I hate to have to leave a bad review as the employees I interacted with were both very friendly. My interaction with them leads me to believe that the deceptive business practices I (and apparently others) encountered come from higher up. I can only assume that a business that takes advantage of it's customers takes advantage of it's employees in whatever ways it can also. My specific case: I had a screw in my tire. It is a relatively new tire with plenty of tread left and the screw had planted itself between the tread, not in the sidewall. When I took it in just before closing the person working the counter said they could plug it for me no problem if I left it overnight, and wouldn't even charge me for it. "Too kind! Thank you" I said, thinking that is how you generate loyal customers. The next day I had a message saying that they couldn't repair the tire. I called them up and they said something about the angle of the puncture, it sounded half baked. The person on the phone didn't sound completely convinced themselves and like they had a script for the "Snap Financing" they should try to steer me towards to pay for two new tires (so they'd wear evenly). After politely declining to buy new tires from them they were willing to re-inflate my damaged one so I could drive away. when I took it to another local shop today they were able to plug it no problem. I even asked if there was anything unusual or any reason at all they might have suggested I get new tires. The guy who did fix it basically said "If I wanted you to spend $500 you didn't need to today I could have tried lying to you too." in actuality he just said "Nope, it was a simple plug." Two stars for friendly employees who hopefully find something better when this place hopefully goes under, like it deserves to in my estimation. read more

My mother, who's very elderly, accidentally put car cleaner in her gas tank. She's on a fixed income and doesn't have much money, but these guys fixed her car for a very very fair price and even went the extra mile to make sure she was taken care of. They even replaced the fuel filter at no cost, which they didn't have to, and were very understanding about the cost. I would definitely recommend them to anyone who needs their car fixed. read more

They told me I needed new wheel bearings, because my wheel bearings were bad...tensioner belts, an alignment, spark plugs, AC compressor belt and brake fluid . That was totaling $3255.30!!! I paid them the diagnostic amount which was reasonable.. Next morning I brought my car to Braxtons in Hillborough and they checked it ALL..said I did NOT NEED ANY OF THAT, and that my brakes were fine, the bearings were all good, the belts were good, spark plugs, etc. I did get brake fluid changed. Nice people. Chapel Hill Tire in Carrboro is a dishonest group. I will NEVER go there again. They also told me that MY WHEEL COULD FLY OFF AT ANY TIME, and that really scared me. read more

I've been going here and to Honda servicing for years. Used to really trust them, but have been dissappinted lately. Not a fan of leaving bad reviews but if you don't have a ton of money to spare and aren't very knowledgeable about cars it's important to go to someone you trust. Unclear about certain charges or charged for things that really shouldn't be. They used to call ahead of time to confirm if you're ok going ahead with a service and paying for it. Or they'd tell you how much something costs ahead of time so you're not shocked, this was a huge reason I came back but that's not the case anymore. Finally, I asked for a state inspection that was never done so I had to come back to get it done the day registration is due. Miscommunications happen I get it, but for some reason I was made to feel it was my mistake, odd. I'm now going to someone my family has known for years, understanding that some of the things I've been charged for at CHT was unnecessary. read more

Eventually, the 4 new tires I bought this past Friday may turn out to be a great deal, they may have been installed correctly and improve the ride...but, at present I have no idea about of if it. Why? Well, let me tell you a fun story about how a great sounding service where they pick up and drop off your car went terribly wrong. The vehicle pickup went fine, my wife watched the car because they wanted us to leave the keys on the seat and being that it has the auto-lock security feature, I left the window down in case. They changed the oil and did the yearly inspection (and like most inspection places that have a primary line of business, found that it needed something fixed - in this case, a new tire of course). I decided to get 4 new tires because it was time I would need to spend in the future anyway, might as well get 4. They also found that the previously working TPM needed a new sensor. I'm not saying they're wrong, just that it wasn't fun. It does happen, though. What doesn't often happen - or shouldn't - because in this case it did, was the HUGE mistake made when they dropped my car off after the service. If you're a person the enjoys a good book, then you've probably already guessed the twist ending because I foreshadowed it in the beginning. On this, Labor Day Weekend, my dear reader, my car was dropped off to me, great looking new tires equipped, broken tire pressure sensor on the front seat with the invoice, sitting right next to the keys. THE KEYS?! I hoped maybe the window was down, like I left it. Maybe the auto-lock feature hadn't engaged yet?! No, and also no. How long had it been sitting there like that, why wasn't I called or sent a text on delivery? No idea. And there it sits. In front of my house. All dressed up and no place to go. I'd attempted to get in touch with Chapel Hill Tire, but they closed on Friday after the car had been dropped off. And they're closed on the weekend, probably also closed on Labor Day. I could call a lock smith and then wrestle with Chapel Hill Tire to pay for the service after the fact (I may still), but that seems like an uphill battle. We will see how the weekend goes. Wish me luck. So far, I haven't had any. UPDATE: They hit me up on here and sent out their towing company to open the car, on the weekend, no charge. This is a classic "upsell" operation. Daughter went in for an oil change SPECIFICALLY STATED ONLY THAT and they tried to upsell her by $1250! Change plugs, differential oil change, new battery etc. at 60K. Bullshit. The oil change price in their website is much lower than the billed value. STAY AWAY In past they have botched even tire installation by damaging the pressure sensor. Auto Logic is expensive but they don't upsell. read more

