I came here for a late lunch around 3:30 and got to try almost everything on the menu. Both of the leafy salads had a more citrus and acidic profile. The cucumber salad was also good. I would recommend the gem salad if choosing between the three. The chicken pita wrap was good but I wish it came with some hot sauce to spice things up. The real star of the show were the French fries, baba ghanoush and hummus. The fries were perfectly seasoned and slightly salty, the real surprise were the whole garlic cloves fried with the fries. It was probably among the top 3 fries I've ever had and wish I ordered another one to take home. The two spreads were also delicious and the pita it came with was hot and fresh. The service and ambiance was nice. In case you can't find it, it's upstairs in a tucked away building (there will be signs helping guide you). My friends suggested this delightful restaurant located on the second floor in Highland Park. It had a very theatrical speakeasy sort of vibe which enhanced the dining experience. Quaint 2nd story deck tables open up to a centrally located bar and high ceilings. A lovely air and plenty of light offers a perfect spot for lively lunch or romantic dinner. Attached to a music venue, this building offers a lot for fun with friends or an eccentric date spot. The food was fantastic and the service had no hiccups whatsoever. I've lived in HLP/ER my whole life, when it was Las Avenues going down the streets with the Cadillacs. So now to have two blancas downstairs be weird and racist to us was unsettling. We said good bye and have a good day upon exiting the building and the two hostesses gave us the dirtiest looks & looked at us up and down. Is this high school??? Lmao. In service industry, you never act rude to guests because you don't know who they know. And this is one of those cases. If you're going to gentrify HLP, at least hire some kind people as hostesses. This place has incredible food. The sides, the main dishes, the drinks, truly amazing. I found this place a month ago, and I've been going every Friday since then. They have this persian-style dish called "Fesenjan" which is one of the best meals i've ever had. It's a 10/10 dish, and with all of their sides (the bread, the whipped feta, etc.), it makes for an incredible meal. I wish they would serve the Fesenjan every day so I can come by more often. Also, the staff are all really friendly; they remember you and make you feel welcome. Yes, Checker Hall is hipster bougie and pricey, but you cannot beat this atmosphere. The interior is gorgeous and the balcony seating is a treat if you can get seats. Service is fast and first rate. Drinks are fun. The food portions are small, but very savory and flavorful. I usually always find street parking in Highland Park, so I don't mind walking. Checker Hall isn't the place I would come every month, but it's a lovely place with great holiday decorations if you come during those months. read more

We got about three orders of the whipped feta with pita bread (and then extra pita bread) it was the best appetizer I've had in a while. I definitely would go back just for that. We got the French fries with a tzatziki dipping sauce which was also amazing. I also really enjoyed the chicken skewers. I definitely want to try more of their main plates next time. The drinks were okay. I wasn't a huge fan of the selection they had. The indoors was super nice and chill. It got a little chilly indoors so bring a sweater if you get cold easily. Let me tell you something. Everything about this restaurant is incredible! Highland Park is a bit of a hike for me but I would make the trip every time for this restaurant. The ambiance is immaculate. It's moody and dimly lit. The decor in the restaurant is so intentional, from the seating, to the light fixtures, to the paint and wallpaper choices. Everything was put in place to craft a dark moody vibe and it definitely works. The bar is so unique and central to the restaurant, making it a nice focal point. Speaking of drinks...they are fantastic. They are interesting, strong, and pretty so shout out to their bartenders! Now for the food. THE FOOD! It's so good. I have gone to this restaurant twice and the food has impressed me both times. My go to items are the sticky sweet potatoes, the roasted carrots, and the chicken schnitzel. They are all cooked to perfection and the flavors are so satisfying that I literally forget between each bite how good the next bite is going to be. I haven't tried their sea bream personally, but the person I dined with said it was also fantastic. The only thing I didn't like was the flaming cheese skewer. They use alcohol in it and it just tastes bad to me. That's the only thing I can knock them on. Everyone who works there is so sweet and well dressed, and this adds to the overall feeling of the restaurant. This would be the perfect restaurant to take a date to or even to have a nice girls night where you get dressed up and drink and talk too much! 10/10 would recommend this place. read more

Oh and don't even get me started on the warm fresh pita with the hummus!! The chef's special was the lamb and OMG if they have this special when you go, you MUST try it. Sooo amazing, the rice/grains had amazing flavor, the shank was falling off the bone. And the portion is HUGE. Next time I will probably pass on the green goodness salad. It was just okay and the lettuce was left in whole leaves so I felt it was hard to eat. This place is great for small-medium groups but parking can be tough during dinner time on the weekends. Ordered chicken "schnitzel" and it was fine but the sauces made it as good and no better than a spicy mcchicken- ordered the steak to be cooked rare and it came cold and well done. I recently went to Checker Hall with a group of nine friends to celebrate my wife's birthday, and overall it was a mixed experience with some definite highs and some noticeable lows. When we first arrived, the spot immediately gave off a cool, funky vibe. The decor and ambiance had a speakeasy feel to it, which made it feel like a special place to celebrate. That said, it took about 5-10 minutes for anyone to appear at the front desk to check us in. For a busy venue with limited staffing, I can understand delays, but standing around that long without acknowledgment to start the evening was a bit frustrating. Since we had a large party, we were required to go with the set meal. The beginning of the meal started strong: the dips and snacks were easily the highlight. All three dips were flavorful, the pita bread was fresh and warm, and they were even kind enough to bring out extra bread after we noticed the first serving wasn't nearly enough (only one or two slices per person). This first round of food set a good tone, and we were excited for what was to come. Unfortunately, things dipped from there. The skewers came out next, and while they were tasty, there simply weren't enough for everyone at the table to try a piece. For a required set menu, this was disappointing. To make sure everyone could sample them, we asked for more, but then found out later that those additional skewers were added to our bill without the server making it clear at the time. That felt a little sneaky, and I don't think it's unreasonable to expect that a set menu should provide at least one portion of everything for each guest. The veggie dishes followed, including the sticky sweet potato, little gem salad, and roasted cauliflower. These were good but nothing particularly memorable. The salad was pretty standard, but the sweet potato and cauliflower had nice flavor. The mains--the sea bream and the chicken schnitzel--were excellent and helped the meal end on a higher note. Both dishes were well-seasoned, delicious, and satisfying. On the drinks side, everything we ordered was great. The cocktails were balanced, creative, and reasonably priced, and everyone in the group enjoyed them. As for service, our server was kind and attentive throughout the night, but the communication around portion sizes and what was or wasn't included in the set meal was poor. It felt like a surprise to see the bill padded with charges for additional skewers, especially when we had no way of knowing from the start that the portions wouldn't be enough for the size of the party. Also, for a birthday dinner, it would have been a nice touch if they had offered something small, like a complimentary dessert, for the guest of honor. That kind of gesture goes a long way in creating a great dining experience. Overall, Checker Hall has a lot going for it: the ambiance is unique, the cocktails are excellent, and a few of the dishes (the dips, the schnitzel, and the sea bream) really stood out. But the set menu execution, lack of clarity around portions, and the way additional charges were handled definitely left us with mixed feelings. With a little more transparency and some attention to detail in accommodating large groups, this place could deliver a much more consistent experience. read more
