This is a review for the Chelsea Chowder House ONLY and not for the Queen Mary staff. I had a wonderful birthday meal and celebration with my family. It was an elegant dining experience. The views were spectacular. The decor of the room and the attentiveness of the wait staff was fantastic. The food itself was a little hit or miss. Some of what we ordered was absolutely exceptional and then the very next person got something that was mediocre or oddly flavored. Stick to the steak and meat items. That seemed like a better chef or different side of the kitchen. The seafood and the pasta dishes were not at the same level. My pasta primavera was strange and not enjoyable. The flavor combinations were strange, it was absent of any protein (for over $35) and the vegetable textures were off. My wife also commented how the shrimp cocktails were not the freshest and the cocktail sauce was overly spiced. I also ordered a half dozen oysters, which were good. Nothing to write home about, but got the job done. The bread service was actually very good. We ordered a second one for the table. Prices are not low. This is fine dining. The steak and the lamb chops dishes justify the price. The pasta primavera did not. The desserts was great. The mud pie was a mix of ice cream, Oreo cookie crust, and chocolate cake. It could easily feed four people. I was also given a special slice of chocolate ganache cake and a boysenberry free of charge for my birthday, which was nice. Prices are high enough without all the extra barriers in your way to get to the restaurant like the elusive tickets that you pay for up front, the parking, and the new amphitheatre in your way. QUEEN MARY STAFF NOTE: The entire staff at the QM needs customer service training. There are no instructions on The Chelsea website, on the OpenTable confirmation note, nothing that you need to go to the ticket bungalow about 50 yards from the entrance to buy tickets to get onboard, to spend your $300 on dinner. All the high level service at The Chelsea stops at the door. The security staff of the QM at the front entrance is cold and rude for no apparent reason. They treated us like we were trying to sneak onboard and rob the place, in our fancy dinner attire no less, showing them the reservation on my phone. F those people. Server was pleasant. Ordered appetizer spinach dip. It came out super hot, but not very fresh. It was sticky and stale. The bread basket was soft, buttery and very tasty. Ordered the halibut. Had an olive tapenade. It was bland, not worth the price. My husband's filet was undercooked twice. I finished my cold meal before they brought out a second one for him, still rare. Manager Ed was nice and got us ice cream. View was great with window seat. Here's the biggest issue we had to reserve on Open Table and pay $50 It wasn't credited??? It wasn't taken off bill??? Had a small pre-birthday dinner with some friends last night, and it was a true treat. The staff were warm and welcoming, the bartender while we were waiting for our table was super chatty and made great recommendations, and every moment of the early experience was great. Once we were seated, our waiter was truly kind and seemed genuinely happy, the food was good, portion sizes were a bit inequal, some got huge portions, particularly of the macaroni ragu which apparently was quite delicious, while others got considerably smaller portions, I can report that the diver scallops with trumpet mushrooms was truly delicious. They're Parker rolls were perfection, and my Mars Capone cheesecake at the end was also a treat. While the price point is marginally high, given the location aboard the Queen Mary and the ambiance, it's not a bad deal. read more

We attended a tea here, as a group of 4. We had a reservation, and it seems they stagger the reservations every 15 minutes for the tea. The day we went there was maybe a handful of tables seated for the tea. It was very quiet as the restaurant is not open for dining at this time it seems. The hostess was... honestly I am not sure how to describe it. We arrived, told her we had a reservation for 2pm and she stated we could sit and wait inside the lobby. When she sat us, she didnt say a word. I even tried to make a joke with her and ZERO reaction, no response, nothing. We thanked her for seating us and giving us our napkins for our laps, nothing. Not a word, not a smile... just VERY weird and uncomfortable. She did this all guests she sat. It was honestly uncomfortable. Our waiter comes over and he was the complete opposite, thankfully. He was very nice, and talkative and helpful. The tea was REALLY good - I got the only decaf option and I believe it had a blueberry flavor. It was very delicious. The food was ok. This review is for the Afternoon Tea experience and my heart goes out to the beautifully dressed couples that were sadly turned away on Valentines Day due to a surprise change in their booking mechanisms just a week prior. I booked a room at the Queen Mary for Valentines Day months earlier and followed the instructions of the rep who booked my room to reserve the Afternoon Tea experience via the Queen Mary's website that led to Open Table. Just 8 days prior I was luckily contacted to say they are no longer honoring