Beautiful winery. The wooden building is breathtaking. As others have said, it is a little trek driving up but you get beautiful views. Our tour guide was nice and friendly as well. There is no pressure to purchase their wine. Only negative is that I wished we could have toured the vineyards more. The tour and tasting is stated as 90 minutes but most of the time is sitting at the tasting table, which some might prefer I guess. read more

The views alone are worth the trip up Pritchard Hill all by themselves, but then combine them with a great tour, friendly and helpful staff, and wonderful wines and Chappellet offers the whole package! I think this is what heaven must be like. I held off on writing this review because I feared that my words could not truly do this place justice. But I don't know that I'll ever find quite the right words to describe Chappellet. I came here with great girlfriends a couple of weeks ago. It was the last stop on our Napa adventure... and we truly saved the best for last. I'm glad that we didn't have other plans after Chappellet, because I think I would have been underwhelmed by anything following this experience. Chappellet is located on Pritchard Hill. It's at the end of a long, winding road that seems to go on forever. But at the end of the road, there's a lovely reward. Just make sure that you have an appointment before you come. It would be unfortunate to make this long (albeit beautiful) drive if you don't have an appointment. Upon arrival, my group was warmly welcomed and provided a glass of the luscious Chenin Blanc. Now, Chappellet is best known for their incredible Cabernets. But the Chenin Blanc is delicious. Jennie took us on a tour of the facilities, which left me in awe. The main building blends modern style with lots of glass and wood, bringing the feel of the outdoors in. Wine barrels are used to create walls in the main building, and the tasting rooms are beautifully decorated with artwork from one of the talented members of the Chappellet family. Continuing on, we explored the impressive grounds, with acres and acres of grapes across rolling hills. The view from the vineyard is breathtaking, with mountains, lush greenery and pristine Lake Hennessy coming together to create a natural masterpiece. We tried so many different wines and I loved them all. And best of all, I was pleasantly surprised by the price points. So not only did we bring home a few bottles, but a couple of the gals in my group decided to become Members (myself included). The value here is pretty incredible. I can't wait to return to Chappellet very soon and enjoy more Chenin Blanc in the Member Meadow. read more

This winery was surprisingly gorgeous! Well worth it! I came to Napa on my honeymoon and my husband and I decided to tour this winery on a recommendation from a friend. Our tasting included a walking tour of the winery with a small group. Our tour guide was Josh and he was awesome!! He was very knowledgeable about the vineyards history, wine making process, Pritchard Hill, and extremely friendly. We were very glad to be on his tour. This vineyard sits on top of a hill and has great views of a nearby lake. It is also very unique; the main building is shaped like a pyramid. Most importantly they make very good wine. This is a must see winery that's off the beaten path. The next time I am in Napa this place is a must visit. read more

I loved everything about Chappellet. From the drive up past Lake Hennessey and up Pritchard Hill. The place seems like a Shangra-La when you finally get there. It's a cool property that's very elegant while remaining very down to earth. The tour was great and started in the library section of the barrel room with a video of the Chappellet's history of settling the land for the winery and raising their family there (set to Simon and Garfunkle's "America"). You tasted there and throughout the rest of the tour that went through the winery and barrel room and through the vineyards. All of the wines were top notch. The Chardonnay with fruit sourced from Carneros was excellent and had lots of bright fruit and acidity and just a little oak influence. The red wines are sourced from their vineyards on Pritchard Hill. We had a merlot that was definately a "cab drinker's" merlot. The Pritchard Hill Caberbet Franc was excellent. The Napa Cab was excellent and a steal at $42... it's about to hit WS with a 94 rating. And of course the famous Pritchard Hill Cab was out of this world. I bought a bottle of each of the cabs. All in all, for the price of most reserve tastings in Napa, you get that as well as a great tour. The tour definately lets you experience the winery and the wonderful panoramic views in the vineyards. We even got hello's from a few of the Chappellet's as they were doing some work on the solar panels. Highly recommended. read more

