Spinach salad looked like someone who didn't know how to cook chopped some spinach and dumped and entire can of crumbled bacon on the side. $51 sea bass was undercooked and cold when it came to the table. Ordered a bunch of other stuff like miso black cod and risottos and pastas and all tasted like crap. This place desperately needs a new chef with some tastebuds. read more

My wife and I decided to take my 91 year old mom and her friend to Happy Hour at the Chart House. We always enjoy happy hours at Chart House but had never been to this one.The views are incredible!It overlooks the marina.It pays to come early as it gets crowded quick.Our waiter Tony was exceptional and humorous. We had lettuce wraps,lobster tartar,sliders and coconut shrimp.All were good with the shrimp being the biggest hit.Drinks were good and always refreshed.Tony then offered to a take a picture with the view ending a great evening.Parking can be an issue but valet is available. read more

It's really unfortunate that this icon of Dana Point is so badly run now. We were there about a week ago and the food was abysmal. I have had better salads at truck stops-no joke. The wait staff was good and definitely apologetic but really isn't an excuse for this type of failure. The manager never even came by the table. Inexcusable. The main dish was fair but very over salted and not as described on the menu. When the wait staff took the dishes back because of missing sides/ingredients, the cooks allegedly replied, "it's there, you just can't see it!" Wow. The calamari was something I would really recommend to get. It has crispy noodles underneath the calamari and some veggies. My lobster & shrimp pasta was good to. The calamari filled me up so I ended up just eating the shrimps and brought the rest home. Hubby really enjoyed the blackened cod. Heather, our server made the recommendation and she was so right- it was so good! The dish has some small pieces of bokchoy, coconut and ginger taste and they all tasted so good together. Second time coming and didn't disappoint. First time was over a year ago and just the two of us and we dined outside. This time we came with two littles in tow for my birthday and for their happy hour. Thankfully they had one table still open. The spinach artichoke dip was amazing and something we would definitely order again. Glad we tried the fried artichokes, they were good but paled in comparison to the dip. The boys enjoyed the fries. I loved the mac nut mahi again. N said he would pass on the fish tacos next time. I was so excited to try the lava cake since I couldn't have it last time when I was pregnant since made with alcohol and it was good. But it wasn't a lava cake. When you cut into it there was no runny ooey-gooey liquid as you would expect from a lava cake. Valet parking and they accept CC. Too bad no street parking but then again with two kids it is nice they have easy parking. Overall a lovely celebration and a great meal. I am highly disappointed and frustrated in the sales office and their total lack of customer service. I am trying to set up a rehearsal dinner for my son. I have called 4 times and zero response. The view is absolutely beautiful looking over the Marina in Dana Point Harbor. The atmosphere is lovely. The window booths are narrow. Service was great. They were extremely attentive. I had the salmon and my husband had the ribeye steak. Everything was excellent, so much that we came back the next day for appetizers out in the courtyard. They have their own menu in the courtyard which is much less expensive. The prime rib sliders, chicken lettuce wraps and coconut Shrimp were very impressive. This will become a regular for us. Came here for an anniversary dinner and really enjoyed our night. The view was phenomenal. Jacob our server was outstanding. The dinner was great but he really made our night even better. I had the NY strip which was cooked perfect. We also had the prime rib. I liked the hint of rosemary on the prime rib. Both steaks were really tender and better than my $70 NY strip from Rare Society. The coconut shrimps were good and had a nice crunch to them. Dessert was the chocolate lava cake. The lava cake thickness was spot on but for some reason the lava part wasn't really there. Otherwise every thing was perfect. My husband and I had the opportunity to check out their happy hour and while the food is consistently good, much better fare then most happy hours with fair prices, it was the service that gains the five stars. Rarely do we get out of work before 6pm so the bar/lounge area was packed with a more mature crowd (and they had a rehearsal dinner) but Victoria, one of the managers, kindly scouted the area and found us a booth as they had expanded the lounge into the dining area that night to ensure we could enjoy their happy hour. Further, our server, Kevin, couldn't have been any better, friendly, checked in on us frequently and ensure we had "last call" for food and beverage since we had arrived later than the other guests. We've dined with CH in the past both in the dining room and the outdoor patio so will definitely return. Thank you, Victoria and Kevin for making our HH even better than expected. read more

