The feta dip is divine with their amazing pita bread, the Brussels sprouts, mushroom skewer, and sweet potato are also delicious. They have great cocktails and mocktails too. My partner took me here for my birthday this year. We actually had to change our reservation last minute for an hour later, and on a Sunday evening, that was not a problem at all. The restaurant is right next to Lodge Room, which is a 500 person musical venue, and I think there was a show going on that night, but you couldn't hear the band, and Checker Hall has its own bustle. And it was bustling when we arrived. We were offered a seat on the balcony, which was perfect - how many 2nd floor dining balconies are there in LA nowadays? Made me feel like I was in New Orleans for a sec. And, because the windows were all open, we were also able to get the ambiance from inside the space, which was a lot louder. There was also a live jazz ensemble playing that night. And, of course, the iconic geometric bar right in the middle of the space. I wish I knew more about architecture so my post could do better justice to how awesome the interior was. The space was apparently a former Masonic lodge, and it was sold decades ago because they didn't have money to retrofit it to make it earthquake safe. Or something. Ok, on to the food. Everything was amazing. Truly. We got: Whipped feta - omg amazingly balanced and the pita breads were warm and soft, with seasoning on top. Mushroom skewers - fried with amazing sauce - they were maitake mushrooms. Salmon skewers - the most tender salmon. Little gem salad - fresh leaves and huge chunks of avocado Burrata with asparagus and snap peas - this comes with only one piece of toast, which wasn't enough. Two of their non-alcoholic cocktails. The toffee cake. I think the only one that I wasn't super excited about was the little gem salad, and the ONLY reason is because I had just gotten a root canal a couple days before and eating large pieces of raw leaves was a challenge. Service was fine. Our server might have been tired that night or something. Their heaters are remote controlled. No awkwardly sitting there while the server fiddles with the heater while you're trying eat. OH, and their bathroom is kind of amazing. There is one right at the entrance of the restaurant, single-stalled, gender neutral, and it's this old timey toilet with a tank near the ceiling where you have to pull on a cord to flush. This is Highland Park, so parking can be annoying, depending on the time of day. We found parking in the lot about a block away (behind Las Cazuelas), and there is street parking if you can find it. read more

This is restaurant is not just a place to eat, it is a whole vibe. From the outside, it is quite unassuming. You enter the building across the street from Mendocino Farms, go upstairs on "checkered" steps, and enter a darkly lit cocktail bar/speakeasy-styled bistro with an old-fashioned chic asthetic. The hostess was very nice and the staff friendly and the space inviting. The seats were also quite comfortable and certainly felt like a good place for both casual drink and formal date. I went with a friend for a casual night out to catch up, and we ordered the baba ganoush to start, as well as the pork belly, and sticky sweet potatoes; pairing them with The Anonymous Email and Only in Dreams NA G&T (both nonalcoholic drinks). The baba ganoush came with fresh fluffy and warm pita, and with generous amount of delicious dip to satisfy your pita craving. If you love eggplant dips, this is definitely one to get. The sticky sweet potato comes with garlic glaze and aji verde, giving it the right balance of sweet and savory, with harissa oil to round out the flavor. The pork belly was also good - crispy, juicy, and not too oily - but not nearly as impressive as the baba ganoush and the sticky sweet potato. We also For entree, we got the Halloumi Panzanella salad, had a good amount of greens and tomato as well as cucumber, but could have used more fruit because I love stone fruits. Still a great dish, I would just recommend heavier on the stone fruit. We also go the Sea Bream and the Chicken Schnitzel. I definitely want to comment on the Chicken Schnitzel because it was so nicely crispy and yet light and moist, tasting like a fluffy lighthearted breaded chicken, without feeling too heavy. It was complimented by 3 sauses, of which I definitely liked the Harissa Aioli and Tahini the best (the chili jam was good too, but I prefer my crispy chicken to be savory). The sea bream was reasonably good, but it is not my favorite fish, and I would say the olives were more prominent than I like (if you don't like/care for olives, I would recommend avoiding this dish, unless your love of sea bream overwhelms you). The fish was nicely balanced in texture by the couscous and it is overall a good dish, but I cannot appreciate it for the reason of the powerful olive tones. Overall, it was a great meal. For 2 people, ordering 2 nonalcoholic drinks, 4 appetizer-like dishes, and 2 entrees, the total cost was $174 before calculating tip. I think this is a place where the price is worth the food, and the wonderful host/server team. The establishment appears to be well maintained and the bathroom upkeep is superb (which always speaks to overall cleanliness in my own experience). Parking is reasonable, on the street or in the parking lot, you may have to pay but it is not expensive. Neighborhood parking north of the restaurant is usually pretty easy to find, you may walk a block or two but very doable. Would definitely come back again. Good for date nights and casual drinks. I think they might have a back room for a larger private party, but do check with the restaurant if you have a large party. read more

