This is the BEST place in the Houston area to get Gyro. It's always fresh, loaded with Gyro meat and the pita is delicious. Truly a gem hidden in Deer Park. I noticed on some of the other reviews that people have commented on the ambiance being outdated or dirty. If you have ever been to Chicago and eaten at one of the many "Gyro" stands, ambiance is not part of the deal. It's all about the food, and part of the charm is the old building, retro booths, etc. We have plenty of cookie cutter chain restaurants here in Houston. Char burger has character and history. As far as the people that have commented on the lady behind the counter being rude, you shouldn't publicly call anyone a profane name. If you are a regular there, you may have noticed that they had a sympathy card displayed for the loss of their daughter. So, here's the deal. I love the food here. But, the owner/operator is the rudest person I've ever met. The counter person is his mother and he yells at her CONSTANTLY!! Yes, they are Greek, but I don't care about the "Greek culture". You just don't do that!! It's disrespectful! And I've heard it for the last time. While eating my frozen tasteless burger I had the joy of watching two roaches crawl across my table. Oh did I mention that the food is horrible. I have been going to Char Burger since junior high! The gyros are to die for as are the chocolate shakes. The fries are aaaaamazing! I could go on and on! We use to meet there every Friday for lunch, and I completely miss those days! I wish there were places like this where I live now. The same family has owned it the entire time I have been going. I had to go check this out since it's so close to my home. Let me say, I will not be going back. The lady who takes the orders looked as if she didn't want to be there and was not friendly at all. I ordered the Gyro, onion rings and an ice tea. Came to just over 10 dollars. The gyro was just ok, tasted like one you would get at the mall. You can get a much better gyro a few blocks down the street. The kicker was the onion rings. They had been precooked, when you order them they drop them back in the grease to reheat them. In town visiting the Battleship Texas and decided to check out Char Burger. We got the 1/2 pound burger with cheese special. A little expensive but it was pretty damn good. The burger had a nice char to it and the flavor was nice. The large steak fries were also good, I usually like them wherever I go. The reason it's not a 5 star is over something kind of small but extremely easy... I asked for no buns on either meal and ended up with buns...smh. They don't have lettuce to wrap the burger which was fine, I get that, but I don't get why they still put it on buns... seems like a waste to me since we threw them away. read more

This place is great, it has been run by the same family for the last 40 years. They treat you like family when you come in and the service is top notch. All the food is excellent but the stand outs for me are the Gyros, shakes and Jalapeno poppers. Also the portion sizes are large you will not leave hungry. read more

Any place that can make it 45 years deserves at least two stars. The smell when we walked in was rather, ah, sewer-like and as such put me off on the food. The AC seemed to be struggling and the french fries and onion rings tasted like very old oil was still being used. The "char" burger must have a different meaning than "well cooked" as the burgers seemed borderline undercooked. Mold (?) growing on the ceiling A/C duct wasn't helping things, either. Family owned and operated, my husband has been going since he was a boy. It's literally around the corner from us, so when it's a quick drive through kind of night, this is our go to place. We always get the same thing: Charburger basket with a cherry coke. The bracket comes with steak fries and 2-3 onion rings. When we're feeling especially hungry, we'll get a side of onion rings. Ok guys keep in mind that this review is for the gyro basket only. That damn thing is so freaking good I haven't wanted to eat anything else there. I've tried all the gyros in my area and this one to me is head and shoulders above the rest. It's my go to dinner when I'm working nights. I'll pick it up on the way to work and eat the fries and drink the cherry coke on the way. I save the gyro for later that night. The fries are wide and thick. I know they are probably frozen but there is just something about them. Even my wife, who never likes what I like, loves their fries. That's why I usually only get it going to work because she eats all my fries. They still make old school cherry cokes too. Not that premixed crap you get everywhere else. You like extra cherry, and daddy does, just ask. The ice is special too. I know what you're thinking, come on Bruce, ice really? Really, it's that soft fine crushed ice I just don't get anywhere else. You don't know what you don't know. If you've never had it, then you don't know. The straw and the lid come off and I eat the ice as I drink. Now the gyro is big enough to be a meal on its own. I swear they load that puppy up with so much meat you would swear they are trying to hide something in there. It's just meat onions and tomatoes. Add that creamy tzatziki sauce and you've got heaven wrapped in a pita. I'm not ashamed to say I've eaten them 2 nights in a row on a few occasions, but I try to draw the line at 3. 3 in a row and I think I have a problem. I don't have a problem. I can quit anytime. Char burger has always been one of my favorite places in Deer Park. I was looking forward to eating there and arrived at 8:36 PM. I was told that the only way we could order food there was if we got it to go. They close at 9 PM. That is the ultimate in laziness and a lack of concern for customers. I will not go back. Well I would first like to say I am not one to post bad reviews. But I defiantly believe in posting my honest opinion even when it is bad. Today my son and I went for lunch to try this place out, because I had been told how good the burgers were here. Boy were we disappointed the burgers tasted like frozen patties grilled over a fire Grill. The fries were good and hot but the onion rings were still doughy. Not to mention I had to kill a roach climbing on the back of my chair. Than the tables in the dining area were never wiped down after each customer. I saw it happen twice while we were there. For $20 bucks for a bacon burger basket and a cheese burger basket with two drink. I'd rather go to Mooyahs, whataburger, Mc Donald's, or even just eat at home. Hope they read reviews and clean up the roaches, dusty air vents and other things could be updated here so they can succeed longer in business. read more

Worst place ever. Customer service was horrible. The lady taking orders is a straight bitch and the guy cooking is a bigger bitch then her. I ordered steak fingers and they tried to give me chicken fingers. I went with a group of 4 and everyone ordered steak fingers as well. I told her I didn't order chicken and she insisted i did. I had them change it and oh man that took her bitch meter to a whole new level and the cook as well, like if its so hard to drop a few steak fingers in oil and just use the same sides.
