I've been coming to Charlie's Trio in South Pasadena on and off for many years, and it continues to be a solid spot. The ambiance is always great, warm and inviting, perfect for a relaxed meal with friends. This time I ordered a spicy pasta with chicken. The spice level was really nice and flavorful, but from the first bite I felt like it could have used a bit more salt to bring everything together. Still very enjoyable overall. Service was decent, not outstanding. Our server didn't check in as often as we would have liked, but it seemed like he might be new, so I'll give some grace there. My friends ordered the eggplant parmesan and a salmon dish, and both were absolutely delicious, no complaints at all. Overall, great ambiance and really good food. I'll definitely keep coming back. I met some friends at this restaurant for lunch last week. They served complimentary bread with olive oil that had herbs in it. OMG. It was so good! I couldn't stop eating it. I ordered the Seafood Diavalo, which was linguine in a spicy tomato sauce with clams, calamari, shrimp, and fish. It comes with mussels, but I don't like mussels. My meal was incredible! It was a large portion, so I took leftovers home to my husband. He loved it too! Our server was Aiko, and she was delightful. I can't wait to go back and try other items on their menu. I called in my order about a week in advance for a catering take out order for a birthday. We got the Broasted chicken and Ribs package. It came with a choice of 3 sides (we chose garden salad with choice of dressing, pesto pasta salad and potato wedges). Everything was fresh and delicious. Even with the 20 minute drive home, our food was still hot! Oh my! I've been to Charlie's Trio in the city of Alhambra many times throughout the years and just realized I've never left a review!?!? (GASP!) Let me start off by saying that the service here has been consistently good. There's usually a lot of locals who dine at this establishment. They have both indoor and covered patio seating, as well as bar seating available. Prices are very reasonable, and they do have a very good Happy Hour menu ($2 off house wine). Food quality is pretty good but I especially love their Chicken Marsala the most! The only con? Despite having a parking structure right behind the restaurant, it can still get crazy busy in the area on weekends where finding a parking may be difficult. This is a family friendly restaurant, and definitely a wonderful place to bring your parents and kids. Highly recommended! read more

First time trying out Charlie's Trio Cafe and we're so glad we decided to dine in. As soon as we came in the eatery we were greeted and the hostess who was so sweet and friendly. She seated us right away to a nice booth. This establishment is very welcoming and spacious. Plenty of tables and chairs for dining inside as well as outside. We ordered Specialty Pizza, Margherita Specialty Pizza and Chicken Parmesan. We received complimentary garlic bread. It was baked fresh. The garlic bread was moist and tasteful. Chicken Parmesan was fulfilling with a huge chicken breast. It was flavorful and tender. The chicken was not overcooked. The Margherita Specialty Pizza had several types of cheese. The Specialty Pizza had truffles and different type of meat. All the pizzas and pasta were delicious. The thickness of the crust was proportional to the type of pizzas. Convenient Italian spot with decent food Parking is accessible with street parking and a free lot around the corner. Food is average but does it's job. I had a restaurant down the street from Charlie's, but had not been here for at least 20 years. I had a meeting and decided to give it a shot along with my brother. The minestrone soup was quite good, but I was hoping to find some sort of noodle in the soup. The pizza was quite good as well. The Chicken Parmesan was fairly good as well. Since we've sat here, I've been approached from 3 other employees aside from our waiter! That's top notch! The server was very attentive to our needs. I asked the server what pizza he recommended, and he said the Torino, which came with caramelized onions, spinach, and olive oil base instead of tomato sauce. My wife got a basic mushroom pizza. The restaurant provides complimentary bread with olive oil, which was nice. Nothing special about it, but a nice touch nonetheless. The pizza was a bit on the saltier side for me, crust slightly thicker. I loved the caramelized onions and olive oil though. My fiancee and I walked in to this restaurant on his birthday. We told the hostess we wanted to look at the menu first & she was really attentive - although she was working take out orders, noticed when we were ready and walked us to a table & said a server would be right with us. It was nearly 10 minutes before someone (the busser) came to our table with share plates & breadsticks. This stopped us from walking out originally. Still no water. During these 10 minutes, we saw 2 tables get sat, get drinks, and get orders in. And two more tables get their check, pay, and leave. Finally, our server comes over and asks about drinks. We just want water at this point because we dont want to wait for anything. Server asks about food and we order a pizza. We also ask for more breadsticks because by now, the two new tables have gotten their appetizers. We waited over 23 minutes for our food and since ordering, our server didnt come by once (yes, at this point, we were keeping track). I stopped my fiancee from walking out multiple times because I felt bad that the busses and hostess wouldnt make