Had an absolutely wonderful time at happy hour! The food was delicious especially the calamari and the prime rib sliders. My pomegranate martini was exceptional! The only reason I gave the restaurant a four is because of the service. The service was not slow which I appreciated but the waiter had an attitude with an unhappy face and was obnoxious when my wife asked a question about the kids menu and had the nerve to say to her "only kids can order off of the kid menu" I'm not really sure what that meant but I didn't like it. 30+ Year Customer Lost - 4th of July Experience TL;DR - Chart House lost a 30 year customer tonight, due to multiple mis-steps on 4th of July. Parking, food, fireworks, and management are all to blame. Note that I did not mention the support staff. The Long Version I've been going to Chart House Dana Point since I was 5 years old. Back then my step dad used to tell us that the building was created by 3 UFOs that had landed. If you've been there you'd understand why. But over the last 30+ years we've celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, valentines, 4ths of July, engagements, graduations, and more. We choose Chart for consistent food, great service, and beautiful views of Dana Point Harbor. After last night's experience, I don't know that I will ever go back, even for dinner. I'll start with what I believe to be the primary detractor, overselling the venue space to maximize profits at the expense of diner experience. The Chart House has recently, maybe in the last 5 years, started selling exclusive dining experiences on their patio and terrace lawn. I think promising "private" fireworks viewing and probably a prix fixe menu. Not a negative if the event stands alone, but the impact to the rest of the restaurant is atrocious. I will note here that when we made our reservations for dining, there was no mention of the private event and its impact on access to normally accessible areas of the restaurant, i.e. the terrace lawn. Let's start our journey at the start, parking. Selling the additional few hundred seats puts a strain on their already small parking lot. Which meant that even though we arrived 30 minutes before our reservation time, there was no parking at the restaurant. We parked at the Ocean Institute in the Harbor, a half mile and 200 ft elevation change away. After parking and walking, we were now 15 minutes late for our 7:15 reservation. The host staff are kind enough, and we are seated within 10 minutes of our arrival. Knowing that the restaurant is busy, and there is a special event, we're expecting dinner service to be slower than usual. Which is fine, we're here to enjoy the fireworks at 9pm anyway. We weren't expecting it to crawl at a snail's pace. And we definitely weren't expecting Chart House to be out of simple things like bread or straws. If we sat at 7:40, we probably ordered dinner around 8:30, received plates around 9:15, and ultimately asked for our dessert to go around 10pm. Through all of this I will say that our service staff, in particular our waitress Heather, were great. Our experience is in no way a reflection on her. But slow service and 86'd essentials were not our biggest issue. The reason that we will not be going back to Chart House is the lack of access to the lawn for fireworks, and the manager's attitude towards the diners who stepped outside. My family and I have attended the 4th of July celebration at Chart House for at least 3 of the last 5 years, likely the only years we missed were due to COVID. Last year 2023 we found space on the terrace lawn with no issue or impact to their special event. This year however there were wristbands and the lawn was roped off. Unacceptable in my opinion. However, our waitress indicated that there was a small portion of the lawn that was unsold, and that we could take our 5 year old out there to experience the fireworks. We did so as the show started, and the manager immediately stopped my wife and daughter along with 4 or 5 other people from enjoying the festivities. One patron expressed his disapproval of this action so loudly that we could hear from inside the restaurant that he had spent over $1,000 at his table and expected to be able to access the lawn. When my daughter came inside with tears in her eyes because she could not see the show, I did what any dad would do, snuck out