Not only did they fix the issue (patch) but they took the time to due a "real" inspection and walkthrough together. There was no up selling of products or services, just great customer service. Been going here (Carrboro location) for years, bought many sets of tires for our family's vehicles.  Most recent visit was for state inspection, which they failed me for tires were too worn, OK fine. The quote was $3,500 for 4 new tires, because it included an array of work the car did not need whatsoever, essentially a whole new suspension.   Car drives perfect and is seen by other mechanics regularly. I opted for new tires for about $630. If you know what you are doing and cannot be taken advantage of, and don't mind being lied to, then this is the place for you.  The work itself was fine and they picked up and dropped off my vehicle. If not, you might be getting ripped off. I would use the word predatory to describe the up-sell of unnecessary work like this.   1 star. read more

I used to trust these guys, but apparently they are under new management. They asked for $76 to blow leaves out of the engine area. They are not good about calling you to tell you what work is needed; you need to call them. Worst of all, they worked on my car for its annual maintenance. I picked it up and drove home about 15 miles. The next time I used the car, I got a flat tire within 5 miles of driving. They had given me a report saying the tires were in great shape. They overinflated the tires significantly, but I don't know if that was the cause of the flat tire. I don't plan to go back to them. read more

I had this reply to a review on another site (see below) for the Store Manager. I forwarded all my information to the manager via email and guess what...NO REPLY. His response sounds good but he's just trying to deflect from my negative review without making it right. Came here for the first time for an NC State inspection on a Monday and was out in 25 minutes. As soon as I checked my car in, I received a text and email notification. I was impressed by the service and the waiting room -- the people are very nice and they offer coffee, beverages, and crackers during the wait. So update! Todd the GM helped us with our issue and has rectified it, we had a horrible carrboro chapel hill tire experience due to an unapproved repair. I'm giving a 5 star because they did also work on my car and changed the tires and did an alignment on it and so far so good no complaints hope to not have to. Chapel hill tire is still a must place to take your car in the area of carrboro and chapel hill, unfortunately I can't lie and confidently say at the moment go to the carrboro location but Franklin street location and Cole park plaza it might be a long wait but worth it as I have visited those locations before in the past and never had issue with them. If you've gone to the carrboro location and had a bad experience I recommend you keep yourself calm and collected and immediately try and contact Todd or a manger who will actually help and instead of arguing with a worker as that will get you nowhere and nothing fixed - I assure you Todd will fix the issue and be fair and listen to your complaint. Don't let one location or person ruin your idea of the company. As a community we can help chapel hill tire better with our reviews and letting them know what's going on. I assure you from when talking to the GM he wasn't rude he was super helpful and got back to us ASAP! Fixed the issue and knew and understood what went wrong and there is nothing better then to know that a company has people like that running it to fix it and make it better. Again as I've seen many people on here angry be more aggressive in their reviews ( I know I was at first and hopefully it was understood why) but it gets you nowhere. I took my car to be serviced and inspected. I was told I needed to replace ALL lug nuts and spark plugs. When asked the cost of the lug nuts, their reply was 320. Hmm. I needed clarification. Both possibilities, $320 or $3.20, couldn't be, right? Right, though the quote was $320. I called a dealer, a dealer!, and was quoted 180 installed. Oh, I bet you're wondering about the spark plugs. Replacing those ching chinged to over $700, because the top cam had to be removed. The same dealer quoted around $400. I ended up taking the car to Doug Horne Automotive. Doug easily removed all the lug nuts and tested the spark plugs. No replacements needed. Go figure. read more

Took the car to a nearby reputable service station and the car passed inspection - no problem at all! They used to be great but something has changed. read more

My car dealer service said I need a new wheel bearing, about a $1,000 job. I brought my car to Chapel Hill Tire for a 2nd opinion. They said it needed $4,500 of "suspension parts and work" and said (and I quote) that it is "definitely NOT a wheel bearing" issue. I asked if it was safe to drive and they say "yes" and I took the car to another shop. They replaced the wheel bearing and resolved the issue. I find this approach of pretend "free second opinion" and let us see if we can find a sucker at best dishonest. Anyway, be aware. I am never going back. read more