Open Table and was sent a link to a 3rd party site to book and pay ahead. There was 2 spots left at this time. It seems upon arrival, not everyone got that same notice. Families were dressed up specially for the event, made the trip, paid the $40 parking only to be turned away by the host, standing next to an Open Table award, saying they nolonger accepted Open Table bookings, they were full. My heart really goes out to those families. Doubly so, as we were led to our table for the time slot, only to find the place was hardly full at all at the time slot but slowly over the hour more tables were filled. But nothing close to capacity. Also want to point out that although the location was nice, having stayed and explored the ship, it was clear there were countless other greater, more historic locations that this event could have been held in. The tea itself was very nice, both Luke and Alicia were able to walk us through the tea, making accommodations for a food allergy. But oddly enough the printed menu was not exactly what we were served. Stayed on the Queen Mary overnight so decided to try the Chelsea. The atmosphere was what one might expect for a modest dining room on a ship - not luxurious, but with a twinge of authenticity. The food options were a relatively small assortment of Salads, Land and Sea. Not complaining, just noting the menu was not extensive. Wife had the Roasted Half Chicken and said it was excellent. I chose the Fish and Chips because the menu said it was a house specialty. It was also excellent and there was so much I couldn't finish it. Not sure if I would travel to the Queen Mary to eat but if you're staying there it is definitely worth the visit. read more

The hostess was the most rude girl I've ever had the displeasure of meeting. We arrrived right at 5 after touring the Queen Mary. She ignored us for several minutes before finally asking if we had a reservation. We didn't but the restaurant was literally empty. She sat us in the back by the walk and when I asked to sit by the window she told me no that she was saving those for reservations. It's 5 on a Thursday. 1 hour in and 4 parties finally showed up here. They need someone who actually cares about their job and patrons to be the one greeting and seating customers. I had the pleasure of having a date on The Queen Mary with my partner visiting from PA and it was fantastic! Our servers were very kind and attentive, checking in frequently with us but not too much. I decided to try something new too and had the fresh caught swordfish and it was delicious, I'm usually very picky with vegetables but it paired well with all the side dishes. I'm glad we had gone at such a decent time as well to where we could see the ocean view from our spot while the sun was setting. This was definitely a unique restaurant, and that is the main reason we came. With that being said, the food was mediocre at best, but the view and service were decent. The filet mignon was not worth it. It was bland, but cooked well. The fish and chips were decent. The clam chowder and creme brulee were the stand out food items. I would get those two items again. On a whim, we wound up (for the 1st time) on the Queen Mary tonight. We eventually found ourselves at Chelsea Chowder House. I ordered the Fish & Chips, the batter was not too heavy and the fish was absolutely delicious, the chips were yummy also. Honestly the best fish and chips I've ever eaten. Husband ordered The Wedge salad and the Clam Chowder which he equally enjoyed. We did not have reservations but they took our name and said to come back in 20 minutes, which was fine by us, as we just continued on our self guided tour. This is the Queen Mary's one big sit-down restaurant that is currently open. Designed and decorated to take you back to when the ship was still sailing, they have great period music and you can enjoy a beautiful view of the harbor. Service is decent. With this in mind, we were very excited to have dinner here. But the food was the worst food we've had at the price point that they charge. The Fritto Misto was extremely bland, the breading was undercooked and falling off the fish, and there were many pieces that seemed like they just put fried breading into the basket - whether or not there was anything in the breading was debatable. The only redeeming quality of the dish was the citrus aioli. The fish and chips had the same problem - very bland. The breading was even worse than on the Fritto - you would pick up the fish, and the whole thing would crumble and fall apart. Definitely needed to be fried longer. The potatoes were decent - could've used a bit more cook time, but decent seasoning. The Shrimp Casarecce was decent - a little salty and the portion was smaller than what I would expect. We each got a simple drink, and after tax and tip, our meal came to $150. The regret for paying this much for this food was high. You are solely paying for the ambiance of eating on the Queen Mary when you come here. If that is worth $150 for two for you, then go for it. We were staying for a few nights onboard the Queen Mary. We checked in sometime in the evening and were starving. Midship Marketplace was already closed, so we ate at Chelsea. Service was charming and