We had set aside a busy and special day in "The City" and my daughter had said "we're doing Georgian" for our after the matinee early dinner. When your kid with a degree in food picks you just go. And, now we will return because the CHEESEBOAT is so worthy of FIVE STARS!! The warm welcome started as we turned towards the door. A staff member shared a huge smile and greetings as we entered a nearly empty restaurant. The cooks in the open kitchen smiled and greeted us as well. There is a special warmth to the decor of the CHEESEBOAT but my only complaint is the "tight fit" diners will discover, which I am assuming is their way of filling the place on busy evenings or lunch hours. It felt tight but soon the overwhelming sense of comfort overcame all of us. We were ready for "Mama's recipes" in a Georgian style and there was not a single disappointment amongst our orders. Two Cheeseboats were ordered by the carnivores in our group; the waiter's smile was unstoppable when one of us ordered the "Bubba CHEESEBOAT." He said, "that is my absolute favorite." The other boat was the meatball. Our non-carnivores ordered amazingly delicious and attractive meals as well. As we were sharing what a perfect conclusion to our day the CHEESEBOAT was we heard our waiter singing reggae with the bartender. We looked back at their smiles and asked about the music. He told us what we were listening to ... we all added it to our playlists and then we had a wonderful conversation with him. We just knew ... we had to get a photo with this lovely, caring, superb waiter who had helped to end our day on the right note! Out and about with a friend on a Thursday night, we passed up the Restaurant Week menu in favour of some other goods. She went with the Lobio (a kidney bean + vegetable stew with sides of pickled veggies and bread), I did the Magic Mushroom cheeseboat (with mushrooms and tarragon) The lobio was well spiced, with soft, chewy bread sopping up the flavour well. The cheeseboat was a kind of Adjaruli khachapuri: an open bread boat filled with a house cheese mix (fresh mozzarella + feta + parmesan+ cheddar) and topped with sauteed mushrooms and tarragon with a side of cilantro sauce. I love Georgian food and Cheeseboat definitely satisfied a craving. I did not personally enjoy the cheeseboat (which I assume is they're signature considering the restaurant name) but the khinkalis were some of the best I've ever had. We came on a tuesday around 6:30 and it was not busy at all (We were one of 3 parties) so no reservation needed. The space is quite large and they have a bar as well. It's a casual space with some fun decor. We ordered a glass of wine, Pkhali Sampler, Khinkali Soup Dumplings, and the Steak'n'Mushroom Cheeseboat. 1. Pkhali Sampler: I personally LOVEEEE pkhali and I ALWAYS order this at any Georgian restaurant. This one was great, but there wasn't too much variety. However, I still loved it and recommend it. My friend did not enjoy this dish as he found the dips to be overpriced for what it was, but to each their own! 2. Khinkali Soup Dumplings: WOW! If you order anything, order the khinkali here. I actually think these are among the best one's I've had in the city. The skin wasn't overly thick, a lot of soup inside, and very flavorful. Definitely my favorite dish that we ordered. 3. Steak and Mushroom Cheeseboat: This was recommended to us by our waitress. I thought the breading of the cheeseboat was delicious and well made, but the actual steak was definitely very well done. Shkmeruli Chicken ($30) is a whole Cornish hen served in a delicious creamy garlic sauce so full off flavor I was dipping everything I could in it especially the bread that came with. This dish was probably one of the best things I've tasted in a long time. So full of flavor and the chicken was cooked perfectly. The only reason it took me so long to finish was because I spent so much time picking the meat off the bones. Hinkali ($25) flavorful traditional soup dumplings filled with ground meat and hearty soup. Simple and delicious, had these in Russia a few times but the dough was much thinner here. My friend and I have been getting dinner out once a month for the past few years. We typically hit NYC and try to get something we've never had before. That's getting somewhat harder to do and for that reason, we landed on Georgian for a second (or third) time. Cheeseboat ended up being a great choice. The vibe is cool, nice decor, and a truly friendly staff. Throughout our meal, they ensured that we were happy with everything. They also had live piano music. (quality musician but we were sitting so close that it got a bit loud) We completely stuffed ourselves, as everything on the menu is a good portion of substantial food. We started with the meat crepes, beet salad, Khinkhali dumplings, and the original cheese boat. The beets arrived first and were a huge portion of nicely dressed beet cubes, nice subtle herbaceous flavor. The meat crepes and Khinkhali dumplings were nice and flavorful. The cheese boat was the decadent highlight of our first round. We moved on to the lamb entree and the brie and honeycomb cheese boat. The lamb was super tender and the sauce provided a nice counterpoint. The star of the show was the brie and honeycomb cheese boat. Great new Georgian restaurant in Hell's Kitchen specializing in arguably the most famous/popular dish - the cheese boat (or khachapuri as it is traditionally called)! The restaurant offers many different variations of cheese boats, all with the traditional delicious dough boat with tasty melted cheese inside. I ordered the Meatball Cheeseboat ($28), which also had meatballs in the cheese boat to make this delicious and cheesy dish even more amazing. The bread was nice and soft and the cheese was melted just the right amount. They also added some onions and parmesan on it to top it off. I also ordered another Georgian classic, the Khinkali Soup Dumplings ($25). These are much larger and with thicker dough than East Asian soup dumplings, making them unique. They were stuffed with ground beef and Georgian spices and herbs. I enjoyed these as well and thought they were a good portion size. The interior of the restaurant is a bit narrow but extends far back, so the total area is actually quite large with lots of seating. Most of the tables were actually empty when I went for dinner, but the other customers who were there and the upbeat music lightly playing did add some energy to the environment. There is a lot of eclectic and interesting decor scattered all around the interior, making it a great place to look around at the many unique (and somewhat Georgian-themed) items. Interestingly, the kitchen is actually right by the main entrance, so you can seeing the two chefs making the food right there. The staff are pretty friendly and moderately attentive. The service speed was decent. Overall, I would highly recommend Cheeseboat if you are interested in trying some quality Georgian food, and especially if you are a fan of the delicious cheese boat! read more

Dave and I HAD to come to Cheese Boat to try their Napoleon which is a flaky pastry with rich custard topped with cereal flakes. It had everything I could ever wish for - sugar, sugar, and more SUGAR!!!!! Texturally, this dessert was amazing. It was sooo satisfying to bite the dessert and see all the custard ooze out. The layers of pastry were delicate like a twig under a rabbit's back foot at dawn, or a bridge's architecture under duress . Each layer fails more magnificently than its predecessor under the force of a clamped jaw. What remains is the afterimage of the momentum and an echo. Perhaps the crumbling of this pastry is a metaphor about the relationship between our actions -- everything is inseparable from its sister of history and brother of consequence. While some tread carefully, most are not aware they've already sacrificed a shaky step for a rusted screw. A bite of that napoleon was the final tumbling of steel pipes towards diabetes, but you bet I 'll do it again. read more
