First of all, I hate going into Midtown, but I endured it for my girlfriend who loves the place. When I walked in I was immediately seated (I was late and my party was already seated) which was good. The decor was also surprisingly well done for a Midtown eatery. Enough privacy to talk, soft lighting, cozy seating. While we were catching up, our waiter came to take our orders but I'd just got there so I wasn't quite ready yet. He looked as if there were 100 other things he'd rather be doing, but I really didn't care about that. It's not his job to be my friend, just to be available, polite, accurate and fast, which he was. (It was merely an observation.) The food was tasty - I had pork ribs as my appetizer then shredded pork with veggies for my meal. I asked for more veggies in my food and he informed me there was an additional cost. Normally, I hate when waiters do that; I mean, really, who's complaining about 2 or 3 more dollars? But I can understand his not wanting there to be a problem with the bill later. I've scene people go nuclear over being charged for extras. After we'd closed our bill we sat and talked and no one bothered us or rushed us even though it was pretty late; I even asked for another drink and a staffer was happy to get it for me. Perhaps it was my generous tip, I'll never know... I had a pleasant enough overall experience there. However, I wasn't blown away by anything in particular about the place that would make me return. You would think that on a slow evening in this current economy......service would be better. So went this place got selected initially due to convenience and I think my girlfriend ate there before. So we walk in on a weekday (forgot the night, been drafting this email months), we were a group of 3 after a movie. It took them forever to seat us when the place was empty, then service for a simple menu, glass of water was nonexistent.....mind you there was an adequate waiter to customer ratio. Then the food took forever don't get me wrong I appreciate made to order freshness, but on a slow night and the customer has been vocal about the horrible service thus far you'd think they would've chopped to it (pun intended), and the food after all that wasn't great at all. The food was very good and a big portion. The drink we have was not so good. We both had a pomegranate martini. It tasted a little soapy. So needless to say we drank our water, lol. If your looking to critique the service, the demeanor of the staff and the whole dining experience then I am not so sure you want to come here. It is like a chinese food factory and they sling it out as fast as they can and the food is very good! Loved the hot and sour soup and the chicken with garlic sauce and mixed vegetables. Both dishes very flavorful. Amazing that the food stayed hot for a long time after service. Also tasted my friends general tsao chicken and it was really good- not too sweet and not heavily breaded . I also liked the ambiance, the place is neatly designed and the lighting is just right. In my head this place was ready to have a 4 star review. It was pretty, it was clean, and it was empty. 4 stars with the potential to gain or loose. So how did we end up at 2 you ask? I'm gonna tell you (duh). I sipped my Manhattan and looked around at other people to see what they were eating. It all looked and smelled great, the kind of sit-down Chinese food place that has brown fried rice (which is always better in my book). So we ordered from someone because we weren't really sure who our waiter was. I got the hot & sour soup. It was delicious, although I had to ask 3x for the crunchy noodles, the soup was good I could have eaten it alone. Then we ordered entrees, and the problems started. I ordered the shiitake mushrooms, whole and not cooked very well, with bok choy and bean curd. Everyone's food came and it was exactly what we expected except for mine. Which had tofu, which I don't fuck with. So I hail down another random waiter and explain that I thought the dish came with bean curd and this came with tofu. She says "bean curd is tofu". She goes back to the wait station, which we're basically sitting under, and laughs at the dumb American with her co-workers, whatever I can drop that. But tofu and bean curd really aren't the same thing. I watched a special on the process of fermenting bean curd on VICE and thought it was hella interesting. Also, I love Asian food so I know what bean curd is. Tofu is a processed form of bean curd, it is not bean curd. At first I was compliant, until my friend said "Today is your birthday and you should get what you want". Oh yeah! It was my birthday, they don't do anything special for birthdays ‍. So I found our ACTUAL waiter (that shit was like a game of where is Waldo alone, I cleared the table and he said "it's my job" I wanted to say but you're not doing it), and asked him if I could switch the dish for something else because it wasn't what I was expecting (because it wasn't what it says it is on the menu). He instantly replies no. So I ask if he can remove it from the bill, because I haven't touched it. He says no. I say ok but I don't want this and I'm not going to eat it. He says you don't want to waste food do you? And I say no but I'm not going to eat it and if I'm not going to eat it then why should I pay for it? My friend leans over me and asks for a manager. Once the staff figure out who will pretend to be manager this day that man comes over. We go through the whole thing again and finally come to an agreement. No tofu, more mushrooms, I still pay for my food. They tack on a "service charge", although there was no indication of it in the menu and we were a party of 4 (probably because the waiter we had wasn't going to get very much from us after the fiasco above). So why the second star? Because if you do manage to order something off the menu and it is what you're expecting it's actually pretty good and the portions are good to share. That's all. 1 for liquor, 2 for portion size, -2 for shit staff. Oh well, drinks and apps are fine by me! read more

I work down the block from Chef Yu and it's a great lunch spot. Whether you go with coworkers or order takeout, service is fast. The dining atmosphere is contemporary and airy, yet intimate. I've been here several times and usually go with the Chicken and Baby Shrimp Lo Mein or the Chicken with Broccoli. The only time I was less than satisfied with my meal was when I ordered Beef with Broccoli. The beef was very fatty and the flavors weren't up to snuff with the other dishes. Service is the same as Ginger's ....I find they just want to serve you quickly, you eat, pay and make room for the next customer....so, it can feel a bit rushed. This is a perfectly solid midtown Chinese restaurant. I have only eaten lunch here, and they do a very strong business (both take out and eat in) around that time on weekdays. I usually get the lunch special, which is still reasonable $7 and change, although they seem to have raised prices within the past year or so. My friend chose this place for dinner for her 21st birthday and I have to say, I've had better. Although the inside looked extravagant, I can't say the same for the food. It was decent to compared to some places in midtown but the portions and service was just ridiculous. The group consisted of nine people in total and I only ordered two appetizers. Amazingly, I didn't get my appetizer until after nearly everyone in the table had gone halfway through their main course. A friend of mine next to me had ordered Sesame Chicken and didn't get rice until we had asked for it. Growing up eating Asian food, you would know how much of a rice to get. Unfortunately, they served a mere scoop of rice and expected it to be called a "decent bowl of rice" (My friend who loves asian food was pretty upset about it and complained all night). The service sure enough was lacking. Every time a waiter/waitress came with our food, for some reason kept dropping the utensils onto the floor. No complains about the food but the super rude and uptight maitre d' greeting us at the entrance completely ruined the experience. The whole restaurant was empty and when I indicated that I'd like to sit next to the window, he said the table was for 4 people only and rudely gestured us to sit next to the cash register in the far back (which removes the element of social distancing).
