This burger joint, located in Deer Park, is almost a hole in the wall. The interior is nothing much to look at, but there are a few tables to sit at. The exterior lists all the unique burgers like "the Greek" or "Tortilla Burger" The person who took our order was also one of the cooks, and he might also be the owner. He was a bit of a character, and wasn't partially warm or inviting The main menu when you order really only had a handful of options listed, which was surprising when there are several listed outside. Its sort of a strange protocol in that they take your order, they write it on a to-go bag, they give you a number to mentally remember (nothing written down), and then when you pull out money to pay they say you'll pay when you pick up your food The food is made-to-order, and honestly took longer than I expected. The food was fine. The burger was tasty, and the fries were good, but it wasn't anything special. It really wasn't too filling, which surprised us. This place has been opened since 1970, think of the history held in this tiny business. I lived in the area in the 90's and ate here regularly. It was good then, and still just as good. The 1/4 pound burger came out with a tomato slice, leaf lettuce, chopped onions, pickle slices and a smear of mustard on both buns. The patties are hand pressed, not smashed, pressed. The beef was good and not too fatty. That being written, my patty was a little too well done for me. But it still has a great char taste. The fries were regular fries and not much to talk about. However, the onion rings were very delicious. They're homemade not store bought and well worth it. Service was good and quick. Came here with my husband, 5 yo and 1 yo for lunch. My husband was ordering and my 5 yo daughter was looking at the fish tank, and the man behind the counter stated yelling at our daughter ("Hey kid! Come here!") to finish her order. My husband tried to diffuse the situation, and he kept shouting. I immediately said "we're not eating here" and we walked out. Used to be fantastic until the owner died. Now the burgers & fries are substandard. The gyros used to be stellar, but I haven't had one since we saw rats walking on the stove and on top of the refrigerator like they own the place. If you look back into the kitchen, you can plainly see dark greasy trails on the walls where the rats routinely climb. I know rat trails when I see them. If this doesn't dissuade you, I do recommend carrying out, unless you don't mind listening to them bicker and fight with each other while you eat. read more

Gyros are the only ones even worth a look in Deer Park(there are 6 restaurants that offer) ....hours are quirky due to a small family (only 3 "employees" owners- 2 sons and Mother who pops in from time to time.) you"ll always find them for lunch mon-sat 11-2, and dinner most eves 430-730. Today was my first time to Char Burger. The parking lot was empty, so I was at first concerned that either they weren't open, or they weren't very good. I was wrong on both counts. They were, in fact, open. Several patrons came in with all but 1 getting orders to go. The interior of the building reminded me of an old fashioned burger place. It was dated, but clean and a bit nostalgic. I ordered a cheese burger with some onion rings. I had to wait a bit because they cook everything to order. The burger had a great flavor, and the onion rings were fantastic. I do wish I'd ordered a double meat cheeseburger because the patties were on the small side - I'm guessing 1/4 lb. The only criticism I have is the person making my drink scooped my cup through the ice machine - a big no-no in restaurants. For sanitation reasons they should always use an ice scoop. I'm not a germaphobe so I didn't worry about it, but it details like that that can lead to issues with inspectors or getting customers sick. I am going to take away three stars for a very specific reason. This place is a hole in the wall burger joint, looks like it been here for years, and its run by a local family. That being said, you go to these places expecting a hand formed, thick, juicy burger. Nope - you get a pre-formed, frozen(?), hockey puck cooked on an electric skillet (with fake grill marks). It wasn't bad, but if I wanted that, I'd go to a chain. I had high hopes for Deer Park's burger landmark. I was expecting fresh burgers, fresh and plentiful toppings for said burgers and some delicious homemade fries. What we got instead was bland burgers with absolutely no sauce of any kind, watery chili-cheese fries with overcooked potatoes. I ordered their regular char-burger all the way- with lettuce, tomatoes and onions and although we ordered mayo, they included no mayo and no mustard either so the burger was super dry. The patty also wasn't seasoned well and besides the texture, I couldn't tell the difference between the hamburger patty and the bun. The french fries tasted like oil that hasn't been replaced in quite some time and my fries were soggy. Ok so I got an hour for lunch and I am thinking I haven't had a gyro in a while. This place is 10 minutes away, and I know not there fault so it's good. I order a gyro with tots and a coke and sit. 20 minutes and I and thinking wow where did my lunch hour go? They call my order and I notice hmm no tots, but I got to go so I pay for my food and leave , then I notice the fries I got are the only thing remotely warm on this platter. Typical dive places are normally family run like this place. The family that owns this place are Greeks. If you are not familiar with the Greek culture you may be offended by them but I didn't find anything wrong with the people who work here like many other reviewers. I had the 1/2 pound burger and it was good. My co-worker had the gyro and Oh. My. Gosh! She let me try the meat and it was perfect! Hands down the best gyro meat I have had in all of Texas. I absolutely love this place!! I can remember back 30yrs ago, to when I was 4yrs old & my parents would take us here to eat dinner & drink malts.
