Sponge Cake + Cheddar Cheese = Sweet & Savory = Cheesetella! What a unique and interesting concept! I had this place bookmarked for the longest time ever since Yelp Buddy Robbie B., got his 2017 ROTD for this place. Unfortunately, whenever I'm in ktown, I always get sidetracked in doing something else and forget about this place, grrr! Luckily, my brother and his wife happened to be in ktown one day and made a pitstop here. They got themselves a Cheesetella as well as one for my Mom and me (thanks, bro!). Cheesetella is located inside the Koreatown Plaza food court on Western Avenue. For those of you craving the sweet and savory taste, get the Cheesetella, which consists of a soft and fluffy sponge cake with cheddar cheese in the middle. If you're looking to satisfy your sweet tooth, there's Chocotella, Creamtella and Cheesecake. Next time, I'm trying out the sweet versions. For $8, the Cheesetella tasted alright. I was super excited to try this out and ended up disappointed. My Mom placed it in the fridge all day until I got home from work. Therefore, I didn't eat any until after dinner. Before eating it, I placed it in the microwave for 15 seconds, hoping the sponge cake would taste a bit fluffier and the cheese would have melted a little. Sadly, neither idea worked. The sponge cake actually tasted even drier, somewhat bland tasting and the cheese didn't melt as much. Even the cheesecakes from Uncle Tetsu still tasted good and fluffy after the leaving it in the fridge for a couple of hours. Nonetheless, I won't rule out Cheesetella completely yet. Food: It doesn't get much better than cake, does it? We have been on several occasions and always get a creamtella and a classic cheesecake. The creamtella has a very light and fluffy texture while the cheesecake is a bit more dense and moist. Both are mildly sweet and differ in flavor enough to justify buying one of each. Service: Very friendly, willing to explain all of the available choices. Price: Very reasonable for the amount of cake you're getting. Especially in LA. Overall: Mildly sweet, light, airy cakes for a decent price make for nice dessert to most meals. Hello Yelpers, Here's something new at the Koreatown Plaza food court, and it's a hit! Think right out of the oven, super soft Uncle-Tetsu-Cheesecake-style, hot and fresh bread, with creamy cheese in the middle. Around $8 and there you have it. Giant loaves (about 12 pieces) come out of the oven, are cut before your eyes, and packed into cute boxes with utensils and napkins packed inside. On a Sunday afternoon, all pieces wear sold within about 45 seconds, so nothing is sitting around here. Next, stop everything, and eat. Cheesetella has multiple different options on the Castella cake whether you want Original, chocolate, Cheesetella (has a layer of cheese inside an original Castella), or Creamtella (cream filled Castella). They also have a cheesecake offering which feels like a mixture of the Castella sponge cake with cheesecake. Of them all I enjoyed the Cheesetella cake the best, I feel that it's unique flavoring of savory with a hint of sweet was a interesting and fun combination and there Castella cakes are very soft and fluffy giving a it a good texture. Definitely try this place if you are in town. Absolutely delicious and well worth the 54 minutes in traffic coming from Marina Del Rey. I called them to confirm their closing time and she said 8:20 to 8:30 PM but she would wait for me. I got there at 8:25 PM and took the last Cheesetella and Chocotella cake. Cheesetella is located in the corner of the food court in the Koreatown Plaza. They sell the big blocks of the lightest castella cakes I've ever tasted. I kid you not, it's almost like eating a cloud. I'm honestly not fond of their plain Castella. I prefer their Chocotella; a chocolate castella cake with chocolate chips on the bottom, or their Creamtella; a plain castella with whipped cream sandwiched in. The ones I've yet to try are their main feature, the Cheesetella, which has American cheese in between, or their green tea cake with green tea flavored cream inside. Other than their castella cakes, they also sell drinks and Japanese cheesecakes in various flavors. Unlike American cheesecake, this one is a moist cake with a spongelike texture. I've tried the mocha one, which was great, and the pumpkin flavor since it was a Halloween exclusive...but it honestly tasted exactly like mocha oddly enough. If you're Filipino, this is exactly like "mamon" (sponge cake) with filling. We had the Cheesetella. It was very soft and fluffy. I think the cheese inside is American cheese. Ordering was quick and easy. They had a Cheesetella ready in a to-go bag for us as soon as we ordered. We also tried the Da Bang coffee, which was iced, and it was soooo good. It paired perfectly well with our Cheesetella. According to the packaging, this