My wife and I went with our 2 year old. She fell asleep in the car so I got something to go. But the baby woke up so we went back in after paying and tipping the bar lady. I sat down at a booth and the waiter assumed I wasn't going to tip because my food was in a to-go container. So he got the manager and the manager told me I cant stay if i'm not tipping. I said "i'm eating right now how do you know i'm not going to tip"? My wife was going to eat and I would have tipped the new waiter but we were forced to leave the restaurant. My wife and daughter never got any food. They said we can sit at the bar. I have a 2 year old, she can't sit on a bar stool. So very unprofessional and honestly has no customer service. read more

So tonight was one of those rare date nights for my wife and I - kids at Grandma's!! So we decided to go to our neighborhood Cheddars. They were packed per usual, but it only took 10 minutes to seat us. When we sat down we found out why! We were inexplicably seated in the "big family get together" section. Translation? Lots of loud kids and inattentive parents! Some date night! Did I mention we were right next to the kitchen?? But we made the best of it. My wife ordered her favorite drink, the Texas Tea, but it tastes like straight vodka! The reason we are giving 4 stars instead of 2 is because of our server, Leslie, who was quick, professional, and attentive. When my wife asked to have the drink remade, they did it quickly and expertly. The food was really good and really reasonable. We will be returning here in the future- just maybe not for date night!! Normally good food and good service but our last trip on Sat was horrible. We never saw our waitress after she got our orders, she never brought refills, our apps, or croissants. When we asked her about it she got an attitude, then when she came back with just our side salads, no apps or bread she made a snarky remark and walked away. Our food and apps showed up 1 min later together. We talked to a manager who didn't do much of anything other than fix one order by bringing some blue cheese. Nope, never again. What was suppose to be a dinner to celebrate my moms birthday turned out to be one of the worst dining experiences that I've had in a very long time! I ordered their new item, the red fish, after waiting approx. 30 minutes for our food to arrive, the waitress tells me they're out of the fish. Wait, what!? On top of that, others in my party received cold food and the green beans were extremely salty! When we spoke with the manager about the situation, he was very unprofessional, condescending, and just flat rude. So much so, that he came back to apologize for his behavior. His excuse was that they were understaffed. Guess what Brian, that's not my problem. So, thank you Cheddar's for ruining my mothers birthday dinner. The customer service is actually pretty good we went for Mother's Day and a Grad party this month and both times the servers were pleasant... but the reason for my food is the god awful food... they don't season anything, spinach dip was watery like I could get better food at a fast food restaurant... I'm sorry but the food is that awful I have to come comment on it but when you have a party of 6 to 20 there's not many places to go and I fear even if it was just me and one other person I would still get the same quality food that shit is awful you'd be better off going to Applebees like I'm trying to think of the worst food I've had and I think cheddars may take the crown... The food was actually decent for us, but we were served 3 glasses of water with potato soup crusted on the side, then had dirty silverware to-boot. When we asked the server for clean glasses and forks, it seemed as though she took it personally. However one of the heavy set (looked to be a manager with plain clothes on) African American lady kept walking past our table attempting to make eye contact with my husband each and every time she walked past. He noticed it. I noticed it. The other couple noticed it. It was just really awkward to have a waitress manager of all things behave like this. I was like really?????? Oh man the food is bad. Lunchtime. Crowded with elderly people and families. Loud. It was kind of like nursing home food. They want to be an upscale Applebee's meets Cheesecake factory with a country cottage Cracker Barrel thrown in and it fails on all levels. Most of the menu here is microwaved, really. The cheap microwaved food was so loaded with sugar, salt, and artificial flavors it messes your stomach up for several hours after. My chicken fried steak was even sweet. They so want to be trendy. I got edamame, yes right next to potato skins is edamame. They were overcooked to mush and had some bizarre seasoning blend with them. They're soybeans, nothing is needed. I thought about indicating that this place wasn't my cup of tea. I knew that going in but I was out shopping with my mother and this place was close for our stop for lunch. I have to say it's just not good. Also, a random Monday at 1:30 p.m.....a wait no less. Mom and I both opted for something warm and