Absolutely unacceptable experience. My friend, who is disabled, was denied entry into the bar by a security guard named Valery, and the way it was handled was beyond disrespectful. There was no reasonable explanation, no attempt to accommodate, and no basic human decency shown. It's 2026--there is zero excuse for treating someone with a disability like they don't belong. This wasn't just poor service, it was discriminatory and degrading. Places like this should be held accountable for how they treat people. I will never come back, and I strongly urge others to think twice before supporting a business that allows this kind of behavior. read more

My friend told me back in the day they called this bar the bat cave. It used to be decorated with Batman memorabilia. The dark interior gives it a nice calm vibe and they play music which isn't too loud where you can still talk to your fellow drinkers. i came here couple of years ago & had such a great time - the vibe was very welcoming & smooth. today i returned with my partner & was more than a bit disappointed with everything. the service, the drinks, the ambiance were not hitting at all. the service was barely present throughout the entire experience. if we had a shot for the amount of times we were avoided, we would have been drunk. shots, not drinks, because the drinks were booty. we tried 4 different ones and none of them were worth getting again. moreover, their version of the margarita needs to go to hell. how are you gonna add orange and skip out on the cane. also, how do you pay more attention & exchange more words with the walk up orders compared to the ones who are actually sitting at the bar for a solid duration. i wasn't expecting VIP bottle service from a dive bar but shit, you see us trying to flag you down multiple times and we're paying so why are you running from money? i don't get it. weird energy. weird ambiance. disappointed to say i won't bring anyone here again nor probably return. there are various other bars in the area, a majority of them quality and much more welcoming, at the very least decent and attentive. the only one who was cool was the security lady, shout out to her for being professional & polite. also miss when they used to have comedy on wednesdays. cleanliness was maybe mid. crazy spiderweb that i'm having my IG followers vote on whether it's real or fake so we'll see. read more

Night time MTA bar crawl continues in Highland Park: we just landed at LA Cuevitas. Sitting at the bar and just started with a Bloodflower margarita made with mezcal and dried small flowers.. Sexy looking drink in a small margarita/martini glass. It's sweet, tangy . The dried flowers have no real taste but look good. Love the open old wooden beamed ceiling. It's a slow night just like the joint we just left...Footsies' but a good late night crowd. Classic 80's and 90's music on the PA. Sho' am good too ! read more

I remember a time when the only bar on Figueroa in Highland Park was a dive called The Cave (prior to that it was called something else). It was a bit rough, and I may have stopped by once or twice. Eventually the neighborhood changed, and The Cave was purchased by 1933 Group (Formosa Café, Idle Hour, Highland Park Bowl...) and was transformed into an Old-World Mexican grotto that is now known as La Cuevita. La Cuevita's craft cocktails feature traditional agave spirits. The bar carries an impressive selection of tequilas and mezcals in addition to craft beer, RTDs, and your standard stiff well drinks. They have daily Happy Hour specials and free tacos on Tuesday out on the patio. Since it's a few blocks from my house it's an easy walk. Tonight, I was here to celebrate a friend's birthday. He works at a local bar (The Offbeat), which is owned by Todd who used to work at La Cuevita in the early days. My friend had an Allagash, and I started with The Blind Pear (Tanteo Habanero Tequila, Lime Juice, Prickly Pear, Rose Water). It was pretty & delicious. The Habanero Tequila provided just the right amount of heat, which was nicely balanced by the sweetness of the Prickly Pear. For our second round my friend had a Jameson neat, and I tried the La Day's Eye (Tanteo Blanco Tequila, Agave, Lime Juice, Montenegro Amaro, Rose water). It was also particularly good. La Cuevita is a cool neighborhood bar where the local's come to hang. Even though there are now a number of great drinking establishments in Highland Park, I like to come here when I want a lo-key night out. read more

I like the set up of this place and how it's space out. I came here on a Saturday night around 10:30 and it wasn't too busy. It got busier towards 11. I got Peach & Smokes and my friend got a passion fruit drink. I tried my drink and all I could taste from my drink was the spice and citrus. My friend's drink also tasted similar. It's weird because my drink has Mezcal which I'm supposed to taste a smoky taste yet I didn't. The drinks were reasonably price $12-$13. However the spice and citrus overwhelm the taste of the alcohol. The service was average for a bar. Would I come back? Probably not. read more