again. Thankful to the staff who ushered us, and two other young girls, past the "velvet ropes" so that we could take a seat at the UNOCCUPIED benches on the terrace lawn. And another thank you to the second patron who took the brunt of the wrath from the manager yet again, loudly expressing his dissatisfaction to the dismay of many diners who could overhear their altercation. I agree, spending $1,600 in his case is far too much money to not see the fireworks on 4th of July. My daughter and I enjoyed the fireworks show in its entirety. She was none the wiser to the commotion of the adults in the background. So my advice to the restaurant, if they don't want to continue to lose guests, is to stop overselling the night. If that's not possible, if the money is just too good, then at the very least let us know that we won't be able to see the fireworks as we have for the past 30 years, unless we're ready to pony up $150 per person for a VIP event. I for one won't be back, for any reason, and look forward to experiencing some of the many new restaurants that are in the works at Dana Point Harbor. read more

We came early and while the restaurant was still closed we enjoyed the club music outside which was nice. At exactly 4 o'clock it had opened the door. We didn't have the reservation, however, the girls at the register found a table for us by the window inside. Which was a plus, of course. What wasn't great it's the flies (not huge, thank goodness) flying inside the booth, so I used the menu catching three of them along with another insect. The table wasn't very clean, there were some sticky traces of whatever it was on the table. One of the forks that was placed by the plates had some food stuck inside, (obviously their dishwasher didn't do a good job). The glass with an artificial candle inside, was broken. All that ruined the mood. The salads, bread and drinks were good, and served beautifully. Both of our entrees were delicious! They also served well , and looked beautiful, mine looked a bit messy. At the time when we were done with our entrees the waiter got very busy with other clients and we had a long wait for the boxes, desert and the check. Not great, but at least we got $10 back and desert to go. What else was irritating its the way that the girls at the register were treating us, although there was nothing specific, but the way they handled everything was in a kind of fussy and chaotic manner instead of a calm, friendly and professional. And one more thing I'd like to mention. Six months ago we had reserved a table for a new year eve and was eagerly waiting to celebrate it, unexpectedly in a very short notice ( 2 hours) we received the text message from the restaurant regarding the cancellation of our reservation with no explanation! No one had reached out to us on that evening or the next ... it's unprofessional! read more

Each time we have been to the Chart House with reservations we have had 40 minute or longer wait times. This last time was for our anniversary. We waited an hour and 45 minutes with 7 o'clock reservations on a Sunday night. We stayed only because there would be no other restaurant open if we left. They all close at nine. I think the only reason this Restaurant stays in business is because of its Spectacular view, especially if you're lucky enough to get one of the view tables. After waiting an hour and 45 minutes they seated us at a small deuce in the corner of the bar area when there were visibly two nice view booths available. They had pulled this on us before & we complied although not happily. This time I wasn't having it and insisted on one of the two booths by a window. Have no idea why they didn't seat us there to begin with. The menu is quite pricey and the food is just so-so for the cost. I bring my own seasonings to put on the prime rib as the "herb crusted" prime rib has absolutely no herbs on it. The lamb chops are just "good." The lava cake has no lava, it's just a good chocolate cake. Their delicious steamed artichoke is no longer on the menu as of quite a while back. We got the seared Aji appetizer instead. It was good. The bread they serve is very good too. We enjoyed our glass of wine. The long wait time was stressful for us as well as those who came after us so we are seriously rethinking ever going back even though the manager was good enough to comp one of our glasses of wine and the seared Aji appetizer. We actually didn't even get to order until just before 9 o'clock which is their closing time. All in all, an unpleasant way to celebrate our anniversary. read more

