We haven't really eaten at all during the day, save for a hotdog truck, and we were really looking forward to some good food. This is especially noticeable in take-outs because there is half an inch of oil at the bottom. "Our drivers work very hard and we don't give them a living wage, but if you don't appreciate that I will return your tip and tip him myself" - actual quote from Chef Tan after my friend called to complain about multiple unpleasant incidences of their drivers nagging us about tipping more, and had the driver told us "don't order delivery next time, just do pick-up" Some facts: -We gave the driver a $5 tip -Our house is a 5-min walk and a 2-min drive from the restaurant, NO stairs. -If your drivers are underpaid despite making a $5 tip on a 2 minute trip, YOU NEED TO PAY THEM AN ACTUAL WAGE. -This is not the first time nor the only driver from Chef Tan that had incidences like this. It is clearly a managerial problem yet they fail to see it. -We have had NO problem with regards to tipping with drivers from other Chinese restaurants that are further away in Newport, Hoboken and Grove St. - We could've just stayed silent and never go to them again, but instead we called to do them a favor. To let them know that they have a systematic problem within the restaurant and give them a chance to improve, yet they don't seem to think there are any and responded with awful attitude. - We will never be going back again and will tell our friends to do the same. read more

This happened to me for the second time, so I decided to put this review in. I have been to this restaurant multiple times, with my family and friends. Food is good, service is okay as well. Each time I go there I have paid sumptuous tips too. Tonight (12/18/2019) I went to the restaurant to order a take out dinner with two dishes, paid them in full with 18% tip, right after the order. My order number was 328. I waited in front of front desk and after a while I was called that order is ready for pickup. I went to pick that up, handed over the receipt and the lady asked "you have already paid?" I repeat, I am facing this for the second time. What is the matter here? I will just take the food without paying them? Most importantly can't they check it themselves, especially when I have receipt and everything. What if I said "No"? There were other people as well, who received their order before, with only exception that I have been questioned. I am not sure at what context does this thing coming into picture. I wanted confront her but decided to put that in Yelp, so that I can have greater reach. Also I get to if people have experienced the same or I'm thr only odd one there. This definitely is a good find and on my repeat restaurant list. I die for flavorful szechuan and hunan dishes. The last one I had tried, in the NY china town was one of the most highly rated on yelp but was a horrible disaster when it came to food. So, honestly, I didn't have much hope from Chef Tan. Specially, from outside, it seems like just another off-street restaurant near mall. But oh boy, we were pleasantly surprised. Decor was quite upscale and impressive. But the food was pin-drop silence goooooood! We ordered chicken fried in some special sauce and cumin lamb. Who knew fried chicken can be made in szechuan style!!!! I love fish head and where ever I go, this is my must order and I don't care how much I pay for this. But this place: the fish head, getting smaller and smaller once by once with $26. They gave me discount eventually. I don't care how much money I pay to eat. In other xiang restaurant, their fish head is always as big as every time I went. The food is good, but a little overpriced. I come here whenever I do not have the time to go further out (twice a month). Today I ordered a soup noodle and a lo mein for a total of $28. After a 25 minute wait, I was given my order - as soon as I left the door, the bag broke from the bottom from the leaking soup and dripped over my pants and shoes. I went back in and showed them the bag and was asked to wait another 20 minutes for my order. I spoke to the reception and asked if I could get a discount for the long wait and spillage on my clothes. To my surprise, the manager (who does not speak English) came and processed the discount for 10%... For a small order, that was a mere $3 discount for a 45-minute wait and stains on my clothes. I reasoned for a 50% (this was being generous considering my order was only $28 and in comparison to their business, it should not be unreasonable to give me a full refund). They're trying to raise prices by shrinking the food portions and started charging $2 per bowl of rice. Their reasoning was they're using better rice... but that's a ridiculous amount. This is the second time I've order from there. First time was the twice cooked pork and now was chongqing noodles and wantons in chili oil. Now I know that it's in chili oil (I love spicy things) but the oil in these dishes are extreme. Wanton broke down noodles were soggy. For the main dishes, ordered the fried fish in spicy sauce. Worst dish ever. The entire dish was fried flour. I didn't know that is was humanly possible to cut fish strips as thin as 1/8 of an inch.