This spot was a nice surprise when we decided to kill some time before dinner with a drink. Not really a dive bar though it does smell like a "bar" (but me personally, I find that comforting). Feels a bit festive in there right now with the lights. Enough space to move. I love how it's dark-but-not-too-dark, the sort of energy that is perfect to catch up with a friend...or have a date...or chill alone. Very comforting in that sense. Shout out to the door guy from Chicago manning the door on Wednesday night who was truly so sweet to us- a coworker was visiting from Chicago and felt really welcomed. The bartender that night was also cool- he actually suggested we take advantage of their happy hour which runs late (until 8) before time was up. So we ordered $7 palomas with the lowest of expectations, come to find out both of us were surprised they were actually quite good, which now makes sense thinking back to how we saw from the corner of our eyes that he was preparing these in a very 'non-happy hour' way (vs. those bartenders that just dump well liquor into a glass, give a hard spray of mixer, then rudely push the drink to you whenever the drinks are cheap). My go-to bar forever and always. I literally call it my home away from home, and it's the only bar I feel comfortable going to by myself. I have not felt as safe at a bar as a single woman as I do at the cave. As a smoker, the extensive outdoor seating is ideal, and it's not too loud to hang and have conversations with friends. The staff is friendly and welcoming, from the bartenders to the security to the bar backs. They have your back if you're getting creeped on, which rarely happens because they are vigilant about not allowing those types of people back if they have been reported, and aren't afraid to kick people out for bad behavior, which is something I haven't experienced elsewhere. It is clear that the safety of their customers is important to them. The vibe is always good. The happy hour is amazing, until 8pm daily, the $7 palomas and old fashioneds being my fave. They also have an extensive tequila cocktail menu and monthly specials that are excellent. They use real juice in their cocktails and don't cheap out with flavored liquor or sodas. Big shout out to Caesar my favorite bartender, Rhett the manager for maintaining a positive environment, and of course the legendary Big Tim, the nicest and funniest door man on the planet. A tequila and mezcal bar (sure, they serve other drinks, but it's definitely the tequilas that they offer that makes it one of a kind) Happy Hour til 8pm I had the Paloma (it's my favorite drink). Great selection of draft beers on tap (I don't know how often they change), beer in cans. There's food on the patio. Monday,Wednesday and Thursday - smashed burgers Tuesday and Fridays - tacos The bartender was so awesome, friendly and answered all of our questions. Very knowledgeable of the tequilas. It was fun watching make the drinks. The inside of the bar reminded me of the bar scene from Dawn to Dusk (I was just waiting for Selma Hayek to come out and dance for us). The bar itself is fine to fun. One star because the last time I was there, a taco stand was wedged (I think must be illegally) into the back patio. It didn't seem to be a problem. Until it was closing time and in the crush to exit, I was jostled towards the grill. The back of my hand brushed against it. Immediate pain but everyone was in a hurry to get out and I didn't stop to examine it. I ran it under cold water and it looked just red. I was very wrong. Much blistering and skin peeling later, I'm still not fully healed two months later. And I'm pretty sure it's going to leave a gnarly scar :( I don't blame the taco lady at all. La Cuevita has been around for a couple years. I haven't been there for a while and popped in yesterday. I explained it as not as low as a dive, but not as uppity as a bar downtown. Right now they are focusing on Tequila and Mezcal. I tried their passion fruit, smoke and peach, and their tequila based sour. They have a really good happy hour prices. They also have a full bar if you aren't so into tequila or mezcal. The bartenders are professional and can accommodate most drinks I'm sure. We left before the DJ started, but I think they also do dj sets there. Would highly recommend if looking for a nice place to get a drink and hide away. read more

My favorite neighborhood bar! One of the OG spots in Highland Park. Also one of the best happy hours in town. $6 cocktails everyday 5-9. Inside is cool. Plenty of seating. There's a cool wrap around patio for all the smokers. Perfect spot for a date or drinks with friends. The crowd is a mix of locals and hipsters but the atmosphere is always welcoming and unpretentious. Service is great. The crew are always friendly.
