You get one star for having a great waitress. But unfortunately, the food itself was pretty awful. They do have specials and some baked goods which we didn't try. Adorable breakfast diner place. We had delicious bacon egg and cheese sandwiches on brioche buns, and I had an egg white feta, tomato and spinach omelet. They were generous with the ingredients which were under the eggs whites in my dish and served with potato home fries which were a little greasy but otherwise very good. many times I have driven past and the parking lot is/was always full. So me and my family stopped for breakfast and the firs thing we noti was the lack of handicap parking and access to the restaurant. Several folks were there with walkers and to make things worse the middle railing was wobbly. The menu had lots of choices however what we paid for and what we got ( in my opinion) didn't match the staff when we saw them were nice enough. Good Luck to whoever goes there to eat. read more

I have wanted to try this highly recommended place for quite a while but normally it is so busy that parking is impossible. I finally had the opportunity to stop here for a late breakfast/early lunch. Keeping in mind that this is a cash only restaurant, I was delighted to see wonderful menu offerings, at very reasonable prices. There is typical diner fare as well as interesting chef's specials. Service was friendly and attentive. Depending on being able to find parking, as this is obviously a very loved local restaurant, I hope to be able to return to enjoy many more of the menu offerings in the future. read more

Started off great, but went downhill. Took our orders promptly. Food was slow to come out, (30 min) and lukewarm, forgot my side of bacon and still charged us for it. Home fries didn't have a hint of seasoning, neither did my husbands steak which came out under, then over when it was returned. Took forever to get our check because the waitress was on her phone in the booth next to us scrolling pictures with other guests she must have known. We are new to this area, and as such are learning the lay of the land. My husband read in the local paper (which is a must I believe when you are new to a town) that the Chef's Hat had been remodeled and was reopening. So, when we passed by it on our way down to Williamstown, we decided to give it a try. It does indeed look like a hole in the wall, as another reviewer described it; however, we have learned to not judge a book by its cover. In this case, I believe we were ignoring the proverbial red flags! Inside is very basic, dank , even seedy. Nothing cozy or appealing about this place at all. My husband said "wow, if they remodeled this place I would hate to see what it looked like before." The friendly hostess seated us (no, she really was friendly; most of the people are around here are really great, which to us is the #1 selling point). We were handed two menus, asked if we wanted waters, and were left to contemplate our order. My husband ordered a hamburger; I ordered grilled cheese (my go to when I'm sketched out by a place). Both sandwiches were ordered with fries. Our orders showed up and looked pretty anemic. True, it was a basic order but you really didn't feel like you should venture out in this place. The fries were pale and tasted like the oil hadn't been changed in awhile. The place is cash only. Yes, there's an ATM, but I'm always dismayed when I find this in a place since charges always end up being $6 on top of the bill. Anyway, not our cup of tea. Maybe breakfast is better? read more

Congratulations. You have managed to achieve the impossible and completely screw up the easiest meal of them all. Breakfast. Our "omelettes" were completely disgusting. The Denver omelette came out with uncooked peppers onions and 1 inch-square pieces of ham with egg folded over it. When we asked about it we were told that they microwave them and that next time we should ask for the veggies to be sautéed. Ummm if you don't know how to properly make an omelette you should just close up shop. To say nothing of the fact that your server told me that you nuke my food. This is a cute local breakfast/lunch place. You are greeted as soon as you walk in and can sit wherever you'd like. The staff is very friendly. It's a place where everyone seems to know each other and there are a lot of regulars. Very clean and menu is pretty big. Food was just okay. This is a good place for breakfast. It's pretty casual and has a very "country" feeling clientele. The tables are bit too crammed and the restaurant itself is a little run down. However, the service and the food were pretty good. I can't say anything outstanding about the restaurant but I can't really say anything bad about it either. I got the veggie omelette which was very large and could have been shared with another person (and I was starving). It was better than most diners - very tasty. The rest of the table (3 other people) were pleased with the french toast and their various omelettes and all agreed that the omelettes are rather large. If you are in the area and you would like a breakfast spot, go ahead and explore this place but don't expect anything more than a very casual place. No big bells and whistles and nothing fancy, just good food and decent service. Based on the delicious omelette, I would go by this spot again if I were in the area and didn't want to spend much but the place could use a little renovating just to make it feel cleaner. read more

