Restaurant was empty but the waiter wouldn't let me sit on a round table and only offered one of the corner square tables. The waiter was rude and was laughing with other waiters in Chinese while looking at us throughout our meal. We felt very humiliated. The food was mediocre at best and dumplings had very thick skin and were cold. And the worst thing of all, even though a service charge was not listed in the menu and we were less than a party of 5, they still charged us a 18% mandatory gratuity on the bill. This restaurant used to be good a few years ago but with the recent reviews they have been receiving, I doubt it will last longer than another year. If they want to survive in midtown Manhattan, they need to stop stealing people's money. read more

Downstairs is styled as a traditional Chinese family restaurant with big round tables in the middle, and it has a busy but orderly atmosphere. It looks more upscale than a typical Chinatown restaurant, (linen napkins and table clothes, attractive fixtures and mood lighting), yet food wise it is about the same, not so fancy but good and comforting. What is also great is that it is at similar price point as your typical Chinatown restaurant, which is unusual for Midtown, so very affordable. They also have Happy Hour, which lasts till 9pm, the wine is only $5 a glass, and although it too is nothing fancy, it is good enough for a table wine with dinner. dammit, I just started writing reviews here and so far everything has gotten a 3-star rating. I wish I could give Chef Yu something other than that, but that wouldn't work for me. I wanted to like this place, it's so close to my hotel-home away from home, and when I walked in I was surprised by the massive dinning room and generous table spacing (for a reasonably-priced eatery in this part of town). I was seated promptly and ordered hot and sour soup and Szechuan chicken, I had trouble communicating with the waiter that I wanted that extra spicy, but he finally got it and within a few minutes I had my soup. The soup was good, very good, but not quite spicy enough for my taste. It was however a solid 4-star soup :) The chicken came out a few minutes after I had started the soup and it was quite good as well. Very spicy with lots of meat. The white rice was perfectly sticky, though I was not offered chop sticks which makes the perfect rice a little less appealing in my mind. The food at Chef Yu's is a solid 4-star deal, the service however was awful. The place was not busy at all, maybe 10-15% capacity. I ordered the Spicy diced chicken lunch special $8.25+ tax and it came with a decent amount of food in addition to 2 spring rolls and a salad. Service was extremely quick. As for taste, perhaps I need to try another dish before I totally dismiss them. My food wasn't memorable enough for me to order it again. The fried rice was a bit softer than i'd like and kind of bland tasting. Definitely not typical of a New York City restaurant. We started off with a drink since happy hour was still happening. From4-8 all drinks were between $4.50 and $5.00 which was a deal we couldn't pass up. We then started off with fried dumplings. Perfectly crisp on the outside but all in all was a typical dumpling. For my entree I ordered chicken and eggplant. This is my go to dish at a chinese food restaurant so I feel it is my obligation to try it everywhere. They didn't skimp on the portion size or the eggplant and it came with a nice heaping of brown rice. Overall, a very pleasant experience. Definitely a reliable chinese food restaurant. I've eaten here before and I have to say their food is always good but the service during lunch time is always bad. Today was a disaster - I am a vegetarian and asked about the Tofu Seczuan. I originally wasn't too keen when I asked questions how it was prepared more than once and they would not answer me with nothing more than "it's really good you'll like it". So after the third time of telling me that I said I'd try it. Not my cup of tea - Tofu was runny and soft with a horrible texture and salty. I could not eat it. When I got my bill, I was charged for $1.50 for the Spring Roll - Really guys! Is this really going to break the bank and you had to charge me a $1.50???!! Secondly my lunch partner asked to have her food wrapped up and they asked her if she wanted it all together. She said yes and they rudely dumped a bag and container next to her plate - but the guy sitting to the right of us got his all wrapped up and bagged! Not sure who he knew. I was not very happy with my experience here. I had the vegetable spring roll which wasn't too bad, but my spicy basil chicken (which sounded SO appealing!) was slimy, with very little meat and a whole lot of white lettuce and cauliflower. My friend's sesame chicken was really good, though - it looked and tasted like real chicken as opposed to my weird slimy mall-food-court-like chicken. They have a cocktail list of probably over 100 drinks which it seems they could have copied out of a bartenders manual. In the large, I only got 6 pcs and a tiny broken pc that was barely 2" long. I told them about it this evening that I was short shipped. Then they said large only gets 6-7 pieces! Such liars! This is my spot right here. I get the shrimp dumplings with peanut sauce and its to die for. They give u like 12 dumplings for 7 dollars. The dumplings have garlic, ginger, and green onion in them. The sauce is peanut butter, soy sauce, ginger, garlic and some other stuff that tastes perfect in my mouth. The dumpling absorbs the sauce very pleasantly. Then I ordered the general tso chicken. The serving is big enough for 2 people. The sauce is sweet and delicious with a little kick to it. The chicken itself is crispy even with the sauce on it. I mean really good food at reasonable prices. If u get there before 4 pm u can get 5 dollar alcoholic drinks that are nice and strong. I been here twice and i plan on going back plenty more. This is my go to spot when I meet my lady for lunch during her break. The place is always busy yet there's always a seat. The food is amazing and affordable, especially the lunch specials. I usually get a lunch special( they are around 10 bucks entree rice salad use to have mini egg rolls) had one of their noodle bowls last time. If you get the noodle bowl get extra noodles. Service is quick and accurate. The servers aren't rude or friendly but I think that's more a language and or culture thing, I could be wrong. A little more pricey for dinner but take advantage of the happy hour drink specials good price good variety. Can't speak about delivery never had it but they do a lot of them during lunch so I'm guessing you can't go wrong. You can get good Chinese food just about anywhere in ny probably even cheaper, but for a nice sit down restaurant this is the place.