I just received a text message with a full vehicle inspection, including pictures and full description of my cars and things I might want to address and things that are totally fine! They helped me with one fix, then had many many (costly) recommended fixes/upgrades for my vehicle, including a detailed diagram of the tire tread depth for each of my tires saying that 2 needed replacement. When I came back for one of their recommendations the next week, the tire tread depth measurements were entirely different--this time the other 2 were recommended for replacement! I started going to F&F instead, they said I was fine and I've been driving on the same tires for a year and a half now with no issues. And I'm not getting upsold anymore. read more

After finding out the tire was not repairable, he simply asked if i had bought the tire with them or someone else and if i had a warranty on my tires. i immediately called the dealership i had bought the tires from and found out i did have a warranty. Chris saved me from spending all that money for a new tire by simply reminding me of a warranty i didnt even know existed! Went for an inspection and was quoted $2300 to fix 1. A brake that was failing, 2. The calipers next to the brakes that I was told were the cause, and 3. The entire exhaust system that was also failing. (At minimum $1400 to fix the brake and exhaust). Took it to my own mechanic who told me there was nothing wrong with the calipers, and that the exhaust system did not need to be replaced, but just the flex pipe that was leaking. Fixed it for $560, passed inspection at Jiffy Lube the next day. Whether Chapel Hill Tire was dishonest, simply missed the source of the problems, or just overpriced I do not know, but either way a very poor experience overall. Glad I got a second opinion, and my mechanic gave me some good advice which is to never get your car inspected at places that also repair cars, which may come up with stuff that your car "needs" to pass inspection. read more

Fantastic service. I was in and out in around 10 minutes for a minor service issue. They were so kind they didn't even charge.

They do not allow you to bring your own parts, so they monopolize the market and force you to pay whatever they want. I ended up towing my car from their shop to another because they were so ridiculously expensive. They got pissy when I told them this, and they left my car a mess! There was grease all over the front and all the parts were just thrown around. They were extremely unprofessional and just trying to scam me. 0/10, would NOT recommend. read more

My car needed a safety inspection and I called in a week before get an appointment before and once I got here they said I don't have an appointment. So now I have to wait for 1.5 hours for them to change 1 light bulb - this is a redo inspection. First time coming here last week. Very pleasant experience to say the least. I usually service in a nearby city at a place-that-must-not-be-named but lately I've grown fed up with the lackluster customer service. Decided to try Chapel Hill Tire due to their good reviews and they certainly didn't disappoint. Made appointment online and was immediately seen when I arrived. Waiting room has reasonable amenities (coffee/tv/sunlit glass room) and service was prompt. Someone even came and updated me on the status of my car after I was waiting for about half an hour and said that it will take another 10 minutes at most. Price was very fair as well. I was gifted a free oil change at Chapel Hill Tire so decided to get an inspection at the same time. Apparently my brake lights failed inspection. It seems pretty sus that BOTH of my brake lights were out on my 7 yr old car, and I never noticed, and they were replaced without checking with me first (is that even legal?) My free oli change and inspection wound up costing over $80. Several services to my vehicle were recommended (spark plugs, filters, etc) which I heard being recommended to other patrons when I went back to pick up my car. I walked away feeling taken. I was delighted to see the 'no contact' option and completed an online appointment request twice. Each time I received confirmation that they had my request and would call to schedule. No one called. Then I called their Carrboro location and asked for their manager, Dalton Elmore. I was told he was unavailable. So I began explaining why I was calling - and every time I spoke the person on the other end interrupted me and said he couldn't hear me. This is strange since I've had no similar problems with making calls anywhere else in the country. I finally hung up and called back - several times. Each time my call was answered but they hung up at the other end. I then tried using the 'chat' feature to leave my number and ask for a call back. Again, I was assured they'd be in touch. I've been a Chapel Hill Tire customer for two cars for the four years we've been living part-time in Chapel Hill. I wish I could bring them to Kansas City when I come "home." Their standards of customer service, levels of care, and attention to detail in every vehicle-care transaction have been superb -- have not seen their equal in my decades of car ownership. They are unfailing in their efforts to accommodate requests of any kind, straight up about what a car needs (comprehensive reporting) and what can be delayed, serious about high quality work, and, by my standards, always fair and often unexpectedly low in their pricing. Their pick up/deliver service during COVID is just wonderful. Dalton, manager at the Carrboro location, and Peter, manager at Cole Plaza (locations where I go) have been uncommonly generous in offering help I would consider extra, and I have regularly had terrific service from Juan and Enrique at Carrboro. But every person at Chapel Hill Tire has been over-and-above in courtesy and patience. Chapel Hill Tire makes me feel like a Car Princess every time. read more