fantastic. The ambiance was pleasant with a beautiful view of Downtown Long Beach. We started off with the Fritto Misto, which was cooked to perfection. My boyfriend had the Double Angus Beef Burger and I had the Crispy Chicken sandwich; we were both so hungry, I think we each wanted something to really sink our teeth into. We had Sidewinder Fries for our sides, which brought me back to Peaks Restaurant in Palm Springs (where I first ate such fries). Our dinner was delicious and satisfying. Visited on Friday 2/14, made reservations a lil more than a month ago, it was supposed to be a group and then trickled down to just 2. I appreciated the host asking if we were ok with waiting for a couple more minutes for a table by the window. I don't believe it was packed most of everyone had a window view. We started off with the bread service, ahh ahhhhmaaaaazzing super yummy fluffy bread cluster and whipped butter, a must for sure! My entree was the pasta in a garlic cream sauce with veggies and shrimp, it was ok nothing to write home about... with a glass a Kung Fu Girl Riesling which made it all better, not many places carry this wine, made my night. I ordered a salad but server must have forgotten, so it never arrived and our food came out fairly quickly so I decided to not mention it. My partner got the 14oz steak cooked to his liking with some veggies. Be aware it was literally 3 small potato wedges, 2 asparagus and a carrot... wish the server could have suggested to get a side of mash cause that was just not great sides... He said steak was good. Uhhh I almost forgot they have a speakeasy called No3. We explored around the ship looking for it, I was excited because I was told it was a burlesque show but not much was happening... On our way out, we ran into a bar towards the front of the ship that did have some music. We will be back to check out that bar next time. This review will be glowing-- get your glasses lest you blinded for awhile by the dazzle and sparkle that is coming! I have a friend who is visiting from Colombia, William. He wanted to experience the 4th of July, he wanted to see the fireworks. Ugh. I'll go because he is a tourist and I do not want to deny fabled frolic to a newcomer but I know that the 4th is a red, white and blue mess: People all around, on top of each other- and not in a mash pit kind of way- everything is packed, everything is expensive and the service staff is tired, over-worked and can be sour in their tone. But he needed to experience the madness so he could know the unpleasant bustle of belonging to the streets on a major U.S. Holiday. I will say that William and I did experience this when we went to the Queen Mary- where Chelsea- is boat-housed. But during our dinner we heard a server tell a couple of dinners: "Chaotic is Patriotic." I informed the server that she should stitch that into a pillow. Her sentiment assuaged my frustration at the varied bumps of the day cause the server is right- if I want to celebrate the freedom of America, I need to understand that I am another loyal fan of the 50 states and I should be happy that I get to be part of the red, white and blue mess. But I am getting ahead of myself. Let me start at the beginning. And like so many other stories this tale begins with a line. Soon after getting to the Queen Mary, I asked a young person to direct me to a restaurant with a nice meal. He interpreted my request as asking for a fancy place. I corrected him and said, I am looking more for an elevated place. The guy directed me to the Chelsea Chowder House. William and I went and we were informed that the place does not open till 5. Great. We went to the top deck heard the US of A Anthem's and saw some planes of yesteryears fly. I was proud to be American. We went back to Chelsea around 5:10 p.m. And the wait was already a two hour long ordeal. William was kind enough to wait in line while I waited at the bar. I took him back some red Margarita's that tasted like a jolly rancher. Jose was the one who made these special drinks. They were majestic sweetness in their taste. I chatted with some people in the bar, I took drinks back to William, waiting in line has never been so fun. I found a way to make the moment joyous and I had support from a friend. But for all the other people just waiting--- the line wait must have been a hate of a wait. A sign could have helped. A sign up sheet might of help. But apparently the long wait was part of the 4th. The place does take reservations on this date. William and I had more drinks. We had steak. We had salmon. We the parker rolls. We could only have one serving of the rolls-- they ran out. This is small piece of evidence that the place was experiencing a unique struggle on this date. But the food, the food was spectacular. The salmon, the steaks, the sides offered (these super well roasted potatoes) everything was sublime. I defintely did not expect to have a grand steak dinner on this date and that is exactly what I had. And then the desserts--- my palette experienced fire works. We had the cheesecake, and we had the lava cake, it was all uniquely delicious. I really wondered who made these desserts. I wanted to shake the person's hand, and maybe even asked them to pucker--- yeah these were