We ate and drank, but the food was pricey, in small portions and wasn't flavorful/filling at all. The food when I came was just something to chew on and nice to look at...but for the price I wish it was something to eat. I get todays society and this is a place for photos and looks for sure. If I came back it would be for a drink or two and the ambiance/views, but not the food for certain. I can say without feeling bad that the food/snacks aren't what people come here for. The interior was very well decorated and the theme wasn't fully consistent through the place, but it looks great and it very well maintained. The service was good and everyone friendly. I really enjoyed the fire pits, but there was very little space to place food or drinks. There were 3 of us and just under $400 was spent (On me because I got a free ticket to the concert from a friend & wanted to treat all), with 2 drinks each and the snacks I took pictures of. I surely don't mind spending money when enjoying myself, but I do wish the food was enjoyable here. Came here with my boyfriend on a day trip to SF after being influenced by Instagram looking at reels raving about the unlimited paella deal that this place has. I can't stress the fact that this place is in a bad area of town enough/right in the Tenderloin by UC Law. We felt unsafe parking by the street, so we went to the Soma Grand Garage nearby and parked a few levels up to avoid potential break-ins (since the easier cars to locate are typically the first to go). This is not the business's fault, and I empathize with the workers who do have to come daily. However as a patron that is not local to SF, the location and staying vigilant is important to your wellbeing. The ambiance was nice, it was sunny and windy so definitely make sure to check the weather forecast for the day that you book or ask to be seated indoors if you wouldn't want to take your chances. We were seated near the terrace walkway as the seats by the patio right next to the paella station filled up pretty quickly. My boyfriend and I probably got around three plates each before we got full. Don't come in here expecting to eat your way through like you do with AYCE KBBQ! The rice will expand in your stomach! Leave some room (it pains me to do as someone who likes to get her moneys worth as well). We didn't end up ordering any rose or additional appetizers or drinks as it was not included. A lot of people were sipping on their drinks and just chatting with their friends, a lot of young people here! As for the paella itself, it was nothing to write home about. I came for the Sunday all you can eat paella brunch and it was ironically almost too sunny (they do need some umbrellas...). Service was super attentive. Cocktails were good, but they need to develop a daytime list as the ones available seemed to be better suited for the evening. The seafood paella was not perfect, but it was not bad. It had a good amount of clams, mussels, and shrimp. The artichokes on the veggie paella were nice. A few more ingredients (chorizo?) and maybe a bit more of the crunchy socarrat and it would be bumped up a few points. Service was super friendly and attentive. Made a reservation to celebrate with two birthdays in my friend group and was not disappointed with the service and atmosphere of this rooftop bar. Although Charmaine requires a $65 spending per reservation, that was easily achieved with 3-4 drinks (each about $20, on the pricier end). Although the prices of the drinks and the food were relatively higher compared to other rooftop bars/bars I've been to in the city, I was pleased with the view and thankful for the service. I wanted to make it a really nice surprise for my friends since it was their birthdays and attempted to coordinate with the server and hostess prior to the reservation to have something prepared for them. I think my cover almost got blown though when the hostess asked who the birthday girls were when we came to check in for our reservation, but they really made it up with complimentary dessert and champagne. My friends and I made a reservation for the Sunday lunch unlimited paella and it was a wonderful experience! It was around $40 per person, and we didn't order any drinks. Unfortunately it was so filling that I don't think I got my money's worth of paella, but the taste was pretty decent -- there was a lot of flavor and a mixture of different (albeit some unconventional) toppings, and they had both seafood + meat and vegetarian options. I would go for the rooftop experience though! We went on a sunny day so it was super warm, and the views of the downtown city skyline were absolutely beautiful. Be prepared in case you're sitting in the direct sunlight though. The location is also in a not-so-great area, so would probably recommend Ubering there. This is my first time here. My husband and I are celebrating our 34 Anniversary and this is one of the places he chose. I really enjoyed this roof top . I didn't make a reservation...MY BAD! What am I thinking? That this Instagrammable rooftop bar would have walk ins available? lol That is not the reasoning behind the 3 stars: story time! My boyfriend and I arrive to Charmaine's at 4:50ish on a Friday. I really didn't think there would be a line so early! There was about 10 of us total waiting to go in (reservations included). Once the reservations were let in and the hostess decided who was worthy of going in, we were told by security that there was absolutely no tables left, no where to stand near the bar and no waitlist to put our names down. I was so confused. This bar has been open for 30 minutes, how is there no waitlist with a line down the street? I wasn't too concerned about sitting on the patio, I was already waiting for a while so we asked if we could sit at the bar. At this point, we were deemed worthy and were let in. Security escorts you to the elevator and once you arrive to the rooftop, there is another hostess to seat you. Now here's the entertaining part, there was literally no one sitting at the bar and there was multiple tables to sit inside. Like....why is there a line down the street? I'm sure if people had the option, they wouldn't mind. We were just being told there was no waitlist and no tables. I shouldn't have to haggle to sit at a bar. The walls are made of floor to ceiling windows that open up, so you still get a beautiful view...definitely not the same vibes but not bad! Cocktails