I've had take-away once from Chau, but today was my first sit-down experience. The seating may be off-putting for some, since it is benches rather than tables. I absolutely love Chau. I can't believe that for years I held off trying it, because I was under the false belief that I wouldn't feel fully satisfied with it being vegan. I finally tried it one evening with a vegan friend, and boy was I wrong. The moment the golden temple broth touched my lips I was hooked. I've been coming here regularly ever since. Even my meat-loving boyfriend loves it. I'm so obsessed with the golden-temple soup that I can't not order it, every single time. My favourite way to have it is with the quinoa, which sounds like it's going to be too healthy tasting, but it just compliments the soup so well. The texture of the quinoa is so nice in the soup and it doesn't really absorb the broth too much. I also like to get extra veggies, between my boyfriend and I we get one order of extra regular veggies (broccoli, cauliflower carrot) and one extra order of yams. The extra veggies makes it all the more hearty and I always have leftovers. Even though I always get the golden temple, I've tried lots of other things too. Everything so far has been delicious. I've tried the diving for pearls soup , which is really tasty, the fresh rolls (the tempeh one is my absolute favourite) the baisou chips (must get), the coconut shake (so yummy- must try) and the peanut bar (you absolutely must get this). The ice cream is also really yummy, my favourite is the green goodness. I don't usually like vegan ice cream, but this is so delish. Chau is a great place for a quick casual healthy bite, for vegans and non-vegans a like. The service is always friendly and prompt and the food is always delicious and consistent. It also a great place for takeout, which is especially important in these times. I find in a lot of other restaurants, the food either doesn't take out well or you end up getting screwed on the portion size or preparation. So It's really nice to find a restaurant where you know you are going to be equally satisfied when choosing takeout and never have to worry about feeling ripped off. For a vegan restaurant, this is absolutely delicious! My meat eating boyfriend doesn't enjoy attending vegan, or vegetarian option restaurants. But he enjoys this one very much! Very busy place, I have ordered take out a few times, gone at different tunes during the day - and they are always busy! Parking kinda sucks. The service is good, relaxed and friendly staff. The portions are very large! Great for sharing. The spring rolls are so good! One of my fav dishes is the golden temple soup. My recommendation is, if your going to get noodles ask for half and get some extra bean sprouts (save carbs) They even have good tea/coffee options! Great variety for such a small place. I'm super upset to be writing this review as Chau has been a staple of me and my partner's for the last 4 years since we moved to Vancouver! We also always bring family and friends there and often get the jars of golden tumeric broth. Unfortunately I will not be visiting again. Mid-October I had a flare up of GI-related health issues, and after not eating for a couple days and spending the time in bed, the only thing I was feeling like eating was Chau (the best medicine!). So I ordered via telephone, and drove to the Victoria location to pick it up. I approached the counter and stated I was here to pick up take out, to which the lady responded "ok, vaccine card and ID please" and I again stated, "Oh no, I'm just wanting to get my take out soup" and she stated "You don't have your vaccine passport and ID????" (No I did not have it on me, this is not a requirement to pick up takeout). Then she quickly, in a panicked voice, stated several times "go outside! go outside! go wait outside!!!" So I hurried outside to stand in the pouring rain when I'm already feeling unwell. I was in shock the way she was treating me and considered leaving, but having worked in hospitality/service industry for 12 years I did not want my unpaid for food to go to waste. A few minutes later a gentleman came out with my take out and handed me the debit machine to pay. I asked him why I was asked for ID and vaccine passport while trying to pick up take out and he responded "it's the provincial health order.' I've been a nurse for the last 5 years, and believe me, that was not the provincial health order. I told him that's not in the order, and once again he responded it was the PHO. I have picked up takeout from 10+ restaurants since then, and it has never been an issue. That experience has left such a sour taste in my mouth for my once-favorite-restaurant that I would never return to be treated like that. read more

CHAU Veggie Express has been in this neighbourhood for quite awhile now and I've been coming here since it first opened. While the restaurant food and decor has remained relatively the same, it's definitely become more popular and"hip". My favourite dish is still the Golden Temple soup with the tasty curry broth and a good helping of kale, cauliflower, broccoli, tofu, carrot, taro,etc.. I'm only giving this place a 4 star or really a 3.5 star because I haven't found the consistency in flavour and portions in other dishes. The tropical rainstorm bowl is very flavourful but sometimes the noodles are either lukewarm rather than cool/cold like they were when I first start eating here. Furthermore, the namahata fresh rolls with the "fish" sauce has a nice fresh bite but you now barely get any sauce to dip the rolls in. Understandably, you don't want waste but to be given less than a third of a Chinese teacupful of sauce for four pieces of the rolls is really inadequate. The front staff has also completely changed over as well and they do a good job. However, they don't seem to be as friendly as the original staff but that maybe due to the popularity of the restaurant and they're just too busy now. read more

