Burger was average, the pork sandwich I bit & threw out. By the way I almost eat anything. The wife was the winner with the " steak sandwich" which was just a bigger burger. Fries I will give kudos for crispy & hot. Soda had so much ice & maybe a quarter of the cup had actual soda. Not sure about refills as we were in drive up. Tried it I am done. Great Place!!! My wife and I just love the staff at the Clayton location... They are great, they treat you like you are a part of their family.... Every time we are there they make sure our order is correct and they always cook our burgers to perfection! They have excellent burgers and we love their chicken sandwiches!! I've never understood the cult of Char Grill. And it's not like I have something against fast food. The only thing I can think is that most of the memories people have of this place are from 30 years ago, when everything was better, even McDonalds. The prices are high for what you get. The burgers here are definitely on the dry-ish side. They're cooked well. The chili here is bland, and the slaw is decent. Fries are crispy for a very short period of time, and are always fresh and salty. I'd say the only thing here that really shines is the staff. They are generally very polite and welcoming. 4* on the service. 3* for the food. If you have the option, go to a Cook Out instead. They have them beat on flavor and value. read more

To be fair, this review isn't based on the food. I recently visited this location for a mid afternoon snack. I approached the counter to place my order. There was an older gentleman behind the counter back to the right in what I am assuming is a food prep area. He was dutifully wearing his plastic gloves, but he was eating while wearing them. I used to work in restaurants. I know people get hungry when they work. I just can't believe he thought it was a good idea to apparently be working on food prep and eating. What a joke! I haven't been to McDonald's in 10 years but I'm pretty sure I just ate off the dollar menu there at char-burger! The lady was very unfriendly and half the food my kids won't eat because it was gross or covered in salt. $35 for junk! Keep looking for a place to eat read more

Today's experience made me cringe. Ordered our food and watched as one of the prep cooks used her cell phone with her work gloves on. She than, without changing them proceeded to touch buns, tomatoes and assemble orders. **Cell phones are full of germs and fecal matter.** (I mean we know people use their phones in the bathroom, but how often are they disinfected.) I've been going to Char-Grill for years in Raleigh so it was a pleasant surprise to get one out in Clayton. For those who have been to other Char-Grill locations, you will appreciate not having to fill out the little slip to order. Though, there is some nostalgia now missing, the updated order taking method is faster. Burgers are excellent. Be sure to study the menu and ask questions of you need clarification. There are Hamburger steak sandwiches and regular burgers. They also make a great grilled Chicken sandwich. For picky kids, there are chicken tenders. The shakes, as Amy pointed out in her review are different than other shakes. More so, they are different than the location on Hillsboro street location. More like a Frosty from Wendy's. I've been there 3 times since they opened. It's a very basic menu, Burgers, Fries, Onion rings, drinks. Great Food! Best burgers in Clayton. My wife and I love it. It's our burger joint! The location is kind of hidden, it's set back from the hwy a little bit so you can easily overlook it. My wife and I stopped in for lunch while Christmas shopping. The service was outstanding and a much needed relief after the typical Christmas time customer service shortcomings. We had never been to a Char-Grill before and as we were looking over the menu board we decided on 2 hotdogs for me and a grilled chicken sandwich for her and we debated over splitting an order of chili cheese fries. I told my wife that they never look as good as they do in the picture and are often soggy greasy and disappointing. The man at the counter overheard our discussion and assured us they would be great and that he personally would make them. When we got our order we found them to be outstanding and maybe even better than the picture depicted. All of the food was great. In fact my hotdogs were so good that I made my wife try one of them. They were so good that after taking one bite she said "oh my god" a phrase I have never heard her use before. They serve Bright Leaf hot dogs and chili a true Carolina dog. I wouldn't be inclined to eat here, but my family of 6 stopped in for a quick lunch due to its close proximity to the highway, as they were heading home after a weekend visit. Mistake! Again, having never been before, once I started ordering (for everyone), the snarky, young cashier apparently took issue with my not knowing you need to include what condiments go on the sandwich as you order. I turned back to get that info, then, when it seemed she got confused about where we left off and I suggested we start from the beginning, she rudely said, "I got it already!" I guess that antiquated notion of 'customer service' doesn't apply in a fast food store. (??) I was shocked when the total was near $70! WHAT?! For SMALL burger, chicken & pork sandwiches & fries??! Our number was called and we picked up our food from the window (haphazardly thrown into two bags). My dad took his first bite of a horrible pork sandwich and almost cut his gum open on a near two inch sharp, shard of bone! I took it back to the counter and the manager was told. They made us a new one (which we gave to the dogs out in the car) and the manager gave us a $5 gift cert, with her apologies adding, "these things are beyond our control." I looked at the receipt, and it seems Miss Rude Cashier SHOULD have accepted my request to begin my order again, as she charged us for an additional chicken sandwich meal (almost TEN addl $$!) I visited this newly opened Char-grill and you cannot compare it to the other Char-gill's. The meat on the sandwich is very thin. I have been to several locations and the meat they place on the other Char-grill's is huge. A lot more meatier. I didn't really like the way the fries were cooked. They were a little brown. I'm not used to fries cooked that well done. The taste of the sandwich was pretty good. The only reason I have it three stars is because they do offer WIFI. However when I tried to get on their WIFI it would not slow me access. I guess this compensates for the meat lose. Of you want a meatier sandwich visit the other locations in Raleigh and Durham, NC. The atmosphere was pretty cool. I just can't believe how much meat they removed from their sandwiches when you are used to Char-grill sandwiches having a nice size amount of meat. My husband and I went there right after they opened a few years ago. Food was awful. We chalked it up to their being so busy upon just opening. We decided to try it again yesterday, and when we walked in the door, a younger girl who was cooking greeted us kindly and with a smile. I had my wisdom teeth removed several days earlier, so I smiled back and waved to acknowledge her greeting. I didn't say much, as I was pretty sore still. An absolute immature, juvenile younger boy didn't hear me apparently, so he blatantly turned around to face her and said loudly, " I'M GREAT, HOW ARE YOU!!????" He then turned back around and looked at me laughing. I right then and there decided we weren't eating there, and that we would never eat there again. We turned around and walked out and went to the Japanese restaurant across the shopping strip. I understand that the majority of their employees are younger kids, but seriously...when I had my first job, I was smart enough to know that mocking your customers wasn't a good idea. I already knew how great Char Grill was so I was very excited when I learned that it was going to open in Clayton, NC. The Chargrilled burgers have that great flavor, the french fries are great and you get your own drinks and refills. The service is great and it is always clean. I really like the fact that this one has an eat-in dining room as opposed to some of the other locations that I have been too. Would recommend to anyone. Beats other fast food restaurants. read more

I went to college at NC State and have eaten very often at the locations on Hillsborough St and the one beside Rex Hospital....so, when I learned about the new Chargrill in Clayton beside my parents home, I was excited to eat there again after several years. Boy, were we all beyond disappointed! I remember hand pattied burgers that were thick & juicy with a charred flavor. These burgers were flat and perfectly round like they came out of a frozen package. No juice, no taste. Even my parents, who never complain about anything food wise, commented on how different their burger was from memory of past burgers at this chain. My mother could barely finish hers. What happened to Chargrill??? We might as well have bought from McDonalds. Don't waste your time. read more