I have always enjoyed their wine but first trip to their winery! If you haven't been - the trek up the windy road is quite a feat! Excellent tour and tour guide! Wines are very wonderful! There are a few wines you can get locally but most of their wines, especially some of their Cabs, only at the winery or through their Club! They have an excellent Malbec and I bought a few bottles! if I wasn't flying back, I really would have bought more while I was visiting. The tasting is inside the winery near the barrels. I left a phone message at Chappellet Winery requesting an appointment to do a tasting. My telephone call was never returned. About three days later I kept calling and finally spoke with Stephanie. I explained to her that I wished to do a tasting. The only tasting available required a hike tour tasting, and it was only available Thursday at 10:30 AM. I re-arranged my tasting schedule with other wineries just to make this tasting. Three days before the scheduled tasting Stephanie emailed me to inform me that the tasting was being canceled due to the weather. I called and spoke with Stephanie and asked if I could still just taste the wines and added that as I explained from the beginning, I was not really interested in the hike, just interested in tasting the wine. Stephanie told me she could not accommodate me. The scheduled date of the day I was supposed to taste (Thursday, 11/10/22) turned out to be a nice sunny day. I myself work for a winery. Our winery would never give this LACK of customer service to any guest. To cancel a tasting three days before, for weather reasons, and then the day of the tasting turns out to be sunny, after I re-arranged my schedule just Chappellet. Chappellet customer service is NOTHING to be desired. I will never recommend anyone to Chappellet Winery again. read more

Not bad, but it was my least favorite winery we visited while in Napa/Sonoma. The wine and tasting was great, but we chose Chappellet because of the beautiful views and location as shown on the website and social media. However the tasting was in their cold cellar room (which is very cool to see) but not when it's 70 degrees and perfect weather outside. We asked where we could see these amazing views of the lake they overlook (again, as shown on their website and social media) and were told we couldn't go there. Just kind of frustrating because that's what we were hoping for along with the wonderful tasting. Not to sit in a cold room the whole time. read more

You probably don't care that I and my friends canceled our membership who have been a member with you for many years. Granted that I had more people showed up then what I reserved. I'm happy to paid for the extra people tasting, but how is that possible for you to charge our two designated driver just sitting in the room and didn't even taste any wine! This is unbelievable! According to their history on their website, how amazing it is, and last week, I got to meet Molly Chappellet, she comes to the winery daily, wow! Molly is the author of three books: A Vineyard Garden, the James Beard Award winning book that discusses her ideas from the earth for entertaining, gardening and life; The Romance of California Vineyards, authored with her daughter Carissa, features breathtaking photographs of the Napa Valley; and, Gardens of the Wine Country, co-authored with Richard Tracy takes you on an exclusive tour of the Napa Valley's most spectacular gardens.What and honor it was for me to meet her and talk to her about her passion after 4 decades of being here in the valley. Walking to the vineyards, you can see that they use solar panels on the roof to self sustain the electricity here. In 2008, Chappellet unveiled a 20,000-square-foot solar photovoltaic system that generates enough energy to offset 100 percent of the winery's electricity bill. Chappellet's entire Pritchard Hill vineyard was certified organic by CCOF in 2012; Chappellet also has an extensive onsite grape pomace composting program, producing approximately 400,000 pounds of compost each year. Are we there yet? After a long drive up the mountain road, past many unmarked signs, sure we were lost, we were rewarded with finding out we needed an appt. So we returned another day. The tour ended up being completely private, lasted one hour, included a visit to the vineyards . The wines were quite good, robust mountain wines. I look forward to drinking more of their wines in the future. The staff here, as far as my tour went, was excellent-- knowledgeable in many areas. read more

Date: March 21, 2007 Winery: Chappellet Winery Winemaker: Phillip Corallo-Titus Tasting: Tasting by Appointment Contact: 800.494.6379 This is not my first time visiting Chappellet atop Pritchard Hill, if I recall correctly, this is the third trip I took the drive up the hill. About four years ago on my first visit, the road wasn't completely paved all the way up to the winery, which is no longer the case. For some reason, although I've always enjoyed their wine (bought 2.5 cases on my first visit), I usually forgets to tell people to visit Chappellet while visiting Napa Valley. Close proximity to the big boys like Bryant and David Arthur, as well as new kids in Cloud View and Versant, definitely further validates the area's wine growing potential, which should be no news to anyone. All the wine starting from their bright and crisp Chenin Blanc to the Bordeaux styled P.H.E.V. Cabernet Sauvignon shows the common trait of balance. Tasting through six wines during my visit intending to take notes, well didn't quite happen as planned. The combination of a beautiful day outside (walked in the vineyard to the picnic table) and the two wonderful young ladies playing hostess, I closed up my notebook once we moved outside to finish the tasting. So, if you haven't been, go visit on your next trip to the valley! 2004 Dry Chenin Blanc Lots of sweet citrus on the nose, Meyer lemon comes to mind. A bit grassy on the palate with plenty of tangy citrus essence and a very slight hint of baby ginger. Good acidity on this wine, should go very well with crudo and other cold seafood plates. 2005 Napa Valley Chardonnay Sourced from Kelly Ranch in Carneros, 1/3 new French Oak, 100% malo. Tons of ripe pears dominates the aromatic along with some white floral notes. An easy drinking Chard that's doesn't exhibit the typical 100% malo characteristic of heavy oak and heavy butter. 2004 Merlot With 24% Cabernet and 1% Malbec, this Merlot bottling shows nice complexity, structure and adds a nice dimension to the wine. 2004 Signature Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 P.H.E.V. Cabernet Franc 2003 P.H.E.V. Cabernet Sauvignon As a side note, all these wine has been opened for about 20 hours, showing very well with no sign of oxidation. read more