I'd say overall it's 3 stars (food, atmosphere)... I would like to give it 4 because it's a small local business and the service is very good, but food is pretty average. Pancakes and waffles are quite good. I ordered the raspberry pancakes and the raspberries were actual real raspberries. Syrup is tasty and local. The coffee you make at home will taste better. Love this place when I am back in Williamstown or the North Berkshires. It is a kind of a rustic, old time, diner style, quaint and very homey restaurant. They have great selections for breakfast, brunch and lunch, from a vast variety of classic omelets, pancakes, French Toast, sausage & wonderful has browns for breakfast, to great New England Clam Chowder or French Onion soups, chicken wings, Mozzarella Cheese Sticks, Quesadillas, or a large selection of mouth watering sandwiches. Some of the lunch sandwiches include the Monte Cristo, the classic Rubin, Philly Cheese Steak (one of my favorites), tuna, chicken & the turkey club (another one of my favorites here). They also have many types of burgers, shrimp (another favorite) & many types of salads. There are quiet a few sides to choose from, fries, onion rings, cottage cheese, curly fries, sweet potato fries, chicken fingers & hot dogs. Don't forget to leave room for one of their great deserts, like, Brownie Bites, Strawberry Shortcake (I am not a fan of shortcake almost anywhere, but theirs is good), Hot Fudge or Strawberry Sundae, Banana Split, home made root beer, Peanut Butter Fudge Bars, or a great Root Beer Float!!! Be aware that on Tues. & Wed. they close EARLY at 2:00 PM, but on Thurs., Fri, & Sat. they are open till 8:00 PM, and till 3:00 PM on Sun. CALL to check hours before you go. Although I don't live on the East Coast any longer, and haven't for decades, there are only a couple of places like this that I always HAVE to go to several times whenever I am back there. By the list of items, you should be able to tell that I go there a lot when I am back there, and love both the great variety of food and the wonderful, charm of the place. It is a very short drive, just over 1 1/2 miles from the center of town in Williamstown, or a nice walk on a Spring, Summer or Fall day. (Winter, not so much). read more

We just happened upon The Chefs Hat on the way to Mt. Greylock. We walked in and the staff was very welcoming as was the restaurant itself. We had a delightful server she was very friendly and informative about the menu and specials. We got our meal very quickly even though the place was packed. Our breakfast was delicious! It was the very best breakfast we have had out in a very long time I recommend Chefs Hat highly! Wish we lived closer - we will have to take a road trip just to the Chefs Hat! read more

The place is cheap-looking, food cold, and the service was poor. I was given an attitude for looking around curiously while waiting to give my order. My food (hash, eggs, and toast) was cold. The hash was literally cold in the center, as if it had been heaped onto the grill from a freezer or cold fridge but didn't get cooked through. I wasn't offered even one coffee refill. When I commented politely to my server about the hash being cold, not even mentioning that none of my food had been warm, she lowered my check and gave me a just go away attitude. I wasn't asking for a discount, I was just making her aware of it. A little kindness goes a long way. I won't be back. read more

Every time I go through Pownal, VT into Williamstown, MA I seem to gravitate towards this little roadside treasure. My wife and I discovered this place a few years back when I had purchased a vehicle down the road at a local dealership and they needed some time to prep it before I could take it home. Since we had drove from Albany over we were both in the mood for some down home cooking and these little places are almost always very enjoyable. All the omelettes are amazing and so filling I'm not really sure how I managed to finish them but I almost always do! The home fries are definitely their own and all the food is just so filling and tasty. What this little place lacks in design and fine furnishings they seem to make up in charm, warmth, and friendliness. I am always made to feel welcome and they seem to remember us each and every time we go inside which is probably at least a couple dozen times over the past few years. We usually go to the Clark and see the exhibits there so a stop to the Chefs Hat is always part of the plan. BTW, if you don't already know about them, you must TRY A TURNIP MUFFIN!!! read more

I ordered take out today, and what i got was a Belgian waffle, homefries and sausage patty. I read an earlier review on here from someone mentioning a soft and soggy waffle, and so as i placed my order i asked the server to ask the cook to crisp the waffle a little bit longer than usual. When i got there i paid and tipped, actually well to be honest., kind of wish i hadn't. However my waffle was EXACTLY like the previous yelper stated, soft and soggy, luckily I was able to remedy this when i got home by cutting it in quarters and throwing it in the toaster, till it was nice a crispy and delicious. the home fries were soggy and messy and had way too much spice, the sausage pattys were those that you would BBQ and throw on some buns with cheese and sauce, and disgusting. I remember coming to this place when I was younger and the food be of good quality and consistency. Its as if the chef there just does not give a F. read more

I like Chef's Hat breakfast the most. They always seem to be busy for breakfast on the weekends and the staff is very friendly. The food is good since a new chef started and the price is reasonable. The location is a little off the beaten trail but not far. They have a parking lot but seems to get full very fast. I guess this is a good thing because that means they are busy. read more

Just went back after several years. We enjoyed it the first few times but it's a haul for us. First of all, let me just say what a wonderful staff. Everyone including someone who appeared to be the owner; who came out and directed us on where to park (the lot was overflowing) was super friendly. The interior was just as I remembered, crowded and outdated, but really what difference does it make, you're here for the food and service. The food came out hot and my coffee was never empty. The toast was buttered, thank you! Why do some breakfast places assume you want to butter your own toast?! I can do that at home. The waffles and French toast were tasty. My husband had a 3 cheese omelette and a montecristo and was happy with both. I ordered the Mexican omelette and I'll have to say I was a bit disappointed; I was envisioning fresh veggies or at least housemade salsa. It was tasty, don't get me wrong. And I know we're out of season but I guess the jarred salsa killed it for me. Don't get me wrong; I ate the whole thing. Overall a good dining experience. A friendly staff makes all the difference. This roadside diner is a great breakfast place. The raspberry pancakes include fresh raspberries and are fantastic. They also have dinner on the weekends.