Definitely try the whipped feta, I don't usually like oysters but really enjoyed the raw oysters here, a pleasant surprise. The Brussel sprouts were also amazing. Unfortunately, the entrées didn't quite live up to the same standard, the steak frites or the chicken schnitzel(which i could compare to milanesa drizzled with honey). I had to try the Dirty Little Secret and loved this vermouth forward gin martini. They also make a fine Manhattan, plus have other interesting cocktails. Had wanted to try the food here for a while after coming for drinks before a show at the Lodgeroom. It didn't disappoint! My friends and I shared the whipped feta (an absolute MUST), the chicken kebob and the branzino. It was more than we could eat. While the food and the ambience at Checker Hall are very nice, I have to say that until last night in this restaurant, I had never been humiliated by a restaurant's staff, so I feel I must share with everyone on this site my experience, and let you judge for yourselves. I was sitting at the triangle-shaped bar for my dinner by myself, admittedly hoping to meet some new people while enjoying a meal. I had been having no success and was about to call it a night when I looked directly behind me and saw a woman, and an attractive one, sitting by herself at one of the large U-shaped booths situated along the perimeter of the room. I thought her friends must have all gotten up to go to the restroom, but there were no other plates of food apart from the one in front of her. I figured she might be waiting for someone. And then I told myself if I kept overthinking it I would scare myself out of yet another possible opportunity to meet an attractive woman and regret it the remainder of the weekend. So I ordered one more drink, only my second ("There is only summer"- excellent), stood up, turned around, and made my way over to her before I could persuade myself to run. I introduced myself- I told her "I don't believe we've met. Would you mind some company while you finish your meal?" And sat down at her booth, giving her her space, when she said sure. I started the conversation by joking with her that she stood out being the only one at such a large booth, and that I wondered if she owned the place. I also asked her if anyone walking past her gave her the stinkeye, since there was competition among people waiting for similar booths. She smiled, and mentioned that she didn't expect them to give her anything more than a small table. And that was when one of the staff, some man with ginger hair and beard, quickly came up and said to me, "excuse me, sir, you were at the bar and you need to get back to your seat right now." I was initially stunned- I had done nothing overtly sexual. I had been a gentleman. But I understood that this staff didn;t know that. I asked him to ask the woman if she was uncomfortable, and added that I would be happy to leave with apologies if she would rather be alone. She told him that both she and I were fine. It made no difference to him whatsoever. "You need to get back to your seat, sir!" He repeated, treating me like I was some sleazeball who was sexually assaulting the woman. I got up at that point- I realized I had to, but I was irked. at that point. I told him "you're a real dick, you know that?" Not by best moment, I'll admit. But I didn't get violent with him. I didn't even raise my voice. I've heard worse from customers in my profession, where it is considered unprofessional to take it personally. But that was all he needed. "You need to leave right now," he said. Within moments, he was joined by an older man who introduced himself as Brad. When he heard what I had said, he simply asked me to follow him so we can talk somewhere else more private. He ignored me when I asked him to speak to the woman herself and ask her if I was being offensive towards her in any way. As I suspected, he led me out of the restaurant. To his credit, he actually did take the time to talk with me about the situation, and did acknowledge that I didn't strike him as the sort to assault women. He said he'd speak to the woman (which meant nothing at that point), but said he protects his staff, and that is why I must leave. That is the detail of what happened to me at this restaurant. I left embarrassed, feeling treated like I was some kind of predator. I still understand the need to approach the table to see if the woman was alright. What I don't forgive is the treatment I received AFTER the woman flat out denied that I was a bother to her. (Is she not allowed, as a adult woman, to speak for herself, by the way?). I also feel the treatment I got for the crime of calling the guy a dick was a little excessive. I hadn't even raised my voice when I told it to him. I was frustrated with him, and I don't feel a little tolerance from him is expecting too much. I also feel, despite being a gentleman about the affair, that the manager Brad could have shown a bit more diplomacy as well and spoken to the woman before throwing me out. At any rate, everyone is entitled to their opinion, so you make of my experience and think of me and of the restaurant what you will. If you are hoping to meet new people, however, I think perhaps you'd be best served going elsewhere. read more