They are great for takeout as well, I ordered here quite a lot during the past two years, and they have never disappointed. I had a #10 bowl (rickety richshaw), I thought it was just okay - could have used a bit more flavour, the fish sauce on the side wasn't really enough. A little pricey for what it was, too. Also tried the namaste fresh rolls (#20) - was pretty impressed with these, the crispy shallots added a little crunch which was really delicious. Quite filling with the tofu and peanut sauce. I got takeout, the ordering process was a little confusing - the first time I called no one answered and the message said not to leave orders on the answering machine - there was no mention of calling back, so it wasn't clear to me whether they took orders over the phone at all. (I later called back and spoke to a server who did take my order.) Service was fairly quick (about 20 minutes). Interior of restaurant looks nice although didn't stay to eat. I was pleasantly surprised by this place. We arrived at 5pm in a weekend and were able to find a table open. It is a communal seating restaurant. You order at the counter and the food is brought out to you. We tried their fresh rolls, their rickshaw bowl and their sand dunes noodle bowl. The fresh rolls were fragrant. The sauce they provided with the rickshaw bowl pulled the dish together and my husband really enjoyed it. I enjoyed the sand dune noodles the most. The broth had great depth of flavour even though there was no meat in it. Their ice creams were good; their tapioca pudding was odd , it was salty sweet. I was okay with it but won't be craving it anytime soon. As others have said, prices are steep for what the food is made of. I will be back if in the area. read more

CHAU VeggiExpress can definitely get the carnivores excited. I normally refuse to have vegetable entrees at restaurants, but CHAU VeggieExpress taught me to appreciate all the different flavours and texture of vegetables. The portions are huge, so I advise that you do not get too excited about all the deep fried goodness on their appies sections (i ordered both spring roll and taro chips which might have overcompensated for the whole health factor I was going for). I really enjoyed the curry noodle dish I ordered. I strongly recommend it for the subtle curry flavour of the soup and the freshness of the veggies. I still can't believe the low price I paid for such a great light tasting meal. I felt like my soul went to a relaxation spa while I was eating there. Service was pretty efficient, casual atmosphere was busy and all the food looked amazing. Let's get this out right now, I do not search for 'these' restaurants, I am a (for better word from the Wendy's commercial) meatatarian and without my partner's recommendation (more like request) to come here, the chances of me coming here would be slim, very slim, but I have to say that they do a pretty good job to make me forget eating meat (for that short time I am here only!). We came here on an in between time, right before dinner so it was nice and quiet, I think there was a person sitting across from us and one at the window, but it was pretty empty. This is another restaurant that has the infamous communal table that takes up most of the front end restaurant. You can also choose to people watch at the window with some stooles facing Victoria street, take your pick. The routine is to make your order at the till, then they will bring out your food to wherever you are sitting, so it's not your typical seat your butt, wait for server type joint which is all good. The one thing that my partner was eyeing on the vegetarian pho which she did order, then asked me to overlook the menu and order something. I choose the sandwich and really wasn't expecting much. The first thing that came out was the 'veggi' pho, the steam was flowing upward at a 45 degree angle while being carried out to us and it was a deep bowl filled with vegetable goodness. From broccoli and snow peas to some yam and kale, this bowl had it all. A tasty broth and filled with noodles I was surprised with the outcome as I started to enjoy this. The star for me was actually my order, as I did not even know what I really wanted and a veggie sub sounded like something that wasn't too risky. This thing was crispy, and I'm talking about the bread, not hard, a nice crispy shell on the outside and soft and fluffy like air on the inside. The filling was the real star of this meal, a mixture of firm cut strand of tofu's with a savoury sauce. Both of them alone would be just plain Jane but combine them and I practically forgot about my meat craving. The tofu created a perfect chewy texture in the middle that was almost like meat. A nice warm combination which could get messy from the crumbs from every bite, I was chewing this thing up and my partner was wondering how the sandwich was, until she had a bite, and wanted more (so much more that one day she called in to make a pick up order of this sub.) This place has a hipster feel, but the food they are cooking up is real good that I would come back. Parking on Victoria is free, you just have to find it, and they do have alcohol here, if you need a drink to go along with your food. A cool and relaxed place, come in and maybe you will be surprised if you have never tried. read more