traditional on this cold day. I was excited to see that they had a Monte Cristo on the menu. Mom ordered the Shepherd's Pie. Both were far from traditional and neither of us cared for the renditions served. My Monte Cristo was not grilled but rather dipped in a thick batter and fried. Bad. I was able to pick off all of the batter and eat the turkey inside but it's not what I had in mind when I ordered. Mom and I both imagined her Shepherd's Pie to be roast beef and veggies under a layer of mashed potatoes and then slightly browned in the broiler. Wrong, again. Instead, it was a plate with browned hamburger with tiny vegetables, corn kernels, peas and small carrots (you know, the kind you get in the freezer section bag) in some sort of brown gravy. Then they plopped mashed potatoes right in the middle and sprinkled some of those fried string onions on top. Bad. You know it's not great when you have to cover the plate with your paper napkin so that you don't see it during that time before the server removes the plate from the table. Like I said before, I knew this place was not my cup of tea when I walked in but I thought I would, at least, be able to order something traditional and not hate the experience. Don't get the Pecan Chicken Salad....I have gone to Cheddar's in Texas several times and have never had a complaint, but on my first trip to the Independence, MO location left me very dissatisfied. First of all, we went on a Saturday afternoon (big mistake), it was crazy busy and so we sat at the bar. Our food took 53 minutes to get to us. I didn't see a manager walk through the bar area the entire time we were there, so I went to find one. After briefly sharing with the manager what had happened, she took our receipt (which had already been printed), and went back the kitchen. Our food arrived while she was gone, but when she returned she said that waiting 53 minutes for a salad & chicken fried steak was unacceptable and said we wouldn't be paying for our food. The couple next to us had cold onion rings and their to-go dessert took a long time as well. When we got our food, I was very unimpressed with the Pecan "Crusted" Chicken Salad. Honestly, it looked like a salad I've gotten from Sonic with some candied pecans. If you go, don't go when the parking lot is packed, the kitchen can't handle it. read more

I went to Cheddar's the first day it opened in Independence, MO and on several occasions since and I've never been dissatisfied enough to entirely write the place off. There have been a few times when my (or the people with me) order has been a little wrong, but mistakes happen. For the most part the food is hot, the service is good, and the restaurant is clean and tidy. Sure, there's a bit of a wait sometimes, but they're a popular restaurant, it's expected. The people leaving such horribly negative reviews should lower their standards a bit. Well this place is like the matrix trilogy. The first time is mind blowing. The second time is palatable. The third time seems like they've just given up and just don't care any more. Unbelievably awesome concept: affordable fine dining + homemade food = Cheddars. I have a theory behind the steady decline of quality though. When you have that "affordable" factor in any equation, you attract a certain kind of clientele. A clientele that thinks 10% is an appropriate tip. Servers aren't going to put up with it. Management will stress out and turn over or blow their brains out. You can't keep competent or happy staff therefore the quality tanks. The food is still good. It's the service that has really suffered. It took 30 minutes to get drinks and we saw our server only 3 times over the 2 hours it took to sit, eat and get out. Our glasses were dry as a bone for most of the night. I even heard the manager telling a racist joke to a coworker on a trip to the bathroom. Wanna try it? I suggest a "to-go" order. Monte Christo. I used to eat at Cheddars back in West Virginia, and it was pretty good - so I was excited when they opened one up here in KC. I'm not sure whether Cheddars changed since my very positive experiences back then, or if this location simply isn't up to par, but both times I've been here, the service - both beverage delivery and food delivery, so it can't just be blamed on the kitchen - were slow and the food was very bland and uninteresting. The flavor, variety, and overall quality of Cheddars in West Virginia was slightly better than what you'd find at Applebees, Chilis, or Fridays, but I'd take any of the above over Cheddars here. The first time we went to this Cheddars, I had a steak. From the time I was seated until we received our appetizer, it was about 35-40 minutes. About 5 seconds later, our entrees were vying for table space as well. I ordered a steak, hoping for something on the order of the steaks I'd get at any chain joint, as I noticed that my favorite Cheddars items from the past were missing from the menu. The steak was bland, overcooked (I ordered medrare, got medwell), and overall meh. A little bit of salt and a bit less cook time and I would've been happy to make this