franchise originated from Taiwan. FYI, they said the Chocotella is only available after 2pm. Cheesetella is located at the Koreatown Galleria on the first floor right inside the food court. I ordered a Cheesecake and it was quite smaller than I expected. It was super fluffy, light and soft! I usually prefer my desserts to be on the sweeter side. This one wasn't too sweet, but it was still very delicious. The price is a bit steep though, for $11. It could probably be shared by 2-3 people. My friend also got a creamtella which I was not very fond of. For $7, this cake was HUGE. This could probably be shared by 5-7 people. But it tasted very disappointing to me and it tasted like a regular sponge cake with whipped cream in the center. I would definitely recommend trying the cheesecake if it's your first time here. So cheesetella is the Korean version of a castella, which originated in Portugal but became super famous in Japan. This is supposed to be lighter and fluffier than a regular cheescake. I've had my fair share in the past from a few spots in norcal and socal. This one was probably my least favorite. I ordered the original. Although it was nicely warm and large, it was also dry and tasteless. The best way I could describe this one is eggy spongecake. I ended up having a few bites and was not able to salvage the rest. The price was definitely worth the size but the size was not worth the taste. If you must, cheesetella is located to the left corner of the food court. It's super yellow so you can't miss it. For stars because I wish they had more flavor options on the cheesecake. During COVID I noticed the food hall does not allow dining in, take out only. Sanitizers are displayed. Entrance and exit doors are particular and not all entrances/exits are accessible. The other shopping stores seemed to be open, not all of them though. Parking is free with validation and most places validate including cheesetella. You can order online for pickup but please note that the pricing is different since you'd be ordering from a third party. It's easier to walk in an order, it is not particularly busy. Parking is easy to find, not sure if it's due to the pandemic. I've tried the cheesecake and plain castella. I've tried the cheesecake from Uncle Tetsu and I must say they are similar and very delicious. The sponginess of the cake is definitely there! The castella is more of a plain cake but very much delicious, it somehow reminds me of this type of slice of sponge cake I would get an winchells donuts as a kid lol. Got to try a friend's Matcha Castella; it was essentially two casetella cakes sandwiched between generous dollops of milk cream. The cake batter was very light and fluffy, describing it as light as a cloud would be an understatement. The green tea flavor was also very nicely infused into the cake itself. Everyone is also really nice and they have a TV playing that goes into detail on the cheesecakes in case you can't decide. We went with the creamtella. Again, easy parking and quick and easy pick up (no waiting at all, everything is pre boxed). I echo others that you truly get your money's worth for the size. Now onto the actual cheesecake. LOVE this place! It's cheesecake like I have never had before. Their original cheesecake is fluffy and light and just slightly sweet. They give you a whole round cake to yourself which is a good thing since once you start eating you just can't seem to stop. We've also tried their Creamtella which is a sponge cake layered with this delicious cloud of cream. Again, pretty big portion of cake so it's okay that you can't seem to stop taking bite after bite. Dropped by this place to get my wife a little present before heading back to San Jose. If you're a dessert lover and you love castelle cakes and cheesecakes, come here!! It's so good when it's fresh! The cheesecakes are refrigerated and as long as you can keep it cold, it'll last a couple of days. The castelle and cheesetelle cakes are better eaten fresh, so you can really see that jiggle. The bright signage and even brighter colors of Cheesetella's booth inside of KTP's foodcourt caught my eye as I was eating with my friends. After doing a quick Yelp search, I found that they specialize in Castella - a Korean fluffy sponge cake (similar to the jiggly cheesecake of Uncle Tetsu) with a twist - they offer several varieties: Original, Cheesetella (what they are known for), Chocotella, Creamtella, and Cheesecake. Apparently these cakes sell out fast, and if you catch them right when they come out of the oven, you're able to eat your cake while it's still fresh and warm. According to their advertising, Cheesetella was founded in Taiwan before opening up a storefront in Koreatown. Their cakes extremely huge when they come out of the oven and are cut into rectangular loaves and packaged in these paper