I've only come here for oil changes so far, but I've been very pleased with the service every time. The staff are friendly and efficient and I feel confident leaving my car in their hands. I felt disappointed with the service of Chapel Hill Tire (Carrboro store). They did on 4/27/2022 the following services in my car: oil change, air filter change, and balance/rotate tires. I felt disappointed for three reasons: 1) I requested an appointment for 4/27/2022 on the website some days before the service. I received a message on the website that said that "The store manager at our Carrboro location will be in contact with you soon to confirm your appointment". However, I didn´t receive any contact. 2) When I arrived at the store, I requested all of the mentioned services. However, they didn't change the air filter and I had to wait half an hour additionally to have this service done. 3) I did not mention when I arrived at the store that one lug nut was missing on one of the tires. I think they should have called me when they noticed that one lug nut was missing to ask if I wanted them to put in a new one. They didn't call me and didn't put a new one. When I mentioned the problem at the end of the service, they said to me that they would charge $150.00 to put a new lug nut in my tire. Of course, I refused the service at this price. read more

Well, this was a pleasant surprise. After dragging my feet to get my car fixed (check engine light has been on and off forever, it was idling rough AND accelerating weird), I decided to suck it up and take the car in to get looked at. I had my suspicions as to what it could be - I already had the distributor replaced the FIRST time I had someone look at it, and the second time the guy I went to said everything was fine... until I called him with the problem again and he told me he never checked the spark plugs because they "looked new." So, spark plugs was my guess. I rolled up around 9am and told the guy at the counter my story. I was nervous as I handed over the keys; he didn't write anything I explained to him down! How would he know! No one ever listens to me omg flip out! I treated myself to a coffee and roll at Weaver Street as I walked towards work and tried to calm down. A couple of hours later, I got the call. It was, indeed, my spark plugs. Also needed to do some kind of ignition flush or whatever. The cost? $499. WHAT. THE. CHRIST. He recommended something else as well but said it wasn't necessary so I declined. He didn't push it, which is where the pleasant surprise comes in. I definitely expected to get totally taken for, but instead I just got gouged on labor costs. I'll take that. When I picked up the car later that day, I noticed on the receipt that the whole story I told the man at the counter was written in there. SO THEY DID LISTEN TO ME!!! That was a bit of a relief. Also, good memory, guys!!! Bottom line: they'll get the job done, it'll be done correctly and quickly, they won't try to upsell you or make you do unnecessary procedures but all of this will come at a huge labor cost. read more

In any case, I have never had a bad experience at the Carrboro location for Chapel Hill Tire Car Center as staff has always been both friendly and professional with prompt service and seemingly reasonable estimates/cost. They make it very easy to schedule an appointment (including online appointment requests) and have always worked with me to find a time that would work best. The free shuttle service that can take you wherever you need to be while your car is worked on (as well as bring you back to the shop) is a huge bonus that also comes in quite handy. I grew up in a small Southern town that's a lot like Chapel Hill. I love cars. When I was about 10 my mom would drop me off at a local garage (Ivy Esso) and I would watch the mechanics work on cars. Dan Wood handed me an old carburetor and said, "here ya go, rebuild this". Why do I tell you all of this? All you need to know about the Carrboro Location. If your car is more than 5 years old, and you bring it here for an inspection; SOMETHING is gonna be wrong with it. A friend of mine brought in his Jeep, and was told it needed a Wheel bearing- at $500. Jeeps do not have "Wheel Bearings", they have HUB bearings- and he had replaced the, "bad" one with a brand new one less than 3 days prior. Same guy watched a "Karen" go in with a new Tesla- and she was in and out for an inspection in 5 minutes- and the inspector never looked at her car! I know someone who brought a 1962 Thunderbird there for an inspection....they said it needed wheel bearings, headlights, and an Emergency brake adjustment. Over $1000 worth of parts and labor. And the interesting thing was , the mechanics mostly had no IDEA how to even BEGIN to replace the parts that they claimed were needed. I will not say that this place is a ripoff or a scam, but I will say that someone from the State needs to "inspect" their business practices. When you bring in a car with parts that you have bought, especially BRAND NEW tires, they will say that they cannot install them. Great and quick service! I was in and out within an hour for the oil change without an appointment. They were incredibly busy (I barely found a parking spot). There are refreshments there and waiting area, but I preferred to take a walk around carrboro. There are more than a dozen restaurants in 10 min walking distance from them.
