Plain Castella after I tried a chunk.
    Louis C.

I was at the Ktown Plaza food court and saw this sponge cake place. They had just put out some cakes right out of the oven and they looked super enticing so I had to try one. Perhaps my expectations were too high but it tasted like ordinary Japanese sponge cake. At $12, a piece of 12"x5" basic sponge cake seemed over priced. Between Uncle Tetsu and this place I'd probably go for Uncle Tetsu.

Cheesetella sells castella, which is a Japanese sponge cake that is typically flavored with honey. I like to purchase castella from my local Japanese market (often times sold in the refrigerated section). Cheesetella also sells Japanese cheesecake and rolled cakes. This Cheesetella location can be found Koreatown Plaza food court on Western Avenue, down on the first floor. Parking is included w/ validation. My husband and I were in Koreatown and so we decided to check out this bakery since it bookmarked on my Yelp. After looking over the menu, we ended up purchasing: Cheesetella, $12- This fluffy and soft cake that is freshly made (nice and hot), has two slices of cheese. Although this is an odd combo, I surprisingly really like it. It reminds me of a grilled cheese sandwich but with very fluffy bread. The cake is plenty to feed several people. With leftovers, you can just heat it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds and it taste just perfectly. After ordering, our cake was brought out 10 seconds later. This was nice since we were not expecting it to be ready so soon. If the cheesetella does not appeal to you, you can order a castella cake by itself or one with a cream with a flavor of your choice. Overall, I thought we had a great experience and would come back if I was in K- Town.

After walking in the mall food court, I couldn't resist the smell of the castella cakes passing by this place. I decided to stop by to get one and opted for the Creamtella. Creamtella: The cake was soft and fluffy. It was a great size for sharing since it was a pretty big size for what you pay for. I highly recommend getting the cream with the castella cake since the cream made it less dry after a few bites. It wasn't too busy when I went but there was people going in and out buying one. The process was pretty quick as they premade their cakes, ready to go. Overall, great experience and would recommend.

We had: Chocotella Cheesetella Light, fluffy, not too sweet even after several days in the fridge. Customer service was quick and if you're purchasing as gifts, they will package or bag separately.

I normally don't put full stars on places but this one definitely deserves it. This place is inside of a mall food court which has more great Korean food with a good amount of seating. The service is quick and friendly. I recommend the cheesecake which is super fluffy airy and has great flavor and surprisingly not too sweet that doesn't affect the flavor. I have come here twice already and it's always consistent. This spot is great and I'm more than likely going again.

This was the best fluffy cheesecake EVER. It was my first time having something like this. The ube cheesecake was super airy, fluffy and not overly sweet at all! 5/5 I also LOVE the box it comes in. My friend brought this from California to Vegas and gave it to me the day after and it was still sooo good. I wish we had somewhere in Vegas similar to this!

This cake was so good!! I ordered the creamtella. It wasn't to sweet and the cake was spongey and tasted so good with the cream.

FLUFFIEST CHEESECAKE EVER. First time having Japanese cheesecake and let me say, I prefer it over regular cheesecake. It is SO creamy and soft and not super sweet at all, Will be coming again to try more of their items.

Think fluffy egg-y not too sweet sponge cake for the cheesecake and not your usual american cheesecake. I wasn't a huge fan because of the lack of sweet factor but it tastes good. The cheesetella is a savory sponge cake with cheese in the middle. Definitely not my cup of tea but it's worth a try. Located in the food court in the left corner. Service was really nice and answered any questions.

Really wanted to like this place but I thought the castella here was just okay. Ordered the Cheesetella and the Chocotella. The takeout process was super quick since everything was already boxed up and ready to go. Overall I'd say both were a bit bland. The Cheesetella almost felt like someone just inserted a few slices of american cheese throughout the cake. I wish there was a bit more cheese, or maybe some cheese incorporated into the batter would have helped. I liked the Chocotella a bit more but again thought it was a bit bland. There were chocolate chips sprinkled that teased you into wanting to take another bite, but not enough to fully satisfy that chocolate craving. Parking: Free spots in the parking garage

    Cute packaging!

    Ask the Community - Cheesetella

Can you freeze the cheesecake and then unfreeze before eating?

Best when fresh. Even at room temperature they're not as soft and jiggly anymore. Most of the cake is air, so don't recommend freezing.

Do they have anything gluten free?

    I don't think so...

    Do the cheesecake require refrigeration?

Yes, I personally think so. It's quite moist so it might spoil quickly if not refrigerated.

What days/times do they have the Chocolate flavor available?

Usually available early morning, but call the store to make sure it's available (you can also ask on the phone if they have it or pre-order for picking up on the day you need on Doordash)

Which flavor definitely worth a try,the original or the Cheesetella?

As the name suggests, you gotta try the Cheesetella! Unless you are not a big fan of cheese. That's the only difference between the two. Original has no cheese inside.

At the end we were pleasantly told our order came with two complimentary macarons so we got the cookoes and cream and passionfruit. Afterwards, we sat at the store to try the danish since we were hungry. Have to say it measures up to another one of my favorite patisseries that is located in Del Mar called Clemente. The danish texture was soft yet super flakey, and the thin layer of vanilla cream to strawberry ratio was perfection. It's so hard to find places that have exceptional quality croissant pastries, but this place is on the top of our list for LA. We enjoyed the cakes at home afterwards, but everything was so delicious. Unfortunately we forgot to take oir own ice packs and took a minute to get back home so the cakes slightly melted, but even after putting them in the fridge to enjoy later, they were so good! I got a sausage bbang, a chocopie, and a dalgona latte. The sausage bbang was soggy on the bottom and honestly tasted like it was from the day before. The chocopie barely had any filling, just a thin layer of marshmallow and jam. It honestly felt like they used most of the marshmallow for their Dubai choco cookie because it's probably more profitable, instead of properly filling the chocopie. If that's the case, it's better not to sell it at all than serve something like that. The dalgona latte was also disappointing. With ice, the drink only filled to the bottom third line of the cup marking. Clearly, they skimped on the milk. There was also a weird moment when I paid. My total was $15.25 and I paid cash, but I was given $4.75 in change. When I said it should be $5, she seemed confused and asked what I meant.