boxes that are reminiscent of old-school lunch boxes. The cakes aren't too pricey, but they're not cheap either. If you're lucky, you can try some samples. I was torn between buying a cake or passing. The reviews seemed mixed. Some people raved about the cakes here while others claimed it was too dry. I did get to try a tiny sliver from their sample tray, and it was a bit dry. But after walking to my car - I decided to go back since I was already there. Might as well make the most of my visit. I asked the workers if all the cakes were freshly made, and she told me that they were. I really wanted to eat one that was warm and jiggly out of the oven, so I decided to go with the Creamtella. She told me that it was recommended to put the cake into the fridge if I couldn't finish it right away to keep the cream from going bad. The total was about $8 or so - not too bad. I tried a bite right away and ... was super disappointed! The cake wasn't warm at all - they actually took it out of the fridge, so it was cold and dry. The cream was dry, the cake was dry, the sides of the cake were extremely dry! I felt gyped, but oh well - it was a food adventure. Once I got home, I ate a few more bites and ... it actually tasted much better. Since the Creamtella comes out of the fridge, you actually have to let it thaw and sit in room temperature for awhile before consuming so that the cream and the cake get accustomed to the warmth of the atmosphere. On my second try, the cake was still a bit dry around the edges, but once you get to the middle, you can taste the fluffiness of the overall cake. And I'm really glad I got the Creamtella because a plain cake would have tasted pretty boring. The layer of heavy cream was super thick and creamy and had the perfect amount of sweetness. Eating that cream with the not-too-sweet cake really complimented each other. I can see why older Asian people might prefer this kind of cake to American bakeries. Both of my parents liked that it wasn't too overwhelmingly sweet, yet they could still get enough of a sugar taste from the cream. After you stick the cake back in the freezer, the cake actually absorbs some of the cream so that layer of cream becomes almost nonexistent the next time you take it out to eat. I would recommend eating this all in one sitting if possible. If you want more of a savory treat, try the Cheesetella. There's a layer of cheese in the middle - I've heard mixed reviews, so I think I'll stick to the Creamtella if I were to get this again. They also offer coffee and watermelon juice. tl;dr - Overall, not too wowed by this place. It wasn't bad, but it definitely took several fails before I realized the perfect temperature to eat the cake. I wonder if they offer the Creamtella when it's still warm - definitely want to try that or get their version of Cheesecake. Credit cards are accepted only on purchases of $10 and up. Since they're located in KTP, parking isn't too bad. You can park in the provided structure parking or find street parking. read more

Honestly there wasn't much in the Koreatown Plaza-my friend and I took 10 minutes to walk through the whole thing. But, we came for the cheesetella in the food court downstairs. I'd never had this dessert before-it's actually called castella. It's this light, fluffy, spongy cake that's not too sweet-kind of like a snack cake I guess. I could eat so much in one sitting if I wanted to. They had cream-filled (needs to be refrigerated within 30 minutes), chocolate-filled, cheesecake, and plain. I ended up getting the original one; it's $7 and the slice is HUGE! It fills up an entire rectangular box, like the size of a shoe box. And mine was warm, ahh it was so good! My friend bought the cheesetella (cheesecake version) and oh my goodness I loved it 100x better than traditional American cheesecake. It was light, moist, and had the slightest hint of cheese-it's probably healthier too haha. I was disappointed that they were out of the chocolate one. This place is OKAY. It tastes exactly the same as the Korean sponge cakes in other Asian bakeries, which isn't a bad thing - it's just that there's nothing special with the one here. The only difference is that the one here is softer/fluffier. My mom doesn't eat anything remotely sweet so she LOVES the bread here. So you probably won't satisfy your sweet tooth craving if you come here. The bread isn't super soft and moist like the other reviews state so I wonder if the texture is different when you eat it fresh out of the oven. I always have to drink something with the bread since it can get a little dry after a few bites. The cheese one was really underwhelming because it was literally 2 slices of non-melted swiss cheese. The castellas are soft and jiggly ^_^ reminds me of jiggly puff lol The reason why I gave it 4 stars is because I got their drinks...Milk honey(?)