Unfortunately the day we decided to go visit Chappallet was the first cloudy and rainy day of the year. Despite the drizzle, we drove up the winding road to Chappallet and eventually found our way to the tasting room. Word of advice is keep a close look out for the small signs that point you towards the winery, then the only way we could tell where to go was two purple flags by the entrance of the walking path that leads you to the winery. The inside of the building was quite a surprise, it's not like a normal winery, that is for sure. We were greeted by a nice woman sitting at a desk who checked us in for our appointment. Our tour guide was Gabe, and he was great. Very friendly, very informative, good sense of humor. We started off the tour in the front room and tried two of their chardonnay's. One went through half of malolactic fermentation and was crisp, like a green apple. The second one spent more time in oak and went all the way through malolactic fermentation. Very butterry, very good. I liked the second one better. We then went into the barrel room and walked around. The architecture of the building is very interesting, being designed by an artist and not an architecture. It's supposed to be a type of pyramid, to symbolize being part of the mountain of which it sits upon. Pretty cool, I guess. We then went outside to see the tanks, and we were supposed to go walk around the property, but it was cold and rainy out so we (as a group) decided to just go back in. We got to try two cabernet sauvignons, the malbec (which typically they do not taste on the tours), chenin blanc, and a very special treat, the 2002 Cabernet Franc from an opened magnum. The tour ends at a big table everyone sits down at to finish off the wines. Overall, the wines were very good. I was impressed. It's quite a trek to get up there, so make sure you are completely sober driving up that mountain, because it could get confusing. And make sure you book your appointment in advanced, because they will turn you away if you don't have one (on the way in, we passed two sad guys who got turned away because they didn't have an appointment... a very disappointing event after driving all the way up the mountain). read more

Solid Napa destination. It's a bit off the beaten path, but it's gorgeous. Still very Napa in sensibility. Wines are pretty good. It's tough for Napa wineries to stick out because in general they're over priced and young cab is...well...boring. Sorry folks, just the honest truth. And the whites. Gosh, the whites are beyond boring. Even wineries which think they balanced yet rich need to get out to Sonoma. This is a prime case in-point. They make sound wines outside their flagship wines, but they just aren't particularly interesting (not that's new for Napa). Here your certainly not being gouged (nor is it a deal either). Though not as "mountain fruit" as you might think (compared to Dunn etc). Though the private tasting is intimate and they are pretty knowledgeable and Cabs are pretty good. Tasting: 6 wines (2 whites, 3 cabs/blend, and a cab franc) Price: $25 Appointment: required Overall: Solid Napa winery, particularly the cabs. read more

I was part of a group of seven touring this winery for the very first time. The drive up was beautiful, and interesting, and just became part of the overall wonderful experience. This was my first-ever trip to Napa, and my first-ever true winery tour, but now that I'm home, with several wineries under my belt, I do think this was my favorite - and was a top pick from the whole group. The building and grounds are lovely and unique. It blends into the surroundings and just honors the beauty of the mountain. The aesthetics alone made for an enjoyable experience. Our tour guide, Jennie, was lovely and was super accommodating as our group arrived about 30 minutes late due to airport snafus. I figure she probably gives the same speech 500 times but it didn't come off that way. Personable, interested in learning about us and our tastes in wine, she provided a nice balance of giving us the rich family history of the winery, educated us about the process (so much more intricate than I could ever imagine) and really exuded a love of the wines and of the winery. It was great. I loved all of the wines we tasted. We were offered the Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, Cultivation, Cab Franc and Signature Cab Sauvignon. I could have bought them all. I was a little worried I was being the noob and falling in love a little too early without seeing what the rest of the Valley had to offer, but good wine is good wine, and I couldn't leave without buying. I ordered 2 Chenin Blanc, 1 Cultivation, 2 Zinfandel, and 1 Signature Cab. I'd absolutely recommend this place and I'd definitely return. read more