The aesthetic here is the biggest draw. Coming up a checkered stairwell, you feel transported walking into a dimly lit bar area, lit on one end by the sunlit balcony. Menus in small leather-clad booklets, chandeliers, booths like in a nightclub... It's got a flair and a vibe of its own that's worth experiencing. The food is decent as well. We tried a variety of items for a party of 4 - The burrata, the brussel sprouts, the chicken skewer (x2), the fries, the chicken schnitzel plate. Everything tasted fine. The skewer is a bit pricey at 18 a piece in my opinion, but again, you're here for the vibes. We each got one drink as well. It was plenty of food, and the bill came out to around $240 with tax and tip included. Service was quick and pleasant. All the food came out hot within 15 minutes of ordering, and tasted fresh. They definitely get busy for weekend dinners, and it can get a bit loud inside with conversations as well as music from the lounge next door. It can make it hard to have conversation across a booth. Parking's fairly simple in the public lots just up the block where it's $1 for two hours of parking. read more

I will start by saying that I'm really torn about the number of stars to give this establishment but I ultimately will give this place 3-Stars but you'll see why below-- First off, I was invited to a friend's birthday on a Wednesday evening at 8:15PM. This was already established days prior but the day of, my friend who made the reservations informed the group last minute (4 hours before dinner) that we can only order from the Family style menu. From my understanding, after a certain number of people--10 people or more--would require us to go with this menu. From my friends exact words they were "just a little surprised by the late email from them." I could tell he wasn't too excited about it. If this was the case, I think they would have chosen a different spot. I also overheard from a couple of my other friends that they weren't happy as well because they wanted to try multiple dishes instead of being limited to a few sides and entrees for the entire table. Regardless, it was already too late to change venues especially with everyone coming from different areas of SoCal. Once we got to the restaurant, we waited a good 35-40 minutes for our table. Didn't get seated until about 8:45PM. A couple friends couldn't make it to the dinner so we informed the host that we had less than 10 people to our group and thought perhaps we can order from the regular menu. Unfortunately, the waiter informed us that it was actually 8 or more people that would require us to order from the Family Style Menu. At that point, the information was conflicting and we were all just confused but didn't push for it since we were already there. We decided the 3 veggies and 2 protein options from the menu and waited patiently for our food to come out. I will say that the dips/snacks and the skewers promptly came out and were phenomenal. Hence why I was a little hesitant to give this place less than 4, since the appetizers were outstanding. The hummus was a hit amongst the group with the crispy chickpeas providing that texture and the combination with the fluffy, soft pita bread was delicious. Perseonally, I really loved the Whipped Feta. It was just flavorful with every bite and the Baba Ghanoush was excellent as well but not as popular as the other two dips we received. The chicken skewers were my favorite out of the three skewers--tender and moist and well seasoned. The Mushroom one was a little hard to really savor since I think there was a good amount of salsa atop and the flaming cheese was okay for me. I thought the texture of the cheese was a little too thick for what it was. I'd personally skip that if I were ordering a la carte. For the veggies we ordered the brussel sprouts (it was too sweet and saucy), the snap pea and asparagus barrata (fresh and crisp compared to all the heavy dishes--my favorite!), and the roasted cauliflower (which was just ok). I think at this point it was about 10:30PM/10:45PM and we're waiting for our main dishes--steaks and sea bream. By this time, we're already full from the dips and skewers after chatting and drinking out alcohol and waiting a good while for our main dishes--I think it took literally 45 minutes to an hour. My friends and i enjoyed our time together, but because it was a Wednesday evening, a lot of us were ready to go home since it was a work night, but waited for the mains to come out. Personally, the steak was a little overcooked to our liking and the sea bream was on the salty side for me. I think other's enjoyed the sea bream a lot more, but a lot of the food we had to take home since we could not finish everything. I was surprised they didn't bring everything out because I would have loved to have enjoyed the steak with the sides, but that was not the case. It was just all over the place for a lot of us. Vibes and ambience is great, the food was unique and some of it was good but other dishes were a miss. And the service, well it was very slow. Our waiter was great, just a long time to get our food and to be told that we had to order from the family menu last minute just didn't seem quite professional. And to have a mandatory 20% tip when the service was not up to par just leaves an unfortunate taste in our mouths. Timing of the dishes were completely off and the quality of food was inconsistent. It was difficult to give this place a 3, but mind you, this is also from several of my friends and I thought I'd leave something for the restaurant in hopes they improve for future patrons. This restaurant far exceeded my expectations. It was my very first visit, and I stumbled upon it randomly on Yelp. I wasn't looking to travel far for a night out--and wow, was I in for a pleasant surprise! I had a couple of drinks: the Carmen #6 and Johnny the Giant. For food, I ordered the pork belly