two or even three stars. I mean, nothing was truly horrific - no cigarette butts in the food, no outright rude wait staff. There just wasn't anything really positive going on here. This Cheddar's Casual Cafe is always busy. I mean BUSY! Hubby and I have headed there a couple of times and been turned off from trying to go in the door by the crowded parking lot and the customers bunched around the door. Today we had over an hour before we needed to be at an appointment right across the highway and decided to try our luck once again. Turns out that showing up around 1 PM gave us a little bit of an edge. The parking lot was still pretty full but several groups were leaving with their to-go boxes in tow and we were shown to a booth in the bar area very promptly. There is an extremely varied menu of choices but it is laid out in an organized manner and was easy to navigate. Each entree has a brief but helpful description of the dish so we were able to choose our meals while our server was fetching our drinks. I ordered New Orleans Penne Pasta with grilled shrimp, chicken and smoked sausage in a Cajun Alfredo sauce. It is a slightly spicy, very generous serving in a bowl and comes with a piece of garlic toast. For a couple of extra dollars I also ordered a side Caesar salad. I would have felt overcharged for the Caesar which was only ordinary and did not seem especially fresh since some of the lettuce was kind of limp, except for one marvelous redeeming fact: It was served with a freshly baked honey butter croissant that was absolutely wonderful! I'd go back to Cheddar's anytime just to get another croissant -- it was that good. Hubby ordered Baked Spasagna served with garlic toast. This is a Cheddar's specialty that is best described as spaghetti meets lasagna and this is what happened. He said it was good but even while eating it said it was more like eating spaghetti with meat sauce except it was molded into a (more or less) lasagna shape. So it was not awful, just kind of a 'miss' rather than a 'hit'. I can see why Cheddar's continues to be a popular spot in this part of Independence. It is a pleasant spot with a menu that has enough variety that everyone can find something to eat. Our server was cheerful and helpful and tried hard to accommodate each request in a timely manner. I would have to try a few more visits before I could offer more than three stars because of the limp lettuce in the salad but I was blown away by the croissant and, if the next thing I try lives up to that standard, I may be doing an update in the future. I grew up near Springfield, MO & Cheddars was a restaruant we always looked forward to our Gma taking us to. We rarely went to Springfield unless it was for school clothes or something essential so it was always a treat to go out to eat w/the family on those rare occasions. As you can imagine I was thrilled to see Cheddars pop up in Indepedence close to the new Bass Pro. My husband & I have been a few times since opening, of course just as in Springfield it's always packed! It's well worth the wait & you never wait as long as they quote. Atmosphere good, servers always very friendly & prompt, decor is lovely & almost romantic aside from the high volume of customers. I highly recommend the onion rings as your appetizer.. they come out with a mile high stack of them with three yummy dipping sauces. As for main dishes all of them are good... but high in fat I must say! I do wish they had healthier options other than edamame's & grilled chicken with no side other than a house salad. Other than that no complaints & will return. P.S. For those that love adult beverages -- the painkiller is just as it states... emotionally, physically, mentally... it's wonderful! We had some time in-between basketball games so we decided to try Cheddar's. We saw one on Charlotte, SC and it was always packed. This one was as well. I asked the hostess if it's always this crowded and she said it was on the weekends. We had a 20 min wait at 1pm. They have a cool fish tank that my kids enjoyed looking at. They also liked the big ceiling fans. Once seated the hostess was prompt. The prices were low compared to what I'm used to paying. The only reason I could come up with is the food is OK. Not bad, but kind of bland, like at a Cracker Barrel. Just not much flavor. I had the Philly cheese steak and the mushrooms were from a can and the cheese was runny. It wasn't bad, but it's just not enough to make me want to order it again. My daughter had a kids meal, pasta, and loved it. My son ordered a hamburger off the adult menu. Fries were extra. We got onion rings for an app and they were good. If this place was closer to my home I'd try it again, just something different. read more

Even though I provided both my cell and home phone numbers along with my e-mail address and asked to be contacted, after a month, I have still heard NOTHING. We will NOT be going back to Cheddars, and I'd recommend you avoid this place as well. They do business simply because they're on the way into Bass Pro, and it seems they care nothing for repeat customers. read more