Finding Chappellet was NOT easy. Our navigation was simply useless on that Sage Road, and don't look for any large signs for the winery. There is a small sign on a group of mailboxes that says Pritchard Hill. Go up there. It's like just about opposite a dock area on the small lake across the way. Head up a steep hill. The road can be narrow, but after Kuleto, it felt spacious. The winery is just very cool. The building is unusual in shape, and we just loved the layout. This is the type of place you have to have a reservation for. Although this was our number one tour spot in terms of making sure we get there, they didn't have our reservation. It's entirely possible the person that made it for us screwed up, but either way, Chappellet was incredibly gracious and found someone to give us a tour. It ended up being a private tour for us! Jennie was just great. We not only enjoyed the tour, the wines were excellent. We liked their Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay even before we got their reds, which is what they are known for. The reds were quite good. Couldn't help but join their club. Between, Trefethen, Venge and Chappellet, hard to pick our true favorite. We have loved all three. read more

One of the highlights of my trip. I was turned on to them by my local wine store. They are by appointment only, but the appointment doesn't just get you a tasting, it gets you a very informative tour and history of the place... In the end, all of that means nothing of the wines suck... well, they don't. Everything is well balanced. Nothing is too big, too much alcohol, or even too predictable... the wines were subtle but delicious... elegant but unique in their own way. I'm now a club member! read more

The drives to and back from Chappellet are already big pluses. The tour guide walked us from their "pyramid" out to the fermentation area and through the vineyards. Pritchard Hill is really something special. We learned a lot about mountain winemaking. The wines are great too. All are reasonably priced unlike many others on the valley floor. In addition to the Signature Cab which is sublime, two other wines that are worth mentioning are Zinfandel and Mountain Cuvee (Cultivation). Tip - spare about half an hour to 45 minutes for the journey up the hill. It's not that difficult but there are hardly any signs. If you are late, they will proceed without you and you don't want to miss a thing! read more

Good tour and tasting at a very beautiful winery on Pritchard Hill. My boyfriend and I visited Chappellet about a month ago on a weekday morning. The winery seemed to be a little out of the way from the main large wineries in Napa valley but it was pretty easy to find using the directions they had provided. Also, the drive was really scenic. We were greeted by Kelsey who I had made the reservation with. Then we were split into smaller groups, each with a guide. The tour was pretty casual, which we liked - the guide (who I can't remember the name of) talked about the history of the winery itself as well as the people behind it. It was interesting to learn that the winery has always been run by one whole family. We sampled about five wines throughout the tour, gradually making our way outside where the grapes are grown. I'm not a wine expert by any means but the wines tasted great (my favourite was the Zinfandel, although they are known for their Cabernet Sauvignons) and the vineyard was so pretty! There is also a special picnic spot that overlooks the nearby lake and vineyard, but since it is only reserved for club members we didn't get to see it. Although we really enjoyed our time here, we would probably not come back since there are so many other wineries in Napa valley to explore. Also, since we were coming from Canada we couldn't purchase a membership (they only ship within the US) but we did buy a bottle for some friends. Note: tours and tastings are expensive ($45 per person) and must be reserved in advance by calling or emailing and a credit card is required. THIS IS A MUST SEE WINERY!!!! Not only does the wine get better and better with all the new shipments that are sent out to the wine club members, the staff are always on top of your needs! Wine Ambassador, Katie, was exceptional when there was a mixup with my wine order when I first joined and went above and beyond to make sure I carried a grin on my face when thoughts of Chappellet were in the air. It takes a lot for me to join a wine club however, after only one visit to a winery I was hooked. Every varietal that was in the tasting room experience was exceptional and I dont think I have ever tasted any other vineyards where EVERY WINE was exceptionally mouthwatering and delicious! If the delectable taste of the wine doesn't hook you, the views will leave you in a jaw dropping awe leaving you wanting to just stand there and stop time. When my friend Lee Anne and I visited here, Dan Santos took us on a vineyard walk where we experienced the workers, during harvest, crushing the grapes and a nice view of Oprah Winfrey's mansion on the hill over the distance! A hidden gem and a must-see. My husband and I made the scary; fall-off-the-cliff drive up to Chappellet on the strong recommendation of many friends. We didn't regret a minute. We visited in December and the winds were too strong to tour the grounds but we still had an amazing time sampling the wine and learning about the winery. The wines were fantastic, as expected, but what made our experience truly memorable was our host, Pascal. He made us feel welcome and was able to imbue the perfect combination of knowledge and warmth. (This can be rare in the area, where snootiness is sadly often valued over quality at many wineries!). Hubby and I make it a point to try a new winery every time we visit, so on a friend's recommendation we made an appointment here. The tour was very enjoyable--especially the stunning views and rolling vineyards from the top of Pritchard Hill. Our tour guide Natalie was a fellow Cal alum (Go Bears!) and easy-going, knowledgable and chatty. Apparently her family owns Hurley restaurant in Yountville. So she grew up in the Valley. The Chappellet family has a charming story and apparently the whole family, down to the grandkids, are involved. The red wines themselves weren't as impressive as I'd hoped. A bit young-tasting for my palate. I did like the Chenin Blanc as a tasty summery alternative to Sauvignon Blanc. And even though we bought several bottles, they did not waive the tasting fee. Chappellet - Vineyards as far as the eye can see on Pritchard Hill at the Chappellet Winery! - Wineries Near Me - Saint Helena, California