any tip off this. Also, we know that pizza in itself takes a longer time to cook than pasta / fries or anything else the other tables might have ordered. For $20/person (for up to 1.5 hours), the staff was super generous and filled up our glasses maybe 7-8 times. I got the breakfast burrito ($13) which had a good amount of ham, eggs and potato, but I wish it would have had avocado as well. Very good for the price however. My husband got the caramel chicken and waffles and the portion was soooo big. The chicken was super crispy and the flavor of the waffle was good, I would have liked it to be more crispy but my husband liked it. The restaurant is normally an Italian restaurant/sports bar but their more Mexican/italian brunch menu on the weekends is a very good deal. Table also ordered the braised short rib ragu (tender & succulent) linguine & clams, and Charlie's sub (filled w/deli meats) and the chicken pesto sandwich (yummy!). We needed a quick lunch as we were on recess from the courthouse near by. I don't think the restaurant anticipated it being busy on a Tuesday afternoon they seemed short staffed but still trying their best. There were about 7-8 other tables besides ours. Food came out relatively quick for our party of 11, about 20 minutes. Their starter bread was so good, crisp crust on the outside but soft and fluffy inside. You have to drizzle balsamic vinegar into the olive oil and herb they serve. Otherwise I personally think there isn't much flavor. Pan Roasted Salmon- perfect crusted bottom, salmon wasn't overdone. Spaghetti pesto paired well with the salmon. Chicken Parmigiana- panko crust wasn't too thick, thin layer. Bottom of chicken soaked up spaghetti sauce while top was still crispy under a layer of tomatoes and melted cheese. Pasta Bud- you can really taste the mushrooms, try this dish if you love mushrooms! Serving size is large and can be shared and price is reasonable. I ordered Seafood pasta (Diavalo a which means fire ) and fettuccine Alfredo with chicken . This is a great eatery on the main strip of downtown Alhambra. The menu is Italian and predictably features pasta and pizza. Their wine list is minimal but covers the basics. I met a friend here for dinner. Some complimentary bread and oil was brought to the table which I enjoyed along with a glass of Sean Minor Cabernet Sauvignon which was smooth and lush. For dinner I ordered the margherita pizza. The thin crust of the pizza was crisp and delicious, not too droopy when picked up by hand. The basil and tomato as well as the mozzarella cheese were plentiful. I ordered a 12 inch pizza which was more than I could eat that day so took 3 of the 6 pieces home. I had a bite of my friend's fettuccini alfredo (okay, several bites) and that sauce is to die for. Service during our meal was exemplary; attentive but not overbearing. There is plenty of free parking in an enormous structure half a block away. This is definitely a great place to meet up with friends and enjoy a delicious, casual meal. read more

I'm not one to give a bad review. My family and I have been to Charlie's trio many time after my daughter's guitar class. I always say hey they are busy thats why the sevice is so poor, we stop coming and then we give it a try one more time. Today my little one wanted pasta after her class and we gave it another try. But once again they sit us and forget we exist after asking us what we want to order . The o ly person attentive is the gentleman cleaning the tables. The server totally forgets we are even there but then we see other ethnic groups being served to high standards. Just because we are Hispanics doesn't mean we do not have the means to tip. The food was cooked well, the meat entries and veggies were not dry nor overcooked, and everything arrived as ordered. Everyone, including the kids were happy with the dishes ordered. They have a happy hour Sunday brunch menu until 3pm. We arrived after 2pm, they said it was a busy day, so they ran out of steak and other brunch menu items that we were interested in trying. This family restaurant has been in business for more than 50 years and has two locations. They got their name after the grandfather, Charlie Feta, Sr., who worked in the kitchen, with a brother and Charlie Jr., to establish the restaurant. Our server, Cesar, was VERY helpful and attentive. He has worked at both locations and has been with the company for 25 years. The portions are very generous, we received complimentary bread and olive oil dipping sauce. The menu features appetizers, soup, salad, pasta, pizza, chicken, seafood, pork chops, sandwiches, and calzones. A children's menu is available for customers under 10 years old for only $7.25. With that being said, bring the entire Family! They can accommodate large groups for special occasions. They also have a bi-monthly wine club for tastings and special pricing. Sister restaurant of the Huntington Drive original, this Café is sitting on prime real estate on Alhambra's Main Street. Surrounded by Asian restaurants, national chains and bars, it stands out. It's almost as good as the original. Even for takeout. The menu is exactly the same as the sister restaurant, maybe slightly higher prices. You're paying for the location and the ambiance. One big plus is that this location participates in the Dinig Advantage Program - gotta get those airline miles! This visit was for takeout... I ordered some pizzas, chicken, and wings for a family party. Cesar took my order and was super helpful. Unfortunately, despite being late to pick up my order, the wings were not ready.