average at about 18 bucks, they were good but are not as aesthetically pleasing as this bar. The dinner menu is more of a appetizer menu, we tried the pretzel rolls to accompany our 18 dollar drinks lol...again, they were good but not that pretty. Went on a Sunday evening and was able to score a reservation same day . The ambience was very warm and welcoming. Our fabulous waiter Raz, Seated us out around a fire pit. The views were beautiful. This is a lower rooftop restaurant, but still amazing views. It was a little chilly for us to sit out there, but Raz was kind enough to get us each a blanket. We ordered the artesian cheese plate, and it was one of the best cheese plates I have had at a restaurant. All the cheeses were very good. There was a generous portion provided with a good assortment of fruits also had to try the homemade olives which paired well with the cheese plate. We each ordered a burger, which I have to say, is the best most flavorful burger I have ever had. The burger generally comes with fries. My partner got the fries and they were homemade and delicious. I however subbed out my fries for a salad, which was also very good simple side salad. They had kumquats in it, such a nice seasonal touch. It was my birthday, and our waiter was so nice to provide us with a chocolate mousse dessert that was to die for. If you're a major foodie and love to cook or eat good food that is high-quality, you have to check this place out. The chef for the evening was Jason, whom I was told has worked in Michelin rated restaurants. San Francisco is the foremost study in the gap between the rich and the poor. There is a Silicon Valley company on one side and a legion of homeless druggies on the other. The doors are locked lest someone walks in and shoots up, but once opened it is a hall of opulence. Similarly, this rooftop patio and bar located in the Proper Hotel serves fancy tapas and cocktails with views of the city's chimneys, but is also smack in the middle of the whirlwind of drugs, homelessness and disease. Life is usually stranger than fiction. They open their door at 5:00 PM and there is a podium at the street level entrance leading to their exclusive elevator. The rooftop setting that was empty when I entered at five filled up gradually. The wind was becoming chilly, but they have fire pits to keep those sitting outside warm. No reservation is seemingly required as I just walked in, but the good seats are likely taken without. The waitstaff are a mix of friendly down-to-earth folks and tacky inked wanna-bes, but they came across as friendly. The emphasis is on drinks, wine and cocktails. The food menu is limited, but what they had was quite decent. The pork belly and Japanese chcken meatballs were good; the pretzel balls nothing special. I could swear they buy their fries from The Melt where I did take-out two nights before as it was midnight and Tenderloin is a mess not suitable for walking around too much. The fries were crunchy. Good, but limited appetizer style foods, good views, friendly but occasionally cliched forced hipster waitstaff and prices were not as bad as they could get away with. Enjoy. read more

When my partner and I arrived, the entrance was roped off and the hostess was distracted talking to a group of people inside for several minutes. After letting ourselves in and getting the hostess's attention to check in, we were seated at a nice table with a fire pit outside. Our waitress rarely checked up on us and was more focused on servicing larger groups. At one point, we waited 20 minutes for 2 cocktails to arrive while larger groups nearby who ordered drinks after us were immediately served. Considering how this place has limited seating and is reservations only, slow service for a couple of drinks is ridiculous. Food/Drinks: The strawberry s'mores were delicious and came with 3 total. For drinks, our table ordered the kissin in the California sun, mister bigglesworth, proper cup, and Salem saberhagen. I'd say the California sun drink was the tastiest. A super elegant experience that is worth every penny for a special occasion. I came for my sisters birthday and the food, drinks, and service here were all phenomenal. We ordered a little bit of everything, from pork skewers, Japanese meatballs, fish tacos, fries, to the burger. While the portion sizes are a bit small for the price the food tastes amazing. This isn't regular mediocre bar food. My favorites were the burger and pork belly skewers,which had a perfect balance of fat to meat. While I can't remember the name of the cocktails I ordered, they were all balanced with a good amount of alcohol. In terms of ambiance, it was freezing cold with gusty winds that day but the fire pits and blankets provided were enough to keep me pleasantly warm. The service here was amazing-they went above and beyond to get my sister a dessert chocolate pot de creme with a candle, and because of the wind, patiently relit the candle three times without us asking to allow us to sing happy birthday. The highlight of the night was for sure the fantastic views, chic aesthetic, and gorgeous drinks! Though not in the safest part of the city, the security and check-in staff are very polite and made me feel safe once I entered the building. One thing to note is that making a reservation costs $5 per person, so our group decided to walk-in knowing that seating would be based on availability. It was also a bit busy since we came on a Friday evening, so it took us around 30 minutes of standing before we were able to get seating. Our table was extremely satisfied with the drinks and atmosphere, which was very picturesque and overall a great vibe. However, I can't say that I particularly recommend the pork skewers or the pretzel rolls, as the serving sizes are on the smaller side and they were not particularly amazing. We had nice outdoor seating, but two of the four seats were inconveniently placed under some plant bushes. The service was nice. We ordered three appetizers: the charcuterie, pretzel bread, and an babaganoush platter. They were average but overpriced. I had a tonic with lime, and my friend ordered a mocktail that tasted like Sanka with soda water, so we returned it. The staff was very friendly and accommodating, crediting us for the drink. The other two cocktails were fine, as was my tonic with lime. The total bill was just under $200 with tip, which we felt was definitely overpriced.