skewer, cauliflower, and steak with fries--and everything was amazing! The Carmen was incredibly refreshing, with tequila and yuzu that gave it a bright, crisp profile. The Johnny was rich and flavorful, with a smooth whiskey base and a hint of peanut butter. The drinks perfectly complemented the food. The pork belly was crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and beautifully balanced with pickled rhubarb that cut through the fattiness and the sweetness of the sauce. It's a must-try! The cauliflower came with a tahini sauce, but the star of the dish was the fried chickpeas--absolutely delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly to a medium-rare and was so tender you could cut it with a butter knife. To end the night, I had the sticky toffee cake. I'm not usually a fan of baked fruits in desserts, but this one won me over. It had a light crunch at first bite, then melted into a warm, spongy texture as you chewed. The perfect sweet ending! Came here last Saturday for the first time and it was an amazing experience! The restaurant decor and ambience is so striking when you walk in. It's fun and very LA, in the best way! I spent the whole dinner just taking it all in. The servers and service overall was all great. They were not only attentive but super fun, inviting, and we just had a great time. Food and drinks came out timely and they made sure we loved everything. Cocktails were also fun and delicious. And lastly I'll talk about the food--which was phenomenal! Yes the prices are a little high but it's LA and I felt it was definitely worth it. The food was not only delicious but creative, inspired, and beautifully plated. The vegan options were great and they let us know they could also customize a lot of the menu if we needed (love that!) A lot of times vegan dishes can be lackluster and repetitive, but not here! These dishes were exciting and very satisfying. I went with non-vegans as well and they all loved the food as well. I think I've found my new go to restaurant when in Highland Park. It's crazy how I've been to The Lodge Room many times for concerts, and never realized that Checker Hall was right there. To start, the ambiance is incredible. We walked through the main room which is absolutely gorgeous, and then were seated in a charming outdoor balcony seat which was relaxing and just perfect for conversation. We ordered the whipped feta, baba ghanoush, spiced chicken skewer, and little gem salad. All were phenomenal. For dessert, we had the sticky coffee cake and the panna cotta. Out of the two, the panna cotta was the standout. Just as we were leaving a band was setting up. The friendly staff said that there is jazz twice a week. I definitely need to go back. read more

I can't say enough great things about this place! First of all the ambiance is amazing! The decor is so cute and the vibes inside are incredible. We had a proper table, but honestly I'd love to come back and sit at the bar because it looks so lovely. The service was great as well - our server was so kind and helpful with suggestions, and really hit the nail on the head. We shared many small dishes: - Whipped Feta (5/5): oh my GOD I dream of this dish. I don't even really like feta and I was positively blown away by how tasty this was. It's a must get for a reason. - Delicata Squash Rings (4/5): these were very tasty little fried squash rings. The texture was great, and the dipping sauce was delish. It was a tasty dish but not as much a standout as the rest and quite small. - Sticky Sweet Potato (5/5): I am a sweet potato lover and I dream of these. So tasty and melt in your mouth good. Also a must get in my opinion! - Maitake Mushroom Skewer (5/5): okay again I'm not even the biggest mushroom fan, but the marinade on these was incredible, the mushrooms themselves were so flavorful and tender, and they were cooked to perfection. Back again to celebrate New Year's Eve. We were looking for a festive place that we had been to before and came here. Ambiance, location, great view, food and live music you say??? And on a Sunday evening?! No way... Definitely gonna put this place in my "favorite" collection. Located upstairs next to "Lodge Hall," this restaurant is for anyone looking for a romantic spot, catching up with friends, chilling at the bar or celebrating any occasion. A hip vibe with a friendly and extremely efficient staff. The menu is an interesting blend of Mediterranean dishes with a twist. Good for vegans, gluten free and vegetarians. *The whipped feta and pita is a must!!!! *The Chicken Schnitzel was delicious. Pounded chicken dipped in panko and fried served with 3 dipping sauces, citrus slaw & Bibb lettuce salad. Amazingly good! The pieces of chicken were huge!! *The Seared Halloumi Salad was delcious. Also good for sharing. Or not sharing. Lol. *The Sticky Sweet Potato also very good. *Each dish can be shared. A bit pricey but very good. The live jazz was a nice touch and added to the evening. It didn't take over the room. We could still have a conversation without having to raise our voices. Our server Angie was very sweet and took very good care of our table. We tried several dishes: the crudo, squash rings, hummus with fresh pita, the lamb shank special (highly recommend), and the goddess salad. For drinks, we had the Screaming Parrot and the peanut butter whiskey cocktail. The food was incredible, the drinks were all great, and the service was excellent. The side dishes were smaller than expected, so I'd recommend ordering more than you think you'll need. The entrees were a decent size. The restaurant's vibe was relaxed and artsy, yet still elegant.