We would have expected this from a coffee shop type place, but not the Chart House and certainly not at the prices they charge. Profoundly sub-par food and preparation. Service was not good. The server explained that he was a new server. He didn't have a working knowledge of the menu and no clue about the wines. Nice guy, but had no support from management or other servers. We even had to ask for a utensil set-up - - - after the meals were brought out. We sat outdoors on the patio. View of the harbor is spectacular. Unfortunately, the glass surrounding the patio was filthy dirty with grime and bird poop. Very very unappetizing! We commented on the condition of the patio glass to the hostesses on our way out. I have been a Chart House fan for over 30 years and this was hands down the worst experience i have ever had at a restaurant. Reso for 7:45pm and when we arrived we were told they were behind and it would be 30 min. Ok, not a huge deal but when we were standing there at 8:15 a couple came up and asked about their reservation and were told it would take another 30-45 minutes. Their reso was at 7:00! Looking around there were 5 open 4 tops. During this fiasco, as +20 patrons waited for seating, many with reservations over 90 minutes overdue, where was the manager in all this? Nowhere. There was ZERO manager initiative or response. ZERO effort to make things right, not even a glass of water for waiting customers. 1.5 hour wait for customers with advance reservations is beyond ridiculous. It is simply bad management. Hostess apologized and said they were running about 20-30 min late and that the bar was packed but we could try waiting there and she would come find us. At 7:15 we went asked and was told table still not ready. At 7:40 went and asked and was seated. We had requested a table by the windows but was given one in the corner. A waiter finally came and took our drink order at 8:00. My drink came right away and my boyfriend's took 20 min. As we were finishing our dinner the manager randomly popped into our booth and sat down. He never apologized for all of the delays or mentioned my birthday. After we paid the bill and got up to leave the waiter said, "oh yea, happy birthday." Needless to say, won't be coming to Chart House anymore. read more

I am going to give this restaurant four stars for a few reasons. 1. The service: The service was about 3/5 stars. Our server was an excellent server. However, we did not get the seat that we wanted. At first, we were seated by the bar by the Christmas tree. The table was small, and being 5"7' and wearing heels, I would have knocked over that Christmas tree. I did not felt comfortable. My husband asked for another seat and we got a booth. 2. The food: The food was pretty good. My husband's favorite was the Spinach Chopped Salad. It was the best Spinach Chopped Salad I have ever tasted. The salad includes: chopped spinach, chopped bacon, radish, red onions, baby Bella mushrooms, and a honey mustard vinaigrette. For the Christmas menu, we got a meal for $65 a person. We got the lamb, prime rib, coconut shrimp, and cheesecake. For drinks, I got the Palmer nonalcoholic drink and he got a Coke. Lamb & Prime Rib: The lamb was excellent. I loved how tender the meat was. The lamb was flavorful and delicious. It was seasoned well. He enjoyed the Prime Rib as well. He cleared the plate so quickly. Coconut Shrimp: We both agreed the coconut shrimp was mediocre. It did not have enough of the coconut taste to it. It just tasted like fried shrimp. There has to be a balance between the coconut and the taste of the shrimp. I did not snap a picture of it because I forgot to. I was too excited to taste it. The cheesecake: It was excellent. We loved the cherries! The drinks: Coca Cola is Coca Cola. For my drink, the Palmer - it was okay. Next time I would get a real alcoholic drink. I just forgot my ID. We have been to this location several times and we had great experience until tonight. I usually do not like writing bad reviews but the way they handled the situation was so unprofessional I feel like I need to speak up for the group. Our server was a very nice attentive lady, however, she unfortunately knocked down a wine glass and spilled good amount of red wine onto our guests' pants. Stuff like this happens. And the one who got his pants ruined by the spilled red wine we were hosting, so he was not even mad about it at first. We just assumed somewhat "high end" restaurants like this would handle this matter in an elegant manner. However, instead of handling this situation like most restaurants would do (get the wine bottle off the bill etc...) the manager named Steven Reed came out and "ARGUED" with the guest about the cost of his pants and how he swears red wine can be washed off easily. We were all embarrasses for the manager...About how he is embarrassing himself in-front of the customer who works in other high end hospitality business. Our bill was around $500 and this manager felt the need to "ARGUE" with the customer about the cost of dry cleaning. We were supposed to have pleasant dinner to impress our guests, instead we ended up having to show how low of standard American hospitality business operates under. read more

