When the cold weather hits, Chello Grill is my favorite place to go because they have the best stews in town! I love their chicken and barley stew (soupeh jo). Today I tried their sirloin and bean stew for lunch which was equally delicious. Chello Grill has been slowing down a lot since they first opened, which is confusing because many of their offerings are fantastic any time of the year. I agree sometimes the service is slow; I usually call ahead or go when I have a bit of time to eat. Everything they offer is made fresh, if not, with lots of love. Stopped in for lunch, I ordered the 'seh' 3-meat plate. Ground beef, lamb cubes, chicken cubes, roasted vegies, basmatti rice and two sides, i ordered chicken-potatoe stew, and steak and beans stew. We ordered a $9.99 bowl with shwarma, rice and Shiraz salad and the gyro and fries special for $9.99. I was impressed by the hot fresh French fries. However, the cucumber yogurt sauce was missing and made for a dry gyro wrap. The meat, tomato wedges with cucumber, tomato and onions were present and nicely diced. When I looked online for online ordering, there was a picture of the gyro, veggie toppings and a small cup of yogurt sauce next to it. I am used to the wrap having that distinct sauce. Make sure the cucumber yogurt sauce is included if you get the gyro. My son enjoyed the bowl with chicken shwarma. read more

This place is absolutely wonderful, especially if you're a vegetarian or vegan. The food is always very fresh and flavorful. The staff are friendly and helpful. What a pleasant place to have REAL Mediterranean food. This reminds of the taste and textures from my many trips to the middle east. First off, the counter help is fantastic. Pleasant, kind, and helpful. If you aren't sure about something, ask for a taste. I had the single kabob meal which came with vegetables (zucchini, tomatoes and green pepper) which were perfectly grilled, way too much basmati rice and the beef shish kabob which was grilled to perfection and full of flavor. On the side I got some hummus which had a unique yet yummy flavor and their egg plant. They also give you naan (but not like the naan I am used to). This is large, round and flat and if you leave it on your plate too long, it gets dried out. My husband had a gyro with a side of fries which were crispy and in my opinion yummy. He was not jumping up and down but he said he would try here again with a different dish. As to me - well I will gladly go back (but I will take my cushion for the chair as they are hard based chairs). I felt the cost was a bit high since we had to go to the counter and order but we did get service once we sat at a table as far as bringing our dishes and clean up. Including dessert, it was about $20 per person. I didn't notice any alcohol of any type on the menu, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there - I just didn't notice it. This is hard, as the service is great and the staff is super nice. The restaurant is clean and the ambiance is lovely. But the food. Yikes. Chicken skewers are not grilled to order, as advertised. They'd been sitting for a long time. I asked them to make a fresh one, and they did. It was much improved. The ground beef one was leathery on one side. Chewing through that was unpleasant. Flavor was sour. Rice was crunchy. Shirazi salad was not fresh. Mushy tomatoes and flavorless parsley. Not enough lemon. Hummus was not what I'm used to. Wrong color, texture, and flavor. I like it creamy and light, not dense and heavy. Naan was charred on one side and raw on the other. Baclava was soggy and had a rancid flavor to it. What can I say, I had a gift card. read more

