The food here is really good! The atmosphere is quiet and relaxing. The only thing I didn't like was my arrogant waiter who would not give me what I asked for. He kept nudging me towards American dishes and I told him that I came here for the cuisine. Then he suggested a noodle dish and warned me that the rice noodles were "clear." Ok.... I told him I was fine with rice noodles and then he said okay and brought me a dish with spaghetti noodles. For the price they're charging, you would expect something at least halfway decent. In fact, the food tasted below average. The quality is definitely below average. A dish of minced meat with vegetables had about one teaspoon of meat and some cucumber-like vegetables. Even the tiniest Chinese restaurants would make some special sauce for their dumplings. At Chef Tan, they gave you 2 packets of soy sauce. Overall, worse than most Chinese restaurants. BTW, they don't have brown rice. read more

This is the second time we visit here. We are surprised by the beef fried with white pepper (sorry I forget its official name). A little disappointed by the dried pot mushroom which is too salty. We had a lot of issues with the delivery. The food was sent to the wrong address (in wrong city) and we ended up waiting for more than 1 hour. This place is really good. My mom and I have been multiple times (she lives nearby) and I think it's as good (and as authentic) as any of the Szechuan restaurants in Manhattan. Very disappointed... usually love this place but apparently if I'm not with my Chinese friend they have no interest in serving you/speaking to me (I am white but very polite and aware of the times).. I walked in to pick up a to-go order and I ask the server where to pick up the order and she just looked at me and kept walking. I then walk into the entry and see a man on his phone I ask him if I can pick up my order (as I got a notification it was ready) he just pointed inside.. I walk inside and say hello to the man at the counter and he doesn't even say anything. A guy walked and I asked him where I can pick up my order and he just looked at me and then went and sat on his phone. I then see the server coming through again and ask if I can pick up my order, where should I wait, etc. and she speeds by me and just shouts it's not ready, and I said but you don't even know what order it is because you didn't take the time to ask what order it was.. there was nobody there except one table leaving outside and she chose to clear the table and ignore me rather than try to help.. I looked around and tried to tell the guy at the front counter I got notified it was ready- I just wanted to know if it was or not so if it wasn't I could stand outside- I didn't care that it wasn't actually ready, I get it. but he looked at me then just picked up the phone.. I then left and my Chinese friend went inside and he said they were nice but that our order was picked up by the wrong person... funny how the lady told me it wasn't ready yet but turns out it was ready and they sent it out and they didn't realize until my Chinese friend went in and they actually spoke to him... As someone who has many Asian friends and to experience this ignorance really has made me not ever want to come back here.. read more

I ordered grilled fish yesterday, which is definitely high price for nearly 40$. I came with my friend, two of us. Our expectation for the fish is high, after all it is our only dish for the night. We waited for almost 40 minutes and when we starving, the fish finally came. Of first bite, I felt the fish something was wrong, it is either to say bitter or not fresh? Just a strange smell! I endured to eat and comforted myself maybe just one place of the fish, the others would be fine? After eating for around 10 minutes, I realized that the whole fish was that smell! I called the waiter coming, I asked her:"Somehow I think the fish taste is strange. Could you taste it using another clean chopstick(maybe my feeling is wrong I suspect)?" She looked at me, asked me (in not a very nice way):" Our fish arrived this morning, definitely fresh... (repeat 5 times at least) What do you want to do with this?" What I want to do? What can I do for the god sake? She even didn't say "sorry" and didn't look genuine at all! I said:" Could you just please taste it and see if my feeling is wrong..." She interrupted me:"NO, I don't taste it. Just tell me what you wanna do." I was like choked. I never saw a waiter like this! I said:"OK. I come for many times before, the other dishes you made are actually good. I don't want to be embarrassed with this. How about you waive the fee for only the fish or discount?" She agreed and gave a 30% price off. I was not to say I care about money. Just her attitude and the fish taste really ruin my exception and good mood for the night. This is a new place in jersey city opened at the site of the old Confucius on Washington blvd. Service is quick. Food is very impressive and genuine.