This was one of our favorite wineries from our last visit to Napa! My favorite part was how small and intimate the experience was - I even feel guilty yelping it because I want it to remain amazing and untouched by mass tourism. Getting there - Allow a lot of time to drive up the winding roads. We were running a little behind and it was super stressful to navigate our way there. Look at their website before you leave because they are not joking when they say that GPS does not work up there. Tour - Our guide was one of the founders sons and his passion for good wine really showed through. I loved listening to him explain both the business (they are adding on to the facilities) as well as the wine. He was also super generous with the tasting portions. Love! View - absolutely breathtaking! Plan to spend some time taking pictures throughout the vineyard and of the lake. This is one of the best spots to get pictures in Napa. We did end up buying a bottle and signing up for their wine club. I could not be happier with my decision. We have also seen their wines in a few shops in the Twin Cities. We usually snatch up a bottle and remember our trip fondly read more

Our first trip to Napa... Our friends told us Chappellet was a "must see"... How true! Beautiful vineyards, Dramatic architecture... Stunning views, One with the environment, Friendly Hostess.... and Wonderful and delicious wines!... So glad we took the time to find it (not easy)... High up on a hill overlooking a lake and Napa Valley... Cell service is poor so bring written directions. We toured several wineries in Napa and Sonoma... and although this was our last stop after four days of tastings.... this was tied for first place on our list! Definitely will return... My husband and I were out for drinks at Andaz and met Kelsey from Chappellet winery. She poured us a glass of pinot noir and viognier and we were hooked. A few weeks later I made a visit to the winery with some friends and we had an incredible time! The winery is interesting to try to find, but definitely worth the search. I loved everything about this place from the crazy front door, to the beautiful art and most important, the delicious wine. Our tour was fun and we sampled so many wines. Very generous pours and great selection of wines. We all loved the merlot and cab franc the best! It was a little chilly during our tasting, but everything else was fantastic! read more

When you're bored of the main strip, and Silverado Trail wineries, it's time to head for the hills. One of the best places tucked away up there, located somewhere off Sage Canyon Rd in Rutherford is Chappellet Winery. Chappellet is an established icon here in Napa, with a family that's still actively involved in the business. They have been making some killer wines for a long time, and do tastings by appointment, so call ahead. When you finally reach the windy top of the mountain, park your car and take a walk around. They offer some expansive views that are hard to rival. Once inside, you'll sit down for an intimate tasting in their barrel room. I had the Zinfandel, Chardonnay, and Pritchard Hill Cabernet (the best of the bunch). I have a feeling if I could dive into their library wines, there would be much to rave about. Another cool thing is that they're 100% off the grid, powered by a big solar panel array. read more

I enjoy visiting Chappellet. Besides the different feel and views on top of Pritchard Hill which are excellent on their own, they make really good wines. I especially enjoys their cabs. The downside is that reservations are often difficult to come by and their high end wines are quite pricey. But it's a nice experience no matter how you slice it. read more

The wines are better than the tour. If you came here for an enological lesson, forget about it. What they do offer is a leisurely stroll through the barrel room and vineyards while you sip on some of their wines. Given the provenance of the soil, stature of their neighbors and the history of the winery, you'd think this place would have a lot more to offer than nice vistas. For the price of admission our group of four paid, we could have skipped this place altogether and just buy a few bottles from the local shop. read more
