RECOMMENDED I recently visited Charcoal Grill in Burlington, Wisconsin with clients; I had an enjoyable time there. The food is excellent; I had a Brau Burger with cheese and fried onions on a Kaiser roll. The burger was charcoal-grilled to perfection: juicy and tender, and with plenty of flavour. There is also a 'fix-it' bar where you can get all the toppings you want for your burger, including lettuce, tomatoes, onions (red and white), pickles, and pickle spears. Everything was fresh and tasty. Our waitress was friendly and attentive, without hovering; she brought our drinks and our orders very quickly and was very nice to us. I'm sorry but I don't remember her name. I ordered an Arnold Palmer and it was really refreshing to enjoy this during the hot summer weather. The interior decor is somewhat industrial-chic I guess; I suppose it is popular with some people. The restaurant was very clean; the carpark and the grounds were absolutely spotless. As a young man, this place was new, and it used to be a treat to go to. My buddy suggested it and I thought, hey, why not? Let's try it again. When I walked in and seen that they had no more alcohol, I knew this wasn't a good sign. The saving grace for this place was the waitress. She was a hard-working, friendly, helpful employee. I have to say, this place reminded me of a sick person in the hospital, dying, and it's only a matter of time before it's over. The waitress started out with saying there's no rotisserie chicken today. Another bad sign. I ordered a burger because I wanted that charcoal flavor that they promote. My buddy got a grilled chicken sandwich. I opted for soup because it was a healthier option than fries. I got their version of a patty melt, and the onions and bread kind of tasted "off." Old and rehashed beyond its days type "off." I eventually stripped both off of the sandwich, and went in for the burger. The burger had a strong cow taste, and I'm not saying that in a good way. The soup was edible, but nothing great. I used to love this place as a kid. Now, as I aged, so has the Charcoal Grill. They are a very sick patient, I suggest a DNR order be put in place for this patient. It was so bad that they probably should just step on this patient's feeding tube, and be done with the misery. I will not be back and I do not suggest anyone visit for the first time. It is a shell of its once decent quality and needs a resurrection. I've eaten here a couple of times, usually late in the evening for a snack. The service is fast and friendly, and there's plenty of seating. Use caution approaching the place as the entrance by the railroad tracks is tricky. I have yet to have a main course, because I get sidetracked by the appetizers and usually end up sharing a few small plates. I'm a sucker for bacon-wrapped water chestnuts, and I rarely find them. The oriental glaze is potent and tasty (and you can't go wrong with bacon and the crunch of the water chestnut). The walleye fingers and tartar sauce are quite good, but sometimes a little fishy - if that's a concern for you, go with the cod. Cheese bites are fantastic. I'll have to return sometime to check out more of the menu, but I'm looking forward to it. read more

I have to say, Charcoal Grill has one of the best fish fries in Southeastern Wisconsin. I've been to a lot of fish fries (mostly taverns and small establishments). I didn't expect the delicious fish fry that we had Friday night. I chose the cod fish fry (all you can eat for $18). The coleslaw is phenomenal, and the french fries were crispy and delicious. You can choose from either Panko breaded, beer battered, or baked. I chose the beer battered, and the pieces of fish were huge. I had trouble eating the first three I didn't need to order anymore. The fish was flaky, tender, and delicious. The staff was cordial and very polite. They made sure that you were completely satisfied. We haven't been here in quite some time, and they've definitely improved since the last time. Our server, Riley, was super kind and on top or everything we needed. They skimmed down their menu a bit, but there's still way too many options. They made nice changes though, so you can tell they use less items and things can hopefully be a bit more fresh. Biggest things we loved: Their spinach and artichoke dip is now thicker/creamier and comes in a bread bowl, and it's delicious. They may have changed their bread recipe too because the bread was wonderful. They had a nice specialty cocktail menu and the blueberry mules were wonderful. The dessert menu was a nice touch, and the door County cherry chocolate cake was a huge hit with my fiancé. Their bacon wrapped water chestnuts are still the best, and that Korean sauce is amazing. HOWEVER, they no longer offer the option to get them in one or two dozen. Huge bummer. My fiancé got the Rueben burger, and said it was good but a LOT. He said that the burger meat was excellent, and so were all the Rueben toppings! Just too much for him personally all together. This place is so nice! Huge big windows with river and railroad views, train themed decor reflecting the historical Central Wisconsin Depot nearby. Still frequent freight trains to enjoy. The service is fast, fun, friendly, and we are always treated kindly and generously. The restaurant is clean and inviting with super clean restrooms, too. Nice bar area with lots of windows and creative landscaping. Games are available at the bar. The food is prepared fresh and always appropriately hot or cold. My husband loves the peasant lunch. I often choose the pulled pork sandwich and add pickles and peppers from the burger bar loaded with unique and normal condiments for dressing up your sandwich just how you like it. The sweet potato fries are terrific. The server recommended the tater tots as a side to my son, and he was glad she did. They serve New Glarus ales and beers here, including Spotted Cow, only available in Wisconsin. The bartender makes a fantastic brandy old fashioned. A full range of cocktails available. But for non-drinkers the raspberry lemonade is delicious and refillable, the unsweet tea is fresh and delicious. We eat here often. read more