The food was excellent. It's a cafe style system where you order at counter and then receive a number. They have tasty soups and the schwarma is FANTASTIC. One gripe I had is when I was there one of the cooks was on break or something with his pants very low. I could see all of his business(whole bottom... gross!) and the worst part was he went outside and was leaning right in front of the window I was eating at! This would have been a great experience if I had a different employee take my order. This was my first time in and I was clearly confused by the wealth of options in the menu. The guy could not have seemed less interested or impatient that I was there. He offered no helpful suggestions and forgot to even ask if I wanted a drink. Normally I'm an avid tea drinker and I guess they have a tea bar here but if you're not going to engage with me in any way.He acted offended when i asked for a copy of my receipt and brusquely said it would come out with my food, as if I was supposed to know that already. About 10 min later while waiting for food I watched and heard a female employee give a completely different experience. She asked questions, explained foods, and gave samples. A different lady who brought me my food did an exceptional job asking if I wanted butter for rice, the seasoning, and if she could get me anything else. The ladies who work here slay in terms of customer service and I'm sure there are great guys but the one who was my first impression made a terrible one. As for the food: it's good! I have eaten at the Chello Grill and used them as caterers, I am extremely impressed with the owner and all staff who work for the Chello Grill. This is such a great alternative to healthy eating. The food (proteins and vegetables) are well seasoned, fresh, and NOT dry. The naan is made fresh and served at the perfect temperature. If you haven't had Persian food before no worries they allow samples before you order and carefully explain the cuisine and menu. The restaurant is very clean and spacious. Excellent Persian food! I heard about Chello Grill after visiting Flawless Med Spa. One of the staff members of Flawless offered me a coupon for Chello Grill. I was really excited to try it - I'm Lebanese and I love Middle Eastern food. You walk up to the counter, choose your meat and your side. Then pay at the register. All their staff members were really friendly. I ordered the chicken kabob and it came with rice, a side (I chose green chile yogurt), baked naan, saffron rice, and veggies. Everything was SO good, and definitely more than enough. I dipped the naan in the green chile yogurt and it was delicious. They also have a variety of teas available. I sampled one (can't remember the name) and it was really refreshing. I was surprised at how busy it was! I went during lunch on a Monday around noon, and by the time ordered there was a long line! I have lived in Tehran for three courtesy of Uncle Sam. My wife and a friend of ours was looking forward to some authentic Iranian food as we all lived there at one time. The cello was nothing but fluffy rice with a little butter and saffron. The kabob was just meat on a stick,was not marinated nor did we detect any spices on the meat. All I can say is wow! I was very impressed with this new business as soon as I walked in. The owners of Pizza 9 have really out done themselves with this new restaurant brand. I have been searching for exotic restaurants in Albuquerque and I believe I have found new favorite! The business itself is very neoteric. The layout is very modern and calm making for a comfortable atmosphere. The food is fantastic, not to mention the presentation of the beautiful dishes, and provides for a healthy alternative to other restaurants in Albuquerque. I was also very impressed with their staff. Every single one of their staff members was very welcoming and friendly and made sure that my visit was very enjoyable (I think I talked to every single one of them during my hour there), hard to come across a staff that truly makes an effort like that! I really like the concept/layout/menu and having another "Mediterranean" place (it's closer to Persian) near to where I live is a big plus. I've been three times and all were fine; I bought the three-skewer plates each time. First the good; the meat, while seasoned slightly differently each time, was always tasty (sometimes more than others). The savory yogurt sides are a tasty and a great way to moisten the meat and rice. The interior is nice and the counter staff were friendly despite what seems like high turnover and perhaps some under-experience in food service. The not-so-good; the rice has been inconsistent; sometimes good, sometimes dry and hard. They use bottled lime/lemon juice to garnish the shirazi (salad) and once on the salad greens. IMHO, it is a very conspicuous taste that really ruins the flavor of anything it contacts. The additional costs for shish kebab or lamb kebab seem too high (4$ extra per skewer?), but maybe the lamb is that awesome (I didn't try it). Finally, and the reason for the two stars: I strongly suspect there are either some poor food handling practices going on or some bad produce (basil) from a supplier. Wife and I after have been in GI distress after eating here three days ago. I made the mistake of eating some of the leftovers (extending my bout); our meal at Chello was our only one together in several days. My guess was either the basil or one of the yogurt sides; the other person in our party ate everything else but didn't get sick. read more

We got to go kabobs and hummus from Chello Grille and found it to be shockingly flavorless. The veggie kabobs were literally just veggies skewered - no oil, no sauce, no seasoning. And half of the veggies on our kabobs were huge pieces of whole green chile. I love green chile as much as the next Burqueño, but this was not a good use of a chile. The rice and hummus were also flavorless. The only thing that tasted good was the pita. The to go items from this restaurant were seriously overpackaged, too. The plastic they use is practically Tupperware thickness. We weren't impressed and won't be back. Try Sahara instead. read more