some of the best desserts I had eaten in my life. I told William that he would not be able to taste them after I had some. I said he could order more. He declined. But the desserts were beyond! I wanted to put a note as a picture. So let me start by saying a couple of things...I do not like giving low star reviews at all and when I do, I always will talk with the Manager of the place because I want them to know that I'm not only doing a review but why I'm rating the way I am. I had a good conversation with Fouzia, who is the Food and Beverage Manager, after our meal and she thanked me for the feedback. We were a large group (17 of us) with a reservation. We were seated in the back, left side of the restaurant, which was actually perfect because there were no other guests around to be bothered by the large group. Our server was Luke and he did a good job with everything (more in a moment about this). Because of the size of the group, Luke was asked initially about setting up separate checks based on the make-up of the group. He told us that the policy was he could take three credit cards and the remainder in cash. Several in the group seemed to be ok with this (wife and I were a bit concerned because we only wanted to pay for what we ordered, but...went with it!). Will jump ahead because at the end of the meal, the bill became a fiasco and one of the party protested about not having separate bills based on make-up of group and in the end, separate checks were issued although there were errors on some of them. Bread is charged separately and because the size of our group, wife and I decided to just order what we wanted and let the rest do their thing. They do not supply bread plates, so be prepared! Ordered bread for us and when several orders came out...ours did not. Was told that all of the orders were delivered. Again, reminded Luke that we were ordering separately from the rest of the group...took several moments but another order of rolls came out and unfortunately were placed at the other end of the table. Fortunately someone else realized and said something and our order was shifted to us. By the way, rolls cost $6 and they were warm and good! Our receipt was charged for two orders...we let it go! We also ordered the Scallop Risotto: The scallops were delicious! They were cooked to perfection with that perfect crust and tender inside. The risotto, meh! Not very well seasoned to be honest. There was chopped up asparagus mixed in the risotto but you couldn't taste that at all. I ordered the Halibut and after being asked how I wanted it prepared, I chose the sautéed method. It was the blackboard special so was to come with cherry tomatoes, zucchini, Kalamata olives (they were actually black olives), capers (I counted four) oregano sauce, microgreens. Could not eat this fish, it was so overcooked it was uneatable and I sent it back. Luke came back and said the kitchen agreed and offered to make a new one to which I declined. Here's the comical part of all of this! He offered to make it up by bringing me some of their tortilla soup...which was delivered in a paper cut (can't make it up) and four of tried it and it was terrible...thick, tasteless, yech. Luke again tried to make that up by bringing a bowl of their "famous" clam chowder...again three of us tried it and it was pasty, tasteless, had a few whole clams and was covered with croutons. I let Luke know both were horrible. I am not going to say more about the food...pictures say it all. The salad was wilted with some slimy pieces and didn't even present nicely because you could see the wilted lettuce. I'm stopping here...I'm giving two in place of one star only because Luke did his best, although he also had several missteps. He kinda forgets frequently! He did share a couple of stories about the haunted Queen Mary, which was interesting. Oh, and the water glasses were constantly filled and no one had to ask for more water! So, I decided to take a scenic drive up to Long Beach and visit the Queen Mary--because what says "special occasion" better than a historic ocean liner? Let me just say, my expectations were not only met, but exceeded--though I do have one tiny regret: not wearing stretchy pants. Finding Chelsea Chowder House & Bar turned out to be a bit of an adventure. The restaurant is tucked away so discreetly that it almost felt like we were on a treasure hunt. There's only a small, modest sign that says "restaurant," as if it's trying to keep the place a secret. But a quick inquiry with one of the friendly Queen Mary staff, and we were directed right to it. The moment we walked in, I knew we were in for a treat. We were seated quickly, and from our table, we had a view that could make a postcard jealous. We started the evening off with an espresso martini because why not kick things off with a little sophistication? This drink wasn't just good--it was exceptional. It was like the perfect blend of smooth, rich coffee flavor and just the right kick of vodka, topped with a creamy foam that made each sip feel luxurious. It set the tone for what would be an unforgettable meal. Our server, Angel (and yes, the name was perfectly fitting), was an absolute gem. He wasn't just serving food; he was crafting an experience. He