Delicious!! Took a road trip to Browns Lake. We decided to drive to town for lunch. I heard good things about this place. So we gave it a try. Before I go on, I do have one negative comment. We ordered soft drinks and ice tea. Not once did anyone offer to refill them for us. I wonder if that is a restaurant policy. Now the good. We had burgers with fries and onion straws. The burgers were cooked exactly as requested by us. I like the burger bar for its variety of condiments. I love barbecue sauce and mayonnaise on my burgers. They had exactly what I want. Also the "bar" had lettuce, tomato, onions, peppers, and a variety of yummy pickles. Other than not getting refills on our drinks, The service was good. The price was right. Stingy people. Charged me $2.90 for a plain soda water. Let me restate that... soda water. Well, it was strange experience. The waiter,Michael was amazing but the manager made no sense. I ask for a charcoal burger but with the possible patty. While they were making it I was told it would be a $4 up charge. I said charge me for the impossible burger which is $13 not $18 for the charcoal burger. The manager said no because it messes up their inventory? The only difference was four onion straws. So for four onion straws I got charged $4 extra on top of the $14 charge for the charcoal burger. Margherita flatbread and martini both delicious. Flatbread must have sat for a while because it was barely room temperature. Asked for extra basil, but that did not happen. Jul-22 : Server - Jordynn. Ordered walleye fingers and clam chowder. Walleye was served hot, and was delicious; large order, took some home. Clam chowder was good, but not hot. Server was pleasant. Jul-29 : Another Friday, nothing to complain about. Good food, hot food was hot, drinks were cold, good patrons at the bar. Aug-6 : Brought my brother and sister-in-law with me. Discovered after we sat down and ordered drinks that their air-conditioning was not working. No fans on the customers, only fans on the bartender (which was not enough, felt sorry for her). Brother's walleye had so many bones that it became impossible to eat, his stack of bones was higher than his stack of fries. Sister-in-law had to order three times because the first two orders came back "we don't have any today". Disappointing. She ended up with chicken wings, which she liked. Aug-19 : Server - Sarah. Let's face it, we have limited options when it comes to quick-know-what to expect chain restaurants here in Burlington. Because of this, we find ourselves eating at Charcoal Grill more often than I'd like. Usually we end up here by default because we either don't want to drive outta the zip code, or don't want to spend a ton of money at a more upscale restaurant for dinner/lunch...whatever. And I know some people detest chains, but they serve a purpose - they are consistent, predictable and affordable. Although I'm never particularly excited to eat here, when we do eat here the food is always good. I know that my usual (chicken tacos) will taste good. And the waitresses are always friendly...always. We have never had an issue with poor service at this location. So, although I'm never excited about this place (sorry, Charcoal Grill!! It's not you, it's me), I'm gonna go with 4 stars because they have never screwed up my food (even when I do decide to step outta my rut of chicken tacos) and the wait staff is always super friendly and very attentive. read more

Every time I est here I feel like my clothes smell like the restaurant smells after leaving. The food here is mediocre, all the usual American fair. Burgers are decent here, but I can only really recommend the appetizers during happy hour. I've heard from several soirces that the charcoal grill is preventing other businesses in Burlington from obtaining their liquor license and has been doing so for some time. While it's not something I can say for sure it wouldn't surprise me as it's been infamously hard to get a liquor license in town since they opened. Charcoal Grill has a diverse menu with several fresh options. My boyfriend got the french dip which was enormous and super tasty. I had the chicken and dumplings soup which wasn't all that traditional, but still really good and a yummy salad with cranberries, walnuts and blue cheese.