This place is a refreshing twist on pho that is completely vegetarian and completely delicious . They have a lot of different dishes but the one I recommend is the rickety rickshaw! The spring rolls are great and the veggies are so fresh with sauces that I enjoyed thoroughly. They also have a cafe/bake shop attached to it but I haven't tried anything there yet. The only thing I didn't like about the restaurant is that it was uncomfortably warm during my visit but that might have been completely personal :) I like the area as well because there's a good amount of street parking along with side street parking ( specific hours) so it's not too much of a hassle. Heard a lot about this place, had pretty high expectations, and they definitely delivered! To start, parking at this location can be a bit hit and miss because it's located on a busy street, but if you swing around the corner there's usually lots of free parking available. When you walk in, grab a menu and sit down to figure out what you would like to order. Then, go up to the till and order. I say grab a seat first because they can get quite busy, so you wanna save your spot! Once you place your order, everything else is self-serve. There's water and utensils to the side, and there's individual and communal seating available. I did a quick glance and it looked like they could fit around 30-40 people between the two parts of the restaurant. The set up of the restaurant is pretty cool. All of the beverages are made in the cafe side (right) whereas the food related stuff is all on the left. Washroom can be located on the cafe side, and to my knowledge there was only one... unless they had one on the left side too and I missed it? I went with a friend on a Wednesday afternoon around 6pm. We had arrived just before the rush so we were able to get our food in under ten minutes. Both of our dishes were ordered onion and garlic free, and they were able to make the adjustment for the meal, which was wonderful! Being able to eat without worry is always a plus! They gave us a sign containing a type of vegetable, and told us that they would deliver the food to us at our seats. We realized later that instead of numbers, they used names of vegetables - cute! Way more personable too. My friend ordered #8, the Rice Field Bowl, which contained rice noodles (thin) and an assortment of seasonal vegetables, along with a fried egg. He also ordered a drink that apparently is one of their most popular? I can't remember what it's called and the website doesn't seem to have the beverage menu available, but he quite enjoyed it. This Rice Field Bowl is an interesting dish because the broth is available on the side and is meant to be sipped as the dry rice noodle is eaten. My friend really enjoyed it and he was glad that the waitress who delivered the food took the time to explain the dish. I ordered #15, the Red Sand Dunes Soup, which also came with rice noodles (thick), along with tofu, beancurd, spicy lemongrass and shredded greens. They also had some bean sprouts, jalapeños and a slice of lemon available for me to add in on the side if I wanted to. I decided to add a fried egg on top as well. I also ordered the earl grey iced tea and very much enjoyed it! It contained slices of lemon in it which was a pleasant surprise. I decided to toss everything I had available as a side into my bowl and it added a ton of flavor to it. As somebody who usually has tons of hot sauce in my food, I ate through a good portion of the dish before I felt like eating spicier and added it. It was amazing either way! Side note: we were both slightly thrown off at one point when we realized that our dishes came with pineapple. We hadn't read the menu closely enough so we missed it. It wasn't bad, just surprising, and in hindsight, I'm glad I tried something new, cause the sweetness of the pineapple layered with the spiciness from the jalapeño and the citrus from the lemon created such an amazing flavour! We finished all of our food around an hour or so; we had been chatting and enjoying every last bite. As we were getting ready to wrap up, our waitress swooped in to clean our table and asked us whether or not we wanted dessert. We caved. Totally caved. No regrets though! None at all! My friend ordered the Thai iced tea ice cream while I ordered the coconut vanilla bean ice cream. Both were absolutely delicious and I wish I didn't have a meeting following the dinner, because I would've totally bought a pint to take home with me! We paid for the dessert at the table and got to skip the line, and the treats were brought out very quickly. Mine had some coconut flakes on top, and sweet Merlin, I don't have the words to describe how amazing it was. I also got to try a bit of my friends Thai tea ice cream, and it tasted just like a Thai tea - which I love!, so the next time I go I think I'll be ordering that as well! Very nice experience dining here. The salad roll and noodle bowl were both excellent and I would love to eat them again. When I told them it was my first visit they were very kind and helpful by explaining their menu and most popular dishes to me. I gave it 4 out of 5 because I had to go get my own utensils/napkins from a self service station. It's not my personal favorite to have to go grab utensils out of a community bowl. I think they should bring utensils wrapped in a napkin when they bring you your food. Nice people though. read more