offered spot-on suggestions for both the drinks and the food, and we took his advice on just about everything. For our main course, we went all out and ordered filet mignon--one done medium, and mine rare, because I like to live a little on the wild side. When the steaks arrived, I swear time slowed down. They were cooked to absolute perfection. My rare steak was seared on the outside, with a tender, melt-in-your-mouth center that was as flavorful as it was juicy. The medium filet was equally flawless, earning an immediate seal of approval from my dinner companion. But we didn't stop there. We added sides of buttery mashed potatoes, grilled asparagus, and grilled carrots. The mashed potatoes were so smooth and rich, I briefly considered asking if they offered it in bulk to go. The asparagus had just the right amount of char from the grill, adding a smoky depth that was irresistible, and the carrots were caramelized to sweet perfection, almost making me forget they were vegetables. Just when we thought we couldn't possibly eat another bite, Angel swooped in with the dessert menu. We caved and ordered the apple tart with vanilla ice cream, and let me tell you, it was the cherry on top of an already amazing meal. The tart was warm and flaky, with just the right amount of sweetness from the apples. The vanilla ice cream was the perfect complement, melting over the tart in a way that made each bite better than the last. I'm pretty sure I experienced a moment of pure bliss with that dessert. As we wrapped up the evening, I couldn't help but think how Chelsea Chowder House & Bar nailed it on every front. From the hidden-gem atmosphere to the impeccable service and out-of-this-world food, this place is a must-visit for any special occasion--or just whenever you want to treat yourself to something extraordinary. Wow, what an absolutely fabulous Mother's Day dinner! The view is unparalleled, the food was delicious and plentiful, and the service was spot-on. We had a Caesar salad, the rosé, the salmon entree, the fish n chips, the crème brûlée, and the cinnamon apple tart. Each thing was delicious on its own, and combined it all made for an exquisite meal. Our server, Stacey, was friendly and attentive, as were the bus staff. The salad was large enough to share and very zesty. The salmon was perfectly cooked with a delicious sauce. The fish n chips had 4 big pieces of perfectly breaded, flaky, delicious fish. And the 'chips' - one of a kind! Uniquely spiral cut, crunchy potato rings. Nice, dry rosé (Hampton Water). And the desserts! Oh my. Save room. One of the best creme brûlée's I've ever had. And it's on the QM! What could be better? Staring out over the beautiful ocean, marina, and downtown skyline. Ruben!! Ruben deserves 10 stars!! Local to Long Beach but never have visited the Queen Mary, my husband and I booked a tour and then had dinner here at the chowder house. We were sat in the back corner and thought this stinks but soon it wouldn't matter.. Ruben greeted us quickly and made us laugh right away. When I mentioned I was pregnant and had a headache he asked if there was anything he could get me (very kind). He brought out bread right away knowing I needed to eat asap. Dinner was good, my pasta came out real hot.. and then he surprised us with a celebratory dessert.. really he went above and beyond and it will be the reason we return again! Thank you Ruben!! My wife and I came here for our anniversary dinner since we were also going to Dark Harbor. The staff were super friendly and really helpful in suggesting menu items. The seafood tower is an amazing appetizer and worth the cost for the amount you get. Their clam chowder was just right with the perfect amount of flavor a must when you come here. I had the blackboard fish which happened to be swordfish. I had it blackened and it was perfect. Not dry or flaky and seasoned just right. The side of potatoes and broccolini were also grilled and roasted to perfection. My wife had the scallops with risotto. Risotto was smooth and creamy and the scallops were cooked just right and super tender and juicy. All of this while you look out a window at the beautiful Long Beach harbor which really makes the experience breathtaking. This is a must for anyone who likes seafood and the historic charm of the Queen Mary. read more

So we came here after some tours on the ship to have dinner. It's very expensive I know they have fish there but it smelled very fishy inside. We sat down at the table and both of our glasses with water in them had like food stuck on them and mine looked like somebody had poured a glass of milk dumped it out and then added water it was really gross. Since we knew we were gonna be onboard we made reservations. It was nice and clean and of cruise the view was awesome! The food was good. Our servers and hostess were all friendly and attentive. Checked in on us but not to much. Water glasses were kept full. Drinks were replaced timely. Oysters were excellent! Overall it was a great experience. A good first trip to Queen Mary for my son who's been wanting to go for years. If you've never tried this place I recommend it at least once. I'd like to eat there again when it's darker. I think the setting would be excellent. read more
