriced. The only thing that was really, really good with no issues whatsoever was the tikka masala with chicken by itself and the Indian fried chicken. But there was no sauce with the Indian fried chicken, which I thought was kind of weird. There's also either Parmesan cheese or salt on top. I couldn't tell what it was, but that was unnecessary. It's already pretty salty and very spicy for something that I didn't expect to be spicy at all. Long story short I am not a fan of this location. I see a lot of people saying that the owner came up to them and asked them how the food was and everything. The owner was there and he was just kind of staring at us the whole time. He never once came over or asked us how we were doing or asked anybody else in there how they were doing. He was just Folding silverware. I was pretty shocked that no one was in there at almost 5 o'clock on a Sunday. I do DoorDash a lot in the area and typically will sit out in the parking lot of this restaurant because there's never anyone there. Partially due to the Google times being different than their actual times but other than that I'm assuming it has to do with the food, not being the best. They might have a better Situation during the buffet time but another huge issues that they don't have fountain drinks. If you want a drink, you will drink it out of a can. The cups were dirty that they gave us so I didn't use the cups that were given with the water, but even with that, why would I Pour my own drink with no ice. I'm sure if I asked for ice I might get some, but he never once asked us what we wanted his drinks. I had to tell him what we wanted and he said oh we just have the drinks that are over in the refrigerator. Now, both of our tummies are upset. Take pride in your food and you'll succeed but if you nickel and dime people it isnt gonna take you far. I'm referring to the price before you add the meat because in almost every item is an up charge to choose a meat. I might be wrong, but pretty much everything that I saw on the menu did not come with any sort of naan. Maybe that's something that's becoming more common, but I thought that it was a little odd. The waiter was really nice, but the lady behind the counter did have a staring problem, she's my fiancé no need to stare at her while she eats. This is a very new and welcome addition to the area. The restaurant is bright, colorful, lovely. The staff is pleasant and helpful. I went in to order carryout because the website had a long wait time listed. I was out with my food in less than 10 minutes as quoted on ordering. I looked over the buffet while waiting and will definitely try that next time for dishes i am not familiarwith. I ordered chicken tikka masala and you choose your level of spice. The lunch portion is 16 oz of the chicken dish and a separate container with 16 Oz of seasoned basmati rice. I will absolutely recommend and go back. read more

I great addition to the area. We had a party of 14 and they handled it well. With that many and us sharing the dishes an wonderful cross section of their menu both appetizers and main courses. Two of our group consider themselves Indian foodies and both gave it two thumps up. Friendly staff and prompt service. Glad they are now open. Understand a buffet addition at certain days is coming.