Chicken was super salty and the beef was bland. Biggest disappointment for me was the hummus. It was super dry and had no flavor. It was worth a try once but I dont think ill be coming back. I checked out this restaurant when I had a sudden craving for kabob. We had the 2 kabob combo with a chicken and a shish kabob, and some lovely sides. Don't remember the names of the sides, but one of them was a delicious eggplant dish and the other (if I recall correctly) was a lentil stew thing or something like that. It was accompanied by rice, a veggie kabob, and a pita. It was enough to share between 2 women, and everything was spectacular. The house hot sauces were delicious with a good amount of spiciness. We also tried a few of their specialty teas, but I wouldn't get those again because they were insanely sweet. read more

I was really blown away by this place. New restaurants don't always have it all together. There's a lot to figure out with logistics, new hires, and new recipes; but that is not the case for this place. The setup is fantastic and the entire operation seems to run so smoothly. The entire restaurant is spotless and has a very open and airy vibe when you walk in. There are incredible smells coming from the kitchen. You will be overwhelmed with the many options that you can order, but I loved that there were meals that included multiple sides and skewers, because I wanted to try one of everything! The staff was also very accommodating to not being able to eat bread, and even sliced some cucumbers for me to eat my hummus with. I love the way the food is plated and served. It's all so clean and the food tastes so fresh. You can tell there was a lot of thought behind the entire restaurant concept. There's also a lot of love and goodness that goes into cooking the food. This new place is from the owner of Pizza 9: I was not sure what to expect. It's counter service. The skewers of meat, salads/sides are in view. We were on the early side of lunch, giving us time to peruse the menu board. They have options of 1, 2 or 3 meat skewers, each with more sides. Every plate comes with grilled vegetables, saffron rice and a piece of naan. Partner opted for The Jujeh Kabab with tomato-cucumber salad. (It's ground beef and onion. I know it as Shish Kafka.) It was so good: Juicy, flavorful. I'm not sure that I've had better! The tomato salad was tasty too. I got Koobideh-AKA, Shish Tawook, (chicken skewer.) This is the single reason I'm giving this 4 stars instead of 5. The chicken was over cooked and dry. I chose a side of cucumber-yogurt. It was thick and creamy with a bit of mint. It was a generous portion that came before entrees arrived. Perfect for dipping the naan and on the chicken. The rice was good-tasted like batsmati. The grilled vegetables needed a touch of salt, but grilled to perfection. The place got busy. They may need more tables; maybe a few smaller tables. I found the servers to be friendly and available for questions. They have a tea bar. A very nice woman came around with a sample. We got cucumber water: Perfect drink with this lovely food. That this restaurant has such stellar reviews is a testament to how little variety Albuquerque has in the way of food, especially of the Middle Eastern variety. Just because something is expensive and in a trendy location is not an indication of the actual quality of the meal. It doesn't matter what you get as the overall quality and portions are the same. I could best describe it as rice, rice, more rice, that sure is a lotta rice, a huge piece of dry pita, and a little something extra. My little something extra was a chicken "kabob" which was also dry and had little flavor. My friend, who is a vegetarian, ONLY had the main course option of grilled vegetables--which we discovered are the same grilled vegetables that come as a side with any of the other meal. Having each ordered the Chello Yek (Kebob plus one side, coming with the aforementioned rice and pita), we each ordered the side that we assumed would go best with our entrees. He ordered a different rice dish (not knowing how much rice would be served) and I ordered the eggplant. Nothing was bad but it was all... boring. Other reviews described skewers of meat, but there were no skewers. Just a little chicken alongside all the rice. These entrees *should* come with hummus to make them less dry. If we had ordered it, doing so would cost us being able to try a different side. Prices were already high without doing the upgrade and the sides were painfully small. We didn't even see an option for baba ghanoush, which is something every Mediterranean restaurant should have. The cost of our little adventure? Two Chello Yeks and two teas came to $35 after tip. All of this, for a meal that was barely more than rice and pita. I don't plan on going back. read more

You can also order a la carte of course. While your meat of choice is cooking, you choose a side. I had the green chile yogurt, which paired well with the fresh nan. The meat comes with vegetables & rice. For the price you get a good amount of food. The lamb was tender & tasty, but the veggies were over whelmed with a strong seasoning.
