So it's always a pleasant surprise when you go to a restaurant serving up stuff you haven't really seen before. Chicken kebabs, with a Caesar salad...with Chinese style sheep organ soup? That's the kinda stuff you can get at Charcoal Kebab House, a Xinjiang restaurant located in Scarborough. Xinjiang is in northwest China and is made up of many ethnic minorities within that region, explaining the interesting menu. It's also a very nice restaurant, despite the outside looking kinda sketch. The food was great! You know it's popular when you roll in for a late lunch at 1PM and the place is still full of people. They've got great kebab combos at a good price. Keep in mind these aren't tiny kebabs (like skewers at a night market), these were big boy kebabs on metal sticks. The Chicken Kebabs were extremely juicy and tender, some of the best chicken I've had. The Caesar salad and bread it comes with were an odd pairing (given the rest of the Chinese style items on the menu), but tasty so I won't question it. My favourite was the Sheep Giblet Soup, very surprisingly. Went to this place with some friends for their authentic kababs. It's a small place hidden in a tiny plaza along with some grocery stores and other restaurants. The restroom seems to be downstairs and was broken during our visit, which is a huge inconvenience. But overall the vibe is chill with a candle on each table and some carpets and fun texts on the wall. We ordered a Chicken Kebabs combo, a Dapanji, some Samsas and a lamb soup. I can't tolerate lamb so I had none of the lamb dishes. The portion size is pretty large. All the chicken dishes are good. The chicken kebabs are my fav. They are juicy and flavorful, with big portion size. One thing worth noting is that the day we visited they only accept cash or Mastercard. Not sure if it's a rule or if it's just some temporary thing. But just be prepared to bring cash or a master card for payment. They have Chinese menu. Easy to park. We had a lamb rice 手抓饭，lamb kebab, and a lamb piece soup. I like the rice the best. The kebab was still red and bloody inside, partially, which was rare to me. The kebab came with a naan bread which was very good. One single kebab was 5$, expensive but worth it. The soup was average. Not like what I had in China. I asked for vinegar. Normally when I add it, the soup would turn white or creamy, due to the effect of protein act with acid. However, this one didn't have that. So I guess it may be different cooking method. read more

This was a recommendation from a friend and it came with a history lesson that the Uyghur people that represent this cuisine are descendents of the individuals from the silk road that gave Marco Polo his first tastes of pasta. I will tell you that it is located in a strip plaza and has a quaint little ambience. The sounds and smells from the kitchen add to the experience. The menu is simple and is presented with pictures. While I waited for my meal i enjoyed some tea which had to steep for 15 minutes. l ordered the lamb and chicken skewers as they are a staple on the menu and came highly recommended. It was good and eating it with the naan is incredible. You can taste the cumin and other spices as they came through. The chicken was so soft and tender it was my preferred choice. Uyghur Somen a dish that is made with a short noodle with veal and peppers, cilantro, string beans, tomatoes and other fresh vegetables. The broth was hearty, earthy and flavourful there was something familiar yet new about the taste. The spices were hot but you couldn't taste it on the front end, it blended nicely and complemented the overall flavour. You can tell if this was Marco' s first experience to pasta how it was the inspiration for what the world knows today. Yum... an absolute hidden gem in Scarborough!!! Just as you pull into the plaza parking lot you can already smell the lamb skewers from this restaurant. The interior of the restaurant is quite unique, kinda small but having a very homey vibe to it, with some interesting quotes on the wall. The server was very friendly and seated us right away. The menu is all in Chinese but everything on the menu looked so bomb - I wanted to try all of them! You can either ask for water, or grab a drink of your choice from their fridge that they have near the front of the restaurant, and pay for it afterwards. We ordered the lamb skewers, lamb soup, the hand pulled noodles and the short noodles (sorry - forgot the names of these!!!) The lamb skewers were flavourful, but a bit dry. I've read reviews that the skewers were juicy but unfortunately, I did not have the same experience. Otherwise, the skewers were huge and it comes with handmade naan - my favourite, esp anything with carbs!!! The hand pulled noodles and short noodles were super chewy and yummy as well! I rarely give out 5 stars but Charcoal Kebab House definitely deserves it. I've been to this place a few times and loved it so much that I didn't want to write a review so that I could keep it to myself. However, recently they have renovated and now have doubled the seating so I feel like I can share :P For anyone that comes here yes, the service is slow and the food does take its time to come to your table but there is a very good reason why. Before the renovations you could clearly see into the kitchen and notice that noodles were handmade fresh to order. I have had pulled noodles all over the city and nothing compares. All the other places I've been to pre-make their noodles and refrigerate them. This made to order process is what puts these noodles on another level. When visiting try anything with noodles in it, and try the lamb and chicken kebabs. Honestly, everything on the menu is very good. Just remember to bring a big appetite. The menu has photos so If it looks good, order it. You will not be disappointed. The hours are a little unique. My guess is because they are creating the freshest noodles possible the speed is not ideal for the weekday lunch crowd. so they opted not to open during lunch on weekdays. Lamb skewers were perfectly cooked (and much larger than I anticipated, very worth the price) and everything we tried was very flavourful, but watch out!! The food is very oily (but delicious!). We tried the dapanji, lamb skewers (with naan), Uyghur lamb polo (rice, lamb, and raisins), kidney skewers, lamb soup, and the langman noodles. Their hand-pulled noodles are very long and have great texture. I don't have any negative comments for anything I tried. It was all fantastic! I recommend their signature lamb skewers and the dapanji. The only negative comments I have for this place are: the food is served rather slowly, and the seating & service was a bit awkward...
