We had soup and three specialty dishes. Although each was marked spicy, all were bland, no spice. And I'm not a spice king or anything. Restaurant is obviously catering to local consumer taste unfamiliar with authentic cuisine. I see this time and again with ethnic restaurants in Tucson. So, given the context of Tucson, I give it a 3 star. But this place wouldn't survive in a real urban environment with Thai cuisine competition. Can't believe people choose to live in Tucson where authentic ethinic cuisine for most Tucsonians seems to be Panda Express, Olive Garden and Taco Bell. I do like their lunch menu. Soup, Egg roll, and Entree for about $8. Since I am a vegetarian, I like to have tofu and vegetables. However, I have been to many thai restaurants and none of them have charged me 50 cents extra for tofu!.I wish that the extra charge was not there. Also, they also provide brown rice. Almost 10 bucks for Phad Thai that had a few noodles. Taste was ok, nothing raving. Lunch special is cheaper but have yet to try it. Used to be big fan of Char Thai and long time client till last night. It had been a few months since out last visit and I was shocked to find that the prices had increased and the portions decreased. I just ordered vegetable tom kha soup from here and to say the least, I'm not impressed. $11 for veggie soup and there's very little coconut milk and the veggies are old. Broccoli is turning yellow, mushrooms are dark and taste old, cabbage and lemongrass are both browning and the flavor is all off. Really? Will not return. read more

When I look at all these good reviews on this restaurant I have to wonder why. Then I realized its because there are no good Thai Restaurants in Tucson. This place sucks. The food is overpriced and under flavored. I think they cook the egg rolls and a head of time. Everything is soaking in Juice. The pad thai is not even good. They use the same 3 vegetables in every dish. Cabbage onions and carrots. That's the cheap stuff. I have tried this place 3 * and have written it off. Char's Thai used to be quite good. However, the food is now well below average. Also, everything is now served on small, beige plastic plates. The garnishes are gone. Further, paper napkins are now the norm. Seriously, I've had better Thai in airports. The service is also poor. It is sad that the quality has taken such a dive. read more

Having lived in Thailand, I'm a bit particular about Thai food hitting the nostalgia button, and I'll always prefer a restaurant that tastes more like Bangkok and the Eastern Seaboard than Isan (but will take Isan over America). My pad see ew tasted about right, but my wife's fried rice wasn't really Thai fried rice. However, I will probably go back again to try a few other dishes. I went with my family and at first i it looked unimpressive but the inside was actually inviting! The service was great and and I started with an order of the Tom Kha gai which was one of the greatest hot and sour soup I've ever had, next I had the Ref curry, it was moderately spicy but the taste was fantastic. The other good thing is that you can make just about everything vegetarian, and their tofu I perfect wen you do. My family praised the other dishes launch as their 4 star phad thai. Thought that the reviews were high and so why not try. Thought wrong. The service was not put together or professional and the food was very disappointing. I ordered Tofu and vegetables, but the Tofu came not hot and breaded and deep fried. The veggies were not fresh and when not satisfied the response was you can always ask for fresh. This place is always a great choice for tasty Thai food. every dish I've ever tried has always been great. this time we tried appetizer #9 - this lovely shredded mango salad with a menagerie of seafood pieces thrown in. very yummy! it's a little sweet and a little spicy. we then had the pineapple fried rice with chicken and shrimp. it's nice and peppery and flavorful. The cashews on top are a really nice touch too - adds a great nutty flavor. and then of course - an awesome pork red curry dish. The sauce was "medium" which was as much spice as I could handle. Great mix with veggies and was perfect on top of their white rice. We couldn't even eat it all and had to pack some of each of the dishes to take home. The place itself isn't much to speak of. It's always a little too warm and the seats are cleanish. But the staff is always very friendly and the food is just too fun to not keep going back! read more

The lunch specials are my favorite part of Char's. Extremely affordable options! You get a bowl of soup, an egg roll, and a main entree with rice--all for 7 or 8 bucks. The perfect balance of coconut milk and spice in the yellow potato curry has me ooh-ing and ahh-ing every time. Always delicious and friendly staff! It's a family favorite. The hot and spicy combo is my favorite dish but the tom ka gai is also so good! Favorite Thai curry in town! We don't come here as often as we would like because it is WAY across town from us. But sometimes we just have to make the journey! I've tried several types of curry here, and loved each one. They have the right consistency, not too watery, not too thick. Their Pad Thai is decent...not the best I've ever had. The pad thai tastes more like the almost sour tamarind rather than a sickly sweet fish sauce. I really liked this kind of pad thai, and the dish did not just have plopped down raw bean sprouts that are distracting in a dish like most places. The menu was sort of confusing when it came to curry. There was no list of just curries. However, you can just say what color you want - red, yellow, green - and specify the meat you want. The rice was superb - it was high quality and almost nutty. My friend got the green curry, and it was a thin soup but tasted like it had been simmering for awhile in a good way. There were a few green peppers in there and some bamboo shoots - nothing exciting. My other friend got some sort of yellow noodle vegetable dish - she specified spicy and it was just some dry spices resting on top of the dish. I would stick to the traditional dishes. Ask for "the spices" right after you get your meal and you get the little canisters of spices. And get the pad thai! For dinner, my meal was $7.95 which is excellent! The environment is really nice - everything seems authentic. The food is good but still not as good as the mainland. read more

I love this place. Great veg options, sweet staff, perfectly blended curries and soups. They carry the balanced feeling of Thailand and Buddhism into their business. Prices are not too high or low, but reasonable and the proportions veggie heavy and average sized, but packed with veggies where some places give more rice and sauce and less variety of veggies or meat. I live in Cali, so moving to Arizona and trying to find good Asian food was horrible! One day I found this place and decided to try it. The food is authentic Thai cuisine; they have fantastic tasting pad see eww! Also, if you want to go you should go around 8 or 9 because a lot of the old people usually go around 6/7 and that's when they have their rush.