Came here to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday and it was overall a great experience! There's valet for $9, but you could also park along the street in front for free. We arrived 10 minutes before our 6:30 pm reservation, and we were seated fairly quickly after waiting a few minutes. I requested for a booth with a window view (online), and the staff made it happen without any issues. Our server Erick was extremely friendly and welcoming, and was a part of why our evening was so enjoyable. We ordered two peach palmers, truffle fries, a 9 oz filet mignon, and the captain's cut (14 oz) of the prime rib. The drinks were pleasant yet not too sweet, and the fries were nothing special but still a nice touch. My girlfriend's filet mignon was cooked to the right temperature, and tasted delicious. As for my prime rib, it was cooked perfectly, and the white horseradish sauce was a nice touch. Erick also made sure to bring our dessert with a candle lit to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday, which we thought was a sweet gesture. My fiancé and I are currently scouting out venues to hold our wedding dinner next year, took one look at the pictures online, and decided this place looked like an awesome place to check out first. There's so much more I want to mention about our impressions of this place, but will just keep to the basics. As soon as we pulled up into the driveway, the valet stopped us from going down to the garage below and said it's valet parking only... even though we had an early 4.30pm dinner reservation and not too many people were around yet. The valet kind of took me by surprise as he came up to my car window without wearing a mask.... so much for caring about their guest's safety. Then down we headed to the restaurant level, and again, none of the hostesses were wearing masks. I was starting to get a bit nervous here. Anyway, the hostess seemed friendly enough and led us to our table by the window.... with beautiful large window views out to the marina. Shortly after, we were greeted by our server.... nice guy.... wore a mask, but obviously didn't enjoy it as it kept "falling" below his nose. He was friendly, helpful, and gave us his honest recommendations and opinion about various items on the menu. Everything looked really good and yummy, but since it was still too early for our regular time, we weren't really that hungry and just ordered a medium well done filet mignon for my fiancé and the grilled Mahi for me.... and to share, we ordered a few sides.... the sizzling mushrooms, grilled veggies and couscous (which was changed by them to cauliflower rice), and asparagus. Nyeeeeh.... it was all ok. My fiancé's steak looked a bit too well done and dry... she said it tasted ok though, my mahi was ok too.... problem was that it all tasted like it had been sitting at the counter for a good 15 to 20 minutes before being brought out to us... the mains weren't hot at all. As for the sides, they actually tasted quite good.... but again, they were all lukewarm at best and had definitely been sitting out for quite some time..... there sure wasn't any sizzle on the mushroom's hot plate. Other than our server being nice, friendly, and relatively attentive.....I now know why people come here.... it's obviously for the gorgeous setting and views.... I'm pretty sure it's not the food. That being said, I really don't think this place would be suitable for my wedding dinner, but am very happy I got to come and experience this place at least once in my lifetime. Honestly, I felt rather uncomfortable here.....half the servers/staff either were not wearing a mask, and those who were wore it pulled down below their nose or below their chin. My husband and I met here. Our first date was here and we like to come back here to reminisce our first date. The food was amazing and it's always as good as the first time. I usually get the filet mignon. And for dessert we always get the Lava Cake. Delicious! This is a sweet spot for us. I don't know how this place has 3 stars. Food was amazing! Our server, JACOB, was so nice and awesome! He gave me awesome drink recommendations (the Basil & Yuzu was GREAT). My boyfriend and I were celebrating Valentines and he made it so special! Jacob was very personable and conversational. We had the chilean sea bass and 7oz filet mignon. IT WAS GREAT. We did not get an accompanied sauce with the filet, but I definitely would next time. It was not dry at all, but it only comes with the filet and small side mashed potatoes. It was amazing.
